Chapter 2
"Good morning Mr Vadhera,"Virat's secretary Priya called as soon as he walked through the front door of the office he just nodded in acknowledgement not really paying much attention and walking in to his cabin.
"Jeez,"Priya thought, "he's in a bad mood as always," shaking her head and got back to her work.
Virat sat in his office deep in thought thinking about how one moment he was the happiest man alive and the next he was just going on living just for the sake of living it.
"Good morning," Ajay his best friend and colleague said while peeping in to his office,
"Morning," Virat mumbled coming out of his trance,
"Are you alright," Ajay asked looking concerned at the tensed look on Virat's face, he was sad that his best friend who had always had a smile on his face was now always looking stiff and tense, the jovial, happy go lucky attitude was now replaced by a stern and serious look, Ajay had tried to make Virat share his feelings knowing that it would be easier to let go of the pain, but since the miscarriage Virat had closed himself off from the outside world.
"It's nothing," Virat said, "where were you yesterday,"
"Ria had an appointment with the Doctor," Ajay said not thinking of the gravity he was getting himself into and as soon as the words were out he wished he had made up another excuse, he and his wife Ria had just found out they were going to be parents and he hoped that Virat wouldn't probe any more questions from him because it will only open the wounds that Virat was trying so hard to heal.
"Is she alright," Virat said getting concerned,
"No it's just a check-up," Ajay said, "I have some work to attend to, I'll catch up with you later," trying to change the subject and leaving the room before Virat could ask any more questions.
Virat knew his friend well enough to know that he was hiding something but let him be as he didn't want to pry in his personal life.
********************
"Hey," Ajay said coming back into Virat's office, "Do you want to grab a bite to eat,"
"I'm not hungry, maybe later," Virat said not looking up from his computer,
"Oh come on, my treat." Ajay said.
"Fine, but I need to get back soon," Virat said agreeing half-heartedly,
"So what will you have," Ajay asked looking at the menu, while the two of them were seated at the restaurant.
"The usual," Virat said not really interested in what he was having.
"When did you become such a dull one," Ajay said going ahead and ordering for the both of them,
"Ajay," a woman came up to the table when the two of them were almost done with their lunch, "I'm so glad I ran into you, just talked with Ria, I'm so happy for you," she said, "so how does it feel,"
Ajay looked at Virat uneasily, who was looking confused as to what the woman was so happy about.
"It's still sinking in," Ajay said, dreading the explanation that he will have to give Virat.
"I won't keep you too long, enjoy your lunch and I'll see you around," she said walking away with a slight smile to Virat.
"What was she talking about," Virat asked,
"Nothing much, don't you think the quality of the food has changed since the last time we were here," Ajay said trying to change the subject.
"What are you hiding Ajay, I've been noticing it since morning," Virat said, "ever since you said that Ria had a Dr's" but he stopped short, "Is Ria pregnant,"
Ajay nodded sheepishly.
"Why didn't you say anything you idiot," Virat said, "I'm so happy for you,"
"I'm sorry Virat, I just didn't know how to say it," Ajay said looking at Virat as if he might breakdown.
"Oh come on man, we have shared everything in the past, I'm truly very happy for you," Virat said, trying to sound excited for his friend. He was genuinely happy for Ajay, he was a good man and deserved to be happy but there was also the sinking feeling that not long ago he had felt the same happiness even though it hadn't lasted.
"We should get back," Virat said, "I just remembered I have meeting with a client, I'll drop you back at the office if that's alright,"
"Yeah," Ajay said, trying to read Virat's expression but falling short.
"I'll see you later," Ajay said as he got down from the car, Virat just nodded and sped away.
****************************
It felt like hours Virat had been circling the city aimlessly. He finally came to a stop near Brighton beach (it's a beach in Melbourne) it had always been his favourite place to come when he had wanted to think, he remembered the countless times he had brought Manvi.
"Virat, you're home," she called as soon as he opened the front door to their penthouse apartment.
"Hi baby," he said taking her in his arms in a soft embrace, "how was your day,"
"It was alright," she said sounding different, he looked at her knowing she was having something on her mind,
"What's on your mind babe," he asked looking into her eyes,
"It's nothing, you go and have a wash, we'll talk later," she said trying to avoid his gaze,
"Not until you tell me what's going on," he said
"I was feeling a weak and faintish in the last few days, so I went to the Doctor," she started,
"Why didn't you tell me you were feeling sick," he said getting concerned and pulling her closer to him, "what did she say, are you alright, did she give you any medicine, do you have to do any tests,"
"Slow down, baba, she said it's nothing to worry about," she said,
"Nothing to worry about, you were feeling faintish, how can that be nothing to worry about," he asked,
"Calm down," she said smiling at him and stood up on her toes to reach his ear and whispered, "You're going to be a daddy,"
He just looked at her unable to let it sink in what she had just said, "I'm going to be a daddy," was all he managed to say when it finally sank in and he carried her by the waist twirling her around.
