Part 25:
When Mayank came back home, he had a bouquet of flower in his hands. As Nupur opened the door and saw Nupur looking at it mesmerized, he learned one thing, which he realized he must have known already, that women loved flowers for the reason best known to them, thank you very much, but it sure did bring a beautiful smile to her face.
He wanted to tell, her smile was much more beautiful than those flowers can ever manage to look, but whoever had coined the word cliched had done it rightly so, he realized he was being cliched in his mind a lot these days when it came to Nupur. Whatever had happened to The Mayank Sharma who earlier never ever got the idea of what good such lines ever did? But why did he see her smile shrinking back?
Nupur was so amazed to open the door and find Mayank standing there with the bouquet in his hand. Like it must be an april fools' day and she would soon be laughed at for dreaming so. But, nevertheless, the flowers were as beautiful as they always are, freshly spreading its sweet scent all around and triggering the soothing feeling to eyes and mind just right. When she realized she was supposed to give Mayank some room to enter the house and before she moved back she saw the little note written over a small piece of paper tucked between flowers, which read 'With Best Compliments…..To Mr. & Mrs. Mayank Sharma'
There she realized it was for them both and not from Mayank to her. What was wrong enough with her to think so anyways? It indeed was a fool's day for her probably. As she felt what she did, a mixture of little anger and little realization, she saw her smile leave her too when she again forced a smile when she greeted Mayank 'Hi!' and let him in finally.
Mayank said, "Hi Nupur! " and handed her the flowers thinking of getting that smile back on her face. But she took the flowers and kept it aside on the centre table and asked, "Kisne diye?"
Mayank replied back, "Woh mere office mein yeh ritual hai, our Boss arranges for these small tokens of wishes agar kissi employee ka birthday ho ya marriage since he nevr attended those personally"
Nupur nodded and said, "Oh achcha" as she got her answer.
When Mayank couldn't resist more, he asked, "Kyun tum pehle isse dekh kar muskuraayi aur phir aisa face bana liya? Kya hua?" with his stern-ness right in place.
Nupur winced internally that he noticed it. Really, now, he had to notice this out of all of her expressions? She replied back, "Umm kuch nahi Mayank…achche lage par phir sochne lagi ki ab achanak yeh kisne diye?" She wanted to know what was wrong with her all of a sudden, why these expectations out of the blue?
Mayank was not convinced; however he left the topic then and there and went in to freshen up.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nupur smiled at Mayank brightly and said, as he sat down for some snacks, "Lagta hai aaj tumhe office mein koi kaam nahi tha…tum itne fresh jo lag rahe ho" in order to break the ice.
The truth was Mayank had managed to miss Nupur, mind you just a little is how much he would admit, even in such a short while. He had chided himself then 'Dude, she is new in your life, its not that you are already habituated to her, I mean its been only a few good hours that she is not around you, stop behaving stupid' while he remembered someone famous' words 'Relax, focus and concentrate' to help himself and then he had slogged for meeting his new deadlines which he always loved to chase.
He absolutely loved being busy, challenged and set to thinking over tricky situations and his job paid good for it too. So he was more than happy to be working all immersed usually, except for a moment like he had just remembered.
He replied back in a straight-forward tone which said nobody-tries-to-tease-Mayank Sharma, "Jee nahi, I am afraid aisa nahi tha, mujhe waise bina kaam kiye jyada khushi nahi milti...unlike you I guess"
Nupur glared at him, she always knew he always had a bad impression of her when it came to worthy things like these. Why did all fall upside down whenever she talked to him? It was like she hardly knew to speak wise with him around, but well that was not at all true and she wouldn't give up on an argument ever, not the Nupur Bhushan she was who would, well, ya Nupur Sharma, right!
Nupur replied smiling, trying to be as witty and stylish as Mayank was, even when casual, "Waise aapka guess galat bhi toh ho sakta hai…I mean yahan toh hai…shayad aap mujhe jaante hi nahi ab tak, na?"
