She was beyond screaming or crying, it was almost dream-like. It was like coming out of a theater and realizing that the lights were still on. This hostel wasn't the same hostel it had been an hour ago. She wasn't the same person she had been an hour ago.
She felt like a stranger. She raised her hands to touch the two tiny little wounds on her neck.
She should be happy, she should be grateful. She saved her life, she was out there with a killer and ..
The thought died away. She couldn't be happy and she didn't want to think about how evil Abhay was. She felt hollow and aching.
She looked down at her hand. On the fourth finger was a ring. It was made out of silver. It was shaped like a rose, and the inside had black transparent diamonds on it.
It was beautiful. Every leaf and tiny thorn was perfect. But a black flower?
It's a symbol of the Lords, her mind told her. The symbol of the vampires.
It was the cool wind voice back again. The one which had given her advice about silver and werewolfs.
Abhay wanted her to wear the ring, he claimed that it would protect her. But knowing him, it was probably another trick to control her mind.
It took her an hour to take the ring off, pulling and twisting until her finger was red and swollen. But, with every impossible tug, her resolve to get the ring off just got stronger. At last, the ring wrenched free.
She threw the ring in the bin, and stumbled towards the bed.
She was tired, so tired. She wanted to sleep. She will sort out everything tomorrow, she promised herself.
She thought that the sleep won't come, but almost as soon as she lay down, her eyes closed. And as Pia slept, Maithali woke up.
Cold and desolate, Maithali felt a chill as she stood near the river. She felt so alone.
That was when the hunters jumped out of the bushes and started chasing the stranger at full speed. She opened her mouth to shout a warning, but she knew that he didn't stand a chance.
She gasped as she saw the stranger being driven back, surrounded by the hunters.
''Don't hurt him. Please.'' Maithali pushed the hunters aside. ''Don't you see? He could have hurt me but he didn't. He can't help being what he is, but he is not evil.''
The leader pushed her. ''Don't think you're going to get away without being punished, either.''
Maithali followed them up to the cave, her stomach churning with fear.
''Let's kill him and get it over with.'' He yelled. ''Take him outside.''
''No.'' Maithali screamed. It didn't do any good. She was caught and held back in strong hands. The stranger looked at her as he was driven away.
That was when the real horror began.
The stranger just won't die.
The hunters jabbed him with their spear. The wound opened, blood started flowing, the wound closed. Everyone around them gasped as the leader jabbed him again. The wound closed again.
Everyone was scared, but no one moved.
Maithali saw something happening. Something new. Fear of the unknown. They were turning from good people into people who would torture a man to death.
''He may be a demon, but he still bleeds.'' One of the hunters said. ''He feels pain.''
''See if he burns!'' Someone else yelled.
Maithali felt like she was in the middle of a storm, able to see things but not doing anything about it. People were running, getting knives, torches, stone axes. It was mindless and unstoppable.
People were screaming, burning the stranger, throwing stones at him. The stranger was falling, bleeding. He was lying on the ground, unable to fight back. But, still, he didn't die.
Maithali was screaming, too. And it went on and on. But he still wouldn't die.
Maithali felt like she was in a nightmare. Her throat was raw from screaming, her vision was going grey. She couldn't stand to watch this anymore, she couldn't bear the smell of burning flesh. But she had nowhere to go. This was her life. She was going insane..
Pia sat up in bed, gasping. She had never been happier to be herself, to be awake.
It was all real, she accepted that now. She had fallen asleep and her subconscious had let her watch more of Maithali's story. But she still doesn't know how the story ended. She wasn't sure she wanted to know. But it was hard to blame him for what happened afterward.
All those things she said to him, those terrible things. Why did she say that? She was so angry, she lost her mind completely. She hated him and all she cared about was hurting him. She thought he was evil, pure evil.
She told him to go away. How could she do that? He was her soulmate.
