ONE STEP CLOSER

Putting back his sim card and battery that had been mercilessly thrown out of the phone some time back, he put the phone in the pocket of his kurta making his way down to where nikita's haldi ceremony was going on. He wasn't interested in the ceremony though, all he was interested in, was obviously somebody else. And his eyes caught her as soon as he reached there. The function was in the veranda just outside the hall and shilpa was standing there, holding a dupatta from one end right above where nikita was sitting. He did not really notice anything else. Not the other cousins of hers who were holding the other corners of the dupatta, not teh decorations around, not the loads of relatives around...

"arre armaan...aao tum bhi nikita ko haldi lagao.." shilpa turned back to look at him as soon as nikita's mother invited armaan to join in..

And he looked so dashing in a kurta! Such a charming masculine figure! She could eat him up right away! He smiled and walked over, quitely closing shilpa's mouth and smirking before he bent over to grace nikita's cheeks with the haldi...shilpa smiled looking at him. He was so soft...a soft masculine figure, let's say.

She kept smiling how armaan was slowly gracing nikita's cheeks with the haldi and laughed out loud when he smacked it all over her nose and face suddenly.. nikita whined, while he chuckled looking up at a laughing shilpa...she was such an angel, and her laugh was so much to die for...

he winked at her before getting up and moving towards her and sneeking behind her stealthily..

"oye.." he whispered in her ear and her breath got stuck in her throat, with him around, she didn't feel the need of air to breathe. He was it.

"i think white really suits you ms. Bracelet malhotra.." he spoke into her ear and she managed to whispered a little "thank you" fighting her blush..

"and black suits you too...like the saree last night..black and blue.." he nibbled on her ear whispering and she blushed yet again. "thank you armaan.."

"and black and white together too...like that dots waali dress you wore..with that side pony tail.." he nuzzled in. She just looked around embarrased to check if anyone was noticing them, but thankfully everyone was busy with nikita..

"uh..you already said that last night, but thanks.."

"oh i did? But did i tell you how good you look in yellow?" he did not stop playing as his little stubble now teased her cheek.

"i have never wore yellow in front of you armaan...jhoothi taareef mat karo!" she tilted her head to look at him and smirked..

"i. never. Lie." he spoke slow and clear. Looking into her eyes while one of his hands gently rub the yellow haldi on her cheek and winking.

Her lips slightly opened in an 'o' as she realized it ans smacked his arm. "armaan koi dekh lega!"

"acha? Chalo main saaf kar deta hoon..." he smugly brought his hand to wipe her cheek but she was smart enough to withdraw. "jee nahi..thank you very much!" and making him hold the corner of the dupatta that was holding, she ran to wash her face still blushing. The softness of his hand on her cheek was too much to be able to stop her smile.

"yo buddy.." rahul called armaan just as he was going to look for shilpa..

"hey.." he turned around and greeted the kebab me haddi.

"shilpa ke paas jaa rhe ho?" rahul held his arm and started walking in the opposite direction..

"uh..well..nhi woh main.."

"yeah yeah i know...can i give you an advice?"

Armaan looked into his serious confident eyes. He still felt this rahul always reminding him of his rahul back there in sanjeevani. And he looked nothing like that rahul at all. He was taller, maybe older too than armaan's muskaan wala rahul..

"uh..what advice?" he carefully asked. Rahul kept his hand on armaan's shoulder and still with the same intensity said "never tell anything to nikita. She is the loudspeaker of our family." like it was the biggest secret in the world. Armaan knew he was referring to his and shilpa's relationship and nikki must have told him about it. He too knew nikki too well. But then, there was nothing to hide. Everybody already seemed to know everything that was going on between the two of them.

"but there's no secret rahul.." armaan said in a hushed voice juts like rahul had used.

