PART 3
Arnav looked at the digital clock on her beside table that read in green 09:13 AM.

He slowly stood up, running a hand down his face.

The doctor had said that they needed to conduct some tests, what kind of tests, and when would they get the results? Arnav thought, feeling completely unaware of what was going on.

He walked out of the room, squinting as the brightly lit hospital hit his eyes, he needed to speak to Doctor Rahoul, find out what they thought was wrong, get Khushi well as soon as possible and leave the hospital.

Arnav walked to the reception of the ward, which was surprisingly quiet, despite the whispers of gossiping nurses sitting on rolling chairs. He saw Doctor Rahoul who was now exiting the ward.

"Doctor!" Arnav called.

He turned around, acknowledging Arnav, "Mr Raizaida, I need to go and check on something, give me ten minutes, why don't you wait in my office?" He motioned to a brown door near the corner of the reception.

"Okay," Arnav replied.

He entered the office, keeping the door open.

There was a wooden desk in the centre of the room where numerous stacks of piles hid it, whilst a tall metal cupboard stood on the left hand side of the room and a water dispenser was found on the right hand side.

Arnav took one of the two seats in front of the desk, wondering why such a formal approach was necessary in simply telling Arnav what tests were required to be carried out.

The ticking of the clock attached to the wall was accompanied with the sound of his loud ringtone, making him jump. He scurried through his pocket and saw the letters, "Di" flashing on his phone.

"Hello?" Arnav answered.

"Chote!" Anjali's concerned voice rang, "how is Khushi-ji?"

"She's sleeping, the doctors want to carry out some tests to find out what's wrong."

"Yes, yes Payal-ji said that, she's coming in a while to the hospital along with her parents, and me and Shyaam-ji will come in the afternoon, he's tired at the moment as he came home really late."

Arnav blood went cold at that.

"Chote?"

"Yes, okay, cool, I'll talk to you in a bit, Di. Bye." He hung up, his grip stiff around his phone.

At that moment Doctor Rahoul entered, smiling at Arnav, "please sit," he said as Arnav began to stand.

Doctor Rahoul took his place behind the desk, clearing his throat as he did so, "so, I'm sure you'd like to discuss the procedures we would like to take in relation to Mrs Raizaida?"

"That's correct," Arnav replied.

The Doctor sighed heavily, "Mrs Raizaida was in deep, deep pain when you admitted her yesterday, and we suspect that is the reason for her fainting yesterday, the problem is what causing is the pain." The doctor looked up, cleared his throat and continued, "and we believe none of her tissues, which in effect are her organs are causing her pain, but instead her bones."

Arnav breath hitched, how could he have not been aware of this? The memory of him thrashing Khushi's head against the wall echoed in his mind.

"S-so what's to be done?" Arnav stammered.

"As I said there are some tests that we wish to carry out."

"What kind of tests?"

"We would like to carry out a biopsy test," Dr Rahoul said his hands folded as they sat in the little room.

Arnav felt like has was falling, as he looked up at the man sitting across him, his eyes wide, permitting the tears that had built up to spill over.

"A biopsy test?" he whispered.

"We carried out an X-Ray yesterday and found something in her bones, and we are not sure if tumour cells are present."

Arnav stared ahead, waiting for him to continue.

"We would like to carry out a needle biopsy, as soon as possible-"

"Do you think she has it?" Arnav asked, not wanting to say the word.

"We are not sure, which is why we wish to carry out the needle biopsy to see if she has bone cancer."

The words hung in the air as Arnav looked around, wanting the doctor to snatch them back, to tell Arnav that in reality Khushi was fine, that she could go home.

But the doctor did none of that, and so the nightmare grew deeper.

"Under Mrs Raizaida's consent we would like to carry it out this afternoon, around four o'clock."

"Of course," Arnav replied, his voice sounded distant, as if thousands of barriers had been thrusted between him and the rest of the world, between him and Khushi.

"She should be waking up any minute now; I will come to discuss the procedure with both of you at one o'clock."

Arnav nodded and stood up shakily.

