Chapter - 20
(SAJAN)
When Gunjan felt she seemed decent enough, she gathered some courage, and came out of the washroom. Immediately Shashi's and Uday's eyes flew to her, and the room went silent. Her gaze passed from the two of them, and rested on Samrat, who looked at her with seriousness in his eyes. Her heartbeat caught rapid pace, when Shashi broke the silence.
"Gunjan Beta, kya hua? Aisa lag raha hai jaise aapne bhoot dekh liya ho? I know ki aapke Bhai kisi bhoot se kam nahi hain, lekin unhe to aap har roz dekhti hain. You should get used to him by now", he mocked.
Gunjan let out the breath she'd caught, as she saw Shashi smile and Uday shrug.
"Dad! Don't you have anything to do, other than behaving childlike the whole day?", he asked, and Shashi chuckled to irritate him even more. Gunjan took this time to look glance at Samrat from the corner of her eye, and saw him wink at her. She glared at him while he just grinned.
"Sir, uh i mean Uncle, now that i am feeling better, i was thinking that maybe Gunjan could help me out with what has been happening in the college. I've away quite some time", he said in an innocent tone, and without even looking at her, he knew Gunjan's eyeballs were popping out of her eyes right now.
"Hmm.. I guess that won't be a problem. You both could go to Gunjan's room and study...", Shashi was still speaking, when Gunjan's face held a horrified expression, and somehow, Uday seemed to have noticed it.
"Samrat, aren't you guys in different year? Then how do expect Kiddo to help you?", he asked, and looked at Gunjan, who now definitely had a reason to be horrified. Samrat's face had lost the colour for a few seconds, but he managed to make a comeback easily.
"Actually, Gunjan works with me on the college newspaper. I'm pretty out of touch since the last issue, and Principal sir had called up as he wanted something educational this time. So i thought i could discuss this with Gunjan now that i do have time", he ended the smooth lie with the magic words being 'Principal sir'.
"But...", Uday stopped speaking, as Gunjan cut him.
"We can discuss that tomorrow. We have just a half day, as the teachers have been called up for some meeting. I'll meet you with some ideas right after the last lecture", she said in a straight forward tone, that surprised Samrat.
"I guess that's good with me", he said, and that was when Shashi engaged him into business conversation. Meanwhile Gunjan exited the room, closely followed by Uday. They both went and silently sat on the steps that lead to the garden.
"Kiddo! Kahin Samrat tujhe tang..."
"Nahi Bhai, aisa kuch nahi hai", she replied softly. She knew Uday had seen her expressions, and she was expecting this question sooner or later.
"To phir woh andar...", he again left his words incomplete.
"Bhai, actually Samrat aur mere beech college ke pehle din se hie kuch na kuch misunderstanding hui hai. Woh sab humne recently clear up ki hai, and we've become friends now. But despite that, I've always had this image of him, jise mind se jaane mein thoda time lagega. Bas, isiliye..."
"Was it something i should be worried about?"
Gunjan let out a chuckle at this, and Uday gave her 'what' expression.
"Always my protective Bhai", she showed him a tongue, "Nahii Bhai, kuch serious nahi hai. Just slight competition in academics, and other things, thats it. Agar kuch serious hota, to main uski behen ki 'best friend' thoda hoti", she said in an amused voice.
"Suhaani? I swear Kiddo, it is so difficult to believe ki wo dono bhai behen hain. I mean just somehow, they are too different...", he smiled.
"I know Bhai, i just know", Gunjan couldn't but smile in response.
They sat there talking for a while, and by the time they went inside, Samrat had already left.

It was after dinner, that Gunjan first saw her cell flashing Samrat's name. A smile formed on her lips as she recalled how she'd confessed his love to her, and the whole scene played in her mind. The cell cut her chain of thoughts, but something in her stopped her from taking the call. She picked up the phone in her hand and caressed the alphabets of his name on the screen, and the lights on the phone went off. It now displayed one missed call, but the phone buzzed again as it registered another call from him. It also went off now displaying 2 missed calls. The same continued throughout. Gunjan's cell phone buzzed the whole night, as she lay on the bed caressing the phone. By late night, the phone calls became infrequent, but they continued nevertheless. When the number of calls per hour decreased, Gunjan finally slept off.