"Virat," she said laughing at Virat who looked like a child who had just been given his favourite toy to play.
"Sorry," he suddenly said putting her down, "I don't want to hurt the baby,"
"Don't worry baba, we're not that fragile that you're going to break us," she said ruffling his hair with her finger.
"You know babe," Virat said as he and Manvi were relaxing on the couch, he kept his head on Manvi's lap, "I thought I was the luckiest guy when you said you loved me, but today I know that I truly am the most luckiest guy on earth," turning his face to kiss her stomach, and then lifting himself up and looking at her eyes, he said, "thank you,"
"I love you Virat,"she said gazing at his eyes so full of love for her,
"I love you too," he said bringing his face close to hers and brushing his lips against hers for a sweet and tender kiss.
"Why God," He shouted to the skies, "What did I do to deserve this," he fell on his knees on the bare ocean sand, "why?" he cried, "Why did you give us such joy only to take it away."
Life had given him everything, he was the son of one of the most successful industrialists and it had come with all the perks of never having to wait for anything in life. His father had handed over the business to him when he had turned twenty five and gone back to India with his mother, as they had wanted to spend the last years of their life around family. Virat and Manvi had visited them once in a way but his home was in Melbourne, where he was born and raised.
He was brought back to the present when his phone started buzzing. He looked at the caller ID it was blocked. He knew it had to be either his mother or father calling.
"Hello," he said trying to sound normal.
"Virat," his mother said from the other end,
"Hi mom, how are you," he said,
"Are you alright, are you having a cold," she asked,
"Yeah mom, it's the start of spring, I'm having a bit of hay fever (some people get it in the spring when they allergic to pollen) these days," he lied,
"Oh, take care of yourself beta, and how is Manvi," she asked,
"She's alright," he said hating the fact that he was lying to his mother, he had always been close to his mother but he didn't want to worry her with his problems, and he especially didn't want her to know that he and Manvi were having problems.
"It will get better with time," she said, and he knew what she was talking about. "Are you planning anything for her birthday tomorrow?"
He suddenly realised the date, "nothing much, she doesn't want to celebrate anything," he said knowing that even though it was a lie, it would be something that she would say.
"When are you coming to Delhi for a holiday," she asked,
"Soon, I'm a bit busy at the office, once things settle, I promise I'll come," he said.
"Ok beta, you take care and give my love to Manvi, I'll call her tomorrow to wish her as well.
He sighed as his mother left the phone, had been so preoccupied that he had completely forgotten that it was Manvi's birthday tomorrow. He knew that she will be expecting something from him, but no matter how hard he tried to forgive her, he just couldn't. She had been his life, the person that brought a smile on his face, but now her presence only made him angrier and he would be lying to himself if he said that he didn't love her anymore, he did love and care about her, but it was not the same and right then at that very moment he didn't think that it will ever be the same again.
*************************
It was almost midnight and Virat still hadn't come home from work, before she would have been worried, but now it had become a routine, it was like he couldn't spend any time at home. She wondered if he remembered it was her birthday tomorrow. In the five years that they had been together he had never missed the chance to surprise her with his romantic gestures.
She sat down at the dresser combing her hair, when her eyes fell on the white Gold chain and heart shaped pendant she was wearing on her neck. She held it in her fingers and felt a smile creeping up her face.
"Hello," she answered the phone,
"Were you sleeping," he asked,
"Well usually normal people are asleep at this time," she said looking at the time on her phone, "Virat, it's almost midnight,"
"Exactly," he said sounding excited,
"What the hell," she said, getting alarmed at the sound at her window, "I think someone's throwing stones at my window,"
"What, you should take a look," he said not sounding the least bit concerned about her going out near the window, she went opened the curtain and looked out,
"Virat," she screamed,
"Ssshhh, you'll wake your parents," he said from the other end,
"What are you doing here," she said trying to hide her excitement.
