~Chapter Sixteen: Let the Play Begin~
It was a beautiful Monday morning. Riddhima was already at school, writing the class's topic of the day. One day of rest and she felt a lot better. Rahul and her father had tried to make her understand, but she refused to let this incident rule her life. She was going to go teach, and that was final. Her father had insisted that Rahul drop her at work, and as much as she wanted to get some fresh air, she had no choice but to listen to his demand.
She wrote the last few words on the board and sat down on her chair. Her classroom was simple. She had a bookshelves in the rear, plants along the windows, and a few teddy bears here and there. Some were hers, and some were given to her as gifts from her students. She had a thing for them. Which girl didn't right?
Riiinggg!!!
At the sound of the bell, children started to fill in the class and take their respective seats in the room. They all seemed to be really happy about something. They were usually a joyful bunch, but today, it was different.
"Good Morning Class" She spoke with a huge smile plastered on her face. Instead of hearing a response, she heard giggles. "Care to share what's so funny."
"Miss, it's just that we are so happy for you." Yuvi said.
"Yes, Miss, we really are" Naina joined in. Riddhima thought they were referring to the incident, but the giggles were illogical to her. Then someone said something that caught her completely off guard.
"Yes, Miss, you two make a great couple."
"Excuse me?" She blinked. She wasn't sure she heard the word couple. There was no couple in her life. She was single. They must be playing an early April's Fool day prank to her.
"Yes, Miss, you and Armaan" Sapna pointed the first page to the newspaper, the words Armaan AND Riddhima: the cutest couple of India (page 6) printed in large characters at the top left corner. Riddhima was shocked. She took the paper from her student and flipped to the 6th page.
In an interview yesterday, Armaan Malik, India's most handsome man has made an astonishing revelation. He and Riddhima Gupta are indeed a couple. When reporter Rita Roy asked him, he first hid the truth, but how long can true love hide. At the end, he declared his undying love for Riddhima and that she was indeed the one for him. We have yet to ask Miss Gupta about her relationship with Mr. Malik, but from what we saw, they seem to be in love...
She read and re-read the article over and over, making sure she didn't miss anything, that the names were wrong, but no. Why would Armaan say such a thing? Oh, she was furious. Really FURIOUS. She would kill the man. Just wait till she gets her paws on him. She was going to tear him to shreds.***
"Armaan" Nikki came barging in Armaan's room with the newspaper in her hand. Apparently, there was an interview too, but she hadn't seen it. 'When, what and where' were the three words that kept bouncing inside her head. Armaan was still asleep in his bed, his pillow covering his face.
"Armaan? You have some serious explanation to do?" Her loud voice filled the room as she pulled away the fluffy cushion. He simply groaned and pulled the covers on top of him in attempt to bloke the light.
Nikki was not going to let him go easy. He just declared his first official girlfriend out of the blue and now, he was sleeping peacefully as if nothing had happened at all. "Armaan, explain why it's written that you and Riddhima are an item?"
At those words, Armaan's head shot up and the previous day came flooding in. "Shit" He muttered before jolting towards the washroom, completely ignoring the questions that kept flying towards him. He was supposed to meet Riddhima before she saw or heard about anything. How could he sleep in when he had such an important task in hand? He got dressed and ran out the door without any explanation whatsoever, leaving behind a furious Nikita.
As he drove to her school, he wondered how he was going to explain what he did, why he had done it. Would she understand or...He wondered. The last time he had gotten on her bad side, he ended up with punch all over him. What would it be this time? He could already imagine an angry Riddhima running after him with a slipper in her hand. Somehow, the thought brought a smile to his lips and helped him relax.
After what seemed like an eternity of driving, he finally made it to her building. "This is it, Armaan" He inhaled sharply and made his way to his funeral.
Riddhima's class was empty and she was busy in some paperwork. Not knowing how to approach her, he slowly walked in and coughed lightly to make her acknowledge his presence. Her head shot up at the sound and her eyes widened in anger. He could practically see the smoke coming out of her ears.
"You" Riddhima threw her white teddy bear towards him. "How could you? You told them we were going out, that we were together!"
Armaan ducked "Riddhima, try to understand. I-" He defended himself, but another teddy just flew at him, this time hitting him one the face.
"No you listen. Do you know what this means? They will chew our head off and follow us everywhere, like we were some movie star couple. They will print every little detail of our life and make rumours and what not for god knows how many months." She exclaimed. She was furious at him. She hated being in the media, and dating India's most eligible bachelor would definitely put her in the spotlight. To be his first official girlfriend, that was bound to raise so many questions. He was a dead man today!
"Riddhima, I know. I'm sorry. I-" He started to speak trying to reason with her, only to be interrupted once again.
