A Maaneet Tale
Chapter 13
I don't think anyone would be able to sleep if they were on the verge of death. I don't think anyone would be able to sleep if they knew they might die within' 6 to 18 months.
Now that Maan had fallen into a deep sleep, I unlocked his fingers from my waist and climbed out of bed. I headed into the bathroom and stared at my salwar kameez which was abandoned and long forgotten. I picked it up and quickly undressed out of my lengha and blouse. My body immediately felt light as I shimmied into my comfortable salwar kameez. It felt good to be comfortable again. I looked at my reflection on the mirror and saw my Mangalsutra was dangling proudly from my neck, my vermillion the colour of blood showing off on my forehead.
I smiled and stepped out of the washroom. Just as I stepped out, I felt dizzy all over again.
Maan: "Geet" he said groggily in his sleep and I could hear him toss and turn.
Maan: "Geet!" he said louder this time and I felt a strong arm around my waist. I put my hand to my head and blinked furiously so I could get my steady vision back.
"I'm okay. I'm okay" I chanted and clutched Maan's shirt to prevent me from falling. I felt the ground beneath me vanish as he carried me in his arms and laid me down on the bed. I rested my head on the bedframe.
Maan: "Why did you get up in the first place? You know how dangerous it is for you taking fast actions and YET, what did you do? The same thing. What if something happened to you? What if... Oh and don't forget that the doctor said you were meant to be resting. How could you be so careless?" he yelled at me angrily and handed me over a glass of water.
I held the glass of water in shock as silence engulfed the atmosphere. Maan was breathing heavily and I was just shocked. Suddenly, Maan froze and then looked at me. We both continued to stare at each other.
To make things less awkward, I cleared my throat. My throat suddenly felt dry as a desert and I quickly gulped down my glass of water. I set the glass on the bedside table and looked back at Maan who still continued to stare at me. I was just about to ask him why he was staring at me like that when he said something.
Maan: "What if you don't have much time?" he whispered and took my hand in his. His warm touch immediately electricuted me and I was frozen in my place. My heart rate started to increase.
Goodness me, Maan simply touching me made butterflies flutter in my stomach.
I instantly pushed all that behind.
"Are you going to work tomorrow?" I asked, deciding to stop talking about death. It was seriously depressing me out. Thank goodness Maan didn't notice the change of subject.
Maan: "Uh... No. It's your biopsy test tomorrow. I'm going to the hospital with you" he said and let go of my hand. I opened my mouth in shock when he slid into the bed beside me. I closed my mouth and watched him close his eyes and make himself comfortable.
Maan: "Good night, Geet" he mumbled sleepily. I made myself comfortable on the bed and turned my back to him.
Within' minutes, I could hear Maan's breathing turn slow and heavy.
"Love you" I whispered in his ear. When he didn't respond I settled back on my pillow and turned my back on him.
I found myself slowly settling into a dreamless sleep.
I looked at the clock and saw it was already 12:00pm. I shook my head in disbelief at how much I slept today. I guess I was really tired from the wedding.
My thoughts instantly shifted back to yesterday night.
"Love you" she whispered to me in my ear.
She loved me.
And I didn't know if I loved her.
I decided to put those thoughts at the back of my mind and thought about waking Geet up. I tapped on her shoulder but she didn't respond to me.
I tapped harder on her shoulder but she just slapped my hand away. I shook my head and brang my face close to her ear.
"Geet!" I yelled in her ear and she immediately sat up as if she was electricuted. Her face bumped into my shoulder and I suddenly realized how dangerously close her face was to mine. I held her shoulders to steady herself.
Geet: "Why am I in Maan Sir's bedroom? OH!" she said and smacked her head
"You still think I'm your SIR?" I hissed and brang her closer to me.
Geet: "No, I forgot I was married" she said and rolled her eyes.
"How can you FORGET your married? Oh whatever" I said and I realized I was still holding her shoulders. I let go of her shoulders and looked away from her.
"Get ready, Geet. We're going to the hospital" I said and climbed out of bed. Geet happened to climb out of bed faster than me. She walked up to the wardrobe and went through her clothes.
Geet: "I don't know what I should wear" she said in despair and put her hands on her hips. I walked up to her side and browsed through the selection of clothes.
I picked out a red saree and held it out in front of her.
"I think this will look good on you" I said and held it closer to her to see how it would look. It looked fine to me.
Geet: "Okay. I'll wear this then" she said and held the saree in her hands.
Doctor: "We did a drill in your head and took a tissue out for sampling. You might feel slightly even dizzy or pain in your head. You might even get headaches" he advised me and I felt the bruise on the top of my head again. It was really small, probably the size of a dot. The doctor told me what to do and what not to do and I nodded and agreed to everything he said. The doctor finally let me go and I stepped out of the room. As soon as Maan saw me coming, he held my hand and put his arm around my waist protectively.
Maan: "How are you feeling?" he asked me as we walked towards the exit of the hospital.
"I feel slightly weird, sore, and dizzy. The doctor said we should get the reports in 2 days" I said and put my hand on my head again.
He nodded and helped me sit inside the car.
I was feeling curious about the reports already.
