Look I'm early! 😎 I had said I'd update in a week but here's the next update within 4 days!

Before you read on, this update is dedicated to our dear Tish! As most of you know (since I assume we mostly have the same readers) her awesome FF has come to an end. 😭 But hopefully she will be back with more of her amazing ideas! 👍🏼

Chapter 25

He had been pacing the length of the hospital corridor for the past 2 hours now. They had managed to rush her to the hospital and the doctors had immediately taken her into the operation theater. Other than the occasional nurse coming and going, nobody had come out of the operation theater yet.

Amar couldn't think straight. All he could do to calm his anxiety was try to burn of the excessive energy coursing through his veins by wearing out the bottoms of his shoes. He was trying his best to fight back all the images of a weak bleeding Shakti laying limp in his arms out of his mind. He couldn't afford to break down now so he kept consoling himself.

Sneha, Mukti and her parents sat on the nearby bench while Archie stood propped against a wall, lost in deep thought.

As soon as they had reached the hospital Dharmesh had informed Shakti's family before ushering away the rest of their friends with excuses of not wanting to overcrowd the hospital. Only Sneha and Archie had refused to budge and he knew nothing could make Amar leave so he had let them stay.

After what seemed like an eternity the head physician, Dr. Jain, finally stepped out of the operation theater.

Mukti, who noticed him first, immediately ran up to him. "How is she?"

They all crowded around him, desperately waiting for him to asssure them.

"She was stabbed on the left side of her torso but luckily the cut wasn't too deep and none of her vital organs were damaged. There were some internal bleeding but it was immediateely stopped."

"She'll be okay, right?" Archie interrupted, too anxious to care about details.

Dr. Jain paused for a moment, seeming to be wording his answer carefully before he finally spoke up. "Yes she will fully recover and be perfectly fine physically but... " he paused gauging their reactions.

"But..?!" Amar prompted impatiently. He unknowingly held his breath in fear of what the doctor would say next.

"I'm not sure yet since she hasn't regained consciousness but there is a high possibilty that she is emotionally traumatized."

Sneha gasped and they all listened carefully as Dr. Jain elaborated.

"Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless and vulnerable. Usually in such cases when a patient has been physically attacked his or her mind becomes defensive, fearing anyone that tries to approach. She will definitely recognize people but will have difficulty endearing any physical contact, no matter how close she is to the person touching her. I would suggest we wait till she wakes up so I can fully assess the situation." With that said, Dr. Jain left to see to some reports.

To say they were shocked would be an understatement. Shakti was identified by her strong-willed, fighting nature, known for living upto her name. To be told that she was emotionally traumatized, that she felt helpless and vunerable was like skinny-dipping in the Pacific Ocean during December.

They all stood frozen in various postures of shock and disbelief, unsure of how to react to the current situation. After a while Dr. Jain returned with a full report.

"She has regained consciousness. You can go meet her, but only two people at a time. And please be careful with what you say to her. Don't make any sudden movements that may scare her. And keep the conversation light. She is slightly disoriented from the medicine so please try to be quick with your visit so she can fully rest. "

As soon as he finished his instructions, Shakti's mom and Mukti rushed in to meet her. Amar was aching to see her, to touch her, to feel her cradled safely in his arms but he knew that it would only frighten her. Their relationship had already been complicated without the addition of an extra crisis.

Frustrated and unsure of what to do, he paced the length of the hallway only to be stopped by Sneha's reassuring hand. By now the entire gang plus Mukti knew everything that had transpired between the two of them right from the beginning of their breakup to last night's abrupt confrontation.

"Amar, what's wrong?" she tenderly inquired.

"What's wrong?! How about everything.." he sighed in exasperation.

"Sorry, stupid question." She didn't know what else to say. They were all confused about how to handle the current situation. They were so used to the 'I-don't-have-a-care-in-the-world' Shakti that the sudden change freaked all of them out.

One by one they each took turns to go see Shakti. Amar was the last to go in to see her. By the time he entered her room, the drugs in her body had already kicked in effectively putting her to sleep.

He didn't mind, infact he was glad that he could just look at her to his heart's content without having to worry about what her reaction will be to him. Amar gazed at her flawless form, drinking in each and every detail of her features. He noticed she had grown her hair out giving her an extra seductive glint to her looks. She had also become thinner than before which made him frown, wondering if she was eating properly.

She seemed to be deep in slumber. A slight frown graced her lips and her eyebrows were bunched together. He reached out and lightly ran his fingers across the side of her cheek. She seemed to visibly relax under his touch making his heart soar. Even in unconsciousness she was so aware of him.