***************
A sudden light hit her eye, disturbing Gunjan's sleep. She rubbed her eyes, and searched for her source of irritation, and found her phone buzzing with light, indicating a few missed calls. She scrolled through her phone, and saw that she had 95 missed calls, and all from the same person - Samrat. She felt a chill air pass through her, as she tried imagining his mood right now, after so many missed calls. She dreaded going to college, but she also had certain facts clear. He had only called her again and again. Knowing him, she could've expected him to come rushing to her house at the middle of the night, but he'd done nothing of that sort. He'd only tried to reach her, throughout the whole night, paining himself. Throwing herself immediately off the bed, she got ready and skipping her breakfast, rushed to the college by an auto, praying to God that Uday didn't realize of her act.
Gunjan entered the college gates, and saw her friends gathered at their usual place. She took long steps towards them, and said quick hi's and hello's. They all started rambling non-sense, as her eyes searched the place for that one person.
"Guys! Tumne Samrat ko kahin dekha hai kya?", she asked.
"Aaj college mein koi bhi classes nahi lagengi, not even the half day thingy. Ye sunte hie he went towards the peechhe wala garden, i guess", even before Sumit had completed his words, Gunjan rushed in the direction that he had pointed.
The college was surrounded on all sides by the garden, and it was the front most garden, where they all usually gathered. The backside of the college was very rarely used, and Gunjan walked even more furiously, such that when she reached the garden, she held the gate for support, and huffed until her breathing became normal. She raised her head, and the sight that greeted her eyes, wrenched something in her heart. There was a small pond, and Samrat sat on one of the big boulders that lay there right next to the pond, throwing pebbles with a harshness, that the water managed to wetten him whenever it splashed. He was at a distance, but sat directly facing her. She zoomed her view to his face, saw his jaw clenched, and frown lines formed upon his forehead. She started moving towards him, and as if he'd sensed her, he stopped his hand midway, about to throw another pebble. She stopped walking immediately, as his eyes were fixed on the water. He didn't bother looking up, and threw the pebble, and smiling to herself, she went and sat with him. He was about to throw another pebble, when he thought of something, and threw the pebble on the ground so that a dust bubble formed and disappeared there.
"Paani mujhe kha nahi jayega Samrat", she said in an amused tone, as she realized that he didn't want to make her wet. His expressions didn't change, as he picked up another pebble, and threw it at the pond in such a direction and manner, that the water splashed, but only on him, and soaked him to a high extent. Gunjan didn't move a single inch. Samrat's face now carried no expressions.
"Samrat", she called him softly, but he didn't react in any way. She brought her hand on his that rested near her, but he still didn't do anything. Placing her hands on his face, she turned him to look at her. His eyes were closed, and this irked her a little. Water droplets fell from his wet hair, and made way through his face. Taking her dupatta in her hand, she set to wipe his face ever so delicately, as if she might hurt him. She continued her task, as her fingers brushed his face along with the soft transparent fabric. While wiping his forehead, the dupatta acted as a curtain between their eyes, and Samrat opened his eyes. She let out a gasp, as she saw his eyes bloodshot red, and puffed up. That one moment told her how much pain he'd bubbled up inside him, and if she didn't do something soon, he would hurt himself even more.
"Samrat", she said, panic audible in her tone, as the fabric slipped from her hand, and she cupped his face in her hands. As if all dams had been let loose, a gush of water streamed through Samrat's eyes, and Gunjan felt her heart twist into several knots at once.
"Samrat! Samrat please don't cry. It's hurting me Samrat, please please don't cry", saying this, she brought his face close to her, and started kissing his eyes, and then his cheeks, and his forehead. Her sudden kisses threw away the last piece of control that held him, and clutching her head using her hair, he crushed her lips under his.
