Part 5 SAGAI 2 Two Rings and One Heart

"Really?", Anjali teased. "You want to TALK?"

"Unbelievable!", added Nani, not to be outdone.

"How long will this TALK take, Chotey?", asked Anjali.

The whole family burst out laughing.

"Di...!", Arnav muttered furiously, red, unused to being teased.

"Achha! So much akkad! Then we are not going to let Khushiji come to your room. She has a lot to do here", smirked the brother's sister.

"When the jeweller comes, please send him to my room with the rings. You can look at the rest of the ornaments down here.", Arnav made a last ditch attempt to get his wife alone.

"Let's thinkwaa about it...if it iz safe to send her to the bedroom of the maan she iz going to marry. Woh Bhi bifaar marriajje.", Mami got into action.

Arnav rolled his eyes as he climbed the remaining steps to his room. What had happened to his family? So much teasing, laughter, conversation, sharing...so this was what family was all about. Not just shouldering the burden. It also meant sharing the load and accepting support & help. This change was all because of Khushi. His desire to make her happy had spread joy in the hearts of his loved ones. Funny thing, family, he mused with a slight smile.

He heard the doorbell ring, and soon Khushi came to the bedroom leading Motilalji.

"We will look at the rings and make our selection. I will let you know once we have decided.", Arnav made his wishes clear.

Motilalji displayed the rings, and left the lovebirds alone. As the door closed behind him, Arnav caught hold of Khushi's arm and pulled her to sit by him on the bed.

"Look at the rings, Khushi. Is there any design that you like?", Arnav asked softly.

Khushi looked at the vast collection of very expensive rings spread out in front of her. The memory of a moment flashed through her mind. Lavanyaji selecting ornaments for her sagai with Arnavji...Khushi being asked to select a necklace of her choice...Khushi looking longingly at one...Arnav selecting it...and putting it around the neck of Lavanyaji...The pain she had felt at that moment had been terrible enough to tear a hole in her heart. She had been surprised that she hadn't bled to death at the look in Arnavji's eyes.

She felt her eyes hurt at her attempt to contain her tears, her throat choke, her chest contract, making it difficult for her to draw breath.

"You choose...", she croaked, keeping her eyes firmly fixed on the rings.

Arnav looked at her bent head for a moment, and then placed his hand beneath her chin to lift her head. He looked deep into her tear-filled eyes, and saw in his mind the scene of him helping Lavanya to put on the necklace that Khushi had liked.

The pain in her eyes had given him a lot of pleasure. He had wanted to make her admit that she cared for him, even though he himself had not realised how much he had cared for her, loved her. He had wanted to hurt her as he had been hurting, the thought of her being engaged to someone else eating into his guts like acid, the sight of her engagement ring killing him. But after the initial euphoria that he had managed to make an impact on her, he had felt pain...her pain...Would his sins against this slip of a girl never end?

Arnav slid down to the floor, and on his knees, buried his face in her lap.

"I am so sorry, Khushi...so sorry...I don't intend to do hurtful things...or say something to hurt you...but I keep on doing it...I don't know why...I am so sorry, Khushi..." He sat apologising for long moments, till Khushi could bear it no longer.

"Ssshhh" She helped him to his feet, and pulled him by his arm to sit by her.

"So, which ring should I choose? After all, I don't intend getting engaged again..", she said, determined to be cheerful.

He sat by her, his eyes red, wet...his hands clenched. She held him by his chin, and softly wiped away his tears with her dupatta. Once his eyes were clear, she quickly cleared her face of every sign of weeping. She took his clenched fists in her hands, and said playfully, "Arnavji, won't you help me choose my engagement ring?"

"Yes...Is there anything that you...find OK? If not, we can try someone else...I want you to have whatever you like...with a full heart."

Khushi looked at the rings, as carefully as she inspected karela and gobi and pyaaz at the market before purchasing them. One ring caught her attention. It was beautiful...like a flower. But maybe it was expensive. It looked expensive. Why couldn't the jeweller have put price tags on them?

"Shall I choose for you, Khushi?"
"Ji..."

He picked the ring that she had liked, and looking into her eyes, slowly slid it on to her ring finger, the fourth finger of her left hand, the one with the nas running directly to her heart. Her heart felt the touch of his fingers and the love flowing through his lips as he kissed the ring and her finger repeatedly.

"Will you choose a ring for me, Khushi?"
"You will wear an engagement ring?", she asked, surprised.
"If you select it, then I will."

She took a long time, picking and discarding hundreds of rings before she got the one she deemed fit enough to grace his finger. A ring as solid as him, with an unexpected slash of diamonds, surprising people who thought they knew him with hidden facets to his personality.

She slid the ring on to his finger, and cupping his hand in both of hers, held it to her heart.

Arnav heaved a sigh of relief. She had forgiven him. Her generous heart was his to have and hold, to treasure and cherish.
