A Night to Remember
Two
After one hour, she woke up unexpectedly to his surprise and only to give herself shock to the whole system of hers. As soon as she opened her eyes with a sharp headache, she saw Maan with horror on his face, and looking out from window, something just something, that she was not aware of and something, he had no idea what was going on there. All they could hear was a blasting and ear jerking sounds from other wing. And, then it all stopped. It was pin drop silence for moments and then, again they heard the sound of gunshot, he correctly thought, there was a shooting going on somewhere in the part of the big, vast area of this hotel.
'God! This headache, Ahhh…' she clutched onto her head snugly and again, lied down on the bed.
He turned around and looked at her and then, despite he did not wanted to, he gave her meds and lime juice.
'You…? How dare you…?'
'Shut up. Just keep your mouth shut, you were drunk and I just saved you otherwise you would have been in someone's bed right now and god knows…'
'SHUT UP! You…you…who the hell asked you to…?'
And he, within a fraction of a second, held her hand with his one hand and shut her mouth with another. He gave her the deadliest look ever she experienced in years, and continued,
'There is something seriously wrong here, so contrary to your personal belief, you are not the center of the universe and you are not only one who is suffering here, so keep your mouth shut and take these meds, TWO! And, the juice and we quickly have to move out from here. Do you hear that?' he asked in anger and then, his voice expressed fear and anxiety.
And then only she concentrated on the sounds outsides the room and she was shocked. The deep, unknown fear from his face, exchanged to her mind and face, she quickly took it, gulped down the juice and took meds. And, within next minute, she got up and led the way. As soon as they reached corridor, he noticed that something was unpleasantly mistaken and they were in a big mess, all he wanted was to get out from there as soon as possible, and get her out from his sight. They were walking silently and speedy and then, he saw a man, a man with heavily loaded gun in his hands and a lot of weapons attached with his beg and some hand bombs in his net pocket, the man was not aware that someone was crossing the corridor. Maan saw him and a gush of fear ran down his spine, and he was confirmed then, something was amiss. And out of the blue, he realized that they were walking alone there without security, they were not more than few yards away from the first step towards the death road, he, swiftly pulled her hand who was leading him, and before she understood anything, he quickly shut her mouth and showed her the armed man, and then, he saw her eyes expressing extreme terror that he could heard the loud beats of her heart and felt the shivering to her spine. She literally, shuddered. And then, he hid them behind the wall and silently signed her not to panic.
They came back to their room in next few seconds, tiptoed. After they reached room, he locked it and checked once again, and then, Geet gasped for air, she was way too much shocked. She sat on the bed with trembling hands, she took a deep breath to compose herself, and calm herself but it was of no use, finally she dropped the idea, and got up and started pacing down and forth, while Maan just stood there rooted, thinking something, just something when his mind was full of shock and traumatized.
'What was that? Who the hell is he? What's going on here?' She shouted.
'Shh…Quiet. Keep quiet and let me think, just do not shout. Okay…I should call Mehra!'
And he quickly called on the reception but the call was dead, it was of no use, and then he decided to call on his personal phone as he had it.
'Hello, Mehra…What is this sound and what the hell is going on here? We want to move out from here…Hello…'
There was a silence for few seconds, as she looked at him impatiently with big, fear drained eyes and trembling hands. After few more seconds, he cut the call and looked at her with frightened expression, she signed him with her big eyes to speak something, he waited and then, he said it,
'There are terrorists in the hotel and the hall and few parts of the first wing have been vanished in blasts…they killed too many people…'
'…oh my god…oh my god…what we are going to do, now? Oh my god, Maan…' she said in utmost horror, and for few seconds, she forgot that she hated this man until now, and she just did not want to see his face.
'He advised me to stay in here, until help comes. And…'
'And what?'
'He said we are on our own as he is also trapped, he can't help much.' He said disappointedly.
She looked at him in terror; it was clear in her eyes that it was the end. He was buying time to think about something, but looking at her like this, in terror and fear, he could not help but get more angry and hyper. But he tried to control his anger and tried to be as kind and calm as he could.
'Geet…I know its scary, but please your panic attack would not help it at all…if you want to stay alive then be here with me and let me think something.'
'I would rather die but stay with you here, Mr. Maan Singh Khurana. I don't need your help, I can take care of myself…I don't need you. I am going.' She shouted.
She was much more panicked and shocked to think about logic and sense, she did not wanted to be with him, he was a killer…she stopped her thoughts and pulled back, and headed towards the door.
