Chapter Twenty Sic
The hospital was still open on the weekends for the patients and the employs who worked were paid double of what they would earn on a regular day.Kripa punched in the numbers on the pad beside her door to open it. That code was only told to one people: Faith, beside Kripa. She trusted her with the hope she wouldn't tell anyone. If anyone found out that one code so much could go wrong in the future. Her cabin held secrets of various projects they were planning.
When the door unlocked she pushed it and they both walked inside. It was hard to convince Faith to allow them to leave, but she agreed by making sure they would go in the same car. So then they had to be together.
Angad sat down on the chair across Kripa's until she got the files. Then instead in sitting on her chair she sat on the one beside Angad. She looked through the files and then when she found the fund-raising one she placed that one in her lap and every thing else on the table.
Angad was playing with anything he found on the desk. "Angad." She took the object from his hand and put it away. "We need to fund-raise about two hundred-thousand dollars in order for our floor to come to life still."
Angad smiled at her. "Well I have perfect ideas."
She made a face at him, "Already? This is supposed to take hours."
"It will sweetheart." He pulled her chair so they both could look at the file. "Look, we need two hundred-thousand dollars and most of this is for the equipment."
"And to pay the workers who are building, and then of course you."
"Forget me," he waved a hand pushing the idea aside. "I'm not that important. I have enough money." He took a deep-breath. "Right now the most important is the workers."
"Right. They will want their salary as soon as the floor in finished, which is when?"
"The week after Christmas, maybe a little earlier."
"Well I want to pay them before that only because they will need the money. We have two weeks until Christmas still. Can we do anything?"
"Yes we can!" He looked at Kripa with a smile. "With Christmas coming most people will be off next week and the week after. Colleges and schools."
"Correct."
"Well next weekend we can hold a Father & Daughter Christmas Ball." He looked at Kripa before continuing. "The tickets will be twenty dollars. We can hold auctions and we can request donations. I'm sure we can collect something."
"A Father & Daughter Ball on Christmas?"
He nodded, "Remember Santiago used to do that." She nodded. "I'm sure it will work out. If not maybe Dad can fund us, like a loan, and then we can pay him back."
"We? Who is we? You're contract ends with me on January first."
He smiled warmly, "I will be around Kripa. I promise."
She frowned at him being so nice to her. "Ok, we can talk to him about that if, if, the Ball Idea doesn't work. But what will we auction?" She messaged her temple as she thought.
"We can ask famous artists to donate painting, contact actors with autographed souvenirs, football player. I'm sure I can pull that one off. I'm sure Sana can help. Stop worrying." She looked up instantly; He pulled her hand down from her head and pulled her chair closer. "Stop worrying. I hate it." There was surprise in her eyes, he was so hers. Always there for her in good and bad times. She took her hand back from him and moved back in her chair.
"Ok. Let's get a list of people who can help with this. I know Karan will help us with the actor's idea."
"I can do the footballs. Most of the people who used to play on the USC Football team went to NFL, and I'm sure I can find students that went to Santiago to help me."
"Faith can get guys from Berkley who has moved on to NFL as well. She's always good with them." She sighed at the thought.
"And the paintings?"
"Umā¦" He watched her swing her chair around and enjoy the ride. She rolled a few times and then stopped. "I guess I'll have to call them, or visit famous art galleries."
"Orā¦"
"Or?" she raised a brow and looked at him. "Or Angad?"
"We can make the painting and auction them."
"And you're going to paint them, right?"
"No, we are. You paint, and draw. You're great at it."
"No Angad." She shook her head. "I haven't touched colors and a paint brush in years how can I paint so many and that to for auction?"
"Trust me."
"Trust you," she scoffed. "You'll be sleeping while I'll be working."
"I will not!" he replied defensively. "See you wouldn't have been so far ahead in the planning if it wasn't for me."
"Shut-up Angad." She rose form her chair and walked to the coffee maker. "We can give it a try. Mimic famous artists."
"Yup!" He stood up and walked behind her. "And you can sing them, I'm sure there will be lots of people who would love to own something singed by you."
She turned her head slightly to find him so close to her.
"I need to confess Kripa." He rested his arms on her shoulders and took another step closer to her.
She looked back at the coffee maker. "To me?"
"To you and to myself."
"You can do at the church." He didn't speak. "Would you like a cup?"
"Yes, thank you." He backed away from her and went back to the chair. Kripa let out a breath of relief after he was gone.
They worked till six, when the sun was finally starting to set they decided to finish the rest tomorrow. They would talk to Dev tonight itself as well as Faith and Sana. Karan, they both knew could pull it off without a problem, specially with the female actors. He had a charm most people didn't know about.
After finishing their work they went to grab something to eat, which ended up being In n' Out.
"I haven't had In n' Out since I left New York." Angad said smelling the fries.
Kripa laughed at him. "Well I haven't had In n' Out in god knows how many years."
"Why not?" He pressed his foot on the accelerator and turned out on the street into the freeway.
"Faith hates In n' Out, Karan barely ever eats out, and I no one ever asked until you today." She shrugged picking up a few fries. "Are you excited about your job with K.B. Homes?"
"Very. Which exit do we take for the church?"
"Ninth." He changed lanes and then reached for the fries in Kripa's lap, and then pulled his hand back. Kripa laughed. "They are hot."
"Yeah, thanks for telling me now."
She picked one up and fed him. "You're still a kid Angad. Poor Amna." She sighed. "Thank god she saved me."
He took an exit on ninth and then followed Kripa's instructions to the church. When they parked they ate in the car and then got out and walked towards the church.
Angad was amazed at how many people were sitting there. There was a huge church and then an entire grass area, maybe as big as Kripa's entire apartment.
"Let's go there." Kripa took his hand and pulled him to the small bridge built on the other side from where the choir was singing. When they sat down on the bended tree trunk Kripa turned to him and asked. "What did you need to confess?"
He looked at her amazed she still remembered. "You really want to know?"
"Yes." She nodded "Angad Khanna for as long as I've known you I've never heard the word confess from you." She adjusted herself on the bended trunk of the tree and looked back at him. Again, the way he looked at her made something inside her sigh, jump, and told her he might just be the guy.
"Come with me." He took her hand and they got off the trunk. Holding her hand they walked into the empty church. It was lighted with candles only. It smelled like fresh pines, like Christmas. They both stopped in front of the large statue of Jesus hung on the other side. Kripa watched him bend, and did the same.
Angad touched his head to his chest and then the sides of both his shoulders. They both folded their hands at the same time, and closed their eyes.
For a seconds they could hear the faint voices of the Choir singing from outside. Then he spoke.
"I don't know how to confess, forgive me if I do anything wrong." He paused and felt Kripa's eyes on him.
Yes, she couldn't help but look at him with his hands folded and eyes closed.
"I think god," his heart was beating against his chest. Kripa looked away and closed her eyes at that moment. "I think I'm falling in love with Kripa Kapoor." Her eyes opened and she looked at him.
"Angad." She had instant tears in her eyes.
"I don't know if it's love or just sympathy but every time I see her cry everything in me hurts. Every tear that fall from her eye is like a precious pearl. Am I in love or is it just how I would feel about a friend? Am I making a mistake by marrying Amna when I'm confused?" He opened his eyes and turned his head to look at Kripa. "Tell me⦠Kripa."
"You answered your question yourself Angad." She stood up and turned. "You think you are in love with me. You just think that because we've been spending so much time together. You're in love with Amna, you have been. Not me."
He walked behind her, and at the door of the church he held her hand. From the door the voices of choir was beautiful and clear.
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
He skimmed his lips on her cheek and then pressed him against her lips.
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
