After she slowed her heart rate back to normal she replied "Good morning."
He slid into the seat next to her and watched as she fractically scribbled something down. As soon as she finished, she stretched her hand to get the cramp out and turned to him. She just opened her mouth when the teacher walked in.
"Good morning Mr. Singhania." The class shouted.
"Ah, good morning class." Mr. Singhania replied. He sat down at his desk. "Just let me take attendance and we'll continue with yesterday's lesson."
Mr. Arjun Singhania was the chemistry teacher and the coolest teacher in the school. He always interacted in a friendly manner and tried to make the lessons more interesting for the class either by telling jokes or playing games. The only thing he couldn't stand was incompletion of homework and late assignments. Otherwise, he was every student's favourite teacher at St. Xavier's High.
"Arohi Ahluwalia?" Mr. Singhania called.
"Present sir." A girl waved from the back of the classroom.
"Nupur Bhushan?" No reply.
"Nupur?" The teacher repeated.
"Nupur." She whispered behind her. She shot darts at Mayank to help her. "Kuch karo na!"
"Nupur." Mayank, Nupur's boyfriend called. He shook her gently and she began to stir.
"Huh?" Nupur wiped her eyes and looked up. She saw the entire class and Mr. Singhania staring at her.
"Woh...sorry Mr. Singhania. I was up late finishing an assignment and I just...I lost track of time. I'm really sorry sir." Nupur finished.
"Nupur, relax. It happens. Just try to stay awake for the rest of my class and get some sleep when you get home okay? Mayank, Geet, I'm putting both of you in charge. Take care of her."
"Sure sir." She called out.
"Absolutely." Mayank chimed in.
"Good, now continuing on. Anjali Gupta?"
"Present sir."
"Riddhima Gupta?"
"Present sir."
"Geet?" He called out from next to her.
Geet turned to the side.
"Geet Khurana? Oh yes, I just spoke with you. Mr. Maan Singh Khurana?"
"Present sir." He called out before turning back to Geet. "I have to talk to you."
"Not now, Mr. Singhania is about to start his lesson." She turned to face the board.
"Geet, its important!"
Geet glared at him. "Kaha na not now!"
Maan slumped back into his chair in defeat and tried to focus on the lesson. He was planning to catch up with Geet after class but she had already rushed to Math and he had to go to English. On opposite sides of the school.
As soon as the bell rang for lunch, Maan rushed to the locker they both shared by the library. He only found Nupur.
"Nupur, where's Geet?" Maan asked.
"You just missed her. She just left for the cafeteria. She'll be back in a second, what's up?"
"Nothing..." Maan sat down next to Nupur.
"Come on, there is something. Otherwise you wouldn't be rushing to meet Geet like this."
"Okay there is." Maan admit. "But I'll tell you when Geet comes back. By the way, where's Mayank?"
"Oh, he just left to greet Samrat. Apparently he's back early. two of the teams couldn't make it to the tournament."
"Are they going to meet us here?"
"Yup, any second." Nupur replied.
Mayank suddenly appeared with Samrat by his side.
"Samrat." Maan got up. He shook his hand then gave him a hug.
"Maan, yaar! I've missed you guys!" Samrat smiled.
"But not us girls?" Nupur stood up and put her hands on her hips.
"Of course!" He engulfed Nupur in a hug.
He looked around then turned to Maan. "Where's the wife?"
"Yaar puccho hi maat"
"Hey!" A voice called from behind them. "I heard that!"
Geet swatted Maan on the arm and gave Samrat a hug.
"How was the basketball tournament in Switzerland?" Geet took a step back.
"Cold actually." Samrat joked. "But it was awesome! I can't believe that we were won of the teams invited and we WON!"
Everyone cheered.
"It was truly amazing guys." He said as everyone sat down.
"Maan?" Nupur called out. "Wasn't there something you wanted to say?"
"Yes Nupur, thanks. I wanted to say that I finally got my acceptance letter from Western last night!"
Western was the most prestigous business school in all of India and Maan's dream to attend.
Geet and Nupur gave him a hug as he was sitting in the middle. Samrat and Mayank reached out to pat him.
"Wait guys, there's more. A letter for Geet also came yesterday too! She got accepted into Medix!" Medix was the school that Geet had always wanted to attend. She wanted to become a surgeon and save lives.
Mayank had already gotten into a school for engineering and Samrat had gotten a basketball scholarship. Nupur had been accepted as well into a school for psycology. When everyone had teased her for wanting to become a psycologist, her reasoning was that who could understand a pagal more than a pagal?
"Congratulations guys!" Nupur shouted as she reached over to hug Geet too. "Now we've all gotten into the university of our choice."
Neither of them knew how time had flown by so quickly but the warning bell had already rung while they were in the midst of their chatter.
Nupur Bhushan and Geet Khurana had been best friends since childhood. Their moms had gone to university together so they grew up as sisters. Nupur's family had especially grown close to Geet when Geet's parents had died in a crash while she was in grade 5, Geet was only 10 years old. Although Geet was lucky to have her two twin brothers to take care of her. They were both 24, finishing university at the time.
Geet Khurana's two older brothers were Brij and Tej Handa. Geet's strict older brother Brij married Naintara Khurana when she was 13. Tej, who is younger to Brij by 4 minutes, married Pammi when Geet was 14. Naintara and Pammi are complete opposites.
Naintara is stuck up and rude, always showing people down while Pammi is gentle and kind, always wanting to help others. Pammi has always been there for Geet as an older sister. Especially when Geet and Maan had gotten married last year.
Brij and Naintara had completely rejected Maan's proposal saying that Maan and Geet were only children. Tej and Pammi had also disapproved at first but had spent enough time with Maan to understand that his love was true.
They had agreed to the marriage knowing that Maan and Geet had no one else to turn to and teamed up with Maan's Dadi, Savitri Khurana. The hard part was getting Brij to agree. Eventually he did agree with the condition that Geet would move into Maan's house after high school and they both had agreed. Naintara still didn't approve of Maan and Geet's marriage.
Maan Singh Khurana met Samrat Shergill in elementary school and had been friends ever since. Although Samrat had always been a goofball and Maan more serious, they still complimented each other. Samrat had played on Dehli's basketball team with Mayank Sharma and Samrat introduced Maan to Mayank in grade 9.
Maan and Geet on the other hand, had also met in grade 9 when they were announced as partners in Drama class. They both hated Drama but it was a mandatory class in grade 9. They both fell in love with each other over the course of the semester and often met during lunch, bringing their friends with them. Mayank and Nupur had grown to like each other after several months of fighting but Samrat was left alone and often teased for it. He never did mind being the only one who was not in a relationship, the love of his life had always been basketball.
"Guys! It's time to go, hurry up!" Samrat called. Maan gave Geet a hug and Nupur reached up on her toes to give Mayank a kiss.
"God guys!" Samrat turned around. "You show more PDA than Mr. and Mrs. Khurana over there."
Mayank and Nupur both pushed him without breaking the kiss while Geet and Maan laughed from a couple of lockers down.
"I'll see you tonight then?" Maan asked with his arms trapping Geet against their locker. They would often get together in the evening to study and finish their homework at Maan's house. Savitri was always delighted to have Geet around.
"I guess so." Geet smiled.
Geet turned to get her books out of her locker and Maan put one arm around her waist while getting his books off the top shelf with the other.
He kissed the top of her head and tore himself away from her before they were late for class.
When Geet finally turned around, Maan was already down the hall. Geet waved and Maan smiled before disappearing out the door.
