Chapter 15

Khushi stood rooted to the spot on seeing Arnav in front of her. She drank in the sight of him. He had grown thin and there were dark shadows under his eyes…eyes that looked full of pain and anguish.

Arnav was having similar thoughts. Her thin frame had become even more fragile. She was wearing his T-shirt, a sight which made him feel reassured about her love for him. The T shirt simply hung loosely from her slender frame. Her beautiful eyes looked larger than ever on her thin face. Her eyes had dark shadows beneath them and she looked half alive.

In a minute she was in his arms and he was smothering her with kisses. Khushi returned the kisses with equal intensity and passion and it was obvious to both that the other was missed.

For some time neither of them spoke much. Only Arnav murmured "Don't you ever do this to me again Khushi….Never, do you get it…" and he continued to kiss her.

"How did you find me?" Khushi asked Arnav a while later, sitting snugly in his lap on the couch,"Dishu told you?"

"Oh no she did not and I will take her to task for that…" Arnav said through gritted teeth.

"No you will not. I threatened her to not contact you. I said I will go to a women's shelter if she dared contact you," Khushi said.

"Sounds like you Khushi Kumari Gupta. You are the most stubborn creature I know. Anyways, her brother did some detective work for me and then…" he told her the story.

"Dhruv was always too smart for his own good. Good old Dhruv. He has always been a good friend,"Khushi smiled fondly.

"Ok that's all you are allowed to admire him," he said sternly and Khushi smiled at his open jealousy.

"I was so miserable without you Khushi. Do you know?" Arnav asked.

"I was no better. Every day I wanted to pick up the phone and hear your voice…."

"Why didn't you Khushi?" But he knew the answer…Di and what she had told Khushi came to his mind. Khushi looked at him with sad eyes as she too knew what he had thought of. If she had to narrate her 2 months of suffering and he had to narrate his it would take all day and then there was the baby news….

In all the excitement Khushi had forgotten the baby and Arnav had not figured out the tiny baby bump beneath her huge T-shirt. She did not want to waste any more time than she already had.

"Arnav I want to tell you something…"

"Don't tell me you want Jalebi," he said groaning comically.

"No I want to tell you…" Khushi tried again.

"Or that you want to make Jalebis" Arnav guessed.

"No I want…" Khushi said hopelessly.

"No let me guess. You have met this new maid whose husband is a drunkard and she has three or four children and she badly needs help …."

"NO! I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BECOME A DADDY…" Khushi finally managed to say.

"That you want to tell me I am going to be a Daddy…I AM GOING TO BE A DADDY…What the!" he stopped and looked at her as if he had completely lost his senses.

"Khushi? Really? When? I mean what the? I mean how...I mean I know how …but when…" he blabbered.

"The day I came here I fainted. The doctor told me then," Khushi said and anxiously waited for the burning anger from Arnav.

"What the! You knew and you did not tell me! And what if I hadn't come? I wouldn't have known! What the…"Then he stopped himself and looked at Khushi. She was going to have his baby…his baby.

Suddenly he lost all his anger and he touched her stomach tenderly. He now felt the tiny baby bump beneath her T- shirt and he ran his hands wondrously over it, "Our baby Khushi…I am so happy. I can understand why you didn't tell me. But I am so happy Khushi. I am going to be a Dad. I hope it's a little girl like you," he said gently cradling her face with his hands.

"No, it will be a boy, like you…with you brown eyes and your arrogant nose…so that I can love him more with each passing day…" she said looking lovingly at Arnav,"And then if someone takes you away from me, I can still live my life looking at an image of you…"

"Who the hell will take me away from you?" He asked and then suddenly remembered Di."Khushi forget the nonsense Di told. Come home with me…"

Khushi looked away and avoided his eyes while Arnav looked at her anxiously…
