- Khushi, tumne hi Asha ko bigara hai. Dekho, bilkul tumhari taran, mere baat hi nahi sunti hai. Kab se mein usko apne pass bula raha hoon lekin apne pita ke pass hi nahi aa rahi hai. ( Khushi, you've spoilt Asha. Look, she's acting exactly like you. Just like you, she never listens to me. I've been calling her to come to me for ages now but no, she's completely ignoring her father.)
Khushi, who had been pouring tea for the family, stopped and looked up at the smiling face of her accuser. And smiled in return. Then she adopted a mock frowning expression and returned to filling up the cups in front of her.
- Maaf karna Sir, she used the much-hated term of endearment, laiken mein ne kissi ko nahi bigara. (Sorry Sir, but I haven't spoiled anyone.) And first of all, I only don't listen to you when you don't make sense. And anyways, you already boss people around too much. Someone saying no to you once in a while is actually good for your health, she continued as she looked up, smiling mischievously, at her accuser.
At the sound of muffled giggling, she turned her head to the right and focused her attention on the supposedly spoiled little girl in question- Asha- who was giggling uncontrollably even as her mouth was filled with chocolate biscuits. And Khushi's smile grew even wider while the mischievous glint in her eye turned to one of affection and love.
And then her eyes moved to the two men who sat on either side of her and who were also trying to hide their smiles but were failing miserably.
- And anyways, sir, even if she is spoiled, and I'm not saying that she is, yeh do bhai jo hai na aapke, inki hi galti hai (then it is the fault of these two brothers of yours) - she turned her fake accusing look to the two men - Javeed and Raj- who instead of bowing their heads down in shame grinned even more widely at her as they accepted their cup of tea from her hands.
As she continued handing out the teacups, Khushi looked at the family surrounding her and once again thanked Devi Maya for her blessings everyday: she smiled as she saw dadi explaining something very secretively to her soon to be new daughter-in-law Simran whilst her grandson and soon to be the hubby of said Simran, Raj, stared lovingly at his future bride. Her eyes moved on to the aforementioned accuser, Rahul Kapoor, a.k.a. Sir, who was once again trying to convince his ladli Asha to come sit with him. And then her attention moved once again to the 4 and a half-year old girl who was resolutely refusing to acknowledge her father and was instead giving her full attention to her youngest chacha, Javeed.
In one thing Sir was right, she thought happily, Asha was becoming like her day by day. But then, even as the thought crossed her mind, her heart constricted painfully and she closed her eyes and prayed fervently to DM that her Asha would not have to go through the trials and pain that had been her fate. She prayed that there would always be happiness in Asha's life or that even if there were hardships that her Asha would never lose hope and would fight on.
As she opened her eyes again and saw the happy faces around her, she thought that DM must have taken pity on her once again or that she must have done something really noble in another lifetime for her to be blessed with such a family and such a home once again She acknowledged that despite her hardships in life, she really was blessed. Her mother and father had loved her so much before they had passed away. Her bauji and amma, her Jji and buaji had given her even more love. She had also received love from another family, a family she had been allowed to become a member of for a short spam of time. But those memories were too painful for her to dwell on, even now, even after all this time.

Rahul turned his attention from his daughter to look at the woman who was the reason for so much joy, so much khushi, in his life and smiled sadly as he saw her lost in her world. He noticed how her eyes, which had held mischief and laughter a couple of minutes ago, had become distant and unfocused. And he knew for certain that she was lost once again in her past.
- Khushi ji, Rahul called her, eager for her to return to the joy of their present, away from the sorrows of her past, aap humari baat sun bhi rahi hain. You see I was right, you don't listen to me, he huffed.
Khushi snapped back to her reality.
- Maaf karna Rahul ji, Khushi said as she smiled apologetically at Rahul, knowing that he had figured out the direction of her thoughts. The man could read her like a book, she thought. Then turning her attention once again towards the problem at hand, she slowly kept her teacup on the edge of the table and gestured with her finger towards Asha - Idher aao Asha (Come here Asha).
Rahul watched as his daughter gingerly got down from the sofa and obediently walked towards her most favoured person in the world.
- Asha, why aren't you listening to your father?
Rahul watched as a look passed between the two.
- Kya aap apne papa se naraz hain? (By chance, are you mad at your papa?)
Asha slowly nodded her head. And at the silent enquiry from her mother, Asha exploded.
- Choti maa, Papa promised that he would play cricket with Shahid bhaiya and me. But he never did, she huffed indignantly. And I know that bhaiyya didn't say anything, but he was sad. Papa made bhaiya sad. And I don't like him for it; she finished as she glared accusingly at him.
------------
Khushi couldn't help but smile at the display of love and care from the little sister for her older brother. It reminded her of another beautiful brother-sister bond she had witnessed in what seemed like another lifetime.
- Waise Shahid hai kahan? (By the way, where is Shahid) Shouldn't he be back from school by now Khushi betiya? asked dadi.
- He had to go to a friend's house to complete his school project. I got a call from the driver when we were at the mandir. He dropped him off safely. We'll go pick him up when he's done dadi. Khushi heard Rahul answer the matriarch.
- Asha, you know that your papa is a big doctor right? And that he has to take care of lots and lots of patients. So sometimes, he has to break little promises in order to fulfill bigger promises such as saving his patients life. But that doesn't mean that he doesn't love you. And I'm sure that your papa will do whatever he can to make up for making Shahid sad, Khushi finished as she gave Rahul a apologize-to-your daughter-right-now look.
-------------
To which Rahul complied immediately.
- Sorry beta. Next time I promise I'll take a whole day of and play cricket with you and Shahid. Maaf kar do na please apne pyaare papa ko. (Please forgive your dad!)
He watched, fascinated, as Asha turned to look at her mother who nodded slightly; That was all the confirmation his daughter needed before she ran into his arms laughing, apologising and making declarations of how he was the best papa in the world.
- Aur Asha, ek meri baat suno. (And Asha, listen to me). When you are hurting or angry, you should never keep quiet about it. You should always talk to the person to explain to them why and how they have hurt you or angered you. If you let these feelings fester in your heart, they become so huge that only misunderstandings and more hurt can result from them for everyone involved. Saamji?
Asha nodded her little head, her face furrowed in concentration, trying with all of her 4 and half-year-old mind to fully understand what her chotti ma was trying to tell her. Rahul knew that if there was one person she hated to disappoint, it was her Khushi ma.
- Acha. So if everyone is one with his or her tea, I'll just take everything to the kitchen then.
Rahul watched as Khushi quietly picked up everything and headed towards the kitchen, refusing the help from the gazillion servants they employed. He sighed.
He still remembered the broken girl he had met 5 years ago. And despite what she had made everyone around her believe, he wasn't duped; the image of the contented woman she portrayed was only a smoke screen. He knew that the hurt girl was still in there but Khushi never let anyone see her. Maybe it was because when she had come into his family, she had realised that they didn't need another tearful member. Hence she had pushed her sorrow away and done what she did best, she had laughed herself into their lives, and awakening them from the abysmal slumber they had fallen into.