Inside the emptiness, the cool voice whispered again, but you told Paul that he keeps killing you. Is that justifiable? He is a vampire, a predator and that makes him evil. Maybe he can't help what he is, but there's no reason for you to be destroyed because of it. Are you going to let him kill you in this life, too?
She was torn between pity for him and the logical voice of her mind.
You can feel sorry for him, it whispered. Just keep him far away from you.
She felt better having come to a decision, even if it was a decision that left her heart numb. She looked at the clock beside her, and blinked.
Oh my god ' school.
It was a Friday. Mount College seemed light years away, now. But it wasn't. It was her life. Her dream. She has to forget about all the other stuff, the vampires, the reincarnation, the Lords, and get on with her normal life.
She sent him away and he's gone.
--
Misha, Rhea and Kabir were standing in a circle, hands held together. She shut her eyes as Panchi chanted some spells and blood started flowing from her neck on it's own, and after a minute, a slight dizziness. A weakness. She seemed to have a new sense. She could see Rhea's mind, but it wasn't like seeing with eyes.
Then Rhea pulled back, and the new sense disappeared.
Misha's fingers went to her neck, she felt a little wetness there. ''Did you just..?''
''Yeah.'' Rhea shrugged. ''I drank your blood. I couldn't bite you because I have no fangs, Panchi helped me.'' She looked at her gratefully. ''It will go away in just a minute.''
Panchi took out a silver plate from her bag.
''What are you doing?''
''Every species has some substance that's harmful to it.'' She said. ''Iron for witches, wood for vampires..and silver for werewolfs.''
''I meant, why?'' Misha asked, but she knew the answer already. She watched redness in Rhea's arm as she hit herself with the plate.
Exchange blood.
Misha gulped. She didn't look at Kabir. She thought that she should do it first and show Kabir that it isn't so bad. She can do this..she can do this.. she had to.
Rhea was looking at her, offering her wrist.
She shut her eyes and put her mouth to Rhea's wrist.
Warmth. Wellbeing. Sweet. It was faintly sweet.
''Oh boy.'' Misha sighed. ''If you could bottle up that stuff, you'd make millions.''
''It's happened before. Humans hunting us for our blood.'' Rhea answered.
''Talk later. Blood tie now.'' Panchi pressed.
Kabir went ahead to drink Rhea's blood. After 5 minutes, Panchi sighed and physically pulled them apart. ''Okay, guys, let go of each other, NOW.''
''All right. Now we share the same blood.'' Rhea held out a hand, and Misha and Kabir kept their hands over hers.
''Repeat after me.'' Panchi said. ''I promise to be kin and defend you always.''
''We promise to be kin and defend you always.'' Misha and Kabir repeated.
''That's it.'' Panchi shrugged. ''Now, you're family.''
''Let's go home.'' Rhea looked at Misha. ''You inherit our blood feuds too. You have to help us find out who killed Ruhi.''
''She's been trying to do that all along.'' Kabir interrupted.
They left the deer where it was. ''There are too much scavangers here. It won't be wasted.''
Misha looked behind her, and she thought that she saw a shadow in the clearing, a glint of greenish-orange eyes. She opened her mouth to tell the others..and the shadow was gone.
All her sense seemed sharpened, and alert. It made getting out of the woods much easier. Rhea and Kabir didn't walk hand-in-hand, but they kept looking at each other.
''You are happy, ain't you?'' Misha whispered to Kabir.
''Yeah.'' He grinned sheepishly. After a minute, he continued. ''It's like, I don't know how to describe it, but I belong with Rhea. She sees me like no one else does. I mean, not the outside stuff. She sees me inside, and she likes it. Nobody else has ever done that ..except you.''
''I'm happy for you.''
''Listen. I think we should start looking for you-''
''Oh, shut up.'' Misha groaned.
He gave the sheepish grin again. ''Sorry.''
She found herself thinking of Shaurya again, his eyes.. but it kept dissolving, into eyes that flash blue and gold and grey.
