Chapter 19
He decided to surprise her by not telling her when he was coming and that Anjali Di was coming back home with him.
When Anjali and Arnav came home at 1.00, Khushi was nowhere to be seen. "Khushi, Khushi…" he yelled looking around for her.
Nani looked scared while telling him "She is not home Arnav. She left for the shop in the morning…"
Arnav was ready to burst a blood vessel on hearing this. How dare she do this! He had warned her yesterday! She had not listened! Let alone obeying him, she did not even consider his feelings….She was going to regret this, he resolved.
When Khushi came back home that evening she was stunned to hear Anjali's voice as well as Arnav's. She wondered why Nani had not informed her. She was apprehensive about meeting Anjali after their last interaction. And Arnav…her heart was beating fast hearing his voice.
She was about to see him after a month. Sometimes she still felt like a gawky teenager about to meet a man she loved. Added to the anticipation, was the fear of what he would say about the fact that she had disobeyed him by going to the shop. But she squared her shoulders. She would not be scared of anyone. She had done nothing wrong;
Nevertheless she tiptoed into the room like a scared rabbit and Arnav's eyes immediately latched on to her.
God she looked lovely! Pregnancy had brought a new beauty to her. She had put on a little weight and is suited her. She was wearing a peach colored salwaar kammez that was tight around her baby bump. She wore pearl drops in her ears. Her hair was pulled back in a simple pony tail. He watched as she smiled hesitantly at Di and then darted a scared look at him.
That look also took in the whole of him…or should he say drank in the sight of him. He saw the love and longing in her eyes that was quickly replaced with a little fear and a stubborn glare. Hmm. She would better be scared, he thought. She had a lot of explaining to do and by the looks of it she was not going to make it easy…stubborn girl!
Anjali got up from her place and headed towards Khushi, "Khushi …I am so sorry…I have hurt you so much…I …" tears came to her eyes at the memory of the things this little girl had gone through because of the two men in her life. Khushi came forward and hugged Anjali, feeling equally sorry for this woman who was so angelically good but had been handed out the worst from fate.
Arnav watched the two women who meant the world to him, forgive and forget the past in a warm embrace. He knew both the women were capable of doing just that…forgive and forget. He knew, like before, they would love each other. He had no doubt Khushi would help Anjali heal.
After that heartwarming moment, Khushi turned towards Arnav and said stiffly, "Hope you had a comfortable journey. Freshen up and I will see about the dinner."
She walked away first to freshen up and then towards the kitchen trying to escape him.
She reached the kitchen and took long breaths. Thankfully Nani was with Anjali Di and the maid had gone to the market.
Khushi had sensed Arnav's anger. Well, let him be angry. As if it bothered her! But she did not want to face him just yet. She opened the fridge to get some milk and just then a hand closed the fridge door and leaning against the kitchen counter was Arnav.
"So…you are running away from me?" Arnav asked sarcastically.
"No. Why should I? I came to get some milk and to see if dinner is cooked," Khushi said.
"Oh really! Good. So tell me why you went to the shop today," Arnav challenged her.
Khushi looked away. She wanted to go and hug him. Wanted him to hug her and kiss her. Instead they were fighting. But she was not wrong and that thought gave her strength.
"Yes I did go. So what? I can do what I want Mr. Raizada. Just the way you can…"she said and walked past him to the stove. His hand shot out and held her arm.
"Not just yet! I have not finished talking. I told you not to go and still you went. Don't you care for my feelings?" Arena asked.
"And what about you? Do you care for mine?" she asked. They stood glaring at one another, neither of them ready to back out.
"Khushi I am warning you…." Arnav was interrupted by Nani's loud call.
"Chote. Your mobile is ringing. Come fast."
Arnav turned to Khushi and said, "I am not through with you yet. We will continue from where we left."
Khushi breathed a sigh of relief.
Khushi deliberately waited for a long time after Arnav went to bed. She chatted with Anjali di and made her feel at home. It was too early to discuss Shyam and her marriage now. But she wanted Di to feel loved and wanted in her brother's home.
At a time when Khushi thought it was safe to go to the bedroom, she sneaked in and slipped into the bed quietly. She had just pulled up the covers, when the bedside lamp near Arnav came on.
"I am not yet asleep Khushi Kumari Raizada," she heard Arnav say.
She turned quietly to face him, "Yes Mr Raizada! Tell me!"
"You did not yet promise me not to go to the shop tomorrow," Arnav reminded her.
"And you won't get that promise because that shop kept me sane when you chose to leave me behind without a second thought." Khushi said.
"I had to be there for Di…" Arnav said.
"Did I ever deny that? You could have explained why you needed to be away. Told me that you wanted me with you but could not do it…there is a way to make a person feel wanted and you definitely don't know that." Khushi said angrily.
Arnav felt guilty of what he had done. But he was not going to let Khushi get away with her mistake either.
"Ok I was wrong in not telling you why I did what I did. But you did not keep me informed about what you were doing either. What were you thinking while taking off to work like that when you are pregnant with my child?"
"My child too," Khushi said, "I was just filling a void and the shop stopped me from feeling lonely."
"Ok you can stop going there now that I am back." Arnav said.
"You can't just appear and disappear and change my life Arnav. I will continue to go till I can and till the baby is due or may be a month before that," she said stubbornly.
"Khushi if you don't listen to me I am going to have to do something really tough," he said putting on his ASR mode.
Well he was still a businessman and he knew how to corner a difficult business partner. He was going to use the same skills to defeat her…just for her sake and the baby's. In this he had the added happiness of keeping someone's welfare in the mind, which business did not offer.
"You wouldn't dare!" Khushi glared at him.
"Try me!" Arnav said folding his hands and looking at her challengingly.
"What will you do?" Khushi asked.
"I will confiscate the car keys and tell the driver to report to office and not drive you to the shop. I am sure you wouldn't be foolish enough to take a cab or auto or bus during this stage of pregnancy. In fact, I am sure you won't put the child's life in danger doing that. Correct me if I am wrong," he said quirking a brow at her.
Tears stung Khushi's eyes. She refused to see the logic behind Arnav's request. She was so upset that he had not even hugged her since coming back. He was going on and on about the shop…as if he did not care for her at all.
She turned away from him in a fit of rage and buried her face in the pillow.
Arnav felt like the worst jerk on earth as he heard her sniffing continuously…knowing very well Khushi was crying….