The walk to Khushi's room seemed like he was walking through a dark tunnel, where no light was present, where no light existed.

He gently opened the door, meeting a nurse who was giving woken, but fragile-looking Khushi, what appeared to be two white and blue pills.

Khushi's eyes darted to him, and then looked away.

There were deep black, grey circle beneath her eyes, and her shoulders were hunched slightly.

She shakily took the glass of water from the nurse and brought it to her lips, revealing a washed-out blue dress they had changed her into.

The nurse gave Khushi a quick smile, took the glass and left them, closing the door behind her.

Khushi side-glanced at Arnav, taking in his expression, "wh-what's happening?" She asked.

"They want to carry out a test."

"Why?" Khushi asked, clenching her jaw at the pain, that had once again, erupted in her ribs.

"Khushi? What is it?" He said, rushing forward.

"It's hurting," she gasped, shocked plastered on her face at the sharpness of the pain.

"Khushi-" he quickly placed himself next to her on the edge of the bed, not having a clue what to do, when he spotted the button that called the nurse.

"Don't," she said, reading his thoughts "the nurse said it would hurt for a bit, u-until the painkillers kick in."

Her breathing slowed down as the pain seeped away, leaving only a throbbing portion of it.

"How is it?" Arnav asked, extending a hand towards her, only to retract it, thinking better of it.

"Better," she replied, not noticing, she looked at him and then his crumpled clothes, "did you stay here over night?"

"Yes," he said, getting up and backing away.

"Why?" She asked, confused.

What was he meant to say to that?

The truth?

Because it would kill me to know that you are in hospital, alone, whilst I have no idea what the hell is going on with your health, and if you're not safe, in front of me, I'll probably go crazy. Oh, and have I mentioned that I love you so much it hurts? He thought to himself.

He shrugged, looking away.

She gazed at him an ache in her heart. The memories of the previous day flashed in her mind and she suddenly felt like she was about to cry. She could not understand her own emotions. Despite what this man thought of her. What he had accused her of. Or how the countless times she suffered due to his actions, she wanted him to care for her. She observed at how his arms were cross over his broad chest and wondered if those arms ever longed to take her in. To hold her. She ached to hold on to his hand, for him to provide a source of comfort. His eyes once again flashed to hers and was surprised that she did not look away. Instead she stared at him, her eyes pleading. He stood watching her. Something changed in the atmosphere as his eyes grew soft and he whispered, "Khushi." He slowly took a step towards her. He saw tears now beginning to pool into her eyes and he took more steps towards her wanting to close the distance between them.

They were suddenly knocked out their trance by a soft knock on the door,

Arnav cleared his throat, turning around and muttered, "come in."

Garima walked in, along with Shashi who was in his wheelchair, pushed by Payal.

"Khushi!" Garima called, as Arnav greeted Babu-ji, taking his place against the wall, giving her family space.

"How are you, Khushi?" Payal asked.

"Fine," she smiled.

"We were so worried," Garima said, placing a hand on her daughter's head.

"There's no reason to worry about me," Khushi replied, whilst Arnav only shook his head at that but said nothing.

"What did the doctor say?" Payal asked Arnav.

"He said that they want to carry out a biopsy," he said looking around the room; confusion was the response to this, except for Babu-ji who had looked down as soon as the words hit his ears.

"W-what's that?" Khushi asked.

Arnav hesistated, "it's a test to see what is causing you pain in your b-bones," it wasn't necessarily a lie, but not the whole truth.

Babu-ji, looked at Arnav, nodding in response, as if approving of Arnav's choice of words.

"Oh, okay," Garima replied, still confused, but leaving the matter. She smiled down at Khushi, "Payal told me how Arnav bitwa was so worried for you, you really are lucky to have a husband like him, Khushi."

Khushi looked at him curiously, whilst he fidgeted with the corner of his sleeve, not looking at her.

She suddenly remembered what had happened before she had blacked out, they were discussing, or he was shouting at her about why he married her.

But it was wrong, misunderstood, all of it.

She needed him to know the truth and yet it seemed he was keener to believe a lie.

How could she get him alone?

