CHAPTER TEN: SACRIFICE

Khushi got off the bus. It was a beautiful morning or so thought khushi. Everything seemed oddly good. She couldn't wait to meet arnav. Now that she knew her feelings for him it was hard for her to stay away from him. Boy, love sure did weird things to people. She was nervous too, she felt butterflies fluttering around in her stomach. She dropped off Anushka and headed straight for the office. She kept glancing in the rearview mirror to check her appearance. She'd never felt so conscious before. Atlast she reached the office. She parked the car and entered the building. It was unusually quiet but khushi paid no attention, she entered the floor and pressed the button. The lift opened but khushi remained where she was. It was an odd site. The office seemed to be empty. Only a few people were sitting at their desks working.

'Oh hey khushi. What are you doing here?' said sandy

'What do you mean?'

'Umm you don't know?'

'Know what?'

'Last night arnav's dad had an accident. He's in coma. Arnav n his family were there all might.

'What? I- He- Why didn't he tell me?'

'Search me. But listen im headed there. Wanna come?'

'Ofcourse. Ill follow you in my car'

The two ladies took off for the hospital. All the happiness seemed to have evaporated, she couldn't understand why arnav didn't inform her. Maybe he was too busy.. yeah that must be it. All that mattered was now she knew and she'll be with him n a matter of minutes. Khushi parked her car next to sandy's. She rushed inside. On reaching the reception, they were directed towards the third floor. Elevator doors opened and khushi and sandy stepped out.

'Arnav…' said Khushi. Sandy had moved to sit by arnav's mom.

Arnav turned to face khushi.

'Why didn't you tell me?' asked khushi.

'Im sorry its just.. its been crazy. Everything just seems to be falling apart and-' he broke mid sentence as emotions took over. Khushi moved to hug him.

'Hey c'mon you gotta be strong. For your mum and you brother.'

'Yeah yeah youre right'

They sat down. 'So when did you get back?'

'About an hour ago. How've you been? What do the doctors say?'

'It was a serious injury. His left side is paralyzed.'

'Arnav im so sorry. He'll be fine. I know he will'

Arnav smiled but didn't reply…

A few days had gone by. Each morning khushi would drive to the hospital with breakfast for arnav and after office she would drop him off there. This had become a routine for her. In these few days khushi had noticed the change in arnav. He was much more devoted to his work now. Infact he was working harder than ever.

'Hey its lunch break. You wanna go grab a bite?' said khushi

'No I just gotta complete this...'

'Arnav cmon, youre working way too hard. We're bit of a competition now' she joked

'Khushi I said no. Please leave me alone.'

'What is it with you? Look I know youre worried but your attitude wont change a thing'

'I know im sorry. Its just I don't wanna burden bhai with all the work. Everyone is so worried'

'And I understand that but cmon you cant get locked up here'

'Alright ill be down in a minute.'

Khushi hadn't confessed her feelings yet. It wasn't the right time. But her heart ached for arnav. She hated seeing him like this. His usual funny self seemed to have faded away in just a matter of days. She could relate to him more than he knew. They had lunch in the near by caf but it was a quiet one. It was five by the time they got back. Time flew by and alas they got out of the office.

'You'll spend the night at the hospital? ' asked khushi.

'No bhai'll stay tonight'

Khushi couldn't think of anything to say. Suddenly time seemed to have slowed down. It always went by in a blur when they were together but now things seemed more… restrained.

Khushi looked over at arnav, only to find him deep in thought.

'What are you thinking?'

'Nothing..'

'Arnav?'

'Its just that… nothing is permanent is it? Sunday was so perfect and the next thing I know life just turned upside down. Mom is so worried all the time and bhai…'

'It's a tough time arnav. But it wont last. And then everything will be fine' khushi reassured him with a smile.

'Thank you.. for being there for me' arnav smiled back.

'Always'

The car came to a halt. Arnav got out of the car and watched khushi's car disappear.

In his room arnav was deep in thought. He was always thinking nowadays. In the past couple of days khushi had always been there for her, offering him condolences. But was it possible now for him to include her in his life as more than a colleague, a friend. Now when everything was so messed up, when he should help his brother with business. Wasn't that what his dad had always wanted? Shouldn't he be there for his mom, tell her it'll be alright as long as they stick together. But what if he didn't wanna let go? What would it be: his responsibility towards his family or his love for khushi?

'Mom?' arnav rushed to sit by her.

He was in the kitchen drinking water when he heard someone sob from his mothers room. He hurried to her room to find his mom in tears.

'Oh arnav! Im so sorry *sob* ive just been so worried *sob* your dad…'

'Mom it'll be fine. Youll see. I wont let anything happen to him.

Once his mom had called down, arnav came back to his room. Something inside him snapped when he saw his mom cry like that.

His mom had mad the choice for him... His responsibility was far more greater than his love.

The next day was the same a yesterday. Only now arnav seemed more distant. Khushi returned home exhausted. Jumbled thoughts ran through her mind.

A very odd thing had happened today. Her thought ran to what had happened earlier today…

Khushi went to arnavs office to get some papers signed. But on entering his office he saw him embrace Lavannya. But that wasn't what had bothered khushi. They both were acting weird. When they saw khushi, arnav stopped mid-sentence. And suddenly Lavannya was in a hurry to leave. What is that they were hiding?

.Another memory flashed by and it all dawned upon khushi. Sunday was so perfect' isn't that what arnav had said. And sunday – he had a date with Lavannya on Saturday. So.. Did that meant that they now liked each other. That her so-called plan had worked just when khushi didn't want it to.

'Dee? What – Why are you crying? Whats wrong?' Anushka had entered the room to stumble upon the sight of her sister crying.

'I lost him Anushka… I lost him'

'God damnit! Why does this have to be so hard?' Arnav kept his distance from khushi – as much as could. Lavannya was right: Its hard to stay away from the only love of his life. She'd come to visit earlier today. She was shocked when he told her he'd given up on his love for khushi. She thought he was being stupid. They argued for quiet a long time. She kept convincing him to tell her he still loved her. Until khushi walked in and Lavannya left. But he couldn't. Perhaps it was too late to tell her he still loved her. No, no more diversions. It was time to do what he should've done long ago.. Face his responsibilities.

'I love you khushi, I always will but im sorry..'

I'm the first one. Just loved the update but really sad for arnav.

aww...thats so sad...why does he have to make a choice like that...she has always been there for him...why can't he just trust her
