Chapter Twelve:
We Talk

"Nani, where from did you buy the jalebis yesterday?" Arnav asked as he sat to have lunch. The eyes of Nani, Khushi and Hari Prakaash were wide at hearing that.

"Why?" Nani asked to know what he thought of them.

"Actually, they were very good and I want to have some today. We can order always from that shop."

"Which shop?" Nani winked at the others, and tried hard to suppress a smile.

"The one you have bought jalebis from."

"We have not bought jalebis."

"What? But'yesterday'Khushi.." Arnav looked at Khushi confusedly, and nani burst out a laughter.

"Khushi made them." Nani stated.

"Really? Did you?" Arnav asked Khushi, and suddenly he remembered that she was working in a sweet shop.

"Yes. I'll make jalebis if you want to have some."

"Oh no! No, it's ok."

"I really want to make jalebis."

"Just forget it."

"You will have jalebis with your dinner." Khushi stated.

"There is no need for that, plus you have to be with Muskaan."

"It won't take so much time. Ok? I want to make some jalebis," Khushi said as a matter of fact that Arnav had to accept. Nani was looking at them enjoying the scene in front of her eyes. She was flabbergasted to see Arnav having a conversation with someone and talking not rudely.

In her whole life, Khushi had never been so nervous and careful while making jalebis like she was this time. She wanted everything to be perfect about the oil, the flour, the syrup and every ingredient; she actually passed a prayer for that.

One of the reasons that Arnav has lunch at home is because he has dinner alone at night. Khushi helped Hari Prakaash with Arnav's dinner after making sure that both Muskaan and Nani were asleep.

"Hi," Arnav greeted taking off his suit's coat, and sat on the chair. "Hi," Khushi reciprocated. " I think I should leave now." Khushi stood.

"But you didn't have your dinner, Khushi didi," Hari Prakaash said.

"I'll have it with Buaji."

"You can stay till I have the jalebis so that you'll know what I think about them," Arnav said.

"They are the best," Khushi said confidently.

"We will see," Arnav challenged. Khushi sat on a chair, and Arnav started with the jalebis.

"So, you had a shop to sell sweets. Why sweets?" Arnav asked starting a conversation.

"I love sweets a lot'.whenever I'm overwhelmed by happiness or sorrow, I make them which calms me down."

"How long have you worked there?" Arnav munched another jalebis enjoying the taste.

"For around three months."

"So, you are here in Delhi since six months, right?"

"Yes."

Arnav felt curiosity to know the reason behind quitting her job as he remembered what Khushi had told nani the other day.

"You are a very good daughter, Bitya. May God bless you." Nani put a hand on Khushi's forehead. "But why you stopped?"

"Some guys misbehaved wit me as I'm a girl and there is no one to protect me here," Khushi replied thoughtfully. Making a disgusted face as she remembered something she did not like. They were unwelcome memories for her. She shrugged the thoughts off, and smiled at nani. (chap Five)

"I have never enjoyed sweets as I'm enjoying having your jalebis. They are delicious." They looked at each other for some moment; Khushi hardly could utter a barely audible 'Thank you' when Arnav looked away breaking the eye lock busying himself with another piece of jalebi while Khushi kept looking at hi, at his throat as he swallowed what he ate. She did not know why she always stares there, 'Maybe because of the dream she had,' she reasoned to herself. Her breaths hitched because of the havoc which was created inside her as she felt butterflies in her stomach.

"I have to go home now. Good night." Khushi wanted to get rid of the feelings she had before she could make something silly.

"Good night." Arnav did not know what was 'wrong' with him. He never had any non-professional conversation with anyone outside his family, and he actually enjoyed that as he remembered himself many years ago, the young lively Arnav, before his life turned upside down. He wanted to stop his cold behaviour, shouting, apologizing then the reconciliation before repeating the same things; he was fed up with that, and he knew that Khushi does not deserve all of that.

.

Khushi was overwhelmed when she returned home; she did not have dinner with Buaji, but she made it and did all the house chores enjoying them, and sand 'Bahara Bahara' (From I Hate Luv Story Movie) dancing around the house.

