Chapter 24

Shakti ran as fast as her legs could carry her; past the cramped bodies, away from the crowd, away from the loud music, away from him.

She ran blindly till the ear-pounding beats and heat from crowded bodies were far behind her.

She finally came to a stop at the adjacent garden behind the club and crashed down onto a bench, finally letting all the turmoil of emotions flow out.

Shakti felt utter despair and confusion wash through her as she recalled what just transpired between them moments ago.

'It doesn't make sense! Why was he... content about seeing me? Why didn't he push me away? I thought he was mad at me? I thought he wouldn't want me anymore?' Shakti thought to herself.

She sat on that one bench for what seemed like hours, trying to sort through her mind and heart to find answers.

Her thoughts and emotions cluttered together until she felt like she was about to explode. Finally, when she couldn't take it anymore, she got up and headed towards her car. She didn't have the courage to go back inside and risk running into him. She wasn't sure what her reaction would be if he came infront of her and she didn't have the strength to face it at the moment.

She was walking through the parking lot to her car when she heard loud rowdy laughter and slurred conversations somewhere nearby. Too wrapped up in her own thoughts, she ignored it and kept moving.

She was so caught up in her own thoughts that she didnt even realize it when someone called out to her and then approached her, until she felt a hand on her arm. She whirled around to face whoever it was and her eyes widened in shock and fear. She jerked her arm away from the tight hold and moved back.

"What the hell?" Shakti exclaimed in anger and panic.

"Tsk tsk. Babe hasn't anyone ever taught you that its rude to ignore someone when they call out to you?"

Shakti could feel alarm and terror wash thru her, but she tried to keep her cool.

Standing before her were three extremely drunk, rough looking guys. The one that had grabbed her was scrutinizing her up and down, making her fidget in discomfort. She was beginning to wish she hadnt worn shorts and a flimsy button up shirt. The other two stood at a distance smirking and drinking away.

Considering that she was shaking like a leaf on the inside, she still managed to give a baleful glare before turning away. She had barely taken two steps when she felt that hand again.

This time she lost her composure. She was extremely irritated at herself for feeling fear because of this jerk and she was irritated at the jerk himself for constantly touching her.

"Keep your hands of me!" she shrieked in anger, pulling her hand back again.

"Oooh feisty?! I like." he replied with a smirk.

Shakti's hands were itching to wipe off that stupid smirk for good.

"C'mon beautiful, dont be such a spoil sport. I promise you'll have fun!" he laughed out, reaching towards her again.

She instantly flinched back. "Back the f*ck off!" she bit out, trying to look as intimidationg as possible.

But it seemed like it wasn't working. That stupid smirk was still stuck on his face and before she even knew it he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him.

Reflexively she pushed him away and her right hand flew up until it made contact with his left cheek.

The silent night air echoed with the sound of a body flinching slap.

Shakti watched as his head jerked to the right before he looked up at her in disbelief and shock.

"You filthy b*st*rd, keep your damn hands off me." As soon as those words left her mouth, she instantly regretted it. She silently watched as sheer fury washed through his features before he moved towards her with an eery calm.

"I'm gonna make sure you regret what you just did. After I'm done with you, you won't be in any condition to slap someone ever again" he growled out, as he stalked towards her.

Fear washed thru her veins, rooting her to the ground. Her instincts screamed at her to run as fast as possible but her legs refused to obey. She stood frozen as the three rogues surrounded her.

"Please, let me go!" she pleaded. She had no other choice. She hated to have to beg to these... these monsters but it was her only choice.

They lent a deaf ear to her words as they began to close in on her. She turned this way and that trying to find a way to escape from the tight circle they were prisoning her in.

"Let me go!" she screamed as panic started to overtake her. "HELPP!" she continued to shout as loud as she could manage but the loud music from inside droned her voice out and the deserted parking lot was also of no help to her.

Her pleas only managed to amuse her captors. As one drew closer to her, she pushed him away only to be grabbed by another pair of hands. She tried to fight them off, throwing kicks and punches at whoever dared to touch her.

"I'm not going down without a fight" she muttered to herself as she punched one of them right in the nose.

This seemed to tick them off. One of them grabbed her arms, pinning them to her back while another held her legs against the ground.

The one she had slapped seemed to be the leader since he just stood there casually watching her as his minions imprisoned her hands and feet.

"Time to make you repent" he sneered as he approached her.

She shrank backwards as he reached out and slid his index finger from her forehead to her chin and then down the length of her neck. She flinched and moved her body away as his finger attempted to go lower.

He violently grabbed her as his patience began to wane. She shrieked in pain and fear. She gathered all her strength and fought with all her might, shoving and pushing, but all to no avail. The farther she tried to shove him away, the closer he brought her leaving bruises and scratches on her arms and neck.

He grabbed her hair and pulled to expose her neck. He let out aa low animalistic growl and roughly bit onto her collarbone.

She howled in pain as tears ran down her face. Her mind was completely blank except for one thing, the need to get away.