"Sorry! You come her and expect that sorry will fix all this." She snapped at him. Suddenly, her eyes widened in horror. "Oh my god! Dad! Rahul! What are they going to say?"
To be honest, he hadn't given much thought to what anyone would say. His main concern was what she was going to say. He was sure Rahul and her father would understand his motives, but his parents, Nikita, they had no clue why he had done what he had done. For the moment, he had to make her understand that his actions were solely based on her safety.
"Riddhima, please listen-" He was cut f once again by a third teddy that came right across him and hit him in the chest. "Seriously, do you really think this fluffy little thing will harm me" He had to admit, teddy bears were better than punch any day.
"You're right" She reached for the stapler. That was bound to make some impact. "Don't come closer, or I'll staple your lips together, that way you cannot go on spreading rumours." She raised her arm, clutching the stapler firmly.
Armaan knew better and called her bluff. He looked straight into her eyes. "I dare you" He said as he came closer without tearing his eyes of hers.
"I'm warning you"
He shrugged his shoulders "I'll take my chances." He took another step forward and another one afterwards. He could see the anger in her eyes, but she was slowly starting to calm herself down. Perfect. That's what he needed. He slowly reached for the stapler, closed his hand around her soft one. He started to bring her arm down; she hesitated at first but let go eventually.
"Now, Riddhima, listen to me. I have a perfectly good reason to do what I did." He released her hand, taking the stapler away from her. He didn't need any wholes in his face. "Will you be a good girl and listen to me."
She simply nodded, still captivated by his eyes. She shook her head, trying to break free from the trance. She sat back down and exhaled sharply. "You have five minutes"
"Riddhima, they had pictures of us. At the movies, bookstore and all." He started narrating the events.
"So" She raised an eyebrow, not truly understanding the point to his story.
"It was an anonymous source. Don't you think it's suspicious that someone has been trailing us for a couple of days? That, and all the recent events. I think it might be him."
"Who are you referring to?" She asked confused, but her eyes grew bigger in horror when it hit her. "No" She gasped.
He nodded at her reaction "I don't know what he wants, but I think he planned all of it. He obviously wanted us to act as a couple. Don't ask me why, because I have no clue."
An awkward silence engulfed the room, and after what seemed like an eternity, Riddhima sighed. "I'm sorry Armaan for reacting the way I did. I just thought that-"
When you fall get up Oh oh... And if you fall get up Oh oh...Tsamina mina Zangalewa Cuz this is Africa''Unknown Caller' flashed on the screen.
They both looked at each other in shock, before Armaan answered the call. "Hello"
"Well hello there Armaan" a cold voice was heard through the device. "Please shut the door, and put me on speaker that the both of you can hear me." Without further due, he executed his demands. "Good" His tone was always so calm and manipulative. "First of all, Armaan, I am very proud of you. You caught up quite fast. Good thing you were smart enough to understand what I wanted, or God knows what other measure I might have taken to make sure everything went according to my plan."
Armaan felt relief for a brief second. For a moment, he thought that his instincts had been wrong. But then again, everything was planned, so there must be something big awaiting them, something that wouldn't end too well.
"Now that the public knows that you're dating. You cannot tell anyone about the reason, not even Rahul or Shashank or Nikita or Aryan or anyone else. Everyone must believe it's real. You might want to prepare a coffin if you plan on disobeying me. I wonder with whom I'll start. Nikita would be a good choice. You wouldn't want the poor girl to die in her wedding dress."
"How does it affect you whether we are together or not?" Armaan asked. Nothing seemed to make sense to. How is them being a couple going to help his plan? He looked up to Riddhima, and she seemed as lost as him.
"Everything will become clear later. Now, you just have to do as I say if you don't want to organize a funeral." His deep voice echoed through the classroom. "Do as I say, and everyone will remain alive. For now" He chuckled before hanging up. The room went silent.
"So, now what?" Riddhima said to ease the tension in the room.
The young man sat down on the desk, raked his fingers through his hair, and let down a sigh "I guess we have to figure out how to convince we are a real couple. My parents shouldn't be that hard, but yours might be."
She nodded "Yeah, you're right. But, I guess we are going to have to be quite convincing. We should get all our facts right. So when and how did we meet?"
Armaan raised an eyebrow "I think that part is fairly obvious, since I was covered in punch in front of a billion of people." He added with a grin
Riddhima's cheek grew red "Oh, yeah...Sorry about that...The real question would be when have we realized our undying love for each other." She changed the topic almost immediately. Now one wanted to remember that silly little misunderstanding.
"Well, how about love at first sight?"
"I don't believe in love at first sight." She replied quite hastily. "You can feel attracted to a person, but that's pretty much all."
"Well, that's something I don't agree with you"
Riddhima laughed. "Don't tell me that the great Armaan Malik is actually a romantic at heart"
He smiled "I wasn't, but I guess I became one."
