Part 15:

Nupur's Bauji saw smiling at Mayank and Mayank had to forward himself to touch his feet on his Ma's indication. He felt odd, Nupur had never touched his Ma's feet, he realized and he also realized what was happening in reality.

Shashi Bhushan gave him blessing by keeping his hand on his head and said, "Arrey, Khush raho Beta, aur yeh sab chodo. Mujhe pata nahi tha ki tum mujhse milna chhoge ya nahi, isliye maine Lata se phone karwa diya tha"

Mayank looked confused and then he realized that Lata was Nupur's Bui and Nupur's Bauji still thought that he was her reference.

He nodded his head to say 'No problem' and smiled. He felt very nervous meeting Nupur's Bauji. Strangely seriously nervous. Was he supposed to behave good and deny by God-knows what reason? Or was he supposed to be rude and deny out right? Or was he supposed to deny? He couldn't figure out just anything while he sat nervously silent in from of him in his own house as if in a new place while his Mom did away with the formalities of tea and snacks.

Shashi Bhushan asked feeling a little low to state what he wanted to, "Mayank, tum jaante ho ke main yahan kyun aaya hoon? Kya tumhe sach mein lagta hai ki Nupur tumhare liye theek nahi hai?"

There you go! When Mayank had refrained from asking this question to himself for so long in-spite of feeling the various feelings that he did, here her Dad was asking him what he was NOT supposed to, thereby arousing his stomach into somersaults.

He didn't know how to react while he looked at his Ma for some help and in response she went in to bring some more sweets.

Mayank replied totally unsure, trying to take advantage of his ever confident voice and its stability, "Dekhiye Bauji, aisi baat nahi hai" He realized how he was not at all himself today when he had managed to address Nupur's Bauji as Bauji, and for what? Maybe plainly coz he was witnessing this scenario for the first time in his life, he wondered.

Bauji looked for his further words expectantly and he had to continue, "Woh Nupur Morena se hai, aur main Mumbai se…mera matlab hum mein kuch bhi toh common nahi hai" Mayank wondered how he had thought through this. Utter rubbish he realized.

Bauji replied back, "Par Beta, woh Morena ki zaroor hai par dakiya noosi (orthodox) soch wali nahi hai. Modern hai, naye chalan(practices) ko samajhti hai aur woh bhi purane tehzeebon ka khayal rakhte hue. Tum usse jaante nahi naa isliye aisa soch rahe ho. Jaan jaoge toh saara shak dur ho jayega" Mayank realized how his hindi was going a little high for him, though he caught the meaning of it all quite easily.

But, he didn't know what was he supposed to reply back. Hadn't her Bui mentioned Nupur and Mayank meeting ever, though Nupur had told it all to her Bui? May be because her family was orthodox and wouldn't appreciate that. But hey, he knew Nupur and he also knew how she was not a complete small town girl by being progressive in her thoughts and her look-out for life and still traditional. He realized that him listening to all this and thinking over it wasn't exactly helping him. He felt more and more sure of the inevitable.

He replied back after some thought, "Nahi Bauji, I am sure ki aap keh rahe hain toh woh achchi hi hogi par… "

Bauji asked promptly, "Par kya?"

Mayank didn't want to do this even in the least, "Par mujhe nahi lagta ki hamari nibhegi Bauji" and he realized using more Hindi today that he was used to. The person you are talking to matters a lot.

Shilpa Sharma came back and sat beside Mayank, not at all helping him and showing him a smile which said, 'I trust you for you can manage things'

Bauji replied back, "Mayank, koi bhi rishta mann mein thaan lo toh apne aap nibh jaata hai, bas usse apnana padta hai…warna koi bhi rishta aasani se toot sakta hai"

That's it, one more argument on his side and he would give in because however clich' her Bauji's words sounded, but he realized that's what his arguments to himself demanded.

He tried again now halfheartedly, "Baat toh aapki sahi hai Bauji par, vichaar milna bhi toh zaroori hai naa" He missed meeting Shilpa's gaze for she may realize his condition when speaking of her coz he never gave in to anyone so easily and nervously as he did now and also his gratitude towards him spoke volumes.

Bauji replied back, "Beta, tum samajhdar ho…aur main jaanta hoon ki vichaar milna bhi zaroori hai, par hum aise logon ka sahara dhundte hain hamesha jo hamein hamare vichaaron se pare(different) soch kar bhi hamare saath khada ho sake…aur Nupur ne agar ek baar thaan li toh woh har haal mein tumhara saath nibhayegi, main vaada karta hoon "

A few more arguments and a few more counter arguments and everytime, Mayank getting weaker, not in words but in thoughts. Thoughts that were growing captive to him. But one thing he maintained was that he hadn't pointed out a single fault of Nupur. Why had she thought he would anyways? It was not he was against her or something, of all the people. It was his natural reaction to her. She needed to understand him better.

And he had nailed it, Mayank didn't know what happened and how but for once he spoke before his mind could judge his actions anymore, "Theek hai Bauji, toh phir main yeh…" and he looked at his Ma who understood his gaze exactly and said, "Bhai saab, Sweets lijiye…ab aapki beti hamari hone wali hai"

He couldn't decide if he had made his life more easy or more difficult?

Her Bui had just talked on the phone to Nupur's Bauji and had confusingly replied, "Achcha Bhaiya! Haan keh di Mayank ne?" and the changing her tone to Shashi Bhushan, "Oh achcha, haan keh di Mayank ne!...o haan haan yeh toh achchi baat hai.." and continued, "Woh toh aapki awaaz se hi spasht ho raha hai Bhaiya ki aapckitne khush hain…Nupur?" she turned back to look back at Nupur at sudden realization and saw her almost frozen in shock and replied, "Haan, Nupur bhi khush hai…aap jaldi aa jaiye Bhaiya…aage ki baat phir karenge" and she kept the phone down and came by quickly to attend to Nupur.

Feeling a little better, he felt a little less freaked out from what he was feeling a while ago.