"Arnav-ji," Payal said, interrupting Khushi's thoughts, "why don't you go home and rest for a while, we'll stay with Khushi."

Arnav looked at Khushi, as if to ask if he could go? If she would be okay without him?

She nodded at him.

"Right, well I'll be back soon with Di."

He gave her one last look, a lump growing in his throat, as if this was a last goodbye, and the word cancer echoed through his mind, whilst the image of the Khushi in his nightmare flashed threw it.

"Bye," she said, her eyes holding on to his.

Arnav looked down, walking out.

She was left staring at the door, and when it did not open again she turned her attention back to her family.

"Khushi, what happened yesterday?" Payal asked.

"I don't know, I remember my ribs had been hurting quite a lot since the day before yesterday and-"

"Why didn't you say anything?" Garima asked furiously.

"I-I thought it would go away," Khushi shrugged helplessly, "and then it kept hurting and then yesterday-yesterday it seemed to grow worse," she sighed.

"Is anything else hurting?"

"My arms, and my legs," she replied.

"Have they given you anything to eat?" Garima asked, extracting a tiffin from her purse.

"No, Amma, I can't eat, the nurse told me I can't because I have to undergo an anaestetic," her stomach did a somersault; they would put her to sleep?

She shivered involutarily, frightened of the thought that she would be put to sleep.

The Guptas continued to interrogate Khushi until there was nothing else to question her about, after which the conversation led to a lighter tone where they discussed random things, but throughout Khushi was feeling agitated as if time was being wasted, time which she should be talking to Arnav about his misunderstanding.

******************************************************

Arnav walked into the house in a daze, he had spent the drive from the hospital barking out orders to Aman, rescheduling meetings and barging into the house in a whirl of thoughts and emotions as the doctor's words played again and again in his head.

"Chote," Anjali said, hugging him, "how are you?"

"Fine," he voice was slightly gruff.

"What happened?" Anjali said, taking his arm and leading him to sit down on the sofa.

There was no point in lying.

He told her about his conversation with the doctor, whilst Anjali sat there and listened until he had finished.

"Chote, she may not have cancer," Anjali smiled slightly, putting a hand on his shoulder, "the doctors simply wish to rule it out as a possibility."

Arnav nodded, he had told himself that again and again, but it was a possibility, and that alone was enough to petrify him.

"Even if she does," Anjali added, "we'll make sure she gets better."

Arnav then nodded and told Anjali he was going to shower, have something to eat then he wanted to set off to the hospital as soon as possible.

"That's fine, Chote. Me and Shyaam-ji will come with you."

******************************************************

Arnav stood at the bottom of the stairs dressed in his casuals twirling his car keys in his hands. "Di! Come on, now." He shouted for her as he glanced wearily at the time. It was 12:10 already.

"Coming, Chote!" Anjali replied from her room. "You and Shyaam-ji go in the car."

Arnav growled at his name and saw the snake himself descending from the stairs a smirk on his face.

Arnav again looked at the time and took in his brother-in-law stood opposite him.

"Khushi-ji must be feeling rather lonely there, right Sale Saab?" Shyaam asked mockingly, his eyebrows rose. "I'm sure she must be missing me as much as I am missing her."

Arnav looked at him astonished at his foolishness. Despite knowing that Khushi and Shyam had been together, that word sent a piercing through his heart, he hated it whenever he spoke of Khushi.

"Shut up!" Arnav hissed, "You have your wife, my Di! I suggest you focus on her rather than Khushi!" his nostrils flaring, fists clenching at his sides.

Shyam was about to open his mouth when Anjali limped down the stairs, a small smile on her face. "Come on then, Chote, let us go."

Precap:

"You'll feel sleepy in a minute," the nurse said injecting the substance into her.

Arnav could feel Khushi shaking against him, "Khushi, don't be scared, you'll be awake in no time," he smiled slightly at her, trying to reassure her.

She looked frantically at him, her eyes drooping slightly.

He took her hand without thinking, feeling her relax, he rubbed small circles in her hand with his thumb, and within seconds he felt her drift off into a sleep
