Chapter 10
The next week was a week of pleasurable torture for Arnav. He met his little gypsy each morning. Still somewhat shy around him she was slowly coming around. He discovered that she adored sweets. She was absent minded most of the time, existing in some little world of her own. She adored that kid goat of hers; if anything Shemaroo was even scattier headed than her, Arnav realized amusedly. They suited each other perfectly.
In this one week, Khushi found happiness, a commodity which had been rather short supplied in her young life so far. Although he intimidated her, she found herself more and more drawn to him. He was rather quick tempered, she had discovered but at the same time he had a very charismatic charm that fascinated her.
She existed in a state of extreme happiness; so much so that it was becoming increasingly difficult to hide it from her Maayi. She lived for the time they spent together each morning. That morning she hurried out of their tent in to the forest. She was late for meeting him and she practically flew towards the clearing, reaching there just a few minutes before him.
When Arnav cantered in on Sultan's back, he found his little gypsy leaning against a tree trunk, looking flushed and completely beautiful. She was dressed in a pink and purple dress that floated around her slim legs. She had on that gorgeous head dress that she had had on the first time he had seen her, her bangles and the ever present anklets on her ankles.
He dismounted and approached her, all the while staring intently at her and true to form, she blushed wildly. He smiled at her red cheeks. She blushed at the slightest provocation and he loved to say things that made her blush! He drew near her and said huskily,
"Khushi, tum theek ho?"
"Haan….haan kyun?"
"Wo, you are blushing so much that I just had to ask!"
As soon as he said this, predictably her color rose even higher and Arnav laughed loudly. Seeing him laugh, Khushi pouted adorably and turning away from him, she lifted her dainty nose in the air, ignoring him while he laughed. Shaking his head at the adorable picture she made, pouting like that, Arnav slid one hand around her jaw and turned her face to his. She resisted but gave in, looking at him with that half angry and completely beautiful look on her face. He studied that little face and shaking his head, he flicked her nose, saying, "your nose is red".
Immediately she raised her hand and covered her nose, glaring at him.
"Ok sweetheart, I'll not tease you anymore. Come on; smile for me will you." Arnav cajoled her and true to form, she didn't resist, taking her hand away and giving him a shy smile.
He took her in his arms, drawing her in for a hug. She fit in to his frame perfectly and Arnav nuzzled his face in her hair. Hesitantly she slid her arms around his neck and reciprocated. They remained in a hug for some time before Arnav remembered the present he got for her.
Drawing back reluctantly, he reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out a small square velvet box, holding it out towards her. Khushi looked at the box, round-eyed.
"This is for you Khushi."
"For me?"
"Hmmm."
"What is it?"
"Since it's your present, find out for yourself!"
Inspite of his invitation, Khushi studied the small box hesitantly, her hands fisted in her skirts, looking ill at ease.
"Oh for God's sake," Arnav muttered. Flipping open the box, he tilted it towards Khushi whose eyes rounded even more while her mouth dropped in a perfect 'O'. Arnav laughed at her, shaking his head. Extracting the small item from its bed of white silk, he pocketed the box and held it out for her, saying,
"Give me your hand Khushi."
In answer she fisted her hands even tightly in her skirts and shook her head.
"What the hell!" Arnav said in bemusement.
"Khushi?"
"Nahi Maharaja Saheb, I cannot accept that gift."
"Why ever not?"
"Hum banjaare kisise choodiyan nahi le sakte hai."
"What?"
"Ha Maharaja Saheb, in out tribe girls cannot accept bangles from anyone. They signify so much of our heritage and are a part of our personality. When we live with our parents or guardians they buy it for us. During our marriage proceedings, our future husband's family gifts it to us and after marriage only our husband gets it for us."
"What a funny custom!"
"Maybe but that is the way it is."
Arnav studied the bangle while Khushi looked at his face which looked slightly disappointed.
"Maharaja Saheb?"
"Hmmm"
"Waise that choodi is very beautiful," Khushi mumbled softly. And indeed it was a beautiful piece of jewellery. It was of gold with tiny diamonds studded around it; a truly delicate piece which would have looked heavenly on Khushi's wrist. Arnav continued to study it when something occurred to him.
"Very well Khushi. I'll hold on to this bangle for now and will give it to you when you are mine, which by the way shouldn't be long now."
At this Khushi lowered her head shyly while a smiling Arnav pocketed the bangle before drawing her close for a kiss which she let him take. At the escalation of passion between them, Arnav drew back and controlled himself with an effort while a blushing Khushi stepped back and looked away.
Once he was back in control, Arnav remembered the other present he got for her. He walked over to Sultan and retrieved a small packet from the saddle bag. He handed it to Khushi, saying,
"You couldn't accept the bangle but I'm sure you can accept this."
'This' turned out to be jalebis and Khushi gave a small gasp of delight before biting in to the sweets with relish while an amused and indulgent Arnav watched her.
Very soon it was time for Khushi to go and wrapping the remainder sweets to take with her, she was off but not before Arnav had kissed her again. As he watched her dashing off it never occurred to him that things would change between them so soon.
As soon as she left, he also made his way back. There was a party in Devgarh Palace that evening in honor of Naina and her family. It would also be an opportunity for them to meet in a social environment.
Back in the banjaara camp, Madhumati waited for Khushi to come back; she had some news for her daughter. She herself had waited for this news ever since a 6 year old Khushi had come to live with her and Madhumati was happy. At long last her daughter had a chance at a respectable life!