Mayank matched her smile and asked not being as stern as he always was, almost welcoming,"Really?"
Nupur replied with a matter-of-factly-smile, "Um-hmm!!!"
Mayank smiled back and asked over-estimating his judgement, "Mujhe toh laga ki you are an open book, nahi?"
Nupur asked, trying to maintain her stance the way she had started but failing a bit under his penetrating eyes and his ways now, "Aur?"
As Mayank moved forward to answer, she automatically shifted back in her position trying to maintain her expression while Mayank said, "Aur mujhe lagta hai ki shayad tum...stove par kuch rakh kar aayi ho aur woh jal raha hai…"
Amidst all this Nupur had completely forgotten that she was trying to make some sweet corn dish which now smelled of being neglected by her.
Leaving all her trance behind she ran away to the kitchen wondering if it was really Mayank she was talking to who had talked the way he had done just now, to double check she peeped out of the kitchen door and Mayank looked back just in time to catch her and smirked at the look on her face and she glared. Then she peeled her eyes off his eyes and got back to work, trying to save her curious try at cooking. Again after mustering all her confidence and partly succeeding in it too, she had again gone wrong in front of him. She wondered if it may ever end for her?
As she came back to Mayank, so did Shilpa Sharma come back and that conversation was left incomplete between the two, she wondered if there was anything more left to it?
Mayank just loved to see her ways of being as confident as ever in front of him, trying to prove herself to him in ways, when she didn't need to. He loved her expressions travelling miles for such simple matters as being forgetful. Well, it told him that he affected her, maybe more than he thought he did and that was a good thing considering how much she affected him already!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nupur wanted to thank Mayank for the sharing his blanket with her but didn't know if he had done it or she had herself granted her own self that, so she decided to skip that for now. Besides, she didn't want to thank him now, now that he had tried to play smart with her in the evening.
When she was arranging some of her stuff, Mayank came from behind and helped her make some some space for herself by keeping aside her big paintings which she had brought along. He looked at it amazed he didn't know she liked paintings too.
Picking up one of those, he asked looking at a painting which had blissful place, true scenic beauty, and there few kids were laughing and playing some game with stones. He assumed it depicted togetherness, happiness and peaceful things in life.
Nupur saw him looking at it keenly when she asked, "Achchi hai naa painting….yeh naa meri Ma ne kharidi thi….jab main choti thi, mere room ke liye…isliye yeh mere liye aur bhi special hai" and she smiled remembering her Mother. She only had slight memories of her mother, probably that is why she was able to forget having one, quicker than her father was worried. She had tried to completely regain her joys from the family she always saw…her Bauji, her sister Gunjan, her Bui and Fufa(Bui's husband) and their daughter Chinky.
Though she missed her Mother still but always tried to hear stories about her for fulfilling her desires to know her and meet her rather than showing her sadness to anyone as such about it. She took pride in knowing that her mother was the way she was, inspiring in all senses.
Mayank felt a knot in his throat at her words, she had accepted it so gracefully when he still was not able to completely come over the fact that his father was not there. It had truly changed him completely. That seriousness tried to grip him yet again. In these days, lately, he had started to almost adjust back to his life, trying to take things normally the way he should, keeping aside his stubborn seriousness and the empty feeling that he had managed to carry for so long in the shadow of responsibilities.
He smiled back at her smile, praying her smile never gets a shadow of any such sorrow ever now that she had managed so far so good.
He just smiled looking at her with deep thoughts running in his head and stooping down to her level, he looked at the painting in his hand and at her, realizing how she glowed at the mere thought of having it with her, a prized possession for her.
Nupur suddenly realized his smile to her, the one she searched for always and rarely, but yes, she found it, just like today. It was great he didn't think it was silly to have been saving her Mother's asset with her. His smile told her that he didn't think so. Nupur smiled back at his acknowledgement, and this smile was meant for his gesture, ofcourse, apart from how good it felt to witness and be able capture that pleasingly adorable dimpled smile of his.
