Chapter 3 Catching up with the past(1)
Payal and Aakash climbed down the staircase, hand in hand with OP trailing behind them, carrying the luggage. Khushi watched with tearful eyes as they wished all the members of the household an emotional good bye. Aakash had decided to venture out into movie production and shift his base to Mumbai. Given their contacts with most production houses due to ASR's designer clothes' range, he was confident of running a profitable business. But Khushi had a nagging feeling that Aakash had finally decided to move out just after a month of his marriage because of the constant taunts thrown their way by Manorama. She had felt rage swell up inside her when Manorama insulted Payal and her family but Payal's warning glares always made her control her verbal outbursts. Now, with her sole support gone, she was sure that her bleak ray of survival in Shanti Van was also gone. She hugged Payal silently and wondered what had suddenly caused her family to break up and bounce in different directions.
When they broke apart, her gaze automatically shifted to Arnav who was instructing Aakash over the arrangements he had made for their stay. It was striking how different these two brothers were. Aakash was the calm, relaxed and sensitive man, seldom raising his voice or trying to gain control. He was the kind of person who made you feel affectionate waves rushing towards you with just a smile. Arnav, on the other hand was always bustling with activity beneath his hard surface, always the one to assume responsibility and control. It was quite apparent that he had inherited the shrewdness of his nani. It was hard not to feel his presence around though he was never noisy. Suddenly, he turned around and looked straight at her, deep into her. She was struck by the abruptness of the moment and kept looking at him for a moment longer than necessary before looking away, chagrined.
Arnav had expected a waterfall drama at the "bidai" session of Aakash and Payal. The melodrama was seriously irritating and he closed his eyes and tried to re check all the arrangements he had made. He couldn't help thinking about the life in the house without Aakash. Aakash was perhaps the only person who stood by him, without questioning his decisions, placing his full faith in him. Yet, it didn't feel like a burden to be carried around like Anjali or Nani's faith. Aakash was perhaps the one guy who kept him from losing his mind altogether and stuck by him during the most troublesome phase of his life. He had never really thought that he would ever shift away, given his sentiments towards family life. To watch him walk away created a sudden tightening in his chest and he involuntarily turned around to face his wife, who to his surprise was already looking at him. He could not tear his gaze away as he saw the large orbs widen for a few moments before she bowed away. His heart rate picked up and he bit his lip.
Aakash and Payal settled into their car, leaning against each other. The comfort they derived from the mere presence of the other expanded into the closed space. Affection came naturally to them and so did expression of emotions.
Khushi wandered away in the house, wondering what she could possibly do to kill time. She came across the bundle of newspapers placed on the table. She picked them up to place them in the attic and her eyes fell on the first tabloid of the stack, carrying her husband's picture with a woman as they stepped out of a hotel.
The woman had a willowy frame, wore office casuals and displayed the same confident stride as her husband. They were being flanked by photographers but all of them seemed almost invisible to them as they made their way towards their destination. The image of her being dragged out from the mob at the airport suddenly flashed before her eyes and her hands shook a little. She looked at the news piece again and saw that the lady was labeled as Lavanya Kashyap, Arnav Singh Raizada's Chief Designer and girlfriend. A two way thinking process jerked to life in her brain, throwing contradicting thoughts. Surely, she could not expect a man of his stature to be without a woman on his arm. But it was also quite shocking and she quickly picked up the magazine and rushed to her room, leaving the newspapers there.
Apparently, it was a bad idea as she ran right into his hard chest in her frenzy. He backed away a few steps, rubbing his shoulder where her head had hit him as she tried to form an appropriate apology. In her haste she did not notice the magazine that had slipped out of her grip onto the floor. He bent down to pick it up and his eyes narrowed at the sight of his own photograph. He looked up to see his wife's face which held the traces of betrayal and disappointment as she tried hard to clamp them down.
It looked like he had some serious explaining to do.
