Chapter 23:
As he opened the door and entered he saw Khushi fast asleep with a tear- streaked Anjali sitting beside her clutching her hand as she slept. Hearing the door open and close Anjali looked up. 'Chotey' she said as she rushed up to him and pulled him into a motherly embrace. 'Chotey' repeated Anjali as she hugged her brother tightly to her bosom. 'Oh God what have you done to yourself Chotey?' asked Anjali. Arnav could not say anything just clung to his sister tighter not being able to believe that she was actually here. After reveling in each other's presence and hugging each other to their hearts content Arnav took Anjali to sit on the sofa that he had gotten one of the nurses to order in for himself a few hours ago.
'Di. What happened? I thought… I thought that… I thought you were dead' said Arnav not being able to bring himself to say it properly. 'I don't know what happened Chotey to make you think that I was dead but I need to tell you something…' and with that Anjali began to tell Arnav the whole truth, the real truth about what had happened that night. Once Anjali finished telling Arnav the real truth he had to tell Anjali the truth about what had happened between him and Khushi. He knew if he did not tell her the truth then and there he would never be able to tell her the truth. By the time Arnav was done telling Anjali everything that had happened she was sobbing uncontrollably. 'Chotey I cannot believe you did that to that poor soul. How could you? Even if she had done that to me only I had a right to punish to her not you! Do you even have any idea what that girl has been through in life? She had such high hopes of falling in love and marriage and her husband. It was all that was keeping her going. She would sit there telling me her husband would be like this and this and this. Most girls had wanted a guy who was rich or famous or something typical like that. But Khushi she always was a rarity. Khushi never wanted any of those things. She just wanted a guy who would love her. And in return for love she was willing to give up anything and everything for him Chotey. I lost my baby too. I know how much it hurts. In a way I am happy that she has lost her memory Chotey it means she can start anew' said Anjali. 'What are you saying Di?' How can you even think I could let her go?' said Arnav. 'I can say it because I care about her Chotey. The doctor came to see me after you had left. He examined her and told me that she has partial amnesia. She does not remember anything until just before our university party. She does not remember you at all Chotey. And if you try to forcefully make her remember you then she can get a brain hemorrhage and die Chotey. Do you want that for her? Her love was pure it. Her love was real. That is why her love had the ability to change you. But your love was not pure. It was selfish. That's why she did not remember it. That's why she does not remember you Chotey. Please if you loved her even the slightest bit then let her go. Let her find the love that she deserves. Please Chotey? Look what that girl has done for you. She has given you back your sister. The one person you thought she had taken from you was returned to you by her. So if not for anything as gratitude for that fact please let her go?' pleaded Anjali.
(Stop here!!! Listen to this as you read the next part)
'Di you said it so easily. Let her go. I can physically let her go. But, what about my heart? How do I tell it to let her go? How? Di this is the first time I have loved someone as much as I love you and Ma. Di do you even have an inkling of how much that girl loves me? You have not seen it with your eyes but I have. And each and every time I pushed her away. I pushed her away persuading my mind that it was just a ploy by her to get in my good books. She was pregnant Di. I remember her running to tell me that she was having our baby. But I pushed her away and I left her. I left her Di. Why did I leave her? Why Di? Why could my hearts voice not just tell me that it was right and my brain was wrong? Why? I can't leave her now. Every breath I take now has her name on it. I want to give her what she deserved all along Di. I want to shower her with all the love in the world. I want her to be the mother of my children. Di that is the only hope that is keeping me going. Take that away from me and I am a living shell which exists, soulless. It is a good thing that she has lost her memory. It's a second chance Di. Second chances come rarely in life. And do you know why I got my second chance I got it because of her. More than herself she has prayed for me. She has prayed for my happiness. God listened to her. He listened to her prayers and has given me a second chance. I won't run away this time. I don't care what the Gupta and Raizada party say this time. I'll marry in the right way and get everyone to accept us. Di I don't care that she is Muslim and I am Hindu I don't care about any of that Di. I just want to feel complete again. I want that hole in my heart to be filled' said Arnav as he curled up on his sister's lap and cried himself to sleep uttering Khushi's name repeatedly.
Khushi looked stunning in an all -white kameez with a light silver border. She looked like a really angel. She was looking for someone. He could see her scanning the area. A few seconds more and her eyes clapped on his. Both pairs of eyes clashing. A silent declaration of love without words. Arnav did not miss the way her eyes lit up as she found him at the other end of the crowd. Slowly he watched her walk in his direction her strides getting faster and faster more and more urgent until she eventually broke into a sprint running towards him and then throwing herself at him and clinging to him tightly as if he was a dream that would disappear any second soon. Just as he was about to put his arms around her and hug her back she was gone.
