Chapter 4: Head spinning Revelations

"Dude, Riddhima IS the legend. We call her CSW." He said with a chuckle in his voice.

WHAT?

I just gaped like a fish out of water. "What? How? She's so young! What did she do, sell her soul?" all my assumptions rolled out of my brain.

Shubhankar didn't laugh back "Well I don't know if she has a soul left, but she most defiantly didn't sell it." He shook his head like he was ridding himself of an unwanted thought. "Anyway, she finished school at17 with 2 years of research experience under her belt and graduated with a degree in forensic science when she was 19. She got hired on at the lab and earned the most certifications in the shortest amount of time ever. By the time she was 21, she was certified on almost everything in this building, which is extremely rare but it wasn't until she went to the field that we all saw her real talent, which is why we call her CSW." He informed me.

"CSW?" I inquired.

"Yeah, Crime Scene Whisperer. She can walk into a crime scene and just know where to find evidence. Think if it this way if you had to find one fish in a pond, what would you do if you had no idea what it ate or what depth it lived in?"

"Uh, drag the pond with big net?" I answered.

"Right, but in that process you'd bring up hundreds of fish you didn't need or want and have to sort through them and hope you found what you were looking for. Now imagine your boat in only so big so you can only cast your net a couple of times before you sink your boat with your haul, how good are your chances then?"

"I think they'd be bad." I said honestly.

"Now imagine that you could just know where that fish was. You could step up on the side of your boat, fire an arrow in the water and retrieve the fish speared on it'and it's the fish you're looking for." I nodded for him to continue "That's what Riddhima can do. She just looks at a scene and knows where to find stuff other scene techs would have overlooked. You can't bring every piece of a crime scene back to the lab so there is always the possibility that something is missed. Riddhima doesn't miss anything and with her history, she is impervious on the stand, no defense lawyer can claim she gives the cops a free pass."

Oh'my hopes of getting transferred away from Satan to the legend were dashes.

"So she's a genius?" I asked weary of the hold Satan had over these people.

"Yes, but she's not snotty about it. Just keep your head down and your shoulders up around here and you'll do fine."

I let out a breath in frustration. "Thanks man, I appreciate it." I left to resume my studies. I was in luck because when I got back to her office, it was empty. I spent the rest of the day in silence as I finished the second binder.

One more to go'

When I got home, I called Muskaan and told her about my day. She had been informing the rest of the family on what was going on here, and they were all placing bets on when Satan was finally going to attack me. I told her to put me down for 1000 for a week from now. I started in on the last monster of a binder, hoping to get ahead of the curve. There was no way I needed all this information just for a movie role. Thank God I had a really good memory, honed by years of remembering little details from scripts I read, or this marathon of information absorption would have killed me. I didn't need all this but this had become more than just training for a project; this had become a pissing contest, and I was determined that Satan wasn't going to break me.

I got into the office the next morning bright and early. I was going to finish this last binder today before lunch if my life depended on it. Unfortunately, Satan had also already arrived, dressed in her normal cast iron suit. I walked in to the office just in time to see her down a whole load of pills. After she had swallowed, she glared at me before hastily opening her desk drawer and pushing what looked like at least 4 prescription bottles into it, and closing it.

"What the hell are you doing here so early?" she hissed after hiding her pills.

"Ummm" I stuttered not quite knowing what to say after watching Satan pill popping "I just wanted to get this binder done before lunch." I finished sounding a little more put together.

"Don't skim, there will be a test after lunch. If you fail, you'll read the material again until you pass. I won't have some uneducated ilk around my equipment messing it up." She said a little less hostile'but still. Satan didn't wait for an answer but left to go sharpen her pitchfork somewhere else. When I was satisfied she wasn't coming back for a while, I opened her desk drawer. There must have been 20 prescription bottles in there.

Midazoliam

Paroxetine

Diazepam

Alprazolam Intensol

Alzapam

Escitalopram Oxalate

Meprobamate

I got on her computer to look up what the English terms for these drugs were.

Versed

Ativan

Xanax

Valium

Paxil

Lexapro

Equanil

All sedatives, depression, or anti-anxiety meds; and all of which can cause memory loss when combined with alcohol, or shit, even each other.

So that's why she doesn't remember.

Shashank had said "so that's how she dealt with it" which leads me to believe that something really bad must have happened that day, and it drove Satan to drink at a club after having taken too many meds. I suddenly feel guilty calling her Satan. Who knows what she's seen on the job? I think I may just have to call her Riddhima now. I hear yelling at someone down the hall, so I quickly close out of the internet window and take my position at my desk. The door flies open just after I open the binder to where I left off.

