Chapter 37: Parents and children
Sometimes we love with pain,
Make dreams and aims,
Without considering the destination,
We sometimes give pain in love.
We nurture without considering ourselves,
Hoping for the best and wishing for perfection,
Yet when they fail to fulfil our ambitions,
It stings and burns because of that care
Vicky sometimes wondered what it would feel like to watch his father die. Would he feel any remorse or any regrets at all? Would the feelings of love for his father emerge with death? He knew that the answer was no for Virender had never really been his father, not in the true sense of the relationship.
So as he watched his father in through the glass partition, he only felt smug satisfaction. There was no sense of wrong or guilt within Vicky though he knew that he had somewhere crossed a line from which there was no return.
His father was bruised and battered from a particularly cruel interrogation that had led to nowhere. All going as planned, Vicky thought happily.
"Well, well. We look very cosy here." Vicky balanced his chair on the back feet, reclining back. "I can't tell you how''..devastated I am to see you chained up and behind bars. It hurts my soul."
"You little bas***d!" Virender had always despised his youngest son. The boy had a certain edge that defied him, a certain lack of rules. He knew that Maan would be aware of Vicky's actions and was in a way setting the pace but Vicky would get immense satisfaction from his fall. "I know you have something to do with this."
"Me?" Vicky pretended to be shocked. "Why would I do such a thing to my flesh and blood?"
"Just wait till I get out of here!" Virender yelled, his temper rising at his son's nonchalant behaviour. "I'll destroy you."
"Hmmm...you are right." Vicky said while looking at his nails. "Why don't we even the playing field. The day you get out, we will let the really game begin."
"And I'll make you regret this." Virender promised. "You'll pay for every moment I am here."
"Oh I am shaking with fear." Vicky laughed out. "Absolutely petrified." With that he got out of the chair and walked out to meet Angie.
"I hope that wasn't too bad." Angie asked in concern, worried how Vicky must feel after meeting his father.
"Not at all." Vicky said with a glint in his eyes, already planning ahead. "By the way how much is the bail for my father."
"10 lakh." She was surprised by the question. "Why?"
"Because I'll pay it." Vicky smirked. Let the games begin. Such twisted relationship we have Virender but finally I'll get my payback. "It's the least I can do for daddy dearest, I'll set him free."
----------------------------------------------
As Geet stared at her mother she recalled an incident with one of her patients. The elderly gentleman had just come out of cardiac surgery and was delirious. In this state he had started to mumble about his mother and how much he enjoyed being in her arms. There had been such a smile of happiness even in his unwell state that Geet had envied him. Once he had gone back to his normal state he had lost that spark despite having come out of major surgery unscathed.
The logical and medical side of Geet told herself that it was because the gentleman hadn't been in the right state of mind was the reason for his happiness, not his mother. Yet another part, the one that still believed in love, had wanted to believe that it was because of being with his mother.
But as she saw the look of happiness on her mother Geet could grasp what the man had felt. It didn't matter that she couldn't find it within herself to forgive her parents nor that she wasn't willing to let them get in touch with Meliara. At that moment she was a girl looking at the woman who had nurtured her with love and held her when she ever she had come running to her.
Yet it was her mother who came running towards Geet. She grasped on to Geet and embraced her. Geet could neither return the hug nor could she move away. She convinced herself that it was because she didn't want to create a confrontation in front of Mel because the truth was unacceptable.
The sensation of being in her mother's embrace was as familiar as the air she was breathing or her own heartbeat. She could never forget her mother's scent or the softness of her hand as she patted Geet.
Some things stayed within you regardless of whether the whole world would collapse or if you became someone different.
And Geet could feel a crack in the boundaries she had created for herself to protect from grief that she knew would flood her carefully created world the moment they dropped. It was unacceptable and frightening so Geet steeled herself.
"Geetu." Her mother said with a voice choked with emotion. "Geet." Her name sounded like a prayer and hope on her mother's lips. Yet she could not return the hug.