Oh, shit, she was doing it again. She didn't want to share a bus seat with Raj, much less her life.
Contd. on the next page.
''What I want to know is.'' Kabir said. They were sitting on overstuffed big cozy sofas in Rhea's farmhouse. ''Who made you a werewolf?''
''It wasn't anybody. I was born a werewolf.''
''So, where have you come from?'' Misha asked.
''There's this town. You know, where all our people live without the fear of humans. The Lord I worked with, he found it in the prehistoric times so that we have someplace safe to live.''
''The only problem.'' Panchi interrupted. ''Is that they still do things like they did in the prehistoric times. Nobody is allowed to leave, except a few men.''
Like Raj. Misha opened her mouth, but Rhea was speaking again.
''So that's why I ran away. Werewolfs are looked down in the Vampire clan. The Lord I worked with, he had some other four werewolfs, too, but they were all men, and they were given some freedom I didn't have. I wanted to see the human world.''
''There is this guy, Abhay. He once visited our Lord. He is a Lord too. He met Rhea, and ..''
''I knew I could trust him.'' Rhea smiled. ''It happens, you know? You meet someone and you know you can trust them. I told him about how I felt, and he said that I should run away. And I did.''
''Oh.. Where is this place?''
''It's kind of hard to tell you, actually. You are not even supposed to know it exists.''
''And the penalty for running away or letting a human know about the supernatural is death.'' Rhea sighed. ''But you're family, so here goes. Supernaturals are everywhere around you. Witches, werewolfs, shape shifters. We are everywhere.''
Kabir grinned at Rhea. ''So, you can read minds. Can you read my mind right now?'' He asked mischievously.
''Soulmates can read each other's minds without even trying.'' She answered Kabir.
Soulmates..Misha wanted to get to a different subject.
''I wish you'd stop saying that.'' Panchi said. ''What you have is much better than being soulmates. With love, you get to know a person first. Being soulmates is involuntary, you don't even have to like the person when you meet them. They may be completely wrong for you in every way, but you know you'll never be completely happy without them''
Misha felt awkward. She had to say something. ''Rhea, what if that happened to you? You found somebody, and you were soulmates with them, and you didn't want to be?'' She realized that her voice was strange, thick. ''Is there any way you can get rid of it?''
There was a pause.
''I've never heard of anything like that before.'' Rhea met her gaze, searching her eyes. ''But you could ask a witch like Panchi, if you had that problem.''
Misha swallowed. Rhea's eyes were gentle and friendly, and she needed someone to confide in. ''Rhea..''
She didn't get any further. There was a crash from the backyard.
''Rhea, wait a minute.''
But, Rhea didn't even wait a second. But she lost time unlocking the doors, and Misha could hear the footsteps of someone running away.
Rhea threw the door open, darted out, and screamed.
''Oh god.'' Kabir said. ''Who would do that?''
Misha took one look and felt a burning in her chest and arms ' a painful, bad feeling. Her vision blurred.
''Let's get it inside.'' Panchi said. ''Rhea, are you all right?''
Rhea and Panchi picked the goat up, and laid it on the rug near the table.
''She's dead.'' Panchi said. Her face was composed and calm.
Misha and Rhea started pulling out the wooden stakes from the goat's body. Some were as small as toothpicks, others were long and thick, with a point at one end. Someone strong did this, Misha thought. Someone strong to punch wood through a goat's body.
Over and over, the goat was pierced everywhere. She was stabbed hundreds of times.
''There wasn't much bleeding.'' Panchi said. ''That means that she was dead when someone did it.''
''Someone either cut her throat, or bit it. '' Rhea said. ''So, it was quick for her, not like .. ''
''What?'' Misha said.
''Not like uncle Hodge.'' She looked back at the goat, and pulled another piece of wood out. ''You see, they killed Uncle Hodge, only he was alive when they did it.''
