Chapter Eleven

Nupur: hello….

Voice: hello khukhi………

Nupur: maaaa………..

Yes that was Nupur's mother……Mrs. Charulata Roy….Nupur was too shocked to hear her mother's voice after so many years.

Charulata: kemon asis khukhi? (How are u khuki?) Khukhi was Nupur's pet name. Her parents used to call her by this name. Khuki means baby girl.

Nupur: maa….tumi? (Mom……is that you?)

Charulata: ha khukhi…..ami maa bolsi. Kemon asis? (yes khuki….it's mom. How are you?)

Nupur: valo. (fine)

Charulata: khukhi tor baba onek oshushtho. Toke ekbar dekhte chai. Tui ek bar ashbi maa. Ami jani j tui amader upar onek rege asis ……kintu tarpor o ekbar ashbi……hoyto eta tor babar shesh shomoy. (Khukhi your father is so sick. He wants to see u ones. Can you please come? I know that you are mad at us….in spite of this please comes…….may be it's your father's last time)

After telling this Nupur's mother burst out cry. Nupur couldn't bear this anymore. After all she loved her parents so much…….

Nupur: ami ashsi maa……ami ashsi…(mom I'm coming)

Charulata: thank you khukhi…..

After that they hanged up their phone. Nupur was sitting on the sofa like a statue when Mayank came back. Mayank couldn't understand what was happened. Because when he left Nupur was alright. He went to Nupur and sat beside her.

Mayank: Nupur……kya huya?

Nupur didn't reply. Mayank called her again……

Mayank: Nupur…..

No answer again. Now Mayank became scared. He placed his hand on Nupur's shoulder and called her again. This time Nupur got back her sense…..

Nupur: Mayank…..baba……..

Nupur couldn't able to talk. She was sobbing…….

Mayank: Nupur…..relax……please stop crying……………..aur kya huya mujhe batao.

Nupur: Mayank….maa phone koresilo Calcutta theke ……baba onek oshushtho…maa bolsilo hoy to eta tar shesh shomoy..(Mayank…..Mom called me from Calcutta….Dad is so sick……mom told me that may be it's his last time)

This was the first time when Mayank heard her to speak in Bengali though they both were from Calcutta. But this time it was not important. There was something more important and that was Nupur's condition. She was sobbing continuously. Mayank tried to stop her…..

Mayank: Nupur dekho shob thik hoye jabe….( Nupur everything will be alright)

Nupur: Mayank….I have to go back to India….

Mayank: okay……I'm arranging the tickets and you get ready to go. And please stop crying.

Nupur: okay…….I won't cry.

Mayank: That's like a good girl. I'm going……you take care of yourself. Ticket milte hi main tumhe phone karti hoon……..tum tayar rehna………hum first flight pakrenge……

Nupur: Hum?

Mayank: ha…main bhi tumhare sath ja raha hoon……..

Nupur: Mayank iska koyi jarurat nehi hey……..

Mayank: maine tumhe pucha nehi Nupur…..main tumhare sath ja rahi hoon and its final……

Nupur knew Mayank very well. She knew that he never changed his decision. So she gave up. Mayank left Nupur's place and Nupur went to pack her bags. After two hours Mayank informed her that he got the tickets. Nupur left her home and went to the airport where Mayank was waiting for her. Nupur reached the airport. Then Mayank and Nupur both got into the plane. The entire journey Nupur stayed quite. Mayank didn't feel to disturb her. After some hours their flight touched Dumdum airport. After reaching they both directly went to the hospital. That was the same hospital where Sujata was working. Actually Sujata told Charulata about Nupur. She gave her Nupur's number. When Nupur reached the hospital she found Sujata………

Nupur: Su……baba kothay? (Su……where is dad?)

Sujata: ay amar sathe…..( come with me)

They went to the cabin where Nupur's dad stayed. He mom was also there. When Charulata saw her daughter after so many years she couldn't control herself. She hugged Nupur. They both were crying…..

Charulata: Nupur…..tor baba….(Nupur….your father)

Nupur: maa…..shob thik hoye jabe…..(Mom……..everything will be alright)

Then Nupur looked at Sujata. Sujata signaled her to come with her…..

Nupur: Su……baba.

Sujata: Nupur….uncle's condition is not well……he has throat cancer……last stage….we can't do anything…..

Nupur: what?

Nupur was so shocked. It seemed her world was going to end. She couldn't able to stand up properly. Mayank helped her to stand up.

Mayank: Nupur……nijeke samlau…tumi bhenge porle maa ke k dekhbe? ( Nupur…be strong….if you break down then who will take care mom)

Nupur: ya…..Mayank….you are right.

Nupur went to her mom. Charulata was sitting outside of the cabin. Nupur sat beside her. She held her mother's hand. They didn't talk to each other. But they both knew that they had nothing to do. Mayank observed this. Henever saw Nupur is such vulnerable condition. He couldn't understand what he should do. But only one thing he knew that he couldn't leave Nupur. They were waiting. Suddenly Nupur's father condition got worsens. Doctor was trying to do something that he could survive for some more days. Nupur, Charulata and Mayank were waiting outside. Meanwhile Sujata came…..

Sujata: Nupur…..uncle wants to meet you…….

Nupur entered into the cabin. She saw her father was lying on the bed. He looked so pale and lifeless….Nupur called him…..

Nupur: Baba…..

Her father looked at her. A smile came on his face………

Arvind: Khukhi…..