Abruptly Geet broke out of the hug and moved away from Rano. She saw that her mother had a hopeful look on her face despite the tears swimming in her eyes. "Geetu you came back. I can't believe it! Is this Mel?" She looked at the little girl with a big smile on her face, while Mel smiled hesitantly.
Geet watched as her mother brought her hand forward to touch Mel but she stopped her by gently pulling Mel back. Geet didn't let her continue the emotional talk, needing to bring back rationality. "I am here to talk about Mel, nothing else." She almost flinched as she saw the fleeting look of pain and hopelessness cross Rano's face at the rejection.
But today she was a mother as well. Once she had been a sister and a friend to two people she had loved unconditionally but that had been taken away. It was for those relationships that she held strong and didn't melt.
"Geetu...Geetu'" Rano made a few attempts at trying to make Geet soften but she couldn't find the words. So instead she focused on Geet's comment. "Your father isn't at home at the moment. Why don't you wait for him here?" Rano couldn't help but plead with Geet, knowing that Geet would want to leave as soon as possible. "Let Mel spend some time with us."
"I'll go next door to Nonna and then come back later." Geet rejected her mum's offering, not wanting to get further entangled in the emotional mess.
"No, stay with me for a while." Darji commanded Geet. IT was a voice he rarely used for his granddaughter, yet he wanted to spend some time with her. "Bring Mel along with you."
Unable to refuse her Darji, Geet nodded and got ready to follow him.
Maan had been standing there in silence, watching the family reunion. He could see in the stiff way Geet held her shoulders that she was tense and it made him want to comfort her. Neither Geet's mother nor her grandfather had even noticed him because of their preoccupation with seeing Geet.
However at that moment, as Geet was walking away, Rano asked curiously. "Sorry, who are you?" Darjii also noticed him at that point and just raised an eyebrow at the stranger.
Maan wondered how to answer the question and looked at Geet for clarification. Geet just glanced at her mother with a tiny frown, wondering what to say but settled on saying, "This is Maan." She didn't add anything else, telling herself that her mother no longer had any right to question her life.
"Namaste." Maan said awkwardly, following Geet's lead though he did feel bad for Geet's mother who looked further upset at Geet's abrupt response and reticent.
"Namaste beta." She tried to smile at him. "Why don't you sit and have some tea."
Geet was ready to protest but Maan spoke before she could. "I would be delighted."
Meliara also nodded, "I'll come as well knight!" She seemed to want to spend more time with him. He automatically took her hand and just glanced at Geet, telling her with his eyes not to fight about the issue.
A disgruntled Geet sighed and put her arm around her Darjii to walk him towards his room.
--------------------------------------------
As Geet entered Darjii's room she smiled with recollections of her childhood. It was here that she had learnt to read and write. Her grandfather had sat with her and patiently taught her. More than teaching he had made her understand the value of knowledge. Despite his cultural ideas about women he had always felt that everyone was entitled to gain wisdom.
Darjii gingerly sat on his rocking chair while Geet ran her hands down the spines of books sitting on the shelves. Plato's Republic, Shakespeare's Tempest and Hemmingway's The old man and the Sea.
Somewhere in time she had forgotten the pleasure in such small things. Caught up in being a mother, friend and doctor, she hadn't let herself enjoy such moments. Yet it had been her Darjii's most important lesson for her, "Enjoyment comes not from the activity itself but-"
"But from the personal interpretation and expectation." Darjii completed his own quote for her. His eyes misted as he recalled when he had spoken those words, to a small 8 year old Geet and an older Rahul. "Apni Darjii ki baat ko yaad rahki iske liye shukriya!"
"How could I forget?" She smiled sadly.
"But you did forget Geet." Darjii's voice sounded heavy, as if he was trying to hold back his emotions. "In punishing your parents you left me as well without looking back once."
