Part 9:- Back to Square One

"Where's Armaan?" I asked as I raced downstairs, to see Rhea perched on the couch having a big slice of pizza...

"He's off to Nikki's....Said he wanted to spend more time with her..." Rhea said looking up at me... "And erm...He kind of mentioned that if you wanna go to the airport to see her off, you should call him..." Rhea continued slowly...

"Oh!" I muttered, clueless as to what to say...He didn't even ask before leaving...

"Bad fight huh?" Rhea asked looking at me sympathetically as I sat down next to her...

"Yeah...." My voice trailed off into a whisper...

"You alright? I heard about Sid..." Rhea gave me a sad smile...I nodded and smiled back...

"It had to happen..." I shrugged...

"You need Bro right now don't you?"

"I dunno...Even if I do, the point is he isn't here...So..." I shrugged...Rhea gave me a side hug...

"I'm gonna miss you!" Rhea said smiling at me...I hugged her and muttered a 'you too', which came straight from my heart...

"Shouldn't we wait for her call? I mean, you know her, she's pretty slow..." Nikki asked for the umpteenth time...Armaan rolled his eyes, exasperated...They were on their way to the airport....

"Niks, I left a message with Rhe... I told her to tell Munch-Riddhima...Riddhima, that if she wants to come, she can call me...I would have picked her up on the way..." Armaan sighed...He couldn't believe Riddhima could be so stuck up...Nikki had her heart set on Riddhima coming to see her off...But obviously, she wouldn't care enough....Armaan shook his head...

"Please don't get angry..." Nikki mumbled looking at Armaan's expressions...Armaan shrugged...

"I just can't deal with the way she behaves sometimes..." Armaan said quietly...

"She's going through a lot...Last night after the farewell party, she didn't even remember our apartment was empty...I mean she was actually returning to her room..." Nikki half smiled remembering the previous night...

"Really? I didn't know she was so bummed out about going back...Which is weird since India's her home..." Armaan frowned... He began feeling guilty...Maybe he hadn't been there for her as much as he should have been...

"Well I guess I know the reason she's so bummed out...But well..." Nikki gave him a know-it-all smile...Armaan looked confused...

"What'd you mean? Her break up right?" Armaan asked curiously...Nikki shook her head...

"No...Although that did certainly add it to it...But no..There's something else...Which some day you'll realize..." Nikki smiled again...Armaan looked clueless but didn't probe any further... "It's weird how you two claim to know each other, understand each other the most, but yet can't see something which is staring right in your face!" Nikki said after a while exasperated...

"You know Niks, I would ask what you're talking about...But you should save it for now...The person you were waiting for is waiting for you there..." Armaan pointed at a figure standing at a distance.....Nikki's head turned, and she jumped to get out of the car, as soon as the car stopped at the parking lot....

"Where the hell is she? Her flight is in an hour!" I sighed, waiting for Nikki at the entrance of the airport...I had asked Rhea to drop me off, since I didn't want to call Armaan...She was understanding enough to drop me off...

"Ridz!" A familiar shriek snapped me out of my thoughts...I smiled and ran to hug Nikki as I saw her racing up towards me....

"I knew you'd come...Your best friend wasn't sure though..." Nikki pulled me into a bear hug...

I looked at Armaan standing behind Nikki, nodding his head to acknowledge my coming there...I frowned...Why did he seem to think that Nikki meant nothing to me...I looked at him again and thought I saw something close to a smile cross his face...

"Of course I would come...I had to see you off!" I sniffed...I knew Nikki's silence meant she was crying too...

"I'm gonna miss you Ridz!" Nikki smiled sadly....I nodded and smiled back...

"Me too!" I sniffed....I saw Armaan roll his eyes from the corner off his eyes...

"Oh btw...I forgot to give you important news...The engagement might happen in Mumbai..." Nikki smiled...My eyes widened in excitement....

"Really? How? I didn't know I was so important to you! That you would shift the venue just for me, irrespective of another thousand guests...I'm touched..." I said dramatically to lighten the situation...Nikki laughed...

"No Drama Queen...Abhi's family's in Mumbai...His Uncles and stuff...He said it'd be more convenient to have the engagement there rather than in Delhi...But yeah, when I spoke to him about this, this evening, my first thought was YAY you can come!" Nikki exclaimed...I laughed and hugged her again...

"Ahem ahem...I think..I THINK....You should spare some attention to your chauffeur here..." Armaan rolled his eyes at the girly exchange between Nikki and me...

"Yah yah Mr. J...Don't be jealous...And know Riddhima will always come before you!" Nikki smiled deviously and winked at me...I giggled and looked at Armaan and my smile began to vanish...

Nikki walked over and hugged Armaan...I could make out how rotten he was feeling...I could read his expressions...