For a moment, Misha couldn't speak. She slowly found her voice. ''Why?''
Rhea pulled out two more stakes. ''He told a human about us.''
Misha and Kabir looked at one another.
Panchi went on. ''So, someone's killed the goat the same way Uncle Hodge was killed. That means that the 'someone' knows about supernaturals.''
Kabir's eyes looked darker than usual. ''You were talking about a vampire hunter?''
''That gets my vote.'' Panchi said.
''The problem is, that I am not a vampire. Neither is Panchi.''
''Who are vampire hunters?'' Misha asked. ''And how come Kabir knows about this?''
''I told him when we were coming back.'' Rhea shrugged. ''They are supposed to be humans who know about the supernatural world.''
''Stuff like how your uncle was executed?'' Misha said.
''Yeah, but that's not much of a secret.'' Panchi said. ''The traditional method of execution among supernaturals is iron, silver and wood respectively.''
''Rhea, why did you have goats?''
''For food. I couldn't go out every day to hunt.''
Misha looked back at the goat. Her eyes settled on her mouth. ''Wait, there's something there.''
''Please tell me you're joking.'' Kabir said.
Misha waved a hand at him. ''Hang on a second.'' She ran into the kitchen and took a knife.
''Okay.'' She grunted as she pried the goat's teeth open. ''It's a flower, a black flower.''
Rhea and Panchi looked at each other. ''Well, it has something to do with the Lords. We are sure of that now. Black flowers are their symbols.''
''Symbols, like?''
''We wear them to identify to each other. You know, on rings or pins etc. Every species has it's kind of flower, and then there are flowers which mean that you belong to a certain family.''
''And the Lord Rhea stayed with.'' Panchi said. ''Their symbol is the Black Iris. I know because I met Raj once.''
''Raj .. '' Rhea stared at Panchi, eyes wide open.
''What about Raj?'' Panchi asked. She looked at the flower Misha had taken out.
''Well, don't you see? It's my Lord's flower, that is, Raj's father. So, maybe someone from that particular clan did it.''
''Um .. '' Kabir interrupted. ''Who's Raj?''
Rhea and Panchi looked at him, while Misha looked away. After so many missed oppurtunities, it was going to sound extremely crazy to say .. Oh, yes, she'd met Raj. Twice.
''He's my brother, well, sort-of.'' Rhea said.
''He's crazy.'' Panchi said.
''He's the only one from my clan that might know that I'm here.'' She said. ''He found me writing to Abhay about running away, but I don't think he noticed Abhay's address on it. He doesn't notice things which are not about him.''
''You can say that again. All Raj thinks about is Raj. He is completely self-centered.''
''All he does is chase girls and party. And hunt.''
''He doesn't like humans.'' Panchi leaned back. ''If he didn't like playing with human girls, he'd probably be planning to wipe out the entire human race.''
''Sounds like a great guy.'' Kabir muttered.
''To cut it short, there's only one thing he wants when he goes after human girls.''
Misha's heart was racing. With every passing second, it was getting hard to speak up.
''Wait, so you think he did all this stuff?'' Kabir asked.
''I wouldn't put it past him.'' Panchi shrugged.
''But his own sister.'' Kabir said.
''He'd do it if he thought that the family honor is involved.''
''Yes, well, there's only one problem with all of this.'' Rhea said. ''Raj isn't here. He's somewhere in California.''
''No, he's not.'' Raj said casually, from the back of the room.
PRECAP
Standing on the other side of the corridor was a tall girl. She looked an year older than Pia, and she had long black hair, very long hair. She was extraordinarily beautiful- and Pia recognized her.
''I'm sorry if I scared you.'' In a flash, the girl was in front of her.
--
Misha kicked him again. She knew it was uncalled for, she knew she had no reason, but she had to.
''Oh, for god's sake.'' Raj said, jumping backward. ''Are you crazy?''
