Chapter 3: Unneeded Introductions
Khushi absentmindedly stirred the soup they would have for dinner, Why would Shyam come to her house? And what did he mean by he'd be back? To her ears that had sounded like a threat, and she knew Shyam enough to know he always meant whatever he said. But what could he possibly want with her? Technically, he was the one that had wanted to "take a break" and she'd just made it easier for him. They had broken up 5 years ago, and if he knew that she had moved on, then why bother?
"What are you thinking about?" Khushi came out of her reverie when she felt Arnav's arms wrapping around her as he threw her a questioning glance. She smiled softly, "When did you get home?"
"A while actually, but you were too immersed in your conversation with the soup!"
Khushi rolled her eyes, "Arnav!"
"Seriously, what's wrong?"
Khushi looked up at his concerned face, he was already so stressed with the overload at work...Shyam probably wasn't serious. She could always tell him later if needed. "Nothing," She replied with a reassuring smile, "It's nothing at all."
Arnav sat in his private cabin going over various files, sipping coffee from a mug.
Outside the wind blew furiously, running through the messy floppy hair of a man who screeched his car to a stop in front of AR. Getting out in style he paused only to wink seductively at a few giggling office staff who stood at the entrance. He sauntered up the stairs, making way to his destination, a frosted glass door, which held a nameplate reading: Arnav Singh Raizada, CEO. Tossing his hair and taking off his leather jacket in preparation, he rapped on the door.
Arnav set the mug down, eyes shifting from his file to the door, "Yes?"
The door opened slowly, and Shyam's eyes fell immediately onto Arnav Singh Raizada, then shifted to take in the pictures which littered the man's desk and the walls.
Arnav looked the man up and down, his disheveled hair, amazingly distressed jeans, plain white tee shirt, and black leather jacket not making quite an impression.
"Can I help you?" he asked politely.
The stranger smiled, sashaying over to drop in the chair in front of Arnav's desk. Grinning he stretched out his hand, "Hello Mr. Raizada!"
Arnav hesitantly leaned over and shook his hand, "Hello..."
Shyam's smile grew wider seeing Arnav disturbed, "I'm Shyam Manohar Jha."
"Hello Mr.Jha," Arnav said politely, "Is there something I can help you with?"
"Well don't I hope so," Shyam said meaningfully, not forgetting to give Arnav a wicked smile. It seemed Khushi hadn't told her husband about his little visit yesterday.
"I'm sorry?"
Shyam chose to ignore him, and continued. "So Mr. Raizada, you're the head of this whole thing..."
Arnav was getting slightly annoyed by this brute who acted like he owned the place. "Yeah, what's your point?"
"I was looking for my friend...Khushi. Wears short dresses, hates wearing her dupatta, extremely straight hair? And she does that shrieking thing, it's really annoying but then you get used to it?"
Arnav just looked at him suspiciously, wondering where this friend of Khushi's seemed to have popped out from. "Khushi, I see. And may I ask how you know her?"
"Well, we used to be great friends back in the day, and then well , you know...we just lost touch. Careers etc, point is I would love to talk to her again," Shyam answered, and knowing fully well that at this rate he was bound to hit a nerve, he continued.
"I wanna know what the little chikkita's up to. And so I was in the city, thinking about the internship, and then I'm, like 'Shyam, dude! Khushi said she was doing her internship at AR!' Not gonna lie, I felt like a genius then, so I headed over. And whoever I ask, they're like 'Ask Mr. Raizada, ask Mr. Raizada.' so I headed on over here."
He leaned in towards Arnav, "Tell me the truth, are you guys like, you know..."
Arnav massaged his forehead, giving Shyam a weak smile. "Khushi..."
"Oh Khushi..." Shyam said with a lovesick tone.
"Khushi's on maternity leave."
"DUDE! you knocked her up?!?!?"
Good God, what is with this guy?! Arnav thought, clearing his throat, he sat up in his chair, he had unknowingly slumped down listening to Shyam rambling. "Khushi. Is. My. Wife." He gave Shyam his signature serious look, the one that made Khushi call him Laad Governor..
