chapter 25


champa comes in and smiles at them. maan and geet both feel uneasy by her entry.

champa: geet memsaab, maine khaana lagaya, aap niche aajayiye (turnd to maan), aap bhi aajayiye saab.

both give her a surprised look at her last words. they look at each other and then towards champa. champa breaks the growing silence,

champa: arey memsaab, yeh tho mehmaan haina??? khaane ke liye bulayi tho sahi....
geet(breathing out heavily, looked from her to maan): khaana taiyaar hai, aap bhi mere saath khaana khayiye. waise bhi aap pehli baar hamare ghar aaye hai.....
maan(surprised by her invite): par......(champa interrupts)
champa: arey saab chaliyena, memsaab bhi aapko bularahi hai......
maan(confused): teek hai......
champa: yeh hui na baath, ab chaliye dono......

she starts towards the door. maaneet look at each other and then follow champa who was waiting for them at the door. all 3 reach the dining table. maan and geet sit opposite to each other, glancing each other every now and then. maan was giving confused but tender looks while geet gave him cold looks. champa turns up the plates in front of them and goes inside to bring the food. she keeps them on the table and her phone starts ringing. both maan and geet look at her. she recieves the call and becomes anxious after hearing the news, maaneet were waiting for champa to break the news. she puts her phone down with teary eyes. she turns to geet,

champa: memsaab mujhe jaana hoga. meri beti ka accident ho gaya hai, aur bahut serious hai.

geet gets up from her place and goes near champa. she taps her shoulders and consoles her saying,

geet: phikar math karo champa, tumhaari beti ko kuch nahi hoga. main doctor ko phone karke unse baath karungi. tumhari beti ki ilaaj ki zimmeddari meri hai. usse ahchce achcha doctor hi dekhenge......

champa breaks down hearing her words. she hugs geet and starts crying. geet also became teary eyed. maan was just staring at them, not knowing what to do. she consoles her and asks her to wait for while. she goes to her room and comes back in a minute with 25,000rs. she gives it to champa. she doesnt take it but geet somehow makes her to accept it. maan was just admiring geet for her simplicity and understanding. he hadnt imagined geet to be such tender hearted. from the day he had dashed her in the mall, he had always thought she was just talkative, senseless girl but geet always surprised hm. first at the parking lot of KC, then during the interview, then yesterday night when she apologised and now!!! he dint seem to understand her at all. what was she??? she was so much different in different situations. she adjusted to every circumstance almost like water gets mixed with milk. she fought for silly things and took challenges seriously, she cried when it hurt and helped when some is in need. she smiled when she was happy and mingled with everyone with a good heart. she was angry at times and showed ppl their place when they were arrogant. she exactly knew what to do when or was it just like her all the time??? he dint know. he kept staring at her evry move, almost lost in his thoughts abt her. he dint know what was so attracting abt her. almost 5mins had passed after champa had left but he kept staring at her without knowledge. geet stared at him coldly, watching him. she hadnt forgiven him yet. she finally came close to him. maan looked at her unknowingly. he was in his own world. geet put her hands in front of his, nothing happened. finally she poked him, with her finger. he flinched at it and came back to his senses saying " ouch, that hurt". he looked up to see geet fuming. he smiled in confusion. geet turned to take the food to serve him.

geet: now if u r done with staring me, shall i serve u???
maan(still confused): huh???...a...aa... yeah sure.

geet kept her expression stern. she served him food. he just watched her still not able to digest the fact that he was staring at her for so long unaware as to how much she served him. after serving him ,geet came and sat in her chair and served herself, was about to eat when she noticed maan looking at her completely lost! she snapped her fingers, maan again came back to reality, surprised. he dint understand what was going on. he looked left and right. geet unable to control laughed at him while he dint notice.

geet: khaana kayiye maan.

maan smiles with confusion and looks at his plate. he became dull seeing at the food. geet had served him enough food to fill 3 persons. he slowly looked at her yet more confused. she was grinning at him.

geet: khao khao, tum mere guest ho. khathirdaari main koi kamhi tho nahin hai na???

geet was feeling like laughing at his state but controlled. maan gave her a fake smiled and looked at her food wondering how he would complete it??? geet ate silently watching him, controlling her laughter. maan started off half hearted but the food was so good that he completed everything in 15mins. geet stopped eating and watched him in astonishment. when maan was done, fully content....

maan: geet kuch meeta nahin hai kya???

geet was gaping at him. this time maan was grinning at her, the look on her face made him laugh. seeing him laugh, geet too started laughing. they laughed together for a few minutes until their stomachs hurt. they finally stopped and looked at each other smiling.

geet: tumne itna saara khaana kaise khatham kiya???
maan: it was damn good food, i just couldnt stop.....

geet smiled at him nodding. he too smiled back.....finally he went for his stake....

maan: geet kya tumne mujhe maaf kiya???

geet's smile vanished, she became dull. maan noticed it understood her feelings, afterall he was rude to her.

maan: geet, mujhe patha hai ki mujhe tumse aisa baath nahin karna chahiye tha, par gusse main patha nahin ki maine kya kya boldiya tumhe. plz mujhe maaf kardo.

geet looks at him surprised but she showed no reaction on her face....

geet: ek shart pe....
maan: kaho???
geet: aap phir se kisi bhi ladki ke saath aisa kabhi bartaav nahi karenge, it hurts!!!

maan loved her modesty. he looked at her, this time with respect and nodded to her for an "yes". she smiled at him.

geet: tho phir maine aapko maaf kiya.
maan: thanks geet!!!

maan looked at his watch, it was almost 3pm. his grandparents would be waiting for him. he looked at her, apprehensive. she nodded to him understanding his situation and spoke.

geet: daadu aur daadi aapka intezaar kar rahe honge na???
maan(smiling): haan geet, mujhe ab chalna chahiye....
geet(feeling a bit sad): teek hai....
maan: thanks for the lunch, it was gr8. bye, take care.

with that he left for his home. geet kept looking at the direction he went. maan did turn back to look at her once and smiled. geet smiled back and he was gone.