Before he could get lost in her innocent beauty, Archie silently entered the room asking him to come outside.

They walked out to hear Dr. Jain speaking. "I would suggest someone stays here with her tonight. She will probably wake up frequently in the middle of the night so its better if she isn't alone. I could get a nurse to stay with her but I think it would be better for her if someone she is familiar with stays back."

"Don't worry doctor, I'll stay." Mukti spoke up but Amar interrupted, "No Muks, I'll stay with her."

"But Amar, she's unwell. And who knows how she's gonna react when she sees you. Atleast if I stay she won't really care." Mukti protested.

"Mukti, please I need to be with her. Please!" he insisted.

Shakti's mom spoke up. "It's okay Mukti, let him stay." she turned to him, patting his cheek affectionately. "Take care of her beta."

They all turned to leave and Amar went back into her room.

He pulled up a chair near her bed and settled down for the night, absorbing her essence till he drifted off to sleep.

She was willing her legs to run as fast as possible. She needed to get away. 'Run Shakti, run' she prompted herself, racing through the silent empty night.

She ran and ran until she couldn't inhale anymore. She stopped near a dark alley, bending over as she gasped in air through her mouth.

The sound of running feet behind her was no longer present and she relaxed when she felt a pair of strong rough hands grab her.

"NOOO!" she jerked upright, disoriented by the darkness she was engulfed in.

Amar leaped out of his chair when he heard her scream. "Shaks?!" He reached out and lightly touched her arm but immediately pulled back when she flinched. He remembered what the doctor had said so he decided to calm her down with soothing words.

"Shakti?!" he waited for her to respond as he switched on the bedside lamp.

"Hmm..." she replied, distracted.

He tried again. "Shakti? Sweetheart? You okay?"

She seemed to finally register his presence. She gazed into his eyes as if searching. Her usually readable eyes seemed blank today as he tried to decipher what was going through her mind.

"I think I'm okay" she whispered, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion as she tried to remember what had scared her.

She distractedly chewed on her lower lip. Amar hesitantly reached out once again, gently placing his hand on her shoulder, all the while studying her expression.

She didnt flinch back this time, instead she leaned closer and rested her head on his chest.

Amar froze for a second, surprised by her actions, but instantly relaxed and gently embraced her.

He didnt know what else to say or do so he just kept silent and held her.

Eventually she spoke up. "I remember now."

He pulled away slightly to look at her face. "What do you remember?" he curiously asked while rubbing soothing circles on the side of her neck with the pads of his thumbs.
"I remember why I got scared right now."

He watched her carefully not wanting to alarm her in any way. "You want to tell me about it?" he gently questioned.

She shrugged. "There's nothing to tell. I was running and when I stopped to catch my breath someone grabbed me."

Her detached and emotionless tone along with the lack of any reaction was starting to worry him but he decided to consult Dr. Jain about it later.

"Do you want to go back to sleep honey?" he tenderly smoothed her hair away from her face, trying to convey his love and comfort through his touch.

She again gazed up at him. "Will you stay with me?" she whispered.

His heart melted. Here he had been sitting for hours worrying about how he would deal with her stubborn fight to keep him away yet she was readily submitting to him.

He smiled and tucked her stray hair behind her ear. "You want me to stay?"

She simply nodded and threaded her fingers through his, interlocking their hands. She tugged him towards her till he was half sitting, half laying beside her.

Within minutes she fell back asleep. He remained still, taking in the position they were in. Even though they were lying side by side their bodies weren't touching, not even the slightest bit. The only contact between them was their joined hands resting between them on the bed.

Amar let a small, sad smile grace his lips as he took in the symbolism of the situation. It was as if their posture right now was a visualization of the current state of their relationship. Their entwined hands represents the love and unbreakable bond they share while the gap between their distant bodies illustrates the strains and complications of their relationship.

Trying not to think too much about it and hoping against all hopes that she would recover soon so they could simultaneously mend their relationship he drifted off to a dreamless sleep.

Loved the update pria! So realistic! The way you've described everything was so perfect. So she is gonna have PTSD?? If she is and she is gonna hv to see a counselor then make me a characer since I'm studying to become one anyway :P :P ..I know lame tha but now subah ko aise hi lame joke soojhte hai :P ,.anyway cutting the crap rally loved it! And thank you for updating ahead of time, now give the next update by the weekend :P :P hehehehehe. Love you!
