She flipped her hair around and tried to get up and at the same time their eyes met and the time stopped.
Both of them were gazing into each other's eyes oblivious of their surroundings. She questioned herself, was she looking into a pair of hazel eyes? Or was the sun playing tricks with her eyes? She gazed deeply into his eyes again and noticed the brownish-green appearance in them. Hmmm'he definitely did have hazel eyes. Her eyes darted to his face nervously and caught his handsome features and she held her breath. He was definitely sexy she thought and just as the thought came into her mind, her face turned red. She could not handle being this close to him anymore and tried to get up.
He noticed her nervousness and helped her get up. She bent down and picked up her book which had dropped to the ground.
She mumbled, "Umm, I am sorry, I was not watching where I was going."
He seemed amused at her nervousness and said, "It is ok, do not worry."
His amusement suddenly changed to concern and he asked her, "Tumhe lagi to nahin?"
She smiled coyly and said, "Nahin meih theek houn."
She did not understand why she was acting so weird in front of him. She noticed that she was checking out his well built body, handsome features and his wonderful smile. When he smiled there was a twinkle in his eyes. It was a smile to die for, she thought. He was wearing dark coloured jeans, a crisp white shirt with three of his buttons open and dressy leather shoes. It made him look quite dashing. She wondered how old he was because he looked a bit mature.
She realized she was getting carried away and told herself, "Earth to Geet! Earth to Geet! Yeh kya sooch rahi ho? Koi sharam hai ya nahin." Giggling to herself, she murmured, "Nahin."
While she was lost in her own thoughts he could not stop admiring her and noticed that her face was going through different set of expressions in that moment from nervousness to confusion to surprise and it rested on a silly smile. He tried to get her attention by clearing his throat.
As she heard him clear his throat she looked up to him and stammered, "Umm.. I will leave now. Thank you for saving me. Umm'ok bye."
His gaze was still on her face but when he heard the word bye he came back to his senses. For some unknown reason he did not want her to leave, he wanted to talk to her, he wanted to listen to her, and he wanted to get to know her better. It was as if he was mesmerized by her.
She had started to walk away towards the parking lot and while she was walking away from him he murmured, "You are welcome".
She could not hear his voice but she felt something, an unknown feeling and at that instinct she turned around to see that he was still staring at her intensely. He noticed that the weather had suddenly turned cloudy and the sun had hidden itself behind the clouds.
He kept watching her until she drove off in her white Honda Accord Coupe. He was still lost in her, her eyes, her smile and her scent which smelled of lavender. He had instantly recognized the smell of lavender because it reminded him of his mother. He faintly recalled how his mother used to be fond of the purple flowers. That is what he used to call them when he was younger, purple flowers. Later on, when she had passed away he had kept a bunch of those flowers in his room. He still had that memento safely tucked away in one of his drawers at home along with some of the other possessions of his mother. Sigh! He missed his mother a lot, but he was glad his Dadi was always there to support him.
His thoughts had shifted back to the beautiful girl who was no longer there. He smiled and murmured to himself, "She was a real beauty." He closed his eyes and tried to recall her image in his mind, her turquoise knee length dress, her straight black hair, and the most important feature were her eyes. They were grayish blue, as soft as feathers. She had felt so light when she had fallen on him. He could still remember her soft and silky hair on his face and her nervous breath.
Snapping out of his thoughts he said to himself, "Oh God! What is happening to me? How can I think about a stranger?" He scolded himself saying that he had no right to think about someone else. He was already engaged to someone, someone special. He loved her, did he not? He had known her for the last one and half years and they had become good friends. Their friendship had blossomed into love and now she was his fiance. His Dadi loved her very much and he loved her too. Sameera, his Sameera. They had just recently gotten engaged and only the closest family members knew about this engagement. Dadi did not want everyone to know about the engagement until the wedding cards were sent out. The wedding was eight months away.
Just as he was about to walk away from his thoughts; he noticed something red lying in the grass glittering in the sun. He bent down and picked it up and saw that it was a bookmark. It was not a simple bookmark either; it had a fancy ribbon, white beads and two red dangling hearts attached to the ribbon. They tinkled softly as he moved the ribbon. As he was admiring the bookmark the red hearts glittered in the sun once again. He felt as if the hearts were twinkling.
He noticed that there was something written on the bookmark.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - Confucius.
He held the bookmark and started walking towards the university campus silently listening to the two hearts tinkling against each other.
He stopped suddenly and looked around him and saw that the sun had come out from behind the clouds. Everything seemed so fresh and lively, the grass, the trees, the birds and the little stream that ran behind the park. He read the quote again, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" and started walking.
Little did he know that his journey in life was about to change, soon. Only time would reveal itself to him and his journey.
She realized she was getting carried away and told herself, "Earth to Geet! Earth to Geet! Yeh kya sooch rahi ho? Koi sharam hai ya nahin." Giggling to herself, she murmured, "Nahin."