There were no inhibitions, as Gunjan immediately responded to his touch. She kissed him with a fierceness that he had never felt before. Everytime he kissed her, he felt a different experience. He sucked her upper lip, biting her lower lip, urging her to open up. She felt his desire, and opened her mouth to let him enter and explore her. He hugged her tightly, and wanted to bring her closer to him, but somehow, the way they sat next to each other, it became difficult for him. Not breaking the kiss, he gently pushed her on the grass below, and lied next to her, such that the boulders and rocks hid them from the view. Grabbing her lower body, he pulled her closer to himself, and entwined his legs with hers. They could feel the heat build up around them. Her hands clenched his hair, forcing his face closer to her. When they couldn't breathe any longer, he left her lips, but immediately dived to her neck, and that was when he chanced a look at her clothes. She was dressed up like the day she was, when they had gone to St Stephens. A not very deep necked, strapped blouse in dark purple colour, that covered her chest just so much as to leave her midriff exposing, with a transparent net kurti, that was buttoned till her navel, and then cut open at front till her knees. She'd paired it with a lighter blue jeans, and the dupatta had also been an addition. To Samrat, this dress was all he could've asked for, giving him easy access to her bare skin. Putting his hands through the netted kurti, and encircling her waist, he moved the kurti on her shoulders a little, letting his tongue create havoc there. He heard her moan, and felt himself going wild with passion. She clutched his hands into hers, which he bound at her back, with his own. He clenched his teeth into her skin, on her shoulder, and felt her dig her nails in his hand as she bore the pain, when he licked the spot he'd bit. Gunjan moaned and wriggled under him, causing him to be aware of her close intimacy with her. Hearing her make such sounds gave rise to another temptation in him. He let go of her hands, that immediately worked their way to his chest. Her fingers strummed his chest, feeling the hard muscles of his body, while she planted kisses in the crook of his neck. Samrat groaned in need of more, when he rubbed her back. His finger worked up her back, and found the back of her blouse. His fingers struggled a bit, but finally he managed what he'd been trying, and opened one of the hooks, among the several ones.
"Samrat"
He immediately felt her body stiffen, and sensed her withdrawal. He brought his head back, to look at her, and saw that she had closed her eyes. Placing his hands on her cheek, he asked her,
"Gunjan, open your eyes, kya hua?"
She didn't speak for a few seconds, and that got him worried.
"I... I can't Samrat, I just can't...", she didn't speak the words, but Samrat understood what she'd been trying to say. Placing his hands again at her back, he felt her tremble, and cursed himself. But she loosened up when she felt his finger close that hook. He got up and sitting straight, grabbed the dupatta that lay at a distance, since it had been thrown away right from the beginning. He straightened himself, and ran a hand in his hair to smoothen them. Then giving her his hand, he helped her get up. Her eyes were lowered, and she got up without looking at him, as she straightened her hair, and her dress.
"I am...", Samrat started speaking, but she stopped him, by placing her hand on his mouth.
"Nahi, tumhe sorry bolne ki koi zarurat nai hai", she removed her hand.
"Par galti meri hai, i know, infact am sure that you are uncomfortable, by this sudden... sudden physical intimacy. But, I... I just can't help it. Trust me Gunjan, you arouse the deepest of my desires, and you are the only one who has managed to make me fall so badly for you. I loose my senses the moment i see you, and these, these skimpy dresses of yours do nothing but make it worse. There's this urgent need, to make you mine, to claim you. I know i might be scaring you, but i swear, it's not just lust for me. Its love, true love for me, i want nobody but you, because i love you so much Gunjan", he had turned his back to her, as he spoke, and felt her arms wrap him from behind as he finished. In her hold itself, he turned, and hugged her close to his heart, as her head rested on his shoulder.
"Tumne kal raat meri call kyun nahi li", he asked, and she raised her head to look into his eyes. She looked into them for a few seconds, but then again rested her head.
"Yahaan maine apna dil tumhare saamne nikaal ke rakh dia, aur tum mere itne se sawal ka jawaab nahi de sakti", he said in a mocking tone, and felt her grip tighten around him. Something was definitely bothering her.
"Its ok Gunjan, tum nahi batana chahti to mat batao. Main toh sirf mazaak kar raha tha", he rubbed her back, when she broke the hug. She said nothing, but held his hand, and led him to sit on a bench. When both of them sat down, she slipped her hand in her bag, and took out a bunch of wrapped up sandwiches. Samrat saw her silently, but the sight of sandwiches made him realize how hungry he was, as a growl escaped his stomach. She broke a bite of the sandwich, and put it in front of his mouth. He looked at her as she nodded slightly, and opened his mouth. He closed his mouth, and she pulled back her hand with a sudden jerk, as his lips touched her fingers. His face fell at this, but he tried acting normal. Then she took out a cup and removed its lid, and gave it to him. He saw the coffee floating with foam, and drank a sip, as he savoured it, to let the cold liquid calm him.
