Tu Jahan Main Wahan

Shilpa stood alone on the cross roads of the park, one arrow pointed towards Nightsbridge while the other Serpentine Lake. She knew the mood that she was in she was not ready to face the throng of people so she chose Serpentine Lake which was going to be deserted in this weather. The weather had turned chilly than the usual for London in September, even though the trees had not completely lost their color the bite in the wind proclaimed the start of Fall.

She walked briskly to the Lake as wind whipped her long hair around her face, she stopped and bundled them up under her cap and continued down the path that led to the lake. As she reached the lake she stood on the edge looking out at the water as the sun rays played across the water surface. She kept looking at the water hoping to find some peace and tranquility but six months of trying to lie to herself into thinking that she was fine and this is what she wanted she was tired. She was tired of going home to an empty apartment every night, of having to eat alone. Even the joy she had felt in her work initially had faded somewhere in these 6 months all she felt was the emptiness.

She closed her eyes as she felt the all familiar pain and realized that she had been a fool. 6 months ago she had it all a good job, a good life and an absolutely wonderful man who loved her. Even under the closed lids she felt the tears prick her eyes and she squeezed them tight. Her breath hitched as she still remembered the day they had gotten engaged. She had been so happy and armaan, her heart stopped as she thought about him. Armaan had been actually ecstatic, even though every one made fun of him he was unwilling to let go of shilpa's hand.

Shilpa opened her eyes as the memories were too much to handle, today was actually going to be there 6 month anniversary of their engagement. Shilpa started to walk again and looking around to distract herself but knew nothing was going to help. She had wrecked everything by her own hand and now she had to live this empty life. Right after their engagement shilpa had gotten a job offer from one of the designer houses from UK to work as their leading designer. Shilpa had jumped at the opportunity and had said yes even without thinking.

When she had told armaan he had been extremely happy and excited for her.

Armaan had hugged her: I'm so happy for you! When do you start?

Shilpa hugging him back: as soon as I take care of the visa and other regulations then I'm going to be heading to UK.

Armaan: so where is the job going to be based?

Shilpa rolling her eyes: armaan! Naturally in London where else?

Armaan confused: but shilpa! are you going to commute? I don't understand how it is going to work?

Shilpa confused: what do you mean?

Armaan perplexed: I mean we are going to get married in a couple of months! How are we going to make this work?

Shilpa: armaan! I've been waiting for this job like forever!

Armaan nodding his head: I understand shilpa! that's why I'm wondering how this is going to work!

Shilpa: I have to go to London armaan! The only we can be together is for you to come with me,

Armaan: but shilpa how is that possible! My business is here in India! I can't just get up and leave!

Shilpa getting impatient: what do you want armaan! That I let go of this opportunity! I have been waiting for this all my life.

Armaan getting impatient himself: what do you want me to say shilpa? that I'll leave everything and go with you its not that easy.

Shilpa angry and hurt: you know what armaan! If it had been you, you would've expected me to give up everything and go with you.

Armaan shocked: that's not true! Even now I'm asking you to think about how we are going to be together. I haven't asked you to give up anything.

Shilpa looking accusingly at him: but you are thinking about it!

Armaan threw up his hands in the air in exasperation: I don't know what I'm thinking!

Shilpa face hardened: let me help you then! I'm going to take this job armaan! If you love me and want to be with me then you'll support me otherwise we are over.

Armaan: I do support you! But the question is the logistics! How are we going to have a marriage if we live in two different countries.

Shilpa not relenting: maybe then we should rethink getting married.

Armaan felt the blood leave his face and he felt the world tilt: you can't be serious! You are going to call off the wedding over this!

Shilpa: armaan! This job is very important to me but you are somehow making me sound as if I'm demanding you to get me a stupid toy or something.

Armaan felt his anger spike: you are going to leave me over this stupid job.

Shilpa: no! you are the one who is letting go armaan! I want us to be together but I'm not going to let go of this opportunity also.

Armaan: then there is nothing else to say.

Shilpa closed her eyes against the pain in her chest as she recalled the memories. She had left for UK within a month or so, leaving behind armaan and hopes of a future with him. Initially the thrill of the new job and the city had kept her busy and enthralled. Her mother had called and asked to sort things out with armaan.