"Can you open the door, it's kinda freezing outside," he said,
"But mom and dad," she said, not wanting to wake up her parents, "and what if Shadow starts barking,"
"Shadow loves me, and I'll be quick don't worry," he said,
"Virat, I can't believe you came here at this time," she said while opening the door, shadow was wagging his tail looking at Virat,
"See I told you Shadow's on my side, he didn't even make a sound," he said and looked at her lovingly, "I wanted to be the first one to wish my sweetheart,"
She smiled, looking at his hands that he was keeping behind his back, "what do you have there," she asked,
"Turn around and close your eyes," she said,
As soon as she did she felt his hands around her neck she opened them to see him tying a chain round her neck.
"Oh Virat," she gasped looking down at it, "It's beautiful,"
"This is also for you," he said, placing a huge card in her hands, "don't read it till I'm gone,"
"Virat, I love you so much," she said looking up at him,
"I love you more babe," he said, "now I have to go, before I wake your parents,"
He pulled her close, tracing her face and entwining his fingers in her hair, "Happy Birthday sweetheart," he said and brought his lips close to hers, she could feel her heart racing at his closeness, "I love when your heart starts racing," he said placing his hand on her chest, he bent his head and kissed her neck softly, and then moving his mouth to her lips and finding it in a passionate kiss.
She heard the front door bang, "he's home," she thought,
She turned around just as he walked into the room, he face looked tired, and she thought she must have been mistaken but his eyes looked as though he had been crying.
"Busy day," she asked trying to start a light conversation.
"Yeah," he replied, not looking at her and getting the towel from the rack and walking into the wash room for a shower.
He was back within minutes wearing his usual track pants and t-shirt he wears at night.
"Shall I bring you something to eat," she asked,
"I already ate," he said lying on his side of the bed and turning his back to her.
"Oh, I'll just clear the table then," she said and went to the kitchen, she hadn't eaten anything either thinking that they might have dinner together, when she got back to the room he had already fallen asleep. She sighed and got into bed, glancing at the time while switching off the bedside table lamp. It was past midnight, and he had shown no sign of knowing it was her birthday today. She could feel her eyes tearing up; she didn't know how she could get through to him. She lied down on bed covering her mouth with the pillow, so that he wouldn't hear her. He had never been able to stay angry with her before, no matter how many fights they had, they had promised that they will never get to bed angry.
He had closed his eyes when he had heard her enter the room, he could hear silent muffled sobs even though he knew she was trying to hide the sound with the pillow. Part of him wanted to hold her and tell her everything will be alright, but the other part of him felt like she deserved to be going through at least an ounce of what he had gone through. He closed his eyes trying to drown out the sounds, but he couldn't and after a few hours the sobs died down and he knew she was asleep. He tried his best to sleep but he couldn't, this would be the first birthday that he hadn't wished her, he turned around quietly to face her. She was facing his side, her face looking so peaceful and calm; he was itching to reach out and touch her face but decided against it.
"Happy Birthday babe," he said softly looking at her beautiful face, he tried his best to fall asleep but in vain he decided to go into the living room and watch some television because his tossing and turning might wake her up.
*********************************
Manvi awoke to find herself alone in the room, "had he already left," she thought, the bathroom door was open so she thought he might be somewhere in the house, she went outside, he was nowhere to be seen, she looked outside the window, his car was gone.
"I didn't even hear him," she thought, disappointed that he hadn't wished her for her birthday; she went back to her room to have a wash and get ready for another day.
She hurried out of the bathroom when her phone started ringing,
"Happy Birthday Beta," The caller on the other end said as soon she answered.
"Thank you so much, Vanshika ma," she said, it was Virat's mother,
"Virat has already left for work, or you could have talked to him as well," Manvi said.
"That's alright, I talked with him yesterday," she said, "In fact I asked him whether he had any plans to celebrate your birthday,"
Her words surprised Manvi and made her even more disappointed to know that he had remembered but not even bothered to utter a word.
"We're not really up for celebrating this year ma," Manvi said, trying to keep the tears that were threatening to come out.
"Don't worry beta, everything will be alright soon, at least the two of you have each other," Vanshika ma said making Manvi's heart break into pieces,
"If you only knew," she thought,
"You take care, Manvi, here papa is here too," Vanshika ma said giving the phone to Virat's dad Jiten,
"Happy Birthday," he said,
"Thank you papa," Manvi said, feeling happy to hear the of sound of his voice, she had become closer to them after her parents had passed away in an accident two years ago, and had been sad when they had decided to move back to India.
"When are you coming to visit us," he asked,
"Soon, Virat is so busy with work," Manvi said knowing very well that that would have been his answer if he had been asked the same question.