"You done with that yet?" she says surprisingly calm for herself, and now I know why I could get a smile out of her yesterday morning.

Medication.

Thank God I'd found her pill popping because her current demeanor would have made me thing that someone, somewhere in the world had divided by zero, and ripped a hole in the fabric of the universe. "Yes God, I was just reviewing some pertinent information." I lied smoothly.

"Very well" she pulled some papers out of a file cabinet and handed them to me "Answer these questions, if you pass, I'll get you set up." I nodded and looked at the questions. They weren't nearly as hard as I thought they were going to be, some were even multiple choice. She didn't leave me to do it by myself though but rather just pulled out her lunch and ate it. If you could even call that lunch, it was more like a snack. It was only flavoured yogurt and a banana. With the pharmacy she has swallowed this morning, you'd think she'd need more than that. By the end of the hour, I had finished the test and eagerly awaited the results.

I jetted to the cafeteria quickly, making sure not to stand in one place too long, lest the population inundate me again. I quickly grabbed a chicken sandwich and returned to the office where I find my test graded and on my desk. I feel like I'm in college again, waiting for my grade to be posted. I look at my test and find very little red ink on it. When I get to the last page I see my score'98/100 and the words "Good Job loser" written underneath it.

Well, at least it's something.

I look over to Satan'I mean Riddhima, and see that she's reading something on her computer with ear buds in.

"Riddhima?" No answer. I try again but relent and just knock on her desk. She looks up at me, clearly annoyed "What do you want?" she asks while pulling out an ear bud.

"Did I pass?" I motion to my test.

"No, I congratulated you because you didn't pass. Yes you passed." She said condescendingly.

"Thank you for your heart felt congratulations." I replied sarcastically "So what do you mean when you say getting me set up?"

She didn't say anything but rather just got up from her desk and walked out of her office. I didn't really know what I was supposed to do until I heard her yell out "You coming loser?"

Perhaps I should go back to calling her Satan.

I quickly caught up with her and she led me to a storage room with shelves of boots and clothes. "What are we doing in here?" I asked.

"What's your shoe size?" she barked.

"10 and a half." I say shortly. Without a further look, she walks over to a shelf, pulls down a pair of boots and shoves them at me. The pulls me to another shelved section with navy blue clothes

"Turn around" she commands. I feel weary because you're taught never to turn your back on an enemy. I feel her holding up some clothes to my back before spinning me around again. "These are your uniform. You don't touch, taste, smell, or see a crime scene without them." I just nod my head. "Come" she commands, and walks out of the room. We get to Shashank's office and again, she doesn't wait for permission to enter.

"Riddhima and Armaan, what a surprise." Shashank says kindly. I really wish he would train me.

"Your pet needs a locker." She hisses and without anything further, she leaves me with Shashank.

"I'm sorry to bother you again; I didn't know she was going to leave me here. Are you sure you wouldn't rather pair me with someone who won't make me bother you so much?" I ask him. It's not his fault his daughter is a hitler.

He just laughed "Yeah because you've run into so many people who aren't completely star struck who are capable of doing what you require. Shubhankar told me about Upadhyay's request." I cringe at the idea of having to follow her around.

"What about Shubhankar? He seemed like a nice enough guy." I lightly plead.

Shashank shakes his head apologetically "Shubhankar is in automotive, from what your producers told me, that's not what you need, otherwise, I would."

Damn

"Alright, show me where this locker is." I concede defeat.

While we're walking to the locker room, I ask the question I've been dying to. "Sir, why is Riddhima so angry at me? I mean, I've never done anything to her."

His shoulders slump'

"Riddhima wasn't always like that. She's been like that since the accident."

Chapter 5: Standing up to the Satan

Shashank didn't elaborate further on what the accident was. If I had to guess, I'd think she had brain damage or something. After he gave me a locker and the combo, I had to return to Satan.

"What's all this?" I asked when I got back to the office. There was a huge silver case on my desk.

"That is a basic forensic kit and one which you will have to learn more intimately than you know your own body. Did you notice all the pockets in the jump suit I gave you?"

"Yes God." I muttered still resentful of her authority over me.

"Good, now because I'm in a good mood today I drew you a picture of where everything goes. Absolutely everything in that case has to fit in the pockets of that suit, and you have to memorize what is in each pocket to the point where you can reach for the item inside it without looking." She said quickly. "Now take that case and go load your suit, don't come back until it's done."

I'm so sick of her telling me what to do without explaining why.

"Why?" I challenge her.