Mom: Shilpa! at least talk to him! Try and make a go of things.

Shilpa had remained stubbornly silent making her mother exclaim: he's not going to wait for you forever! As we speak his mother is looking for another girl for him.

Shilpa tried to breathe through the pain as she thought of armaan with some one else. Six months of burying herself in work, working day and night so as to not think of him but she gave up now.

She was tired of lying to herself that she was fine without him, that she didn't miss him, that every night when she went to bed she didn't dream about him. The truth was she was lost without him, there was not a single moment in the day or night that she didn't miss him. Her heart cried out for him but she knew that it was too late now, she had lost him b'coz of her own stupidity.

She continued to look out on the water hoping to find some solace in the lapping waves of the water against the edge of the lake.

tu jahaan main wahaan (shilpa swung around as her heart leapt thinking it was armaan, as she looked around she didn't find anyone, she closed her eyes against the pain)

Shilpa stood still willing herself to open her eyes and walk away when she heard…

sang sang yu chalu tere

jaise tera aasmaan (this time she ran towards the voice, her eyes searched the line of trees hoping to see the face of the man she was in love with, she stopped her eyes glued to a tree from where she could hear the voice coming from)

jaise tera aasmaan(armaan at the last moment stepped out from behind the tree shilpa stood as if frozen to the spot unable to believe what her eyes were showing her)

Her eyes took in his hair ruffled by the wind, he had his hands stuffed inside his jackets pocket as he stood looking at her. Without her conscious knowledge shilpa's feet started moving towards him. Shilpa felt a shiver run down her back and her hands inside her jacket pocket had turned to ice, she walked as if in a daze not taking her eyes away from armaan's face. Just as she was less than a foot away from him a beam of sunlight managed to break through the leaves of the trees and fell across shilpa's eyes. Shilpa threw up a hand to shield her eyes as her eyes recoiled.

jo dhup nikli chaya ban jaaunga (immediately armaan stood infront of her effectively blocking the sunlight)

jo ho tu akeli saaya ban jaaunga(he grabbed shilpa's hand pulling her forward towards him)

jo uljhan mein ho mann main behlaaunga(shilpa's troubled eyes never left his face, looking into them armaan lightly touched her cheek with his warm hands)

Shilpa closed her eyes against his touch, his lone touch had spread warmth through her shivering body warming her heart. She opened her eyes and looked into his beloved face ..

tum aa gaye ho toh jeena aaya hain(she raised her hand and hesitantly touched his face as if to confirm that he was real)

khushiya ka tumne yeh jaal bichaya hain

khoya hain khudko yah sab kutch paaya hain(armaan cradled her hand against his cheek as he closed his eyes against her touch, making her smile)

tu jahaan main wahaan(again armaan pulled her nearer as he lowered his forehead to her and stood with his arms around her waist)

sang sang yu chalu tere

jaise tera aasmaan

Shilpa didn't want to let go, somehow without her realizing her eyes had filled with tears. She tried controlling them but they kept flowing. She drew in a breath trying to control sobs that wracked her slight frame. Armaan had his arms around her as he murmured sooting words to her. Shilpa tightened her arms around him unwilling to let go.

ho gam ke badal mujhpe tham jaane de

bechainiyo ko mujhse takrane de

dukhti ho koi baat mujhpe aane de(armaan finally managed to drew her face up from his chest and managed to wipe tears away from her cheeks)

Shilpa drew in a shuddering breath and clasped his hand to her chest…

dil sochta tha ke koi apna ho

koi raaz na ho jo uss se rakhna ho (thinking of all days and nights she had wished he would be with her so that she could share the days events with him. Her success and failures)

aankhein na kholu main shayad sapna ho(she raised his hand to her cheek and closed her eyes, squeezing them tight as she was scared)

Armaan tilted her head up urging her to open her eyes and look at him, shilpa drew her lids up and silently looking at him. For a moment it felt as if they could look into each others souls.

sang sang yu chalu tere

jaise tera aasmaan (armaan drew her in his arms and kissed her like there was no tomorrow.)

Later both were in shilpa's apartment when shilpa tried to apologize: I'm sorry armaan!