"you're saying this to the girl's brother? Seriously boy? You know how protective i am of my little sister? Shilpy ka dill dukhaya toh anjaam acha nhi hoga.."

armaan looked at him for a moment, frowned and then asked "ye dialog practice kiya hai?"

rahul sighed hard and replied "chaar baar! Abhi pe bhi try kiya tha..par vo bechara bohot seedha hai yaar! He promised me he will never hurt niks and all , then i convinced him to even write his property in her name and he agreed!" he hi fived armaan and the two laughed away like old friends..

"seriously! He's such a kid!" armaan was still laughing..

"but i ain't baby! And chahe mazaak tha..i'm serious about it..she's like a glass doll pata hai...soch jiska favorite snack is a snickers bar, how much a kid she would be at heart!" rahul gently spoke, and still nibhao-ed his duty as an elder brother..

"don't worry bro..i'm serious too...never been this serious in my life!" armaan reffered to his relationship..

rahul smiled..."i trust you, and then, nikki is a reliable source after all, ab tu uska dost hai toh mera bhi dost hua na! Acha mujhe bta na, how did you say it?"

"say what?" armaan's brows scrunched..

"that you love her idiot.."

"oh..woh..main...i..i haven't actually said it till now.."

rahul's eyes widened at that.. "toh phir? Yun hi chal rha hai sab? Dude woh jaa rhi hai parso wapis..you just said you're serious about her..you don't really seem to be!"

now that put him in a serious thought. Rahul was right, after all. Shilpa was to go back to NY a day after and he had'nt even confessed his feelings. Yeah, she knew his feelings, a way very well, but then, he would have to formally, openly at least tell her an 'i love you'.. and now it seemed as if time was running too fast. He realized too, that he wasn't going to see her after a day..

"oye kahan kho gaye? Kuch karna hai ya nahi?"

"kya karu?" he asked totally confused. He didn't have a single idea as to what should he do..

"well...you can probably wave her a bye at the airport and come home and say 'oh shit! I forgot to tell her i loved her! Never mind dude' ..yeah?" rahul said sarcastically as he sat on a chair in the veranda.. armaan, not finding anything else to sit on around, sat near his feet and asked like an obedient child..

"please seriously yaar...what do you say? I mean aise hi abhi jaake bol doon ya something like a date or something?"

rahul glared at him as if he'd said two twos are five or something.. "haan vo lunch kar rahi hai i think...jaakar bol de shilpy, no you call her shona na? So say 'shona, just came to tell you i love you, ok thank you bye bye' that'll be so romantoc for her na? She will remember it all her life!"

"will you please keep your stupid humorless sarcasm to yourself? I'm nervous here you know that? The last girl i told i love you is happliy married to someone else right now! You really think its that easy for me?" armaan shouted in frustration and got up from where he was sitting. He turned around and looked inside. Shilpa was feeding spriha and was looking around teh hall, probably searching for him..that worked to calm his nerves, and bring a faint smile too.

"so a date it is then?" rahul's voice broke his trance. He had expected rahul to say something serious after his little outburst just then, but then again, maybe teh whole family was crazy. This bro-sis duo especially!

"yeah..tonight..me, shilpa, and a date in teh finest restaurant of udiapur!" armaan grinned back at him proudly..

"me, shilpa and nikita's wrath!" rahul mocked him and continued.. "aaj shaam ko sangeet hai uncle uska!maar daalegi agr tum dono gaayab hue toh! Kal bhi party ke liye late na ho jao, isliye poora ghar sir pe uthaya hua tha niks ne..oh by teh way, tum dono dinner ke baad bhi gaayab ho gaye the..where were you?"

armaan flushed at that..he definitely couldn't say he was kissing rahul's sister up on the terrace! "uh...woh..leave that..you tell me ab kya karu? Kal le jaa sakta hoon? Par kal to shaadi hi hai..phir?"

and rahul-the most samajhdaar brother, replied "haan toh why do you need to take her out? Yahan bahar ya terrace par kuch kar sakta hai na..arrange a table upstairs bas!"

"on the terrace?" that seemed like a brilliant idea now. After all, the first move in their relationship was too on a terrace, on that of sanjeevani. And now proposing to her on the terrace woud be just perfect!