Shyam leaned away from Arnav, giving him what seemed to be a nervous smile, "Wow...umm...not gonna lie. I'm speechless."
That's gotta be a first, Arnav thought, he smiled back at Shyam tight lipped, "I can...understand."
They stared at each other uncomfortably for a few moments, before Shyam spoke up again, seemingly unfazed. "So. Mr. Raizada, when can I come over to meet Khushi?" He grinned widely at an astonished Arnav Singh Raizada.
Does he have no manners? Rudely inviting himself over. Arnav thought disgustedly. Now what am I supposed to say to him?
"Hmm. Um... I... Um..." Arnav started, only to be interrupted by Shyam.
"You know actually today would be perfect! I have appointments tomorrow and then I have to leave the day after so..." Shyam grinned again, his wicked mind working overtime. He was really enjoying putting "the competition" in such a spot.
Arnav had no idea how to say No. Shyam kept on driving him into a corner, and he knew he would have to give in sooner or later. Besides, he reasoned with himself, he talks a LOT, scratch that, he talks excessively, but he seems harmless. Just over...enthusiastic? I would be too if it were to meet Khushi. A dreamy smile came over his face as he thought about his wife, but he was disturbed rudely out of his reverie.
"Yoohoo! Mr. Raizada? MR. Khushi Kumari Gupta? You ok there, doc?" Shyam snapped his fingers in Arnav's face.
Arnav looked at his confusedly for a minute, that wasn't Khushi! Oh right... did he just call me Mr. Khushi Kumari Gupta? He glared at Shyam sharply, "Arnav Singh Raizada."
"Sorry!" Shyam said with a sickeningly cheerful voice, "I forgot your name."
Arnav resisted the urge to roll his eyes, along with the childish urge to stick out his tongue, and merely cleared his throat, while Shyam reverted back to the original topic. "So, your house? Today? After work?"
Sighing, Arnav knew he couldn't refuse, and sighed. "Fine Mr. Jha. I usually leave the office around 6..."
"Great! That's only thirty minutes!" Shyam interrupted, glancing down at his watch. "I'll wait in the main lobby until you're ready then!" he offered, getting up.
Arnav nodded curtly before turning his attention back to the files on his desk, "Alright, I'll find you."
Shyam turned away, an evil smirk appearing on his face. He gleefully rubbed his hands together, this had gone like fresh play dough in his hands.
Little more than an hour later Shyam was blithely sitting in Arnav's car, heading over to the Raizada bungalows.Me and Khushi this, me and Khushi that. Does he not understand that she's now married? ARGHHH!!!! Arnav's knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel tightly; in the back seat Shyam sat blabbering away- just like he'd been doing since he'd hitched a ride twenty minutes ago.
Arnav had half a mind to change direction, and instead of driving home, head into the woods where he could dig up a grave and shove Shyam into it. In the seat next to Arnav, Akash slumped down further, staring at his blackberry as if hoping it would teleport him out of the car and away from the constant stream of words flooding in from the backseat.
Finally, another excruciatingly aggravating ten minutes later, Arnav gratefully pulled into his driveway, practically jumping out of the car and sprinting away from the nuisance in the backseat.
Shyam followed at a leisurely pace, an arm thrown casually around a jumpy Akash's shoulders as he asked Akash about his life. A visibly relieved Akash dropped him off at Arnav and Khushi's, running to enter his own sweet haven, never more relieved to have returned to his own home.
Arnav had barely made it into the house when Aman had stared screaming, he now paced in front of a confused Khushi, trying to calm down Aman while simultaneously trying to explain about the visitor,
"Ok. He wanted to see you. And I brought him here, and you have to get him out of here soon."
"Arnav don't be mean!"
"He's annoying!" Arnav whispered fervently.
"Ugh, you're so rude. But, fine! I'm going!"
Khushi walked to the living room leisurely, wondering who this annoying visitor that had Arnav all worked up could be. Then, her eyes landed on the man that was once again settled comfortably on the her sofa.
It was him.
Her eyes widened as she realized that Shyam Manohar Jha had once again forced his way back into her life.
"YOU?!?!?!"
"Khushi darling, forgot me already?"