"I...I just couldn't stay here. Everything about this place just hurts me." Geet went over to him and in an old habit sat on her knees next to his rocking chair. "If I could have been with you than I definitely would have stayed but...I just couldn't. I would have lost myself."
He sighed at her comment, understanding the truth yet filling helpless at the rift inside the family. "I understand but sometimes we have to force ourselves to move on. Otherwise we will be frozen while life goes on without us."
Despite the serious words Geet smiled, feeling happy that her grandfather was still the same and he still felt the need to give her advice. "Darjii it wouldn't matter how many people I meet you'll still be the one advising me."
"Who else would dare!" He tweaked her nose, understanding the need to lighten the conversation. "And you will always be my small granddaughter."
"You are still the handsomest man!" She winked at him, unconsciously reverting back to her old ways with her grandfather. It was almost as if she was back to being a cheeky teenager teasing her gramps. "How many girlfriends do you have, apart from Nonna that is?" She laughed dodging her grandfather hand as it tried to hit her head.
"Besharam!" He said with mock anger. "Apni Darjii se ase baat koi karta hai kya!"
"Geet Handa does." She laughed but it died as she remembered sitting here with Rahul as they both teased Darjii and she had said the same words. She closed her eyes at the pain that memory bought. Oh bhai...if only you were here, if only. "And Rahul."
"Rahul" Darjii repeated, as if saying something almost sacred. The word changed the atmosphere, as if creating something tangible between them.
And it reminded Geet of her anger. It reminded her of all that she had lost but more importantly the loss of her two people who had never had the chance to truly live.
"I'll never forgive them." Geet growled out breaking the silence. "I'll always hold them accountable for Rahul and Lily's death!"
------------------------------------------
Virender had never held himself accountable for any of the pain he had caused the numerous people in his life. Everyone had been just a pawn for his own greed and enjoyment.
So even though he had just come out from a sticky situation, he wasn't too worried about himself. He was arrogant enough to believe that he would walk away without any harm or accountability. He was sure that his secretary had bailed him out, so he hadn't even bothered to call to find out.
Thus Virender was a relaxed man when he entered his hotel room that had been privately booked. But that calm was not to last.
Within seconds of entering his body was slammed against the floor with a slight figure straddling him.
"Hello scumbag." Sanji said so sweet, making it sound that much more sinister. "Someone's been very naughty, getting caught and being thrown behind bar!" She giggled like a little girl.
"Should have stayed there." Aash smirked as she kneeled down next to Virender. Like the other girls her eyes and hair was cover, leaving her mouth visible so Virender could see the smirk. "Your days are now numbered."
"Well lets make them count" Sanji was laughing harder and then so swiftly that he had no idea how she did it, she stabbed him in the upper thigh, right next to his groin. "Oopsy! Well I promise not to miss next time."
"ARRRHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" Virender screamed out in pain. He could barely breath as Sanji pressed down a bit harder on the wound before standing up.
"Stop turning on the horny guy." Virender recognised this as the girl who was perpetually bored. Amru was actually quite enjoying it but still she let her usual tone through. "bas***d needs a reminder of what we can do." With that she took out her gun and shot him on the other thigh. "See we mean business."
Aash as usual was no nonsense. "This is just a preview of what we will do to you. Everyday you'll wake up shaking in fear, not knowing when we will come. And trust me we will come." She pressed her stileto heel down on the gun shot and ground against it.
"Your time is running out. Tick tock'.tick tock'." Amru gave a hard kick to his head, knocking him out. "Time out."
---------------------------------
Maan felt highly awkward as he sat in front of Rano Handa with Meliara sitting next to him. He felt a mixture of anger and pity towards the woman. Anger for the way she and her husband had treated their daughter, yet pity because he could see that she was tortured by the separation.
And he also understood that it was very important for Geet to reconcile with her parents in order to move on with her life. That was the only reason he wasn't getting angry at her mother, for his anger and frustration was nothing in the face of Geet's pain.