Mayank asked, "Yeh sach mein beautiful hai" he didn't know much about the minute details of paintings and stuff but he know for the fact that Nupur's bond with it made it seem a classic to him.
Nupur was only glad, "Haina?"
Mayank nodded affirmatively.
Then she saw him get up and ask standing near a wall and ask, "Yeh yahan theek rahega?"
Nupur was pleasantly surprised at his suggestion. It suddenly made her realize that - yes; she was sitting with her husband there in her home, in her room on which she had some right on too. See that was the biggest problem with Mayank, he did all that to make her feel incomplete and confused about herself and then came all over again and made her feel special, just like that!
She shaked her head in a 'yes' with all the excitement of a child and saw some knot in her mind loosen up that certainly made her feel joyful. What was it about Mayank that was suddenly affecting even her momentary moods? Right now, it made her feel very good and special.
She walked up to a smiling Mayank and held the piece of art on the wall to conclude her anxiousness while he helped her hold it there and said, "Perfect naa?"
She could just leave out a, "Thanks Mayank!" from her mouth.
Mayank didn't want the formality now, not with her but judging what it meant to her he said, "No problem…kal I'll fix it up here"
Nupur moved ahead, suddenly and gave him a quick hug. It meant gratitude and respect for him, but when something started to make her fluster in his arms that she had to pull out of that quick and she left for her initial position beside her stuffs saying, "Achcha, ab mujhe aur bhi bahut kuch set karna hai" tucking her locks behind her ear and looking at those stuffs concentrating.
Mayank was happy that she was slowly adjusting to him and accepting him, just the way he wanted, when he realized this was the first time he was voicing it to himself that he wanted her accepting him and knew it well, that he had from sometime already accepted her.
It was not until Nupur had come up to him, a bit skeptical, that Mayank remembered yesterday's events.
She asked, "Mayank, kal woh blanket…." She left her sentence half because she yet didn't know if it was his help or her grant.
Mayank expressed a bit caught-off expression, and blew some air before he spoke, "Hmm…ya, tumhe thand lag rahi thi toh maine socha….well, tum uske baad peacefully so gayi thi Nupur"
Finally she knew it was him, as she had wanted It.'Phew' for all her mounted up stress.
She replied back, "Thank you" yet again. She realized she was thanking him a bit too much to him today. Not she, if one knew her clearly.
Mayank finally said, "Not to mention Nupur" wondering that she didn't get offended by his deed. When he added, "Tum chaho toh tum woh rakh sakti ho"
She asked quickly, "Aur tum?"
He asked, "Main?" He wasn't sure if she was still the girl who would not be comfortable if he reasoned to share it.
She raised her eye-brows repeating her question with them again, as to what will he use then?
He replied back, unsure, "I'll manage"
He did that again to her, made her feel like someone not close enough to share his thoughts with. Managing for her in his very house? She asked back quickly, "Kya manage kar lo ge?" She wondered if he'll not have any for himself. She could offer her own to him or he'll have one from his Ma, in case not that.
Well who was she kidding? Did she want that? She could share it with him. Trust was never the matter with her as far as he was concerned, but this was something different here.
She waited for his reply crossing her arms while he replied bluntly for once, suddenly feeling a bit suffocated with this formal behavior of his that he was not always used to but had taken to it for Nupur, for many a reasons, leaving that behind for a while he changed his wish, "That is big enough for Us both Nupur, toh agar tumhe odd naa lage toh main bhi wahi use kar lunga" and realizing at the back of his mind that it was him who'll feel odd and not her, for his stupid urges these days but kicking that thought out he stayed as calm as ever when she stared a bit with surprise and said, "Nahi…mujhe kyun odd lagega" while feeling every bit of her statement as lie as she felt goosebumps realizing his meaning and feeling fixed in her spot for having managed those words.
Mayank saw her face go pale as she spoke those words, he wondered if she trusted him or not? Well, weren't they mature enough to take things smoothly ahead and stop ignoring all these formalities and ignorance, he learned as he thought.
