Chapter 3
Manvi sat on the couch in the living waiting for Virat to come back home but he didn't it was past midnight and he still hadn't come home after their confrontation about the baby clothes.
She recalled his heart stabbing words, "You never wanted a baby in the first place,"
Her thoughts drifted off to the moment that had changed her life,
"Manvi, are you alright," Sonia Manvi's colleague at work asked as Manvi sat on the nearest chair, feeling faint.
"I don't know I felt a bit weak all of a sudden," she said drinking the glass of water that Sonia gave her, "Come to think of it, I've been feeling like this the past few days,"
"Really, What else have you been feeling, nausea, loss of appetite," Sonia asked raising an eyebrow,
"Yeah, how do you know," she asked,
"If I'm right, and I know I am, I think you're pregnant," Sonia said excitedly.
"No it can't be," Manvi said looking confused,
"Hate to break it to you sweetie but precautions are not one hundred per cent full proof, make an appointment to be sure," Sonia said.
She hadn't being able to believe the positive reading on the home pregnancy test she had taken after listening to Sonia, she and Virat had never talked about having kids at the time as they both were concentrating on their careers, Virat had been handling Vadhera Industries on his own and she was close to becoming a senior associate at the architect firm. The news had come as a shock but the hesitation hadn't lasted long.
"Come in, Mrs Vadhera, is your husband with you," The Doctor asked as she opened the door for Manvi.
"No, he had to work," she lied; she still hadn't gotten the courage to tell Virat that she had taken a home pregnancy test and that it had been positive.
"Why don't you lie on the bed, we'll do a quick ultra sound," the Doctor said trying to make Manvi feel comfortable.
"The gel might feel a bit cold," the doctor was saying as she rubbed a cold gel on Manvi's belly and then took a device and started taking it up and down her stomach.
"Here we are," the doctor said resting the device at one point and pointing at the screen. "That's your baby Manvi,"
It took Manvi a few minutes to realise that the small dark speck on the screen was the tiny human being growing inside of her. Her eyes welled up with tears at the sight of it and she knew that she was ready. She was ready to bring her baby, their baby, the symbol of the love they shared their love into the world.
"Is Virat angry because he thought I didn't want the baby at first," she thought. "I was scared but it all went away after seeing our baby on the monitor. Did it all come back to the first impression I had of being pregnant, what about all the moments of happiness that I shared with him about becoming a mother."
"Why won't you talk to me Virat, how can I know what's going on in your head if you refuse to talk to me." She thought.
Manvi sighed looking at the clock on the wall; it was 2'o clock in the morning. She picked the phone and dialled Virat's mobile, no answer. She wasn't surprised that there was no answer. She sent him a text since he wasn't answering.
At least let me know you're alright- Manvi
She waited almost 10 minutes before he replied.
Fine- Virat
"At least he has the courtesy to let me know he's alright," she thought to herself.
The events of the last few days had tired her down and she fell into a deep sleep as soon as she let her head rest on the couch.
************
After the confrontation in the baby's room which had been almost a week ago, Virat and Manvi's relationship had dipped to an all-time low, he had taken to sleeping on the couch the nights he decided to come home and other nights he opted not to come home at all and staying at the office. Manvi tried to explain and try to clear the misunderstanding but it was useless as he was not willing to hear a word she wanted to say. She wanted to make him understand that she had been scared, she had been feeling apprehensive after finding out about her pregnancy but it had all gone away the minute she saw the ultra sound, but he was not willing to listen, he had become deaf to her words and a stubborn rock to her feelings.
"Good Morning," Ajay said as he walked into Virat's office. "Wow you look terrible, are you alright,"
"Yeah I've just been working late the past few days," Virat answered.
"Is there any problem with you and Manvi," Ajay asked.
"Nothing like that," he said, he didn't want to share his problems with even his best friend, no matter how upset he was with Manvi he knew better than to hang their dirty laundry out to dry for everyone to see. He knew that she wouldn't have confided in anyone either because if she had Ajay will be the first to know because his wife Ria and Manvi were good friends.
"Hey are you going for Mr Malhotra's fund raising event," Ajay asked.
"Can you go instead of me," Virat asked not wanting to socialise with his business clients.
"I could have but Ria's not feeling well and thought that you and Manvi could go," Ajay said.
"Are you sure you can't make it," Virat asked.