'Khushiii!!!!' screamed Arnav as he jolted into an upright sitting position. Getting his bearing straight he saw that he was on the sofa and his Di was sitting beside Khushi near the bed feeding her. At the mention of her name Khushi had looked up to see a frantic Arnav looking around wildly before he set his eyes on her and she could literally see him relax in front of her very eyes. For a second their eyes locked on each other's. Khushi could see vulnerability in his eyes. She did not know why but she felt like she knew him. But how would she know him? She had never seen him in her life before. His eye lock with hers was beginning to frighten her a little bit and so to break out of the eye lock she turned to Anjali and said 'Anjali who is that man?'
Hearing Khushi call him that man just broke him that little bit more. He was just a man to her now. A stranger? Would that be all he would ever be to her now? Never anything else? Everything all over just like that. Arnav could physically feel his heart break a little bit more just then. But he vowed to himself then and there that he would bring her back. He would bring his Khushi back. He would make her fall in love with him once more. Though she could not remember him he Arnav was sure that she could hear the silent tears and the pleas of his heart. He was not afraid anymore. His aim was clear now. His path to his destination was no longer lost. His aim was crystal now. His destination sat in front of his eyes on a bed with no recollection of him.
As he looked up at Anjali he heard Anjali say to Khushi 'That's my brother Khushi. He was the one that brought you here. You had a terrible accident and Chotey found you'. As Arnav heard her say that he walked slowly up to her. 'Hi, I am Arnav' he said as he put his hand out for a handshake.
Khushi stared at the figure in front of her 'Arnav' she said. As the name left her lips she could not help but realise that that name came with such ease out of her mouth as if she had said it so many times before. 'Thank you for saving me' she said as she took his hand in a shake. As their hands met she could not help but feel the shot of electricity that jolted through her. The impact of which could be felt all the way in her heart. Truth be spoken Khushi had felt a wave of familiarity the second she had opened her eyes and seen him. But the feeling had been so intense, so strong that it had scared her. She did not know what that feeling was but the intensity of it had scared her causing her to lash out at Arnav. And here again she felt the same familiarity overcome her once more resulting in her pulling her hand out of his grip quickly. 'It is no problem I am sure you would have done the same if you had been in my place' said Arnav as he turned back and made his way back to the sofa.
He sat and watched Anjali feed Khushi discreetly. After she finished Anjali sat with Khushi until she had fallen asleep. After knowing for certain that Khushi was asleep did Arnav approach them again. 'Di' he said gently so as not to wake Khushi. 'Why don't you go home and change and freshen up and come back? Till then I will be here. I am sure she will not wake up for another couple of hours' said Arnav not being able to say her name. 'Are you sure Chotey' said Anjali. 'Yes I am Di. And make sure you go to this address' said Arnav as he handed her over his car keys and a card with his address on it. Anjali wanted to ask him why he wanted her to go there and not home. But when she looked up at him she decided against it. It could wait. There were obviously things that Chotey wanted to say to Khushi that he could not with her present. So without saying a word Anjali left the two alone.
After Arnav heard the click of the door closing did he move towards Khushi bed and sit down on the chair beside it. Holding her hand in his he finally let out the tears that were all for her. 'Sorry, sorry, sorry. How many times do I have to say sorry to make all this right? How many times do I have to say it to make the pain go away for both you and me? Khushi I love you. Your faith and your love for me won Khushi it won. How dare you not be there to remember it? How dare you? You promised me you would always be there for me. You vowed to never leave me. So then what is this? You lied. Make your brain remember me damn it! Your heart remembers me I felt it when you shook my hand! Come back Khushi don't leave me. You always said that when two people love each other then their hearts are attuned to one another as well as the emotions in it. Khushi please hear my heart. Please hear the silent pleas of my heart please? Regardless of whether the rest of the word can feel my heart crying or not I know you can feel it. Khushi I know you can feel it and you know why I am crying. You are the only one that can heal my heart and stop my tears. Please come back to me Khushi please? I'll do anything. I am desperate here Khushi the pain is not letting me breathe. Please?' cried Arnav as he begged a sleeping Khushi to come back to him. He knew she could not hear his pleas but the hope in his heart could not stop him from trying. He had tried once today and he would try again tomorrow and the next and the next for as long as it took to get her back. And that was the last thought in his head as he clutched onto her hands resting his head at the edge of her bed drifting off to an un-peaceful state of slumber.
