Part 3
Arnav Singh Raizada could count the numbers of jaw-dropping moments in his life on one lean finger but he had a very strong feeling that with Khushi around he would soon need the help of MS Excel to commemorate such events. He let the laptop bag clutched in his suddenly nerveless hand fall with a soft thud, as his wife, still oblivious of his presence, blushed prettily and hugged the photo frame to her breast. That did it. Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada would be paying the piper now. As far as the little minx was concerned, his days of being a gentleman were over. A calculative gleam crept into his dark chocolate eyes as he observed his delectable prey.
The sound of male footsteps alerted Khushi that she was not alone in the room and she whirled around, shoving the photo under the mound of pillows at her back. Her heart lurched in her breast as she saw her husband standing a few feet away from the bed, an inscrutable look in his eyes; had he seen her kissing his picture? What would she do now? Would he ask why was she kissing the portrait? Should she deny doing any such thing? Would he demand a kiss for himself? A tingle ran along her spine at the thought of kissing him and of their own volition her eyes rose to his lips; firm, unsmiling, the full bottom lip inviting closer inspection.
She stood up from the bed on slightly unsteady legs and tugged nervously at the bottom of her kurta. 'Aa aap'I did not see you coming'I'I was just'.', the words died in her mouth as he brushed past her and sat down heavily on the recliner; head bowed, shoulders stooped, the picture of a defeated man. 'That much is obvious Khushi', he sighed, the words barely audible. 'I have been extremely stupid, haven't I?'
Khushi sat down at the edge of the bed, suddenly frightened by his words. Why was he saying this?
From the corner of his eyes, Arnav stole a glance at his wife, Khushi looked pale, her hands knotting and unknotting the bedspread. He hid a smile as he saw her salmon-pink kurta bunched up at her waist, quite snug. Khushi was putting on weight, the near-empty silver platter a silent witness to her binging. Images rose in his mind, of a glowing Khushi round with their baby, nursing it at her breasts; an overwhelming rush of love flooded through him even as his hungry body screamed at him for mercy.
Khushi's eyes flew to him as a tortured gran escaped him. What was hurting him so? But before she could form words to ask him, a loud and imperious knock at the door heralded the arrival of Mami, who had come to commandeer Khushi for their evening rehearsal and a reluctant Mrs. Raizada was dragged downstairs giving her husband enough time to revise and polish his strategy.
For the first time, in the last seven days, Arnav Singh Raizada did not make an entry to watch his wife practice her dance steps, the empty sofa taunting Khushi with his absence. She tried to ignore it by being extra effervescent, laughing louder than usual, finding Mami's lame jokes super funny. But her eyes darted every minute to the stairs, hoping to find him watching her; her mind going crazy trying to decipher his cryptic words.
Irritated by her own inattentiveness, Khushi ended the rehearsal after a couple of hours. She had been so restless throughout the practice, her thoughts wholly on the Laad Governor; her fake chirpiness gave her a splitting headache.
Dinner was an unusually quiet affiar at the Raizada Mansion that evening what with a more sombre than usual Arnav refusing to eat much and the butterflies dancing in her stomach along with the pounding in her head forcing Khushi to follow suit. She excused herself as soon as dinner was over and ran upstairs to join her husband.
Arnav was lurking by the door, waiting for the sound of tinkling anklets; he dragged his pillow and a quilt from the bed and dropped them on the recliner just in time to see his wife burst through the door and halt at the foot of the bed.
'Wh'what are you doing? Why are you doing this? What are you not telling me?', Khushi grabbed his arm, a sense of dread spreading through her. He held her wrist gently and freed himself.
'I don't think it would be right, under the circumstances.'
'What circumstances? What are you talking about?'. Khushi could fee a hint of anger overriding her sense of panic. What was he not telling her?
'Khushi, I know that you are not in love with Shyam, that you have never loved Shyam', he corrected himself. 'But what I have never asked you is, are you in love with someone else? The guy in the photo, whoever he is', he shrugged, not meeting her eyes, 'the guy whose picture you were kissing today, do you love him? Do you want to go back to him?'
