Chapter 24: The aftermath
Dear Iman,
I don't know what to do,
Where to go,
Or how to survive.
Geet.
PRESENT:
But just as she took a sip of orange juice Vicky's voice cut across. "So'I saw Maan bhai come out of your room this morning."
Geet just spat out the drink in surprise.
Vicky didn't say a word. Indeed he wasn't the talkative type, instead he had always used silence to get information out of people. Usually a look was enough to get secrets out of people.
So he just raised an eyebrow in reaction and despite everything that fondly reminded Geet of Iman. He would quirk that eyebrow exactly the same way, with the same twist of his lips whenever he thought she was acting insane or about to get him in trouble.
But just as quickly she held the memories, she shoved them aside and instead she was angered at herself for the innate weakness he brought out of her. In that anger she blurted out to Vicky, "It's none of your business who comes out of my room." The moment that the words came out, she wanted to bite her tongue. They were too defensive and Vicky hardly seemed like the type to let it go.
"Oh'very defensive." Vicky grinned back, enjoying this conversation more than he probably should.
"Well someone probably has no life, which is why they are nosing in to my issues." Geet retorted back.
"Touche! Sorry Mademoiselle for the annoyance." He gave a dramatic bow while pretending to be repentant. "Your humble servant truly regrets his actions."
This time Geet couldn't keep the smile off her face at his dramatics. "Okay that's enough! You put every B grade drama queen to shame."
"That's the aim" He gave a wink at her.
"So'What do you do for a living?" Geet tried to keep the conversation, as well as being quite curious about this Khurana man. While Dev was the more sensitive and laid back guy, and Maan was the intense but straightforward type, Vicky was harder to pin down. Geet was usually a good judge of character and in her mind something about Vicky screamed out that there was more to him than appearances.
"Hmmm...curious?" Vicky hedged the question. "Do I intrigue you Dr Handa?"
"Pfft'.dream on." Geet muttered under her breath. "I better go back to my daughter."
"Adios."
Just then Seb came into the dining room, interrupting their conversation.
"Hey Seb! Where is Mel?" Geet questioned Seb.
"Oh she is with Dev's brother in his study." Seb answered innocently, while Geet was panicked by the words.
CRAP! Mel is with Maan?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was something special playing with a child as there was no limits to their imagination. The simplest things could bring the biggest pleasures for them and ideas flowed freely.
For the last hour Maan had been having a great time with Meliara while they played games with each other. As he played with her a lot of his stress seeped out for there was nothing more relaxing then forgetting about the world while playing.
Currently he was on the floor on his hands and legs acting as a horse. While Maan was secretly enjoying himself he would rather die than let anyone else find out what was happening. After all Maan Singh Khurana was the last person anyone could imagine acting as a horse.
Oh God I can just imagine the look on the faces of the Board members of Khurana Industries if they ever see me like this!
"Giddy up horsey!" Mel screamed out while she was saddled on Maan's back. She was pulling on Maan's hair, pretending that they were the reins and kicking him with her heels of her feet. "Faster horsey, we need to catch up to the bandit."
Maan started to trot faster in response to her, while trying to control his laughter at her antics. Mel pretended to shoot at invisible bandits in the room with her fake gun. But his amusement was cut short as the door was flung open by an angry and confused Geet.
Geet's jaw dropped in surprise as she saw Maan on the floor on his hands and feet with Mel on his back. But the most surprising part was the fact that Mel looked so happy with him. That was the last thing that she had ever expected to see.
"Mama!" Mel screamed out delighted to see her mother there. "Look Mama I am playing Bandits with knight?"
"Knight?" Geet coughed out in confusion.
"Yes this is my Knight!" Mel said excitedly while she still clung onto Maan's neck as he stood up while still holding her in his arms.
But Geet could hardly pay attention to anything at that moment as she stared at the two. All she could think was that this was a mockery of the dreams she once thirsted after.
Iman, her baby and her all together in their own house. Their perfect little family. Iman playing with their child, while she stood watching them and smiling.
Those were the dreams that she had weaved in her mind during the darkest period of her life, yet all those webs had broken that fateful day when she had understood the cost of her life. And the effect of broken dreams had changed her in a way that she had never thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAST:
Geet sat next to Nonna on the dining table, silent while everyone around her was chattering madly. She consumed with thoughts of the mess that her life was in and feeling of helplessness flooded through her.
Rahul was absolutely livid at the fact that his baby sister was pregnant. While he was frustrated at Geet, his anger was towards the idiot who had gotten her pregnant. The worst part was the fact that Geet claimed not to know the guy's name.
"You are a medical student! Fine sleep with a guy'I can't stop you from doing that even though I am your older brother. But at least use protection!" Rahul ranted.
"Shut up Rahul!" Lily immediately jumped to Geet's defence. "Life isn't always that simple or easy."
But Rahul's words reverberated through Geet's mind because he was saying the truth. As a medical student and future doctor she knew the importance of contraception. And the truth was that they had used protection. But somehow she had been that small percentage who was unlucky and it had failed. She didn't want to explain all this to her friends because what was the point.
"Look why don't we talk to your parents and try to calm them down." Meera asked Geet softly. She was always the gentle peacemaker, unwilling to see any strife.
But her idea was quickly brought down by Geet who finally spoke. "No. I am not going to go back to my parents like that. They made a decision and I am going to respect that."
"But Geet what are you going to do? Where are you going to stay?" Seb said trying to make Geet face reality. "You have to move out of dorm because you won't be able to pay for that. Not to mention the fact that you need money for day to day things like food."
"She can stay with us." Lily chipped in.
"No Lil..She can't stay with you guys." Dev argued. "You guys live in a one room apartment and Lily is pregnant as well. Meera and Seb live at dorms. It'll be better is she stays with me."