"Because in my world, when you find something, you don't want to take your eyes off it because if you do, the wind might blow it away. I don't want to have to wait for you to feel yourself up like a fool, looking for where he placed his pack of smokes, to find the tool you need to bag a piece of evidence." She said without looking up from her computer. Satan couldn't even do people the courtesy of looking at them when she spoke to them. "Get out and don't come back until it's done." She dismissed me. I took the case and returned to the locker room.

What I thought was going to be an easy task, was turning out to be the jigsaw puzzle from hell. Her map of where I was supposed to put things was actually pretty helpful but I don't know how she expected me to fit all this stuff in. After the fifth try, I got it all in…and it didn't look half bad. When I opened the case, I found a printed diagram of where everything was supposed to go but that was the worst attempt of the all. I think she was f**king with me because after I'd emptied out the entire case, I found her hand drawn guide. Good thing too because I'd have been completely lost without it.

I wonder what she was like before the accident.

When I got that done, I returned to her office but she wasn't there. I then noticed it was past 7 o'clock, so I just went home.

"Hey Muskaan" I said after she picked up on the fifth ring "catch you at a bad time?"

"No, I just ran from the sewing room. How was Satan today?"

"Well I passed the test she gave me and she gave me a uniform. I think she only swore at me five times today…oh yeah and I caught her swallowing a whole load of pills, all of which turned out to be anti-anxiety meds and depression meds." I vented. She was such a mystery, and no one seemed willing to let me in on the secret.

"Oh my god. Did she see you?"

"Oh yeah, that was the first time she swore at me today."

"Is there anything you can do? Perhaps get switched to a sane person?" she tried to console me, I knew there was nothing to be done about it.

"No, it's only a month. It's not like it offends me or anything. I don't care what she thinks of me. I'm actually starting to have fun thinking of ways I can irritate her; it's how I amuse myself when I'm hiding from the other people at the lab."

"Who else did you meet?" she asked. I told her about Shubhankar and everything he said about Satan. I also told her about Upadhyay. After that she told me about how her current period film costumes were holding up. She said Anji hadn't been feeling well lately and that Atul was concerned. She's tough though, it's Atul who is the baby out of those two when it came to illness. I finally called it a night and promised an update on the Satan assault bet.

I got into the lab a little late today, hoping to catch Satan after her morning pill popping session. When I got to the office she wasn't there, but there was a note on my desk.

"Meet me in prints"

Thanks to Shashank, I actually knew where that was. I walked in and saw three people. One of which was Satan.

"You're late" she barked.

"Didn't want to interrupt your normal morning activities." I said back sickly sweet. The other two people in the lab looked at me with their mouths hung open.

"How considerate of you asshole since it's MY office." She seethed back. The other two people in the room slinked away, probably not wanting to be any closer to Satan's wrath than I did.

"Well now that you've scared away the indigenous life, do you want to tell me what I'm doing here?"

And then it happened again…Satan smiled.

"Fingerprinting. Come." She said stifling her smile.

She spent the next three hours teaching me about fingerprints. Dry, latent, contaminated, raised, the list seemed endless. Then she talked about how to lift prints chemically with things like glue fuming, Ninhydrin, Diazafluorenone, and Vacuum Metal Deposition. She was actually marginally pleasant; which surprised the hell out of me.

She didn't allow me in her office again for lunch, so I actually went out to a SubWay around the corner from the lab. The line was long but it was better than the cafeteria food I had been eating for the past few days.

"Oh. My. Gosh." I heard a teenage girl's voice say to my side.

Shit

I didn't turn, I knew what was coming.

"Naina, its Armaan Malik!" she squealed. I reluctantly turned my head only to find a group of high school looking girls with their cell phones out pointed at me. The rest of the patrons of the restaurant now turned towards me. I knew I wouldn't last here so I quickly turned around and headed for the sanctuary of the lab. I had to run, because they decided to chase me. I found comfort when their screams of "Armaan I want to marry you." were getting quieter and quieter.

Yeah, I'm 30 years old and even if I was your age…you couldn't pay me to touch you.

I hurried into the building and watched them run past.

Thank god.

I resigned myself to the fact that my options were either order in, or cafeteria food. I got the same chicken sandwich I'd had here before. It was the only thing that seemed remotely appetizing. I sat in the cafeteria in the most sheltered spot I could find.

"Hey could I get an autograph?" A man's voice roused me. I let out a defeated breath.

"Sure, who's it for?" I say casually, using my years of acting experience. I really just want to eat in peace.

"It's for me, Jitendra Prasad." He says like a kid in a candy store. I sign the piece of paper he thrust at me, no doubt to either covet like its lost scripture, or to sell online.

