Part 48

"I don't know at which unfortunate moment I handed over the charge of my school to Mallika and Sunita, I don't seem to be taking it back at all." Riddhima laughed.

S: Amma I've told you earlier also, don't stay away from school for my sake. Surya is more than a month old now. I can manage on my own. And Saroja is also so helpful. Anyways appa is going every morning to the hospital site, you could go with him.

R: No, no, kanamma I was just joking. My priorities seemed to have changed since the last few weeks.

Then picking up the little boy she said "This little fellow has cast such a spell on me, that I can't imagine leaving him and going anywhere." "Anyways next month when you go to the US, you'll have to leave him." Suja teased her. Putting the baby's cheek against hers, her amma retorted "Children bring so much joy to the family. I've really forgotten what life was like before he came along. Sometimes I think I should ask athaan to cancel the America trip altogether."

S: Don't say that amma, Karan and Linda are looking forward to your visit so much. They'll be so hurt if you drop your plans now. After all it's a question of only 3 months. Then you'll be back here. And even when you are there, you'll soon have a granddaughter to shower your love.

R: That's true. That's why I insisted on staying there for at least 3 months. Athaan was saying we'll go only for 1 month. Have the ceremony for Linda, attend to his work and come back. I only convinced him that going all the way there we should at least wait for the baby to be born and help Linda recoup by being with her at least till 6 weeks after her delivery. But when I spoke all that this little hadn't come.

Then as if suddenly coming to a decision she said, "I'll do one thing, I'll call a staff meeting on Saturday and talk to them about appointing a new principal, so that I can be guilt free. Otherwise I feel bad that I'm neglecting the school.

"That's an excellent idea!" they heard Armaan's rejoinder. "Why are you so late today? It's way past lunchtime." Riddhima immediately pounced on him. "You first tell me whether you had your lunch and medicines." "You have your police here" she replied looking towards Suja. "She wouldn't let me wait for you. She said she wouldn't eat till I did. I couldn't starve a breast feeding mother. So I had to fall in with her wishes."

"Good" Armaan said putting his arm around Suja's shoulder. "Actually we did the stilt roofing today. It had to be done in one go. They started at 6, but it took longer than expected. I wanted to stay back and see that it was done properly. Otherwise we'll end up with leakage problems later." Then peering at the little one in his grandma's arms said "I'm famished. I'll come and pick you after I fill my stomach."

Handing the baby to Suja, Riddhima said "wash up and come. I'll heat the food."

A: No need to heat up and all, it's ok.

But Riddhima wasn't one to listen. She went ahead and started heating up the food. When Armaan came and started gobbling up the food without a word, she just sat opposite him and watched. She didn't need any verbal compliments. They way he was eating said it all.

When he looked up at her having had his fill, he smiled shyly at her, like a little boy caught red-handed in the act of stealing some eatables and said "I was so hungry," But before he could complete she teasingly said "I could see that." "By the way, didn't Saroja come today? Why did you cook?" he asked as he moved to wash his hands. Surprised by his question, Riddhima asked "Who told you that I cooked?"

A: My tongue told me. I can recognize the taste of your cooking even though it's been only a few months since I've been staying with you.

R: But even in these few months, I haven't been cooking much. It's mostly been Rajesh who did the cooking.

"The very few occasions that you did, have left a lasting mark in my tongue." He said wiping his wet hands and lips with her pallu. Shaking her head at his actions, she held out the towel she was holding for him. Putting his arms around her, he knocked his head against hers sideways and said "I don't need that now."

"If thatha and amamma have finished romancing can you please hold me for some time?" Suja asked in a baby voice. Embarrassed Riddhima moved forward to pick the crying baby, saying "He must be sleepy." But before she could, Armaan took the baby and said "I'll put my grandson to sleep, you mother and daughter rest for some time." "No. no, you've been standing in the hot sun for so long. You must be tired. Give him to me and you go and lie down, athaan" Riddima protested. But Armaan walked away to the small room with the baby saying "I'll make him sleep on our bed and lie down beside him. You both lie down in Suja's room."

They were all gathered around the baby as usual that evening. The little one had now begun to smile. It was a joy to his grandparents whenever he did so and they often argued like children as whom he smiled at more. In that argument Priyam also joined them declaring that he smiled the most at his akka. Suja would smile to herself watching this, thinking that the baby's arrival had really brought all of them much closer.

So it was a tearful farewell when the grandparents had to leave for US. They had been teaching Priyam about how to help her mummy, not to trouble her, etc days in advance. But when the day of departure came, the most difficult part was leaving the baby. Riddhima tried her level best to control her tears but they poured non-stop down her cheeks. Seeing that Prakash teased "I don't think you cried so much even when your daughter was leaving your house after our marriage."

Riddhima smiled inspite of her tears saying "That was a joyous occasion Mapillai, because I knew she was going to start a happy life with her husband." "Did you cry as much when you had to leave me and go?" Priyam immediately questioned. Kneeling down beside her and hugging her tight Riddhima said "Much more, because I'd been staying with you for almost 6 months. Since you mummy had started her job, I used to be with you all the time. And it was very difficult to move back to my house without you." Priyam smiled proudly hearing that.

Her amamma however didn't mention that though she had been sad then, there had been the joy that her own school was ready. She had been excited to get started with the admissions to her school etc. so she had managed to cope up.

But Priyam's remark "Don't cry amamma, go and enjoy yourself in USA. I would have also loved to come, but I'll be detained in the same class if I miss my final exams. Daddy said we'll go after a few years, when thambi also is a little older. And you don't worry about Surya. I'll take care of him and also help mummy" brought her back to the present.

Riddhima kissed her cheeks asking "Why would I worry when I have such an understanding and good granddaughter?" She then reminded herself that now also there was something to look forward to – her first trip abroad and that too with her athaan. Another grandchild, another family, beckoning her.

Inspite of Armaan and Riddhima objecting, the whole family came to Chennai airport to see them off. When Riddhima gave her daughter a final hug and said "take care" she said "Have a wonderful time amma. Make the most of it. You really deserve this." Then hugging her appa she said "I know you'll take utmost care of her, but still I need to tell you she's very precious to me." Armaan nodded and said "She's all that I have. So she's as precious to me, if not more. I promise I won't let anything happen to her."

Seeing them all so emotional Prakash teasingly remarked "Please let everything happen to her, that's why we are sending you both alone on such a long honeymoon." That made Armaan and Suja burst out with laughter but Riddhima turned scarlet and turned to go. They kept waving to each other till they were finally out of sight.