'Then no one is stopping you…I am not doing any favor, I am not dying to be with you even, okay?' he snapped.
'Fine, then. Go to hell. I hope you die…' she left the room running like wild.
'I wish the same…' he said but she was not there to hear it.
He bang the wall with his fist and tilted his head to the wall, it was the last thing on earth he wanted. Being with her under one roof was impossible. He stood there against the wall for sometime in peace for few minutes and then suddenly he heard the voice of a gunshot and he missed a beat. He was never ever so much cruel, so much ignorant to his alert mind, even if he loved to hate her, what he heard before few seconds scared him to death, as if he lost something, a part of his soul. He did not think much, not about himself, not about anything else, what would be the case if he would go out; he just thought about her and left. As soon as he found himself on the corridor, he was looking for her everywhere. His eyes searched for her everywhere, he was impatient, restless and scared – for her. He did not even realize when his eyes got moist; he considered it as a sign of tear from rage and fear.
He was extremely frightened and anxious as his eyes searched for her; he did not even realize that he was walking around on the floor as if there was nothing wrong there. He decided to check at the reception and he decided to choose elevators but he knew it was dangerous, so he chose stairs. He was about to run down as he saw her. She was hiding herself behind a huge flower vase, completely turned into a ball and covered her both hands to her legs. She was trembling and sweating frenziedly. Even in this tense situation, on his M shaped lips, a bright smile appeared as he saw her in front of him, most importantly, alive. He tried to hide his smile and he succeeded, he took a breath of relief, he fell down on his knees and looked at her, she saw him, she was crying wordlessly. He shook her shoulders as she was in trance, she saw him straight into his eyes and cried more, he understood that she was traumatized, it was not the time to explain her, and anyways, after three long years, yet, silence was there communication, their relationship did never require words, they used to express their affection and love by actions, he quickly swooped her up in his strong arms and tried to run as fast as he could. But before they could reach their room, they heard a blast, his entire body was in shock for a fraction of a second, he was numb, she was in her arms but he did not felt her, just like that, she did not felt him, too. The explosion was loud enough to turn their ears deaf and mind, blank for moments. He lost the balance and he fell on the ground along with her. They could not feel or see anything for few seconds as they were clouded by smoke from all over, he tighten his grip over her hand and coughed hard as the smoke in the place was harmful for them, he could not breathe properly for few seconds. Even the amount of smoke was enough to kill them, in the small place; anyone would suffocate and die brutally without even a single drop of losing blood. It was horrifying.
He, without noticed his own thoughts, thanked god as they were safe, they were not injured much, at least she was not. He touched his forehead and felt wet, he saw his fingers and saw blood, he tried to get up but it was much blurry to his vision and then he felt her fingers running over his forehead, he pushed her away but did not loosen his grip over her hands. He got up and helped her to get up, and they tried to find a way. The place where they checked in before almost an hour has turned into ash, half of the place was burning, the five star hotel of the city was surviving the terror attack and giving in. The stylish furniture, imported crockery, world class designs and incredibly luxurious VIP suits had turned into ash, it was all on fire. They ran for their life, before they turn ash in the same place. They had no place to go, they did not know where to go and what to do, and then again they heard shots, he assumed that there was shooting out on the level below. He just wanted a place, just one small place where he could hide her and they can be safe at least and until they receive any help. They noticed that they were alone on the floor, it did not click his mind before and then, he realized the fact that all those rooms which were blown out in the blast, they were just not rooms which turned into ash, but along with that all those people in those rooms were also died. He once again thanked god and Geet as she ran out and somehow they missed it otherwise, they would have been dead.
They were running wild and blind and out of the blue, she pulled his hands powerfully as she saw one small room around the corner, she tried to open the door but could not, he pushed the door, again and again. He broke the door, it was not room at all, it was just like a small place for hotels for temporary laundry, there were few bed sheets, quilts and covers folded and placed neatly and carefully on the racks. They were mentally tired; they sat on the floor, instantaneously. They looked at each other, exchanging expression of being saved for the time being. For that particular moment, they both forget that when they came here, they hated each other and they did not wanted to see each other but still they were together, scared - scared for their lives.
'Look we won't survive this if we stay alone, so you have to be with me. Its common sense, I know you hate me but trust me! The feeling is mutual, but just bear with it. There is no option, unless you want to die brutally by gunshots or in blasts by terrorists.'
