Chapter Seven:
'I was about to be raped for God's sake' Her shout echoed in his mind rooting him in his place with wide eyes at the outburst.
"Naniji, did you hear the last news?" Ankita's scared voice made nani worried.
"What news, bitya?"
"A girl was raped when she was going home after college in the bus. Those bas***ds stopped the bus and threaten people to move out of it. What can be more important to a girl more then her izzat, reputation and purity. They have destroyed everything the poor soul had that she committed suicide after what happened to her." Her tears were flowing feeling horrible to know the evil this world had.
Not only Ankita's words, but also knowing the cruelty of the society and how people talk about others, made him realize the bad situation Khushi went through. Thinking that Khushi had faced all of this, and he was arguing with her, made him feel sorry for her.
'It's all because of her! Why she insisted to argue with me and question me?' He headed towards the washroom for a cold shower even though it was night. he just wanted to ease what he felt at the moment while her words invaded his mind.
He... beside Muskaan, and kissed her with a biter smile. 'Have you wished Muskaan for her birthday? No? Why are you doing this to yourself? Till when?' his mind automatically replayed what Khushi said.
'Am I wrong? Should I do that? Why I should deprive Muski from something that I can give? Isn't she everything for him? So, how can he not do that?' He was in a dilemma, but his heart wanted to say those words for her, and unconsciously but willingly, his lips whispered, "Happy Birthday, princess." He smiled and kissed her cheeks fondly feeling like waking her up and tell her that, but she wouldn't understand, right? He would never deprive her from anything in this world. Arnav put his hand on his palm resting his elbow on the pillow to look at his daughter who was sleeping on his right side. 'What will Muski think when she know that I didn't celebrate her first two birthdays? No, I should do that from now onwards. Khushi was right.' The thought of Khushi reminded him again of the conversation they had. 'The girl has lost her parents in a young age', but the same happed to him'my parents' death affected me too', but she is a girl, who had to live with his maasi and now she is here to help that family not caring about herself, and she was about to be raped'All this sacrifice as a reward for what they did! How brave this girl is!' He was convincing himself that Khushi had a miserable past, maybe more than him. He was impressed with what she did. Every time this girl manages to surprise him.
'Again he was wrong! Why he always like this with her? Why cannot he just listen to her without hurting her?' Maybe because he was not used to listen to anyone except nani as she brought him up and took care of him, and his Di, who would always make him do what she wants willingly or unwillingly. She moved to the United Kingdom after marrying her best friend Rahul. He looked at his watch to see if the time was proper to call her, and because of the time difference between India and UK, he found it appropriate to call her as she would be home after work. He needed to talk to someone who can understand him and who can be better more then his Di. He called her and asked about her husband, her son and the work. Anjali was happy to hear from him after three days, and she complained about that saying, 'I know you will say work pressure, Di. I know the excuse, Chotey!' He knows that his Di can figure out everything regarding him without him needing to say anything. This is how their relationship is. He was used to calling her late at night in India timing as she and her husband work leaving their four-year-old son with his nanny. His Di was always an ambitious woman who wanted to do something by herself without being dependant on anyone as she was before when Arnav was taking care of everything for her and her needs, thus she wanted to be independent.
He did not say anything about what was happening with him, but he felt lighter after calling her. Arnav disconnected the call after promising that he would make nani call her by morning.

Khushi fell on her bed crying badly; because of him again she is remembering what she had tried to forget. Her breath hitched as she continued to sob. She told him something she had not told anyone about except her parents- the stars. Even Buaji does not know about the danger which had threatened her Sanka Devi's life as Khushi did not want Buaji to be scared or ask her brother to take her back to Lucknow.
"Sanka Devi, Kya hua?" The continuous knocks urged Khushi to wipe off her tears and reply with a hoarse voice, "Yes, Buaji. I'm coming to make dinner. You go and have some rest." Buaji shook her head and went to her room wondering what happened to her Titaliya.
Khushi did not know how she made the dinner. She was relieved that Buaji was not in the kitchen with her, otherwise she would have asked endless questions seeing Khushi's pale face. Khushi sat on the table just not to make her Buaji doubt anything. She ate two or three bites absent-mindedly with difficulty before excusing herself saying that she is sleepy and tired.
"Khusi, what's the matter?"
"Nothing, Buaji. Just tired." She tried to smile.
"Take some rest and do not stress yourself, Bitya. I'll clean after the dinner."
.
.
She looked at the stars; she was not sure if she could share this with her parents as she herself did not know what to gauge from what was happening. 'He always tries to show that I'm a girl, the weakest. This is the selfishness of some men. Yes, I've questioned him, but am I the one who gave him this past?' She went to her bed lying there feeling her body (Due to the way he shook her shoulders) and mind very tired from all of this. She closed her eyes to prevent the tears from falling down.
'Why cannot everything be normal? Why he has to behave like that?'
She felt bad for Muskaan, who has to live without a mother since her birth. She felt bad for her if her father would be still like this in future. Like always, she had to put everything deep inside her small and our heart and lock it tightly. This is life; we should lock everything in our hearts to live, to survive, to move on.
"I'm not a good guy, Khushi. I was not a good husband."
"I know what I did to her! I know what she did for me! I know she wanted Muskaan at any cost be it her own life. But why she did that for me? I know everything, yet I was an idiot. How could I not be good with her? Misbehave with her? And she tolerated me silently. She gave me her love and Muskaan, who is my life...But what I did?"
'That's why I saw guilt in his eyes,' She realized. Everything started to make sense for her just the missing letters of a scrabble game. 'But what does he mean by not being good?' She was really curious to know more about that relationship. Is it right to know about a relationship between a husband and his wife, but she just wanted to know.
'Why he has to make thing complex?' She sighed feeling the silence around her unbearable just as his outburst was. His whispers, then his shouts all tell how unsure, tormented he is. She turned off the lights feeling the darkness fitting the situation more. As everything about both of them was mysterious and unknown; as no one knew exactly what happened with her nor with him.

She was running with her knees becoming weak as she looked around for help, but no one was there for her. She was panting, the shadow of the man who wants to destroy her life was pursuing her, making her go numb. As is life was about to stop, to end. She was running and panting praying for a savior.
Just then two warm arms were wrapped around her. In the dim light, she could just see his protective chocolate brown eyes which made her relax. She heaved a sigh of relief and rested her head on her savior's chest feeling exhausted.**
She put a hand on her forehead which was drowned with sweat. In fact, her whole body was sweating and trembling. She felt numb as if Arnav's words dig on an old scar. But this time, the nightmare ended with a hope that someone is there for her to save her and protect her. She was restless. "God, please guide me."
.
.
The first sun shines fell on her face making her narrow her eyes and turn to the other side. It was a Sunday and Khushi does not have to work till late. But she was not looking at it from that angle, "Work?" Muskaan is a responsibility for Khushi.
"Uff...I want to sleep." She sighed behaving as a teenage whose mother is forcing her to wake up to go to school. Who can imagine that the wise Khushi is this one? She smiled thinking of Muskaan, but her smile faded at the thought of seeing Arnav. She got up, and took a quick warm shower getting ready for another day. Another day she would see Muskaan, play with her,...Could she predict for the day? Of course no! It's Arnav Singh Raizaada whom were are talking about.
She sighed and smiled remembering when she mimicked him, his chuckle, how it sounded, how dashing he looked, how his whole body was affected and relaxed with that mere chuckle. Just if he does this often,...