"Sorry man, I would if I could but I don't want to leave Ria at home alone." Ajay said, "Hope you understand,"
"Yeah it's alright, I'll take Manvi with me," he said wondering how he was going to ask Manvi to come with him when he hardly spoke two proper words to her in the last few days.
"Let me know how it goes," Ajay said and left the office.
*****
"Manvi!" Virat called as he came into the house.
Manvi was surprised to see him home this early and that too calling her name.
"Is everything alright," Manvi said coming into the living room.
"I have a business cocktail and I need you to come with me," he said.
Manvi just looked at him unable to believe that he had asked her to come with him. She has always accompanied him in the past but now it was different.
"Manvi," he said as she gave no answer.
"Yeah, I'll come what time are you leaving." She asked.
"Around 8," he replied and went upstairs.
"This is my chance," she thought to herself, "he's in a good mood I can make him listen to my side today."
Manvi was brushing her hair when he walked into the room; he was wearing black pants with a dark blue long sleeved dress shirt. She smiled it was a shirt that she had bought for him. He was looking away from her fixing his hair as always.
"Do I look nice," she asked, he looked at her she was wearing a navy dark blue spaghetti strap dress that came up just above the knee and had a black lace shawl wrapped around her shoulder, her hair was left loose around her shoulders and a few strands were falling slightly on her face.
"You look beautiful," he thought to himself, but only managed a "You're fine," out loud.
"You are looking really handsome Virat," she said with a huge smile.
He looked back at her surprised at her happiness when he realised she had bought him the shirt. He felt a bit ashamed now that he had only told that she looked fine, when she had given him such a big compliment.
"We're getting late, come down soon," he said and left the room.
She smiled to herself, "there's still hope," she thought to herself. Consciously or subconsciously he had chosen a shirt she had gotten him, whenever he had wanted to make her happy in the past he had always worn something she had gotten for him, because it had always brought a smile to her face.
"Thank you Virat," she said, "There still is a bit of the old Virat in all that anger," walking downstairs feeling a sense of happiness that she hadn't felt in weeks.
It was a silent drive to the party; Manvi was looking out the window. Virat looked at her with the corner of his eye, not allowing her to know he was looking. He knew she was probably over the moon because he had worn the shirt she had got for him, but he had just grabbed whatever came to his hand and as fate would have it, it had been that shirt.
He did want to work things out, but every time he tried to put away the anger the taunting voice came back to him and took away all the feelings he had of getting back to the way things were. It was true that he had been making her believe that he was only with her because it would devastate his parents to know they had parted ways but if he was truly honest with himself he knew that deep down that wasn't the reason. He wouldn't know how to live life without her. She was his life, his everything, even though they didn't talk like before, or laugh like before, her presence was enough to keep him going. All the times he had taken out his anger on her, he had never wanted to but he was hurt, hurt that she had never told him that she had been scared at the beginning. They had always shared everything and it had hurt him to think that she had never confided in her fears of becoming pregnant. She had only showed him how excited she was that they were going to have a baby and with time he didn't know whether to believe if it was just an act or for real.
"Are Ajay and Ria coming," she asked making him come out of his thoughts.
"No, Ria was not feeling well, so Ajay didn't want to leave her alone, that's why I'm going," he said.
She couldn't help thanking the stars for Ajay backing out of going at least that gave her a chance to spend time with Virat.
Virat parked the car and got out, Manvi wrapped her shawl and took her clutch in one hand and tried to open the door with the other when Virat opened the door for her.
"Thank you," she said surprised at his gesture, he didn't say anything but moved away so that she could get out of the car.
They walked side by side into the hall which was already full with people busy talking around with those around them.
"This was going to be a long night," she thought to herself looking around and then at Virat unless he talked with her she was going to be standing like a statue because she didn't know anyone at the party.
"Viraat," she heard someone call out, both she and Virat turned around to see Deepthi coming up to them.
"Great," Manvi thought, she and Deepthi used to work in the same architecture firm, but they had never got along towards the latter part of her tenure at the firm, Deepthi was more senior to her and had known Virat before Manvi, they had been close friends and Manvi had somehow sensed that she had always resented Manvi for taking Virat away from her. Call it a woman's intuition but women can sense these things even though Virat had always ignored Manvi's accusations that Deepthi had been interested in Virat.
"She's just a friend Manvi," he had always said, "If she only considered you a friend why does she treat me differently after she found out we were going out," she had replied, but Virat just ignored her because he had never seen Deepthi as anything more than a friend.