"I know Riddhima comes first in your life as well..." I heard Nikki whisper a bit too loudly...I gave a fake cough...The last think I wanted was another 'Armaan and Riddhima are in love' conversation to crop up...Especially in front of Armaan...

"Yah yah I'll stop..." Nikki turned to me and smiled...Armaan looked from me to her and raised his eyebrows, evidently clueless as to what was happening... "Anyway...Time to fly....Pun intended..." Nikki sighed...She hugged Armaan and me one last time and waved at us... "Bye...See you'll next month...I'll call you'll and tell you'll the details kay?" Nikki smiled...We nodded...

"Call once you get there!" I smiled and waved....

And with a final wave, she was gone....I couldn't help but remind myself that I was gonna be there in a matter of 5 days...

"Umm...Shall we go...?" Armaan asked once Nikki was out of sight...

"I'll take the cab, thanks!" I said seething and started walking off...

"Cut the crap, sit in the car, and stop annoying me..." Armaan said in a dangerously calm voice, which indicated a volcano about to erupt...One look at his blazing face, and I began walking towards his car, he followed behind...

The car ride was quiet and unpleasant as a whole...His heavy metal chants were giving me a splitting headache, but I knew better than arguing with him on that....

I could see him looking at me from the corner of my eyes...

"What?" I asked, sighing exasperated at his constant staring...

"Nothing...Didn't think you would come....Thanks..." Armaan mumbled guiltily...

"Okay, listen...Nikki is much closer to me than she ever was to you, so please don't say thanks and make my friendship with her a formality...And secondly, just because you are so rude to not even ask before leaving, doesn't mean I wouldn't at least turn up for the final goodbye!" I glared at him...Surprisingly enough, he didn't retaliate...

"I just did what you did today...Leave without me..." Armaan said quietly after a while...

"Yeah but you leaving may have made it seem like I didn't wanna come see her off...That's why she was so surprised...And you actually told her I wouldn't come...?" I asked infuriated...

"I thought you wouldn't....That's called sharing of thoughts between two friends..." Armaan grinned at me...I knew his tactics...He always smiled like a goof to annoy me till my last nerve...

"You know what...Just step on that bloody thing and get me home...I have to pack..." I said nonchalantly...I couldn't bear to argue any more with him...It was something I hated doing...

And abiding by my wishes, he did drive pretty faster after that...

I couldn't believe days were zooming by so quickly...And worse, I couldn't believe Armaan hadn't even attempted talking to me in the past 4 days, except things like "Can you pass me the pasta please?" and "Mum's calling you..."

"Didn't he care at all that I was leaving tomorrow?" I thought as I gazed at him, sitting across the table at breakfast...

"Oi, you ready to go?" Rhea called out and hopped into the living room, smiling broadly...I smiled and nodded...

"Yeah, I'll just get my bag..." I murmered...

"Where you guys going...?" Armaan looked at me, and then at Rhea, who I guessed was the more convenient option right now...

"I'm taking her out...She's leaving tomorrow in case you forgot...And since you wouldn't make any attempt at making her last few days here a little cheerful, I think I should do the honours!" Rhea glared at him....

"She's not dying..." Armaan mumbled quietly...I looked at him shocked...I got the answer to the question which was doing rounds in my head since days...

"Rhea...Forget it..." I said, getting over the shock of Armaan's reaction..."Anyway, I gotta come back soon yeah, cause I still have a few things to pack, and all those things I have to buy today...So we better leave now..." I mumbled and without glancing at Armaan, I began walking...

"Why? Why won't you let him know how terrible he's made your last week here for you? You're too soft on him sometimes..." Rhea muttered angrily while we drove to the mall...

"If he doesn't care enough, I'm not gonna force him! He's not one of those who needs forcing anyway...If he would have cared, he would have done something about it...So I get the hint..." I mumbled...

"Okay, as much as I hate Bro, you know this ain't true....Even a blind guy can see how much he cares for you and loves you...I'm sure he loves you more than Andrea, and I yet don't understand why she even exists in his'" I glared at Rhea to stop her...

"Please you don't start now!" I groaned and massaged my head...Would this issue ever leave me alone?

I groaned as I felt the surging pain in my feet...Rhea had made me walk through the entire mall, without any kind of break, for 4 whole hours...She finally decided to call it a day, when I cracked and told her to either step on it, or expect an embarrassing outburst in front of the entire mall!

"I can't believe you made me walk so much...I don't think I'll be able to walk for the rest of my life!" I groaned again, as we waited for the door to open...

"What? Okay, see when you shop, you should shop for quality stuff..." She said as we stepped into the house...

"Welcome back...How was shopping?" Aunty asked, smiling at us...

"For Rhea paradise..." I laughed....