"But Dev she is my sister and -" Rahul tried to argue back but Dev wasn't having any of that.
"What the hell Rahul? She is your sister and she isn't anything to me?" Dev was really pissed off now. "Look I am not going to listen to any of your bull. I live all by myself in a three bed apartment which could easily house six people. So why is there any problem with her living with me."
"Look'even though we live and were born her there are issues with an unmarried girl living with a guy." Meera tried to make Dev understand
"Fine I get your point but there is a solution for that as well. You move in with us. That way we can both help her." Dev seemed quite pleased with his idea.
"Ummm'but-" Meera on the otherhand was quite flustered with the idea.
"I actually think that is a great idea" Seb supported Dev. "Meer it'll be easy for you as well because Dev's place is quite close to the hospital."
"Fine." Meera sighed, resigned to the idea because she would do anything for Geet.
Nonna turned to Geet. "Bella are you okay with this idea?"
Geet just turned to her, not even sure what was being said and gave a negligent nod.
And so Geet's future had been decided by her friends without a single input from her.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Present:
To see the shadow of her dreams come alive both softened her and stabbed her heart. It was almost too sweet to bear and to bitter to tolerate. But she pushed those weakening feelings aside, for she couldn't and wouldn't let him get back into her broken heart.
Why are you with Mel? She is only mine! The child we were meant to have no longer exists'.the dreams I built no longer exist, so why this irony? Why this mockery of my life?
Emotions ranging from pain, anger, regret and sadness hit her with an impact that left her nearly breathless. She barely managed to hide all those feelings inside her, pulling a blanket of ice around her to hold back.
"Mel come with me now." She said in cool voice, which clearly showed her displeasure.
"But Mama'I want to play with knight." Mel whined.
"Remember you are not meant to hang out with strangers." Geet knew she was being vindictive the moment she called Maan a stranger, but she wanted Mel to get far away from him.
Maan's face hardened at her words, showing her that they had found their mark.
Stranger! I am a stranger to her? If Mel is Geet's daughter, than how can I be a stranger to Mel? We are both connected by the woman we love the most, Geet!
"But Mama knight isn't a stranger!"
"Meliara Lily Handa! When I tell you to come, it means you come!" This time there was steel in her words, indicating that she wasn't going to put up with any opposition.
Mel realising how serious her mother was became quiet but her lips started to quiver and her eyes were downcast as she moved towards Geet.
Geet saw her little girl's face and immediately felt bad for upsetting her. So she gave a reassuring pat on her head and bent down to speak to her. "Sweety mummy will play with you later, but why don't you go downstairs to see Meer Ma and Seb. Mummy will be there in a moment." Mel gave a nod and slowly walked away.
Geet then turned towards Maan, letting her anger show through her eyes. "Look, I don't know what you want but make sure you stay away from my daughter. Don't you dare think of using her to get back at me!"
With that she slammed the door and left Maan by himself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vicky walked into his Brother's study to find him brooding and glaring at empty space. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Maan was in a horrible mood.
As Vicky came forward and sat on a chair he could hear Maan mumble to himself. "Stranger. I'll show her who is a stranger. It's time to play hardball."
While Vicky was amused by his brother's ramblings he had important issues to discuss so he gave a discreet cough to grab his Maan's attention.
Maan turned towards his brother, surprised to find him there. "Hey Vicky! When did you come in?"
"Bro I've been here for here for a few minutes but never mind that. There are important things to discuss."
Maan realized what Vicky wanted to talk about and immediately got down to business. "Did you find any information about Geet and what happened?
Maan knew that it was a leap of faith asking help from Vicky but he also knew that his brother was the most capable person in this field.
While the whole world thought that Vicky was just a lazy rich boy with no work, the truth was that Vicky's work was unique. There was no specific job title for what he did for he did a variety of things. He wasn't exactly a spy but he could collect information on anyone or anything. He wasn't in corporate dealings yet he could give Maan any information on rival groups. He worked for Indian government at times, yet he had worked for other countries and different individuals. He preferred not to use violence but he knew better than Dev or Maan how to use a gun. He hung around with the richest men in the world, including presidents and kings but he also knew how to blend in within the gangs in the streets.
Due to the sensitive nature of his job only a few select individuals comprising of Maan, Dev and Dadima knew of his job. So while everyone assumed he was living the high life, he was constantly risking his life for dangerous jobs.
Maan knew better than anyone else why Vicky had chosen this self destructive path. It was because of the self-hatred as well as anger that had built within him. All the Khurana men faced this but had chosen to utilise this in different ways. Dev had probably taken the most beneficial and righteous path by choosing to help people, while Maan had immersed himself in the family business with an unbending intensity.
So when the time had come to dig up information, there was only one person Maan could turn to; Vicky.
"Well here is a file on all the information about Geet's life. This includes health records, school records, work and also about her social life." Vicky handed Maan a folder that was at least a couple of inches long. Maan didn't even ask how Vicky got hold of this, he just accepted it.
"What about the person behind the text messages to Geet?" Maan asked, trying to get to the main issue.
"Well I am working on that. I know that they used a burner phone, which are prepaid phones that cannot be traced back to the owner. But don't worry I'll still find out. At this stage I can tell you that the person was from India. Also I am going to check on your mobile details as well because that can tell us a bit more." Vicky explained to Maan. "Don't worry bro I'll find out all the details."
"Thanks Vicky."
"Bro you know you never have to say thanks." Vicky had always and would always look up to his elder brother who had stood and supported him through the most difficult of times. "Anyone else in your shoes would have hated me."
"Vicky don't bring that up. You know you are my younger brother and that is all that matters. None of it is your fault, it never was. If mum didn't hold you accountable, than how can I?" Maan reassured Vicky.
But Vicky just gave a nod, not really being able to accept his past as easily.