"I'll talk to Virat to make you'll come here, I'm sure Ajay can handle things while he's away," he said,
"We'll come soon, I would love to see the both of you, it's been too long," she said,
"Ok Beta, take care of yourself and Virat too, will speak to you soon," he said,
"You take care too papa, God Bless you," she said as he cut the line from the other end.
"So Virat knew," she thought, "and he didn't bother to say anything,"
********************
"Are you still here," Ajay asked as he poked his head through Virat's cabin door, "shouldn't you be getting home,
"Had some things I needed to finish," Virat said absentmindedly,
"But it's Manvi's birthday right," Ajay said making Virat looking up from his work,
"Yeah, I was just leaving in a bit," Virat said,
"You know, you used to get me in trouble with Ria with all your romantic moves on Manvi," Ajay said smiling,
Virat just looked away and said, "I'm not planning anything this time,"
"Is everything alright between the two of you," Ajay asked sounding surprised at his answer as it was not like Virat to do not plan anything for Manvi's birthday,
"Everything is fine," he lied, he's being doing a lot of that lately, "under the circumstances,"
"Oh," Ajay said, "Well at least go home early today, she's going through exactly what you are going through,"
He just nodded his head, he thought about Ajay's words, even though he hated her for everything that had happened, he knew that apart from his parents, he was the only family she had in this world.
"Manvi,"he asked as she was holding the phone as though she had seen a ghost,
She dropped the phone and fell to her knees,
"Manvi," he screamed jumping up to hold her, "what happened,"
"Virat," she sobbed burying her face in his chest, "their gone,"
"Who's gone," he asked, "Who was it on the phone?"
"Mom and Dad met with an accident," she said her voice breaking, "They left me Virat, I'm all alone,"
"No baby, don't ever say that, you'll never be alone till you have me," he said holding her face in his hands, "I'll always be here for you,"
He made up his mind to go back home to her, because no matter how hurt and angry he was with her, there was still apart of him that still loved her, and that part made him want to go to her and let her know she wasn't alone.
********************************
Manvi decided to distract herself by arranging the baby room, that she and Virat had decorated, it had taken her a long time to muster up the courage to walk inside the room, she wanted to move on, she knew that the first step of moving on was to give away the toys and clothes they had bought for their child. She got a cardboard box out and started neatly folding away the small dainty clothes, tears welling up in eyes with every piece she put away. She lifted up a small dainty jump suit and her thoughts drifted.
"Green, Virat, what baby wears green," she said looking at the jumpsuit he had bought,
"Well we don't know if it's a girl or boy as yet, so I bought green," he said, "when we know the sex next week, you'll have everything in either blue or pink,"
"But Virat, couldn't you wait till next week, when we know," she said,
"I went to the mall, and I saw this, it looked so cute that I had to buy it, with a dad as handsome as me, he or she will look good in any colour babe," he said,
"What are you doing?" he asked, she looked up from the floor where she was sitting putting the clothes away to see him standing by the doorway.
"I, I," she started not knowing how to say that she was giving away the toys and clothes.
"Are you giving away everything," he asked the sound of his voice rising,
"I just thought, we won't need them," she said,
"And did you just make the decision on the own," he asked,
"You don't say anything to me anymore," she said
"Shouldn't surprise me," he said sarcastically, "Won't be the first time, you made a decision without asking me,"
"What is that supposed to mean," she asked getting up to her feet.
"Nothing," he said, "I want this room to stay the same,"
"But Virat, we need to move on," she said,
"Leave it," he said getting angry, "I know you want to feel less guilty but I want it to stay the same,"
"Less guilty," she asked sounding confused, "Why should I feel guilty,"
He turned around to leave the room, but she pulled his arm and made him turn around to face her,
"What is wrong with you Virat," She said her voice rising,
"I don't want to get into a fight right now," he said, trying to pull her hand away from his arm,
"No, you have to answer me, what changed Virat, you didn't blame me at first, why now, what did I do," she asked,
"Just leave it," He said pulling her hand away,
"No, I've had enough you trying to push me away," she said and grabbed his arm again,
"Just leave me alone," he said shrugging his hand away forcefully making her lose her balance, but she managed to steady herself by reaching out to hold the wall.
She looked at him angrily, "What the hell is wrong with, why are you treating me like this, you're not the only one who lost a baby, I did too," she said her voice shaking with all the anger and hurt that was inside her.
"Yeah, but the difference was you never wanted a baby in the first place," he said, piercing her heart with his words and she looked at him confused and hurt with his words, he turned around taking one last look at the tears that were streaming down her face, and a few seconds later she heard the front door slam and she knew he was gone again.