"Virat, how nice to see you," Deepthi said in her sugary voice making Manvi roll her eyes. Virat put his arm around her waist and gave a quick peck on the cheek. He pulled away looking at Manvi, at the same time Deepthi looked towards her too.
"Oh Manvi, nice to see you too," Deepthi said giving an extremely fake smile. "Haven't seen you much after you left the office, Virat on the other hand I meet quite often,"
This was news to Manvi but she tried not to show her surprise as she didn't want to show Deepthi that Virat didn't tell he was meeting Deepthi.
"I wouldn't say often Deepthi, the last time I saw you was almost two months ago," he said, wiping off the smug look on Deepthi's face and making Manvi just want to give him a big kiss.
"Excuse me, I'll just be back," he said as he turned to walk to talk to one of his clients.
"So how you been Manvi," Deepthi asked, trying to start small talk with her.
"Good," she answered.
"Virat told me about what happened," Deepthi said, "he was devastated,"
"We both were," she said getting annoyed at how concerned Deepthi was for Virat.
"Yeah but it was different for you," Deepthi said.
"I'm sorry, how was it different for me," she asked.
"Come on Manvi we all know how sad you were that you had to leave because of the baby," Deepthi said.
"Excuse me, what the hell are you talking about." She asked.
"Sonia was telling me how surprised you were at becoming pregnant and how it would dampen your career," Deepthi said, "And Virat was so excited about having a baby I guess you just had to go along with it,"
By now Manvi was fuming inside, is that what Virat thought, that she had only accepted the baby because he had wanted it, has this so called friend being feeing him lies all this while poisoning him against him.
"I'm surprised that Virat forgave you," Deepthi was going on but thankfully had to stop when someone pulled her away to attend to another guest.
"I don't believe it, he never listened to what I had to say but all this while he had been listening to her and thinking the worst of me." She thought. "Did my feelings look unreal to him, did he really think that all of the joy I had over becoming a mother was all an act."
"Can I get you something to drink," Virat asked, she had not even noticed him walking towards her.
"No I'm fine," she said trying to read his mind. "What is really going on in there Virat," she thought, "because if you listened to that bitch instead of me that was going to be the last straw,"
"Virat," she started but was cut short when Deepthi came again and started pulling Virat to come and dance with her. "The nerve this woman has," she thought to herself. Virat however just looked at Manvi and let himself be dragged onto the dance floor by Deepthi. Manvi just stood there watching Deepthi put her arms around him, it was not the first time he had danced with someone else, it wasn't like he was holding Deepthi the way he holds her but she felt herself breaking down, she couldn't take it any more. All her hopes of getting him to talk to her were getting washed away and she could feel her eyes swelling and she knew she had to get out of the hall.
Manvi walked out into the balcony and breathed in the fresh air. She wrapped her shawl around her tightly as the night winds gushed around her sending her shivers down her spine.
"Are you alright," Virat asked suddenly coming up from behind her, "You know it doesn't mean anything just because I dance with someone else,"
"I'm not upset because you danced with her, I'm upset because you listened to her, believed what she said rather listening to me, I thought I knew you better than that Virat, I thought that you believed in my love, that you believed in us. I always thought that no one can tell you anything against me because you knew the truth," she went on, "I remember before if someone said anything wrong about me you would always defend me and say that Manvi's not like that I know her. What happened to you Virat, did you really think that I never wanted the baby,"
"Manvi, please not here," Virat said not wanting to create a scene at the party.
"Then where," she asked, "You don't talk to me any more,"
"Manvi please don't let everyone see this," he said, "let's go home," taking her hand to pull her away from the balcony and leave the party.
"What else is there to see, you've told her everything there's nothing new to show," she said.
"Manvi will you please shut up before someone sees," he said taking her by the arm and making his way towards the door.
"Virat," a man came up and said, "are you leaving already,"
"Sorry, Mr Saxena, I will catch up with you soon." He said and guided Manvi out of the hall before she could say anything else.
"What the hell is wrong with you," he asked as they got into the car and started driving. "I have to work with some of those people, what if they heard you; I don't want the world to know our problems."
Manvi started laughing sarcastically, and said, "That didn't stop you from getting sucked in by that woman,"
"She's my friend," he said, "she just wanted to know how I was doing after the miscarriage,"
"Friend," she asked lifting her eyebrows, "Is that why you believed every single thing she said and thought that I who was supposed to be the love of your life was the bad guy in all this,"
"Manvi I don't want to talk about this now," he said.
