~Chapter 1: The Hangover~
Sunlight streamed in through the partially drawn curtains and shone on the figure lying on the bed. Being early winter, the intensity of the sun rays was sparse and took time to stir the person from sleep. And finally when they did, the person gave out a long curse. The incoming light was too strong for the eyes and they were immediately shut off. But sleep couldn't return and the person decided to get up. He opened his eyes slowly, making sure to shield them from direct sunlight unlike earlier. Once he had adjusted his vision, his eyes took in the place where he had woken up. Not recollecting to have ever visited this room earlier, he raised both his hands to rub his eyes. And that's when he realized that he was holding a hand of a person sleeping peacefully beside him. Arnav Singh Raizada gave out yet another expletive.
Oh God! What had he done! This wasn't the first occasion when he had woken up in a disoriented state, but it was a first to have some person sleeping beside him after such a night. Now that his sight had resumed to its normal state, he saw that the person next to him was a girl. Her face couldn't be seen since it was pressed inside the pillow. "Shit!" he muttered to himself. "What had he done last night?" His thinking was muddled which clearly indicated that he had drunk more than usual. But that wasn't new to him. For the past several months now he had been drowning his sorrows with alcohol; the only difference being that it hadn't produced anyone in his bed the next morning. He released the girl's hand from his hold and began massaging his forehead in an effort to reduce its throbbing and make him recall the past night's happenings. He hoped the person next to him would provide some answers.
As if on cue, the girl moved. Arnav remained stationary as she went through various stages of getting up; rubbing her eyes, stretching her arms to ward off any nicks, yawning, before finally looking towards him and acknowledging his presence. What followed next made him wish she hadn't woken up.
"Aaarrgh! What are you doing here? I knew it! I just knew it! I shouldn't have believed you when you said that you were innocent! Hey Devi Maiya! Hamaari raksha karo is raakshas se!" Khushi Kumaari Gupta screamed.
"Ok'enough! Don't shout! Your voice is grating my ears. And this hangover'Uff! Lower your voice girl!" Arnav shouted back.
"Hello! Don't you feel any shame? You brought a girl in a strange place; you took advantage of the girl's helplessness and you're asking me to stop shouting! How can you even say that?"
"Stop it! Here I'm having the hangover of hangovers and you just keep on increasing your voice by the decibel every minute. Besides, why are you accusing me? I don't even know you! I was waiting for you to wake up so that you could tell me who you are!"
"Haww! You don't know me? You say you freaking don't know me? You really are a spy! I made a mistake by apologizing to you! I thought you are upright'and'and' virtuous. But I was so wrong! Gosh! Now tell me how and why did you bring me here?"
"Aren't you listening to me? I don't know you and I don't know this place. By the looks of it I think this is some hotel room. But it isn't the hotel room that I checked in. I'm as clueless as you. And you say you know me? How? Where and when did we meet? And if you remember meeting me then why can't I recall the same?"
"Because you are putting up an act mister! I know you guys very well. You act all innocent and then when your victim lets her guard down, you finish your assigned task. So tell me, what did he ask you to do? Or did he just ask you to follow me?"
"Listen girl'"
"Its Khushi!"
"Ok Khushi, I really don't remember you. I might have had a blackout yesterday and that explains the amnesia. Why don't you tell me how you know me so that we can figure out how we ended up here?"
"Fine, I'll believe for the moment that you are saying the truth. I shall be honest to you. Even I don't remember how we ended up in this room. You don't think we'." Khushi trailed off, her eyes lowering with embarrassment at the meaning behind her unfinished sentence.
"No Khushi, are you that innocent? Your expression tells me you are. Relax, nothing happened, we are completely clothed. Now back to the matter in hand. Tell me how you know me." God! This girl was so guileless. He just hoped he would recover from this amnesia soon. As angry as he was at the whole world, he didn't want an innocent girl to bear the brunt of it. And so he waited for her reply.
