Your Gaze Was My Home
The rain was now bucketing down and Khushi saw the pool begin to overflow, the water lapping up on the sides. She was glad of the rain; it camouflaged her tears that were similarly seeping over the edges of her eyes and spilling on to her face. Her body initially shivering from the cold had now begun to shudder and she wasn't sure she would be able to manage to keep all the pain inside. She cried for what she had done...what she had been forced to do. Life had a dealt a cruel hand.
Khushi managed to drag herself upward and stumble over to the stack of weights that were kept along the far wall. Despite the torrential downpour the breeze was surprisingly gentle as the water drenched her; cloth squelching with every step she took. The weights were stacked on a metal rack that came up to about waist height and she leisurely ran her fingers along their cool hard surfaces before clutching on to the rack as her body gave way.
Hidden from her view, Arnav stood on top of the stairs and watched as she slid to the floor, still clutching on the metal railing, and screamed. Her agony tore through the air and suddenly he was at a loss. There just a few meters from him was the woman who, for all intensive purposes, had killed him. But she was also his wife, his love...his everything.
It was never going to be simple.
There she was crying out in agony for him and all of his plans had suddenly disintegrated. He stood paralysed, unable to propel himself into any sort of meaningful action and so he watched as she determinedly wiped her tears and grabbed a length of metal chain and some of his weights. His chest constricted and he felt the blood in his extremities drain away rapidly.
Arnav knew what she was doing.
He made no move to stop her. Some part of his mind wanted to see if she would go through with it. This was her test he decided. He needed to know if she would do this for him just as she had needed to know that he would do the same for her a week earlier. Arnav watched as Khushi attached the chain to the heaviest weights on the rack and then used the other side of chain to bind her feet together.
Using the length of the chain she dragged the weights with her as she crawled to the side of the pool. Sliding her legs over the edge of the pool she let them dangle there. Looking up to the stars she softly whispered...
"I'll see you soon...all of you"
Khushi slowly slid into the pool and yanked the chain. The weights grated against the terracotta tiles as they slowly inched towards the water. They teetered at the edge until assisted by gravity they dropped in to water and sunk to the bottom taking Khushi to her watery grave.
Arnav watched as she submerged herself, her body resembling a lifeless ragdoll. This entire experience was absurd as he watched detached from the whole scenario. His professional experience took over as began to go through the process; he himself had used this method for several targets.
Arnav knew that she would now be involuntarily holding her breath because no matter how much she wanted this, her body would instinctively fight for survival. Without oxygen she would become unconscious. He looked towards her and sure enough he could see that under the surface of the water her body had become limp.
The rain continued to hammer down and Arnav clinically returned to his thoughts. Her lungs would now be filling with water and in another 3 minutes, with her body oxygen deprived, brain damage would begin to occur. Without oxygen the rest of her organs would soon begin to fail and then eventually her heart would stop...his heart would stop.
Arnav remembered hearing once that "Drowning was like going home..."
It was as if something clicked and he realized that this was no game. She was really dying.

Khushi felt like her body was on fire and she coughed up what seemed like liters of water. There was a sharp stabbing pain in her chest as she gasped; her body starved of air. Her head was pounding and there was a ringing in her ears.
Her eyes still closed she could feel continuous pressure being applied to her chest and a distorted voice desperately pleading..."Come on Khushi...please" After sometime the ringing in her ears began to subside and she was able to open her eyes.
All of a sudden she was lurched forward into a strong embrace and she knew she was home. Khushi weakly managed to lift her arms to hold his shirt as she was crushed into his chest. They sat there, on the terracotta tiles, in each other's embrace as the rain continued to lash down upon them.
A clap of thunder suddenly brought them back to the present moment. Khushi looked up into his eyes...
"I wanted it to be in the Ocean and under the blanket of the stars. Arnav in me, with me and around me but there is no Arnav is Delhi..." her voice barely audible.
Arnav nodded in understanding. Lifting her in his arms he moved toward the bedroom. There would be no questions tonight and that was fine by him. Tonight was simply about them; everything else left behind for this one moment in time. Dawn would come soon...but until then they would be lost in one another.
Are you lost in paradise my love or have you found a home,
It's an awfully lonely road to walk alone,
And as I searched your flashing indigo eyes,
It echoed true, that
I loved you...
That I loved you...
But everyone knew that your gaze was my home