"Don't lie, I know you loved it too!" Rhea winked at me and raced upstairs with her bags, I followed close behind with mine...

As I made my way to my room, I bumped into Armaan, dropping my bags in the process...

"Sorry..." Armaan bent down and picked up the bags, and before I could retaliate, walked to my room...

"Thanks!" I said nonchalantly, not looking at him...He nodded and made his way out... "Armaan can you do me a favour?" I asked before he closed the door...

"What?" Armaan frowned...I turned towards him...

"Since you haven't done anything other than ignore me this past week, at least try and not help me out in anyway, to make me feel like yeah, probably now you'll break the ice..." I walked towards the door and shut it right in his face....I knew he cared, but then why add to my miseries with such a behaviour?

Armaan began to say something, but before he could, Riddhima shut the door in his face...He lent his hand forward to knock, and then stopped...What would he say to her? She was right...He was behaving like a jerk...

But he couldn't muster the guts to talk to her...Nikki had made a point...Riddhima did come first for him...And he felt immensely guilty at not being there for her...But he yet couldn't understand why she was so upset at going back...Well maybe if he'd tried talking to her, he would have known...

"I'm such a pig!" Armaan threw himself on his bed and covered his face with his hands....Sighing, he thought of how he could make it up to his best friend in less than 24 hours, since she was leaving the next morning... "I deserve to die...." He mumbled sitting up...

"You're right...!" Rhea added as she walked past his room...Armaan rolled his eyes...

"Riddhima bacche kal aapki flight kitne baje hain?" Uncle asked at dinner....

"Subah 10 baje...So will have to reach by 8-8.30 I guess...." I replied...

"Okay, so we can leave by 7.30 tomorrow then..." I nodded my head, and smiled at Uncle...

"I'm coming!" Rhea exclaimed... "Don't leave without me!"

"You take an hour to get dressed!" Armaan said, narrowing his eyes... "It's not even like you'll wake up so early..."

"Yeah well, I unlike SOME people did make the effort of making Riddhima's last week memorable...I'm sure one last day won't hurt!" Rhea said, seething....I kicked her under the table to get her to stop talking...She pouted at me and shrugged...

"Rhea make it quick though...." Aunty saved the onset of another heated war of the siblings....I was pretty sure Aunty had guessed the tension between Armaan and me, but she hadn't shown any signs of knowing, for which I was grateful to her... "And Armaan do we expect you to be ready in the morning as well? We're all going..." Aunty turned to Armaan...

"Umm..." Armaan looked at me uncertainly, I pointedly looked at my food...

"It's ok...Everyone doesn't need to take the trouble..." I murmured, yet not meeting his eyes...It was weird how a small fight had led to this silent barrier between us...But then again, was it such a small deal? He hadn't really put me through a very nice situation in the past days, and nor did he once ask, or care to spare me a thought...

I got into bed, post dinner, feeling pathetic...Had it been 3 years already? I remember crying on this very bed, 3 years ago, because I was missing home, and Armaan had been there for me that time...Would the same happen once I got back? No it wouldn't be the same...Armaan wouldn't be there...Heck, he was a room away, and hadn't even...I sighed...Shutting my eyes, I counted numbers in my head to put myself to sleep...

I snoozed on my alarm for the third time, and finally giving up, I sat up on my bed, rubbing my eyes....It was 6.30, and I had to get dressed, pack a few things here and there, and then well...Goodbye...

Getting dressed, I raced downstairs to find Uncle, Aunty, and (to my surprise) Rhea, having breakfast...

"You actually woke up so early!" I said, genuinely touched, and hugged Rheafrom the back...

"Of course...I'll take half hour to get dressed though..." Rhea said, gulping down her juice...Without a word, Aunty silently pointed her hand towards the stairs, telling Rhea to hurry up...

"I'll hurry!" Rhea called out as she raced back upstairs...

"Umm Armaan?" I asked, trying to sound as casual as possible, but obviously failing...

"He's gone out to play....Will be back before we leave..." Aunty smiled at me understandingly...I nodded...

Having breakfast, my eyes kept wandering towards the door, but he didn't come...It was already 5 to half past 7, and we had to leave now...

"Rhea get down here!" Uncle called out... "Riddhima beta you have everything ready...Taken all your luggage and everything...?" Uncle turned to me...I nodded... "Great so shall we leave then...?" Uncle asked again...

"Umm, Armaan nai aaya..." I mumbled quietly...Rhea looked at me sympathetically as she heard me while coming down...

"It's ok, maybe we see him pull up as we leave...Cheer up!" Rhea smiled at me....I shrugged and nodded...Turning back again, I bid a final good bye to the house, which had been my home for 3 whole years...Sighing I made my way out, but no figure ran towards me as I sat in the car, no voice called out to stop me from going, and no Armaan came to say goodbye....
