The ones who leave a detailed comment telling me what they liked best are perfect.
The ones who reply with 'please continue', an emoticon, or 'awesome!' are perfect too.

And yes, I even love the readers who res and leave me hanging, because it tells me that they opened my post!

I love the readers who press the like button. When I was a silent reader, I didn't even do that, did I?

And yes, I am in love with all the readers who increase the view count of my stories, even if they didn't press the like button. It shows me that they liked my title enough to click on it.

I would be ecstatic the day someone actually trolls my posts in comic sans pink font, it woould tell me I have arrived on this forum!😆

So that's my definition of a good reader. One who is free to read, like, comment or just walk away, but one who has taken the time from his/her equally hectic schedule to open my post.

Reading, and writing, in my opinion, is best with no rules, no boundaries, no codes of proper conduct.

Maybe that's just me, but I like any and all readers.
I'm easy that way!

How the hell did I get lucky enough to know you, Meeraji and Mentyji and the rest?

V-Sorry for spamming. Heehee. 😃

@ Euphoria, Chutki, Tiya229/Tiya/Tiyali : Aap log bhi na!

I just feel that if the writers want to be free to write on their own terms, readers should have equal freedom too.
After all, any reader is better than no reader, right?

I do agree with you.I as a reader do feel responsible to give feedback to the writer who has taken pains to entertain us readers and I do give my honest opinions about the story .I hate bashing in the name of criticism.
We do not have any right to hurt anybody in the face of having "right to expression".

See here is the thing. Most of the readers here on IF aren't really looking for FF's apart from romance. And so when they see one, they immediately want the story to lead to Arnav-Khushi getting together.
However you say that you character suffers from oedipus complex. The thing is, most readers when they click on a story, do not really go that deep into analysing characters and trying to find the psychological meaning, symbolism or side of them. I know, it can be frustrating when they don't, however maybe put up a note letting them know that this story deals with characters who are suffering from oedipus, and you would appreciate them keeping that in mind while reading the story?

However if the reason they are bashing you is literally because they want romance all around - a suggestion to those readers would be to stop reading and let the writer do what they want to do, because eventually they are not writing something they hate - they are writing and presenting something they like and are proud of. Therefore to get comments that you are not liking it, or to bash the author without any reasoning apart from wanting romance - is highly unfair, as you are not the one writing the story, and you are not the one taking the time out to write it.

Right now, my pet peeves are readers not reading the Author's notes, reader's res-ing and leaving, and readers telling me how my plot should play out.

1. Not reading A/N
There is a reason why I write Author's notes. One is to show my appreciation to the readers - because I read all the comments. Second is to give you a hint on either where the story is headed, when I will be updating next, why some things are happening the way they are, and to answer the repetitive questions I found while reading all the comments.
So all in all, the author's notes are to provide the readers with extra information to hopefully give them more of an insight into the characters and story, and to make them enjoy the story more.

But when the comments come about, it is blatantly clear which ones have read the note, and which ones have not.
i understand that they want to know what happens in the story - but please, take out those extra few minutes before or after reading the part to look over the author's note. It's my humble request.

2. People Res. and leave.

I may have to take a leaf out of Rae's book and say "Do not res"
I have been noticing this for the past few weeks, that people res on my story and leave it at that, never commenting.

Let me just get something straight - I find it rude, and I get offended when readers do that. According to me, you were excited to read the part, hence you res'd a spot. And then when you read it, you hated what you read, and hence did not even bother editing your comment because you hated it so much.
If you dislike something - let me know.
If you do not find something to your absolute liking - write that in the comment.
If you like something - let me know.

But heck, do not res and just leave it.
I have been nice about it in the past, but now I am actually gonna start chasing up those readers who res. and leave.

Also, what's the point of res-ing 20 pages after the part? Do readers actually believe that 'res' constitutes for an actual comment?

3. People tell me how my plot should play out

I am all for people throwing suggestions at me, because according to me it shows you care enough about the characters to get worked up and want to see something happen according to you. I am all for people going crazy on my thread, because I do that at times as well.
However, what I not going to tolerate is this:

"Your story is not progressing the way it should. Khushi should have done this, while Arnav should have said that. Then they should have done blah, and together that would have resulted in blah blah. And then this story would have been better"

I am sorry, did I forget you were the writer of this story?

Another thing I would like to highlight.

