CHAPTER 11

Amar ran out of the auditorium, trying to get a hold over himself. He paused at the fountain and the memories came rushing back to him. He closed his eyes and his knees gave way. He sank down on the lawn exhaustedly. He could not believe that it had all been a lie.

He heard footsteps approaching him and felt someone place a hand on his shoulder. He opened his eyes and there she was! Her face just inches away from his...her lips curled into an angelic smile, totally oblivious of his inner turmoil. "You are actually sleeping here Kunwar?" she gasped with fake anger. "Mere dance kya itna bore tha?" He stared at her with his eyes wide. Since when did she become callous? "So what do you think?" she asked with nervousness. Amar stared at her blankly. "About the dance..." Shakti specified. Amar took a deep breath and asked;" Didn't that kiss mean anything to you?" Shakti stared at him with her eyes wide with shock. "I thought it was special," Amar continued in a whisper. "At least for me it was. But I guess everything about me is just insignificant for you now. Why would you care about your small-town best friend when you've got a rich Ukraine guy, right?" Shakti's confused face transformed into anger at the last sentence. "Stop being so damn possessive Amar! You have no right to question my character!" "Do I have any freakin' right when it comes to you?" Amar cried out in frustration. "Or am I just meant to fulfill your desires?" There was silence for a moment. Shakti stared at him in horror with her eyes welling up. "I can't believe you just said that," she whispered in a broken voice. "Tumhe sach much jaanna hain why I prefer Austin? Coz he has never considered our relationship as physical!" "I am glad we cleared that," Amar replied, stonily. "Me too," Shakti answered emotionlessly. She turned around and stormed back to the auditorium. Amar stared after her with tears streaming down his cheeks.

NEXT DAY

"Do you have any idea how much we are going to miss you?"

"Stop being so dramatic girls...It's not like we're never gonna meet again!"

"It feels like that!"

"You still haven't told us why you are leaving?"

"My journey in Ukraine is over. I have to go. Explore my options."

"Without us?"

"Are you willing to come with me Al? Without your boyfriend?"

"Um..."

"I know your answer! Anyways, you ARE coming to the airport to drop me right?!"

"Of course!"

KIEV HOTEL

"Come on Amar, main girls ka kal ka performance dekh raha hoon!" Archie called out to Amar who was sitting alone with a depressed look. "Mood nahi hain," Amar muttered. "Kabse bol raha hain mood nahi hain! Problem kya hain?" Archie asked in irritation. "Nothing," Amar replied, shortly. Archie muttered curses under his breath and turned on the TV. Amar glanced up occasionally as he watched the three girls sizzle the dance floor. He stared at Shakti and felt his heart shatter all over again. The dance ended and Austin and Shakti's duet was announced. Amar badly wanted to smash the television screen but didn't have enough energy left in his body. The duet continued with Archie's frequent wows'. After what seemed like an eternity it ended and to Amar's horror, the proposal had been taped as well. He watched it carefully, wondering when he had turned into such a masochist. Austin's dramatic speech ended and Amar noticed something which shocked him to the core. "SHIT!" he cried out loud, scaring the hell out of Archie. "What is wrong with you dude?" Archie cried out, rubbing his ears. "I made a huge mistake!" Amar replied, not taking his eyes off the screen. "I need to talk to Shakti." "But she has gone..." Archie said in surprise. "Gone where?!" Amar shouted. "To the airport!" Amar dashed out of the door just as soon as Archie had completed his sentence.
