Chapter 107: The Return of the Arabian Nights – 2
"So, what did Gauri have to say about this?" Rathan asked as Shiv parked the car near the venue that was their destination for the night.
"About what?" Shiv asked casually as they got out of car.
"Wait… you didn't tell her that you're throwing me a bachelor party?"
"Are you on crack? Why the hell would I that? In case you missed it, my wife is pregnant. And she's temperamental to begin with. Telling her that I'm throwing you a bachelor party is like beating a hornet's nest with a baseball bat. And believe me, it's been a long and hard road to get here, but I've finally come to the wise and sane conclusion that I'm happy only when she's happy."
"Ah, I see… so, what you're saying is that you're afraid of your wife and so you lied to her."
"I said no such thing. What I said was that what she doesn't know won't hurt her. I told her that we are just going out with the guys. Which is entirely true. We are going out with the guys. There is no drunken debauchery on the cards for the night, now is there? So, this will officially be the most boring bachelor party ever thrown. But hey, that's the price of love and marriage. And since we are all on the same page, I doubt that anyone in our group will miss the aforementioned drunken debauchery."
"I see. So, this is a crime of omission rather than an outright lie." Rathan refused to be dissuaded.
"Did you tell Senna where you're going?" Shiv asked now, annoyed.
"Of course. She told me to lay off the tequila and to not drink anything off of anyone's belly-button no matter how they much they beg me."
"Have I told you how much I like Senna. Girl has a good sense of humor."
"Oh, and Gauri doesn't?"
"Gauri has an excellent sense of humor. In fact, it probably involves carving out the belly button that offers me a drink with a steak knife."
"She is a feisty one." Rathan laughed his approval.
"That she is. I never thought that she would be the kind that would be possessive. And that too over me."
"It's funny how that works out, isn't it. Possessiveness is usually such an ugly trait."
"Usually… except in her…" Shiv smiled.
"I never thought you of all people would say that."
"Did you ever think that I of all people would get Gauri?" Shiv asked in return.
"Good point. I honestly never did, even though it was so plainly obvious to anyone who knew you well that she's all you've ever wanted."
"I would heartily deny that statement simply because of the cheesiness factor…" Shiv began quite emphatically and then petered off as he added, "if it weren't true."
"That's what I thought." Rathan said just as they saw Shashank pull up in the spot right next to them.
After all the misconceptions between him and Gauri had been cleared up, one of the first things she had done was set up a double-date with Shashank and Thalia. He hadn't resisted, especially because he had really wanted to see the interaction between Gauri and Shashank just to convince himself that she was all his, with no remnant feelings for Shashank. But he had been wrong. Almost immediately after dinner had started, he had realized that Gauri loved Shashank. But it was a genuine, pure, and earnestly unromantic love that flowed from a different part of her. He had still had been jealous of the easy camaraderie between them, the way that she smiled as soon as she saw him, the way they seemed to be able to understand each other even without saying anything. But half-way through dinner he had noticed what was really different about how she was with Shashank. Shashank got only that part of her that was kind and good and sweet, whereas he got all of her. All her feistiness, her passion, her anger, her joy, her wittily sarcastic quips… everything from her hair-tossing, finger-pointing, and haughty eye-rolling to her knowing glances, trembling lips, heating skin, and quickening womb… And he wanted all of it for all seven lifetimes..
In the midst of dinner, he had also noticed how different Shashank was with Thalia. In all the time that he had seen the guy when Gauri was still dating him, he had always been of the opinion that Gauri only picked Shashank because she could run roughshod all over him given how tame he was. Observing him during dinner, Shiv had noticed that while Shashank was still as gentle-natured as ever, there was always a flicker of fire… and something else… in his eyes whenever they happened upon Thalia. There had been one point during dinner when Shashank had reached behind Thalia to fix the back of her collar. Thalia had not expected it and for a moment she had not been able to contain a jerk of surprised pleasure, which she had quickly covered with a cough fit. While Gauri turned busy offering water to Thalia and asking if she was okay, Shiv had noticed the look that had come over Shashank's face. He knew that expression. It was the same one that he had had the day before when his hand had accidentally grazed Gauri's waist when she came to put a piece of toast on his plate during breakfast. Her belly has sucked in reflexively on an in-breath at his innocent touch and just like that, his head had filled with erotic images of what he would do to her naked body when he got a moment alone with her.
And then he had finally been at ease.
And so when Shashank got out of the car now, there was no awkwardness in the greeting that Shiv offered him. "Hey man, thanks for coming."
Shashank closed the car door behind him with a smile and shrugged. "Thanks for having me."
Two more cars pulled up in rapid succession just then. Rathan called out first to say, "There's Dhruv" before Shiv added, "And there's Maan and Vikram Khurana"