"No Virat, you never want to talk about it," She said looking away, he came to a screeching halt as he stopped the car in the driveway, he didn't stop the engine,
"Aren't you coming," she asked.
"I need some time to clear my head," he said.
"As you wish," she said and slammed the door shut, she had reached the limit of her patience she couldn't take it anymore, she was so angry with him for believing someone else forgetting everything that they shared together. She was not someone to just give up, but making a marriage work was a two way process and right now only she was the one trying. She let herself inside the house feeling defeated the hope she had at the beginning of the night washed away by the storm that had just passed.
**********
Virat opened the door to the house, he had driven far just a little away from the house because he didn't want to talk to her while he was angry, she was right, and he had listened to Deepthi even after knowing how happy Manvi was about the baby.
The house was in absolute darkness, he slowly went upstairs to their room, she wasn't in the room, the bed was not even slept in, he went to the baby's room she wasn't their either.
"Manvi," he called getting worried, he went in to the kitchen, "where could she have gone," he took his phone out to call her when he saw a letter on the counter. He lifted it slowly his hands shaking as to what he might read.
Dear Virat,
I tried my best, but I guess my best wasn't enough. I thought you knew better than anyone but I guess I was wrong.
You never listened to my side of the story at least now please do. We never talked about having kids Virat and it came as a shock to me when I found out. I didn't know the first thing about being a mother. But when I saw our baby on the monitor I knew that this was the best thing that had ever happened to me. I never told you that I was scared in the beginning because it didn't seem important. What was important was that both of us were excited to bring a new life into this world.
I don't know what people may have said against me, but I want you to know how much I wanted our baby, it killed me Virat when I found out I had lost our baby. You were with me at first but then when you started pushing me away I started feeling that somehow it was my fault that I had a miscarriage, somehow if I had been more careful then it wouldn't have happened. But I was careful Virat, you never let me do anything in the house that time, but I still had a miscarriage. Did you really think the pain I felt that day was all an act?
Virat looked up from the letter tears streaming down his face as he thought back to the fateful day.
"Good Morning," Manvi said as she woke up and gave Virat a kiss on the cheek as he was lazily hugging a pillow.
"Hmmm, it's Saturday Manvi," he said and turned around covering his head with the pillow.
She smiled to herself and got up from the bed; she felt a pain in her stomach but didn't take much notice because she thought the baby was kicking. But as she started walking the pain got worse and became unbearable. She held the bathroom door unable to move because of the pain.
"Virat," she gasped as she collapsed to the ground.
"Manvi," he said and jumped out of bed seeing her on the floor.
"It wasn't your fault," Virat said as he remembered telling Manvi that they had lost the baby.
"Virat," she asked as she opened her eyes, she was feeling drowsy with all the medication.
"Hey baby, how are you doing," he asked his eyes red and puffy.
"What happened, why am I on medication Virat, that's going to hurt the baby," she said.
"I'm so sorry baby, but," he said unable to bring himself to say it, he took a deep breath and mustered all the strength he had and said, "We couldn't save the baby,"
"What do you mean," she asked, not understanding what he meant, her hand moved to her stomach and she could feel the stitches on her belly, the sedatives had made her numb and she hadn't been able to feel it below. Tears started falling down her cheeks as the realisation hit her.
"Virat," she sobbed her hand still on her stomach, he couldn't bear to see her like this and he pulled her in his arms and let her pour her heart out.
"No Manvi it was not all an act," he said to himself.
It really hurt to think that you let a third person interfere in our lives, we were never like that, we never let the world know our problems, we worked them out together, I wanted to make things work so much Virat but you never let me. I don't want to give up on us Virat but I need some time. I always believed that the Virat I fell in love with was lost and I just had to find him, but I'm tired Virat, tired of fighting with you, tired of trying to get back what we had because I'm only one who's trying.
Please don't worry about me, I'm going to stay with a friend for a few days, I just need some time to clear my head. You've had a lot of time to clear your head that's all you do these days, now it's my chance.
I love you Virat, I always will but I need to do this because it feels like I'm the only one in this marriage, and a marriage needs two people.
Love
Mannu
"No Manvi, please don't leave me," he said, "I need you, I can't live without you,"
He slowly ran his hand over the letter which was stained with tears and he knew that she had been crying while writing.
"I'm sorry mannu, please come back," he whispered.
**************
Hope you like it, and hope its not too draggy, I think I'm becoming too emotional over this one. Let me know what you think. Thank you all for the love. Will send out PM's soon.
Love Nush