Maan saw the way Geet's mom was looking at Meliara, almost as if she couldn't take her eyes off Mel.
Mel just clutched onto Maan's hand, feeling a bit awkward amongst this stranger. "Knight, why are we here?" She asked in a small voice.
Maan turned to look at Rano and saw the acute pain on her face. He knew that she was feeling upset that her grandchild didn't even recognise her.
For that moment Maan thought about his mother's words. A mother will love her child through anger, resentment and even hate because a child will always be part of the mother.
He had seen that unconditional love in Geet's eyes for Mel but he also saw it on Rano's eyes as she had held Geet.
It was for that reason he turned to Mel and said, "This is your grandma."
Mel's eyes widened with surprise and pleasure. She turned to Rano with excitement and asked, "Are you really?"
"Yes...yes I am." Rano could barely hold back the tears as she looked at the child. "I am your grandma." She truly was Mel's grandmother for Rahul had been like a son to her. She had looked after him since he was a toddler and she had never let him feel the absence of a mother. And to see his daughter here while he no longer lived created a storm of emotions within her.
She clasped onto the little girls hand wanting to take her into her arms but Mel was still a bit apprehensive and held onto Maan.
Maan gently told Mel, "Honey why don't you go and watch something on TV. I am sure there is some cartoon on."
Mel happily nodded and walked off into the corner of the room easily distracted. That left Rano and Maan facing each other.
"So...why did you kick Geet out of the house?" Maan asked bluntly, wanting to understand Rano's point of view.
Rano closed her eyes as she tried to calm herself. She felt both angry and sad that a stranger could question how she had treated her daughter, yet the truth was that she was responsible.
"Geet...Geet and Rahul were our children." Rano tried to gather her words. "Growing up, Geet was far more intelligent than any child in her school and she excelled in anything she attempted. But she had been a very sick child. So we had lived in fear for years that she would leave us. And that fear began to extend to Rahul. As she became healthy we became greedier but still held her close to us. We built dreams out of air, knowing what she was capable of. Mohinder and I wanted only the best for our children, feeling that whatever life Geet and Rahul strive for perfection."
"When Rahul married Lily we were stunned despite their relationship having blossomed right in front of us. It felt like he had betrayed everything we had taught him, not even considering what a lovely girl she was. All we could see was the shame that he had brought up on us. This all meant that Geet had even more pressure on her to lead the perfect life and she had succeeded until she had gotten pregnant. At that moment Mohinder and I felt like we had failed in rearing our kids, that we were failures as parents. That thread that connected us to her felt weakened."
"So you decided to throw her away." Maan let his voice fill with disdain despite feeling sympathetic for her.
"We still loved her and love her!" Rano protested. "Do you know how it is to be a parent and to see your child fall? Do you understand what it means to let your own flesh and blood walk away! We were blinded by an anger that could only be caused by love. We would have forgiven her and brought her back with time but time was the one thing we didn't have. You don't know how many nights Mohinder and I worried about our pregnant daughter. There were times when we were ready to walk out the door to bring her back. But our pride in our daughter was our downfall."
"I understand." Maan choked out the words but they were sincere. "but what do you want from her now?"
"We just want her and Mel back." Rano begged. "Mel is the only thing left of our son, the only way we can repent our mistakes."
"So you want to separate them?" Maan asked, though he had a fair idea of what Rano and Mohinder had planned.
"No because we knew that if Mel was here Geet could never stay away." Rano looked down in shame. "Maybe we aren't going about it the right way but we only wanted our children back."
Maan nodded in acceptance but still said, "I can understand but I won't let you hurt Geet."
Rano looked surprised by his comment. "Who are you to her?"
Maan thought about all the answers he could give but then he settled for the truth. "I am in love with her and she loves me." He pause for a second, knowing that the next words could create vast amount of trouble. "And I am the one who got her pregnant."
