I agree with everything you said, but I just wanted to add two things. First, use the spacebar!
Honestly, there people who have a whole chapter with no spaces, so it just looks like one HUGE word. I bow down to those of you who can actually read something like that, but I find it not only irritating (because it's so hard to read it), but I also find it kind of insulting to people who take their time to read these stories because it shows that someone is just that lazy, that they don't want to press the spacebar. It's been invented to create spaces. Use it!
Second, don't use emoticons in your stories!
I used to use emoticons in my stories, but then I stopped because it seemed distracting. They're okay to use in posts and notes, but in an actual chapter, it kind of just irks me. And a person should be able to describe their character's emotions and feelings without using emoticons.