Armaan shook his head: don't be sorry shilpa!

Shilpa felt her breath hitch again but she forced herself to continue: no! I am sorry armaan! I love you but I ruined everything! I called off the wedding and I left you to come here.

Armaan: I didn't exactly stop you! Shilpa! both of us are to blame here!

Shilpa: I don't want to blame you armaan! It's been (she stopped unable to go on)

Armaan saw her struggle against her emotions and something inside him loosened: I don't want you to apologize to me again. I want to ear only one thing from you.

Shilpa looked up at him questioningly, armaan looked at her his heart thudding painfully: do you love me?

Shilpa felt herself tremble as she looked at the intensity in his eyes: more than life!

If possible his eyes turned more intense: did you miss me?

Shilpa made a sound between a sob and a laugh: miss you! Its been hell!(she shook her head) I don't know how to live without you.

Armaan drew her to him: then nothing else matters!

Shilpa: but armaan!

Armaan placed a finger against her lips: we'll figure it out! Together! Plus tu jahan mein wahan!

2 years later

Armaan woke up to the sound of door being opened and closed, the scrape of a stool which propelled him out of the bed and do a full sprint down the stairs and into the kitchen. He reached in time to see shilpa dragging the stool to the shelf of drawers.

Armaan: what do you think you are doing?

Shilpa turned around her hair falling like a waterfall around her shoulders. She looked guiltily towards the stool and then at armaan: I was looking for something to eat!

She rubbed a hand against her 7 months pregnant distended belly, she looked up from under her lashes at armaan to see how angry he was. Armaan shook his head and walked forward to push the stool back to where it belonged.

Armaan: what are you looking for? Tell me!

Shilpa: I don't know!(she looked down at the floor and frowned as she was unable to see her feet b'coz of her huge stomach.)

Armaan raised his brow in surprise: why? No more chocolate ice cream!

Shilpa sighed heavily: its finished!

Armaan frowned: but I bought a pint before coming home (when shilpa didn't move he opened the freezer and saw the pint of ice cream) here its is.

Shilpa: no! its chocolate chip!

Armaan: yes so!

Shilpa sighed heavily: I want Belgian dark chocolate!

Armaan rubbing hand over his unshaven jaw: is there a difference?

Shilpa chewed at her lips, rubbing a hand over her stomach and then looked over at armaan who looked rumpled and sleepy: the baby thinks so! (she answered apologetically)

Armaan sighed heavily and went out of the kitchen, he came back after a few minutes wearing a t-shirt and sweats jiggling keys: come on! Lets go!

Shilpa: armaan! It'll wait till morning! Come on lets just go to bed!

Armaan gathered her close to him: you know you won't be able to sleep like this! Plus I don't want my baby to go to sleep hungry. So lets go, something must be open at this hour!

They roamed the streets of dubai, hoping to see some store open but without any luck. All the huge malls had also closed for the day, tired armaan stopped at a traffic light.

Shilpa: armaan! Lets just go home I'm tired!

Armaan: wait! Just another stop if nothing then we'll go home.

He drove Sheraton Deira Resort, there he checked Shilpa and himself into a room. Once they were in the room he quickly dialed the room service and ordered three individual servings of Belgian chocolate ice cream.

In the next 15 minutes shilpa had finished her huge helping of Belgian chocolate ice cream and was gorging the second one. Armaan sat across from her and enjoyed his own helping, smiling indulgently at her.

Once done shilpa looked up at armaan: thanks! That was awesome!(smiling hugely)

Armaan grinned at her, he stood up pulling her up gently: now time for bed(pushing her towards the bed)

Shilpa: are we going to stay the night?

Armaan: most definitely! Now go to sleep or are you going to take the day off?

Shilpa: no! the new collection is coming together wonderfully! I'll take a day off when entire collection is done. The maternity line is going to wow everyone.

Armaan lying down on the bed beside shilpa: I know you are going to wow everyone!

Shilpa wiggled on the bed trying to get comfortable, armaan started to rub circle on her stomach: armaan! Thanx for everything!

Armaan: haven't I told you before together we can do anything! Waise bhi tu jahan mein wahan!