I am not going to tolerate any kind of advertising on my stories. If you want me to read a story of yours, PM me, and if I have the time I'll check it out. However by you coming on my thread, and posting a link, will not be appreciated at all.

Finally, a special, special and loud shout out to all my readers - especially those who leave the amazing comments that make me feel warm all over, and sometimes cause me to blush like a red tomato!
Another shout out to those who analyse things, try and get to the bottom of the character's actions, and point out mistakes when they see it!
Another shout out to those who stalk my stories! It comes in handy as I hardly PM anymore.
I absolutely adore all the comments on my stories, and it's the feedback received that keeps me going, otherwise I'd have probably quit ages ago.

And a big hug to V for making this thread! Hopefully if the readers are unknowingly making some of these mistakes - they will rectify it, and we will love them even more :)

Thanks!

I'm a reader. That said, I must also say that I haven't read very many Arshi-inspired stories. But the few that I read, I do because I really like them--the story as well as the way it is told. I know that there are other stories that I would enjoy, but I restrict myself to two or three at a time because I cannot do them justice if I'm reading six at a go! So, I pick and choose! I hope to eventually get around to reading the others.

But getting back to the topic...It goes without saying that to be a reader you have to read what is written. But there are as many different kinds of readers as there are writers. Sometimes you read and get what the writer is saying, sometimes you don't. And the reason for not getting what is being put across, or seeing it in a different light, may have to do with a reader's own perspective, their experience, their exposure, or simply their ability to grasp the issue at hand. I know that there are times that I feel I completely get the writer and there are times I'm totally lost. Not because I haven't read what's written. But because I don't have the emotional or experiential wherewithal to understand it at that point. And that's fine with me. If it turns out that I am completely at sea with what's being written, that i cannot relate at all to such an extent that i am learning/gaining nothing from the reading, I do both the writer and myself a favor and stop reading.

I am reader and not a writer. But I do understand what writer is expecting after spending hours on a beautiful story. I have a few points that I hate it when I see other readers doing.

Things I don't like from a reader as a reader:
1. Reserving a post
I just don't understand the need. Why is it important to reserve a post. I can understand if someone does that to be the first to post after the update (that should be updated as soon as they read the update, which would make sense) but other than that what is the point? I have seen post reserved 2-3 pages after the update.

2. Commenting for the sake of doing it
As Aveiro mentioned 'nice', ':D' ,etc, etc. I mean as a reader if I don't have anything special to say, I click on 'like' and move on. It is a story, so there would be 'filler' updates. I am not saying that no one should comment on them; I am just not really good at super analysing all the updates. I am just simple reader, who enjoying reading and would write down what I feel as a comment. If I have things to say I would and if not, I will not force myself into writing a comment. Definitely the writer deserves better than forced comments.

3. Requesting for a scene
I passionately hate this when readers start requesting for an intimate scene or something similar. I guess what is the point if writer just does what you ask for, where would be the surprise element and the writer's point of view.

4. Requesting update
It is not bad to ask for an update, it would make writer feel special but when it is done like the next day after the update and until the writer updates. I feel like we are pressurising the writer to write; so definitely it wouldn't be a leisure activity for them instead a compulsory act. Most of the writers here are doing this for free and they have their life and responsibilities.

5. Commenting on the length of update
If you don't like it, move on. Why disappoint the person who has taken out their time to write an update for us; whether short or long. The reader would understand this only when they sit down to pen down a scene and the importance of ending a chapter before starting a new scene.

Maya (inked), I didn't realise but I came up with 5 points (yash's 5 point theory).. it works.. hehehehe [if you read -khushi- by Maya, you will understand what I am talking about]

There is just one point I want to mention about the writers. I have seen this in some authors here; they reply back to the questions or comments by their forum friends and ignore the ones they don't know. I am not saying this is done by all. But is it fair to do that? I get hurt when I have written a long comment with a question in that too. The writer wouldn't bother to respond to that but would respond to some silly comment by their friend in forum. If the writer chose not to answer anyone's questions, it is understandable.

Every writer here.. be it the ones who are starting to write or the ones who have been writing for quiet some time now look out for comments from their readers which will help them in guaging if what they have written have created the right impact that the writer wanted to create.
writing very short comments like awesome, loved it, great update if equivalent to the like button pressed, and if the reader is commenting on the story, I agree with you, skimming through the update and commenting on it is frustrating... I,as a writer, will start thinking where I have gone wrong in my update that this person has not understood it?
A good thread! will be looking for more sections on this...