Even through her panic and tears she continued to fight off his attack on her body as he roughly caressed and groped her. She lost all focus and fervently prayed that this would end soon.

"Dammit!" Amar muttered for the hundredth time.

"Can you shut up already!" Archie whined.

"But..."

"Stop stressing so much, bro." Dharmesh casually intervened.

Amar shot him an incredulous look. "Stop stressing?! How can I stop stressing? She was standing right in front of me and I messed everything up."

"It's not your fault, it just happened." Dharmesh reassured.

"But the damage is done." Amar sighed in defeat.

"Why are you such a pessimist?" Archie questioned. "Atleast wait and see what happens and then react."

Amar groaned in irritation. "Fiiine!"

"Oh shit, I think I left my phone in the car." Dharmesh exclaimed as he patted his jacket pockets. "I'll be back in a minute."

"We'll come with you. Amar needs some fresh air anyway." Archie replied.

The three headed towards the parking lot, laughing and joking about some random stuff when all of a sudden they heard a shriek and rowdy laughter.

"What was that?" Dharmesh asked. They headed in the direction where the sounds were coming from. They noticed two drunk guys laughing and staring at whatever the third guy was doing, whose back was turned to them. Suddenly they noticed another figure hidden from view and held against the third guy. When the guy shifted slightly, giving them a clearer view, what they saw completely surprised them momentarily.

As soon as Amar saw what was going on his vision blurred. All he could see was red. Utter fury washed through his blood. He let out a beastly growl before spurring into action.

His roar broke Archie and Dharmesh out of their trance and they ran after him.

By now the three goons had taken notice of them.

Archie held Amar back as he was too consumed with anger while Dharmesh spoke up.

"Let her go" he spoke with an eery calm.

The guy that held Shakti had pulled out a knife so they didnt want to charge straight away in fear that Shakti, who was still in their grasp, may be harmed.

"Mind your own business."

Amar snapped. "Get. Your. Hands. Off. Her. Before I rip them off" he bit out, making a visible effort to hold himself back.

"Get lost." he barked, tightening his hold making Shakti yelp out in pain.

Her cry sent Amar into a haze of pure rage. He flew out of Archie's grip and charged, effectively breaking the guy's grip on Shakti. Amar spared one moment to make sure she was safely out of the way before turning back. He let free all his pent up fury and frustration as he pounded the life out of the filthy scumbag. He punched and kicked with all his might with single minded determination.

"How dare you touch her?" he roared. "She's mine! Understand? Mine!"

He pummeled his fist into his face and abdomen till he felt blood ooze out and cover his whole body, till he heard a satisfying crunch of bones. But it still wasn't enough. The monster deserved to die and he would gladly do the deed. He lost all focus until Dharmesh intervened.

"Amar stop! You'll kill him. Stop!"

But he paid no attention. Nothing could stop him now.

He finally broke out of his deathly trance when he heard her call to him.

"Kunwar.." she brokenly whispered.

Her defeated and pained tone grabbed his attention and his eyes wildly searched for her. What he saw broke his very soul into a thousand pieces. His Shakti, the girl that lived up to her name, lay at a distance on the concrete floor in a crumpled, defeated heap of limbs and blood. Her head cradled in Archie's lap and one arm outstretched towards him was such a distressing sight it could bury anyone with depression.

He didn't think, he just ran to her, grabbing onto her outstretched hand and pulling her off Archie's lap and into the cirle of his arms. He cradled her slight frame like it was his most precious possession in the world.

"Shakti? Sweetheart? Please stay with me. Keep your eyes open okay?" he cried out, his heart stuttering in an abnormal pattern.

Her eyes fluttered as she gasped in short, quick breaths with great difficulty. She attempted to say something but Archie silenced her.

"Shaks dont talk. Just breath and keep your eyes open. Stay with us." he turned to Amar. "He stabbed her. I dont know how deep the cut is. Just keep talking to her. Keep her awake, I'll go call an ambulance and help Dharmesh." He ran off.

Amar barely registered what Archie said, his attention totally focused on the love of his life bleeding in his arms.

"Shakti?!" he brokenly whispered as tears slid down his cheeks. "I'm sorry, baby! But please, just stay with me. Dont give up. Keep fighting."

He tightened his hold on her, burying his face into her hair and pleading.

He pulled back and looked down at her again as she struggled to breath in oxygen. He brushed her hair back and whispered soft meaningless words to her.

With some difficulty she reached up and cupped the side of his face with her hand and pulled him closer to her till the tips of their noses were touching.

"I..love..you.." she sighed before her eyes slid shut.

Amar felt his heart stop. "Shakti ? " he moved her softly. "Sweetheart, open your eyes!" he shook her a little more. "Shakti ?! Please?" he was pleading now. "Open your eyes." he was angry now. "Stop it Shaks. Open your eyes dammit!"

She didnt respond. She just lay limp in his arms.

"SHAKTI!!!!" he screamed into the night air in sync with the sirens that could be heard at a distance.