Not two minutes later, another chick sits down at my table.

"Hey tiger." She sasses.

Tiger, Really?

"Hey" I don't even pretend to be cordial.

"I'm Shweta, you're Armaan, right?"

What gave it away?

"So, what are you doing after work tonight? A bunch of us are going out to Geofrey's. Wanna come? I'm sure I could make it worth your while." She says trying to make her voice seductive.

Stupid amateur, she should go ask Meera for pointers.

"No, I'm fine, now if you'll excuse me." I grab my sandwich and head for the sanctuary of the office. When I get to the door, I hear the most sublime music. It sounds like my favorite choral piece.

It can't be.

I open the door to see Riddhima in her chair, with her eyes closed, looking like the music is making her float away. I don't know if she's heavily medicated or just lost in the music. This piece…St. Matthew The Passion, has the same effect on me. I called her Riddhima because she looks like Satan, but feels like Meera.

"Riddhima" I call out softly, and the spell is broken.

"No, my hour isn't up yet. Get the hell out." Satan hissed before I even got a chance to sit down.

I've had it today.

"Could you please just give me a break and let me hide from the masses here? Can I please just have a place where I can eat in peace? What the hell have I ever done to you to make you so vile towards me? All I want is to complete whatever training you have for me, and perhaps have a fun time learning it, but no. You have to put me down at every turn. What the HELL, did I ever do to you?" I yelled, finally reaching my tolerance limit for the day.

With her most icy glare to date, she stood up very calmly, walked over to me, and shut the door behind me. Then I saw what Medusa would have looked like to Perseus "Because every breath you take here is time I could have spent on real cases. I know real problems don't mean anything to losers like you, who glamorize violence for a living, so I don't expect you to understand my distain for your entire profession. You're not the one who knows that every second I have to hold your hand, for nothing nobler than the pursuit of entertaining the masses, is a second I could have been linking a date rapist to other crimes so he actually gets prosecuted, or processing the murder scene of a child. No, instead of getting those results into the hands of the police as soon as I can, so they can file charges before the suspect is in the wind, I'm here, teaching you how to look good pretending. That's what you've done to me."

Oh

She turned, returned to her desk, and put some ear buds in…but didn't tell me to leave. I sat down at my desk and finished my lunch in silence, thoroughly tongue lashed. It wasn't long before I hear the rattle of a prescription bottle. I didn't turn around, I didn't need to. I knew what she was doing. While I ate, I thought about what she said. If Shashank had thought that my being here would endanger cases or anything, I'm sure he would have paired me with someone less vital than the Crime Scene Whisperer. There's something else going on here, the presence of meds just reinforces that idea. I finished my lunch and tossed the wrapper in the garbage. She was stoic, just looking at her screen. I knocked on her desk and she pulled out an ear bud.

"You ready to get started again?" I said masking whatever hostility I could. She didn't nod, but rather just got up and walked out, expecting me to follow as usual. We spent the rest of the day in icy silence, only speaking when she needed to tell me something. She taught me how to dust for prints on some practice items, how to lift them with print tape, and put them on to cards. After that we covered how to label the cards with all the information the lab tech would need. The person who collected them from the scene, wasn't the person who matched them in the lab; so the field tech had to make a drawing of the item the print was lifted off of and where on the item the print was. Thus giving reference to how the suspect handled the evidence.

The end of the day couldn't come soon enough and I was glad when it was over.

We spent the next day doing fingerprints. Vacuum metal deposition was the hardest but necessary for the Delhi climate. It works best with prints that have been exposed to harsh climate conditions and can work of semi-porous surfaces. It's good to know this being that I know fingerprinting will be a fairly prominent type of evidence in the film. Satan was almost mute most of the time. I did find out that my name was indeed "loser".

Ah, the weekend…I thought it would never come.

One week down, three to go.

Hey. 😊
I just read your ff and I think you have done a wonderful job. The story line is different and also the story has been penned down very well.

What really suprised me was that Ridhima doesnt remeber Armaan from the night before. Is it pretence or is it genuine? She wasn't drunk that night was she?... And am really intrigued by Ridhima's behaviour.

Hope my questions get answered soon ie please update. šŸ˜‰

Well, okaay... I just read parts 4 and 5 and I now understand why Ridhima did not recognise Armaan that morning. It was the pills. But the question that still remains unanswered is why is she behaving the way she is?!

Anyways, both the parts were fab! And I like the way the story is developing. I was wondering if you could tell me how many chapters this ff is going to have?

And am definetly not leaving without saying: please update soon. I know you do update very very regularly, but I still have to just say it... c'mon am a reader; all readers say it. 😃