She did not say anything, as she knew he was right, it was making sense, they were not safe and for the first time in life, she was not sure about next morning, whether she would ever witness sunrise or not. She was scared and literally, quivering. And, a horrible feeling came to her mind, and she started to cry as she thought about the other people, by now she knew that so many people were dead and she felt awful.
'They all died…I mean…they are…dead. Before an hour, they were like us…living, taking breaths and now…they are no more in this world, Maan.'
He felt dreadfully helpless and upset. He was fuming by then, by this act of foolishness and selfishness. He was frustrated as he could not do anything, he was sad because people were dying and he, somewhere knew that there are less chances of them to survive this. But he had to control her because he knew it was not the time to break down, it was time to remain active and find solutions. He wanted to take her in his arms and soothe her, kiss her tears away but he knew she would not like it, so he just sat there in front of her and asked her to look straight into his eyes,
'I know…I know, Geet. It is indeed, very much sad and disgusting feeling but this is not time to break down, this is time for us to do something, we can't sit here and wait for death, and we have to get out from here, so please…calm down. Don't think much. Let's see what we can do. I am calling police.' And he tried to call but it was of no use as the connection was lost or jammed and possibly dead.
They were unaware of the fact that help was already there but it was too big place to control. The news has been spread and it was officially declared as security breach and terrorist attack. They were sitting on the cold floor, she was crying silently and he was still trying to call someone, knowing the fact that he won't succeed. He tried and tried and at last, when he was discouraged by his failure, he threw it away. Geet realized it that he was upset, she wanted to calm him down as she knew him well and his anger, she knew only she could calm him with her fingers running down his face with love and affection but she knew he was stubborn and that would not help at all, and she did not wanted to, a part of her mind wanted to calm him but again, a part of her mind still hated him, after all, he hated her, too. He kicked her out. They remained silent for a while; in between there was a time when they heard the furious sounds of gunshots and blasts. They did not utter a single word. And then suddenly, to his surprise, she broke the silence,
'I never thought I would spend my night here like this and that too, with you!'
'Neither me'
'After three months we met and like this?' she smirked bitterly.
'It's better than last time, I would say' he smiled a little, no doubt it was forcefully made a fake smile.
And then, they both were down the memory lane, before three months, in his office.
She tried each and everything to convince him to sign the divorce papers but he was being stubborn and a real pain in ass for her, as she used to say. She was tired and frustrated, she had had enough and that day, she was determined that she would get those damn papers signed. As soon as she reached the office, she ignored the requests of his secretary and pushed the door of his cabin with full force and entered.
'Who the hell let you come in here?' he screamed in anger as he saw her, disturbing his work.
'No one, I have my own legs, I can do the honor.'
'Then, get out! Get lost with the same your own freaking legs!'
'Only after you sign the papers.' With that she handed him the papers.
'Not in this life.' He smirked.
'Okay. So I can sit here as long as you are being a jerk.'
'Just get out and don't disturb me.'
'Then sign the papers.'
'I won't' he snapped.
'Why? Why the hell can't you, man?' she screamed out loud, with a frustrated look.
'I will not. I am not obliged to give you reasons, wifey!' he said trying to piss her off.
'You…You Bast***…'
'Mind your language, honey! Is that how you call your hubby?' he smiled.
'Hubby, my foot! You just sign the papers.' She again, shouted.
'After ruining me, after kicking me out from your home and humiliating me, what do you want, huh?' she asked again, in loud voice.
'Oh! Please…You are the one who cheated me, considering that I was still nice to you. What you did to me was more unethical and low standard.'
'I don't want to discuss anything with you, just sign the papers.'
And then his cell phone rang. He picked it up and she waited few seconds to read his reaction which seemed like shock, the initial shock was then, turned into panic, concern, and worry and then at last, anger. He cut the call immediately and looked at her angrily.
'You want a divorce? Here…'
He snatched the papers away from her and signed it within a fraction of a second.
'Get out from here and get out from my life. Just go!'
She was taken aback by his gesture, and before she could comprehend anything he just went away like a storm. She wanted to know why all of a sudden he signed the papers, she wanted to know why he gave up easily, and she wanted to know what happened suddenly as he signed it without one single question. She wanted to know why after one full month of pleading, begging and requesting him, he was sure that he signed the paper. She wanted to know why he was worrying and for whom? But she knew she would never get the answers and she did not need to, even. She was free, he freed her. She could get away as she wished and as she wanted. She stood there in shock for a second and left with a teary eyes, for a failed relationship.
