The earth shook again, along with Khushi's heart.
"Y-you knew?" She stammered.
"Khushi, I'm sorry, I-"
"H-How can you hide that from me?" She sobbed into her hands, her whole body shaking, her was taking in large gulps of air, her cheeks covered in her moist evidence of grief.
Arnav took a step forward, only for her to take several backwards.
"Why would you hide something like that?" She demanded, looking up at him, her voice rising, as did the sobs that accompanied her words.
"Khushi, I-I was scared that you wouldn't be able to handle and I was thinking about the baby and-"
"So you didn't allow me to say goodbye to my father, you jus-st allow-wed him to g-g-go wi-w-ithout letting me say g-g-oodbye." Numbness was taking over her as she closed her eyes, plunging herself into a pit of darkness, her mind was trying to string together the fact that Babu-ji was no more, that she wouldn't see his smiling face again, ever. All because of the man standing in front of her.
She opened her eyes slowly, releasing more tears. Arnav was standing there, beseeching her to forgive him, to try and understand why he hid it from her.
"K-Khushi, please-""I'm going h-h-h-home." Where the funeral will take place, she thought, and with that, she let out another sob at the thought of her Babu-ji snatched away from her. Forever.
"You can't go right now," she heard him quietly say, just audible over her sobs, bringing them to a sudden halt, as stabs of pain arose in her chest.
"W-what?" She asked incredulously.
"T-the roads are blocked, the rain is pouring too much there's been five ac-c-idents."
The roaring suddenly became apparent to Khushi as she heard the harsh meeting of the raindrops to the ground.
It was insignificant, however.
"I don't care,I-I'm going." She made to walk about the room, only for Arnav to stop her; tears were now rolling down his cheeks, not wanting to do this.
"K-Khushi y-you c-can't Amma s-said not to-"
"I don't care!" She screamed again, "I'll walk it if I have to!"
"It's at least two hours walk, and at this state you'll fall ill, Khushi you're pr-"
"So you're going to stop me now are you?" Khushi asked, her tear-filled, yet blazing eyes penetrating through him.
He merely looked down, conveying he would if she forced him to.
"First, you don't tell me my father is going to die, a-and n-n-now y-y-you're not going to let me s-s-ee him?" She hung her head, as betrayal flowed through her system; it was all too much as her knees bashed harshly against the marble floor, crying for her father.
"Khushi-"
Arnav made to hold her when she screamed out, "don't touch me!" Her heart was set on fire as she knew right now she needed him, needed his support, his comfort, but she would deprive herself of that, "l-leave me alone."
"please, please-"
"I hate you," she cried, placing her head in hands as she leaned against the side of the bed, her never-ending sobs sending cold spikes down his back.
*************************************
Arnav moved to the other side of the bed, hating himself. Her weeping was making him feel useless as his hands remained empty, lacking her. He threw back his head, his tears making their way to the duvet of the bed, staining them.
He wanted, needed, nothing more than to comfort Khushi, to tell her everything would be okay, to reassure her that Babu-ji was in a better place now, to take care of her, her and their baby.
But he himself had snatched that away, not telling her that Babu-ji was to depart, not knowing that he would leave so soon. Arnav let out the sob that was building in chest, making Khushi stop her sobs, she turned around, made to get up, only for her to remember what he had done to her. She gazed back at his weeping self, wanting nothing more than to clutch on to him, to reassure him that everything would be okay.
*************************************
The sun rose, the darkness of the sky slowly disappearing yet the golden, shining circle seemed to be unable to shed its light on the hearts that filled with sorrow.
The rain had finally stopped, and as the rays of light entered the room Khushi and Arnav rose their heads from their hands, shutting their eyes immediately as if too much light was not allowed.
Through Arnav's closed eyes he faced Khushi, and when they would allow him he saw that she looked absolutely exhausted. The ends of her normally straight hair was sticking up slightly, there were dark deep circles under her bloodshot still teary eyes.
Those eyes flashed towards him, looked away and then settled on him again. As he stood up, however, she placed them on the door and made to get up as well.
Khushi held a hand to her head as tiny white sparks burst in front of her eyes, making the whole room spin, she staggered, only to be held up by Arnav.
He expected her to pull away, to scream at him, but she let him hold her. "Khushi, are you okay?" She nodded against him. "Khushi, I'm so sorry."
She gazed at him, her eyes glistening with tears.
"I know I should have told, in fact I was going to, but I was worried about you and the baby, and then I had the fear of losing you" he gulped hard, "I know I should have told you, I'm so so so sorry." The image of her sobbing uncontrollably flashed in his mind, and his tears reflected hers. She shook her head slowly and wiped his tears, whilst he did the same to her. She then pressed herself against him, clutching to his shoulders, letting herself cry against him, allowing him to run a hand through her hair, gripping her to him.
"I understand," she croaked.
Arnav led her downstairs and sat her in a dining room chair, aware that she had not eaten for over ten hours. He went to the kitchen to find something warm.
Meanwhile Khushi gazed in front of her, today is the day of my father's funeral. It didn't make sense the words, another tear escaped her eyes. "Babu-ji?" She said aloud, looking around her, expecting a response.
Silence.
The silence dug into her.
He's no more, she thought, she pressed her lips together trying to regain some control, think of the baby, she said to herself, pressing a hand against her stomach, absorbing the strength it gave to her.
"Khushi..." Arnav came with a plate of paratha and a spoonful of jam and butter; he set it in front of her, placing a hand on her cheek. Khushi did not feel like eating, but her mind was read as Arnav said "think about the baby," and so she let him feed her. After two bites she stopped him, he looked at her questioningly, she broke a bit of paratha from the plate and placed it towards his lips, making sure he ate as well.
Well how was that?