She changed into her night clothes at midnight, but she was not sleepy. She remembered his praise, 'I have never enjoyed sweets as I'm enjoying having your jalebis. They are delicious.' She was surprised with the way he challenged her and talked as if it was the most normal thin in the world, as if they know each other since a very long time as he did not hesitate, or showed the angry Arnav.

.

Arnav opened his wardrobe to get ready for work to be stopped with a nice fragrance that filled his nostrils; he inhaled the smell deeply liking it.

"Khushi, what's this fragrance in my wardrobe?" Arnav asked as Khushi stepped in the room having a glass of milk for Muskaan.

"It's jasmine. Muskaan liked it, so I put some between her clothes to get the fragrance."

"It is so'," Arnav said while inhaling it thinking for the right word.

"Intoxicating," Khushi whispered meaning his own fragrance.

"Yeah. I should check the outer garden today," He said turning to choose a suit to wear.

"Arnavji'" Khushi sounded hesitant.

"Yes?"

"I think you should take Muskaan out tomorrow since it is Sunday." Khushi suggested.

"Do you think so?" He asked feeling overprotective towards his daughter as he does not like the hustle and bustle, and the pollution around.

"Yes. She needs to communicate with other kids. It's better for her to go to some public places. You can take her to a park or somewhere else."

"Alright then. Let's say India Gate's park, I don't know any other place to take her."

"That's fine."

"Tomorrow at five o'clock we are going to leave."

"Me too?"

"Yes. I can't take care of her alone there. I know this is the second Sunday wouldn't be free on, but you will get paid for it." Arnav said unsure. His words hurt her because she had never thought about money when it comes to Muskaan, but it's her job after all, she consoled herself.

At reaching home, Khushi called her family to get updates about her sister's wedding. Her Amma told her that the marriage was going to be after two months till both the families could arrange everything smoothly. Khushi talked with Payal for more than half an hour before going to bed as she wanted to make Aloo Paratha, Kheer and Halwa Puri for the picnic.

*****************

.

At four p.m. Khushi left to RM with a bag had some boxes and needed stuff. For a moment, Arnav just stared at her as he was seeing her for the first time wearing kameez with jeans, and she looked ravishing with no doubt; she got nervous feeling his gaze on her.

.

Arnav sat on a bench watching Khushi playing with Muskaan in a swing. Seeing his daughter very happy, he was glad that he agreed to come and thankful to Khushi.

"Papa, aaja." He heard Muskaan calling him; he did not want to play with her with such crowd around, so he chose to observe her, but he could not refuse her, "Ok, princess."

He started swinging Muskaan too lightly as he reached her. "This is too much," Khushi laughed confusing Arnav. "What?"

"You're overprotective,"

"I should be. This is my daughter. You don't expect me to let her fall."

"I don't mean this, but what you're doing is not enjoying at all." Khushi held the other side of the swing for Muskaan to show him how he should have done that. They swing her together enjoying her giggles. Arnav found it enjoyable to do that as he was a part of his daughter's happiness. "Thank you, Khushi." They stared at each other stopping pushing the swing for Muskaan. What Arnav did not realize is that he can hurt Khushi and heal the pain he caused at the same time unconsciously.

"I think Muskaan is hungry now." Khushi broke the eyes' contact. She walked to where Arnav had been sitting earlier, and opened a box. Arnav sat on the bench with Muskaan on his lap.

"Fruit salad?" He asked.

"Yes. I've asked Hari Prakaash Ji to make it for Muskaan." Khushi was feeding Muskaan, who was sitting on Arnav's lap, carefully.

"I think Muskaan needed this." Arnav spoke breaking the awkward silence between them, and Khushi just nodded agreeing with him.

"Sorry, I haven't asked earlier, but'have you cancelled any plan because of this picnic?"

"No, not really'I just wanted to spend some time with Buaji." Khushi replied while feeding Muskaan without looking at Arnav.

"Okay'.you will take a break on the next Saturday and Sunday, alright?"

"Alright." Khushi mouthed inaudibly thinking that he was again commanding.

*****

Precap:

"Your daughter is a cute girl, she's got your smile," said the woman to Khushi in front of Arnav causing her flush to turn red embarrassingly.
