Has Shanky heard of something called as a chemist/drug store? When in need of meds you go to the store to buy them and do not call on married-friends-with-husbands-who-think-their-wife-is-in-love-with-you! What is wrong with the dude seriously.

Chapter 88: Sangeet – Part 1

Nirosha was in one of the rooms upstairs changing, along with Neela. They were almost done when there was a knock on the door and Gauri announced herself before walking in.

"Hey girls, you ready? It's already crowded downstairs."

Neela was having trouble pinning her sari in place and before Nirosha could help, Gauri offered. Neela looked surprised at first, but then gave the pin over to Gauri. In the midst of it, Neela's phone rang and she picked up to ask, "You're here?"

Nirosha knew then who was at the other end of the line.

"Great. We'll be down in a few." She heard Neela say before she hung up.

Gauri was the one who asked, "Was that your brother?"

Neela nodded before looking over at Nirosha.

"Nirosha. Aarya just parked the car and is coming in. If you are done, maybe you can find and show him around. He's never been here before."

Nirosha was sure that they were plenty of people downstairs who Aarya knew, including Dhruv, so she just smiled now at Neela's ploy before nodding and walking out the door.

Once Nirosha left, Neela turned around to see Gauri bending down by her feet to adjust the pleats on her sari.

"Gauri! Don't do that. You're pregnant!"

"Yes, pregnant. Not an invalid like everyone seems to think I am!" She refused to get back up without completing what she was doing and Neela marveled a bit at the fact that she could do such a thing to a woman who had cried to her about her husband just six months ago.

"Don't you feel strange to be around me?" she asked suddenly, giving in to the urge to speak her mind in a way that she seemed to do around this woman, despite the fact that she didn't know her well.

"I would think it would be stranger for you, don't you think?" Gauri asked.

Neela didn't know what to say to that. When she didn't reply, Gauri took her hand in hers. "Neela, I am pregnant. It's a far cry from the girl who told you on her wedding day that it's okay for you to pursue a relationship with her husband. If anyone should feel strange or feel like a hypocrite, it's me. You're the one who's been so gracious about the whole thing."

She said it so matter-of-factly that Neela was once again at a loss as to how to respond. So, once again, she spoke her mind before thinking it through.

"I can see why Shiv would fall for you."

"Why is that?" Gauri finally looked surprised.

"You don't seem like a woman who is fazed easily. I think he needs someone like that to not feel like he's smothered."

"Neela, you don't know the half of it. I don't think there's anyone else in the world who fights with him like I do."

"Maybe that's the way to his heart."

Gauri wasn't sure whether it was a wistful tone she heard in Neela's voice, so she paused for a moment to approach the matter with some finesse rather than her usual bluntness.

"Neela, are you…" Finesse was apparently not her thing, because she couldn't think of a subtle enough way to ask and ended up letting her question hang in the air.

Neela took pity on her and answered anyways. "No, I am not still pining after Shiv. Don't worry."

"I didn't mean…"

"I know what you meant, Gauri. And I assure you, it's nothing like that. Besides, I see now what Shiv looks like when he is in love. And it's not the same as how he looked at me… or really any other girl for that matter."

"You mean, when he looks like he wants to strangle me? Or throw me out the window and into the garbage? Or feed my carcass to the vultures?"

Neela looked taken aback for a second before she burst into laughter.

Gauri laughed as well and when they finally took a pause she added, "Besides, I think I have seen a man in the crowd who's been looking that way at you for a long time…"

Neela stopped laughing only long enough to ask, "You mean, like he wants to get me in a choke-hold, throw me in the dump, and have scavengers feed on my remains?"

It was Gauri's turn to pause and look at Neela in wide-eyed surprise. "Girl, you hide that sense of humor well under all that pretty shyness and graceful coyness that make half the men around you want to carry you off into their lair to make you their queen… well, that and to have their wild way with you…"

Neela laughed harder now. "God, you say the craziest things!"

"Yea, so I've heard once or twice…" Gauri joined in. "Good thing Shiv is used to me. Otherwise, Lord knows what would have happened."

"Oh please! Shiv would take you any which way. In fact, I think you could be deaf, mute, lame, suffering from multiple organ failures, undergoing dialysis and chemo everyday, losing your hair, your memory, and your wits, and he would still think that you're the best thing that ever walked on earth."

"Wow! You have such faith in his love, Neela!"

"Hmm… yes…" Neela smiled. "Are you ready to go down?"

"As I'll ever be. I will have to see if my husband loves me as much as they all say he does!"

She winked at Neela before they walked out of the room together.

Devi...girl you can write..I'm sure you've heard that gazillion times! I just finished reading Love and Despair..and this one in three days while trying to squeeze in studying between the readings, and then i just had to read some parts over ..and over again, cause they were amazing! Thank god I have Fridays off along with the weekend :D
Why hadn't you written these "novels" when I was taking American Brit Literature when I had to read those other corny historical love stories as our independent readings..where every one dies at the end..well not everyone ..but still! I would have just told my prof, I'm reading an ebook written by Devi :P

And dude, all the things that come out of your characters mouth..especially the come backs and sarcasm, they are soooooo well thought out, obviously you're the voice behind it!!
btw ..if Gauri knows that Shiv loves her, why isn't she saying anything??
"Love is not love until love's vulnerable".. Shiv and Gauri really need to open up and they're almost there..[I think :/ ]