Khushi took in a deep breath deciding what to say to the person sitting in front of him. Sure, she remembered their complete conversation before the blackout and it hadn't been pleasant. She had ranted on him at the bar after having spotted him as she had entered it. And like now, he had denied all accusations of spying that she had laid on him. Finally she had asked for forgiveness to him and then proceeded to accompany him for a drink when he accepted her apology. She began to give him a tailored account of last night's dialogue.
"Yesterday evening I came by the bar where you were drinking. Actually I had this notion that you have been following me for the past few days. You turn up wherever I go or I am about to go and hence I deduced that you were spying on me." At Arnav's raised eyebrow she said, "Please let me continue before you begin with your questions. So as I was saying", Khushi said, trying to pick up where she had left, "I started arguing with you. At first you just brushed me off thinking that I was in high spirits like you. The bartender told me that you had already downed five shots and that you were asking for more. And then you said that you weren't aware of my identity. You know they say that a person speaks the truth when he has alcohol in his system; you completely reeked of it and hence I decided to believe you. I was about to leave; having cleared my suspicion when you got a little emotional."
"Ok now I have to stop you. I allowed you to go on with your monologue but that doesn't mean that I can't catch a lie. I don't get emotional! Arnav cut in, his voice emphatic.
"Arre baba, listen to me I said you got emotional doesn't mean you cried your eyes out. It's just that you kept on saying 'Why did it have to happen to me?' and then you started to ramble a few names of people who were responsible for your state, all incoherent. That brings me to an important question, has anything bad happened in your life?"
Arnav's breath stiffened at the last question, but he didn't show any emotion. Khushi was about to repeat her question but something about Arnav stopped her from doing so. So she continued saying.
"Then you asked me to join you. I declined but you said that you didn't have any friends and you were quite lonely. You also said that the fact that you had to ask a stranger to accompany you for drinks said a lot about you. You also said please", she said with a twinkle in her eyes, "and I couldn't deny a well mannered guy. So I joined you. Bas that's all I know."
"Hmm. So maybe we drank a lot and the bartender must have called for a cab to take us to the nearest hotel; that explains how we landed here. I think we have nothing to worry about Khushi. We shall get rid of our headaches first and then go on our own ways. Sounds good?"
"Okay." Khushi too was satisfied by Arnav's deduction and decided it would be better if they parted ways and that too soon. She was worried that he would recover his memory and remember all the things Khushi had accused him of. This person was still a stranger to her and she didn't know if there was a sharp temper behind his silent and brooding demeanor. So it would be good for both of them if she returned back to her house at the earliest. But she also had to get rid of this headache and improve her appearance before leaving the hotel. So she began combing her hair with her fingers. Having noticed that her rubber band was encircling her wrist, she began to tie her hair in a pony tail and addressed Arnav simultaneously, "You said your head was throbbing with pain. Why don't you call room service and ask if they have something for it?"
"Yeah, I shall do that." He picked up the phone and started speaking to the person at the other end, mentioning their requirement. Even as he continued the call, he noticed Khushi's changing expressions. Puzzled by them, he quickly finished the call and asked her to tell him what was bothering her. However Khushi seemed lost and only after repeated nudging, she came back from her thoughtful expression. By doing so, she was once again manifested to the thing that had sent her to being pensive.
"What is that on your finger?" Khushi asked, motioning towards the ring on the ring finger of his left hand.
Arnav followed her line of vision and raised his hand. "It's a ring, but it isn't mine. Besides it seems a bit feminine with the assortment of diamonds and all."
"Of course it's feminine" Khushi replied, "Because it is mine!" Even as she said it her right hand involuntarily moved to where she usually wore her ring; her index finger on the left hand. But there was no ring present. Instead, a shiny gold band adorned her left ring finger. Arnav caught on to the ring and shrieked, "Hey! That's my ring!" It didn't take long for them to deduce that something more had happened than what they had deduced. Their thoughts were moving in the same direction and both of them exclaimed at the same time, not wanting their conclusion to be the truth. But here was no denying that which was obvious and their eyes matched; their faces mirroring the same horrified expression,
"Shit! Did we get married last night?"
~Sneak Peak Of Next Chapter~
She started moving back with retreating steps as he started making his way towards her; to say, she was not in her normal state, quite drunk but still was conscious of all the happenings around her.
