they still had the stash of it from the time of their grandmother who had insisted on using it until her death and had never switched over to toothpaste.

That reminds me of my grandparents (maternal and paternal). They never shifted to toothpaste. But they did change to tooth powder, initially without the toothbrush and then tooth powder with a brush

Looks like the veena effect has worn off :D

Am not sure what umikiri is... but she should have definitely tried tobacco powder. Ones not used to it actually almost faint cuz of a spinning head ;)
