*RING RING*
"Hellooo." Anjali said as she picked up the phone.
"Hey, it's Atul."
"Oh, Atul, hey! What's up?" Anjali said excitingly.
"So I was thinking, if you don't have any plans tonight do you want to go out for dinner?" Atul asked.
"Yeah sure, I'm free. Plus, I'd love to visit a restaurant here in this 'amazzing' city of yours as expressed it last night."
"Ok, so I'll meet you outside the main quarters at 7. Don't be late, I hate late comers."
"Riddhima!" a voice called. I jerked out of my thoughts and turned around to see Armaan walking my way.
"Hey, you going to the library?" he asked.
"Yeah, are you following me?" I said sarcastically.
He laughed. "No, I got better things to do you know but right now I'm going to the library too. Need to read a few books. You know how it is'" he trailed off.
"So have you heard of the pond around here, is it true there's actually one?"
"Yeah it's true, it's like this narrow river which has a tiny bridge over it. I haven't seen it in person but I did ask one of the professor's when I moved here. I had the intention of checking it out but I never got the chance."
"It's sounds so cool! How cool is it there's actually a river here!"
"Why don't we check it out tonight? I don't think anyone's going to be there. Everyone I ask seems to already have plans so whatcha say new girl?"
"Sure new boy, let's do it tonight." I said enthusiastically.
It was just a casual outing so I wore a caprice and a sleeveless top. I quickly locked the door and made my way downstairs and I saw Anjali all dressed up.
"Anjali, why are you all dressed up?" I wondered.
"I tried calling you but you weren't picking up. Atul's taking me out for dinner. Isn't that great?" she said happily.
"I was in the library, that's great!"
"Woman are you ever going to go anywhere else besides the library?" Anjali said, nodding at the same time.
"Yeah Armaan and I are checking out that pond thing we were talking about the other day."
"Thank god you're going somewhere! Sapna went out too, her sister picked her up for this family thing. Anyways I see Atul, I'll see you later darling. Have fun! I want details!" she said. She gave me hug and left with Atul.
"Shall we go too?" Armaan said creeping up behind me.
"Yeah." I smiled.
Around the campus were signs which showed us the way around this huge campus. It was a pretty chilly night and it made me regret the choice of clothes I wore. At least Armaan had a sweater on; he probably knew it would be cold, considering he's been living all his life.
"So have you ever dated anyone?" Armaan asked, looking away at the same time.
"Nope, you?"I asked looking at him.
"Na. May I ask why haven't you dated anyone?"
"Well I guess it's because haven't found 'the one' yet. I would want to spend the rest of my life with the person I date." I replied.
"But if you don't try then how will you know?" he asked.
"Hey, can ask you the same thing too you know. What's your story? I mean any girl would do die to date a guy like you!"
"Would you?" he said looking at me.
"I-I-I don't know." I stammered.
"Then I guess you're so called 'theory' is wrong." He said smiling at me.
"You still haven't answered my question, why aren't you dating anyone?"
"Well loads of reasons. One pretty much relates to you. You know that feeling you get when you spend time with a person and you're starting to fall for them? When I feel the same, I'll know it's her and you know what happens after that. You know how most guys are, they just keep hitting on girls blankly. I'm just not that guy. In fact, I don't want to be that guy."
"So Armaan is a civilized guy huh?" I said sarcastically.
"Obviously." He said slyly. "Riddhima, there's the river!" he said softly, looking at it.
"Wow." I whispered.
The 'wow' barely came out of my mouth. There were no words to describe this place. It was beautiful! It was a short river but it was pretty wide. There were a few ducks going from one end to another, as if they were playing amongst themselves. Around the river were loads of trees and the aspect of the landscape that really made it stand out were the fallen leaves from the trees which were scattered everywhere. The place wasn't lit up much which was perfect. Like Armaan said there was even a tiny bridge over the river. It looked like a typical scene in Italy. A few benches were placed too here and there.
"What do you think?" Armaan asked.
"It's beautiful!" I whispered.
"Thought you'd like it, let's sit down under the tree there." he pointed.
"So you must like quiet places like these? You're probably those beach types." He commented.
I giggled. "You got that right."
"Do you have any siblings?"
"Yeah, just a younger brother. You?"
"Nope, don't have much of a family for that matter."
"What do you mean?"
"When I was two years old me and my parents spent the summer at our beach house and at that time my mom was pregnant with her second child. It was supposed to be a girl." He took a deep breath and continued. "One night we were walking on a road and this car with a drunk driver was approaching us in full speed. No one realized it because the car headlights were off and it was pretty dark as there weren't much street lights. I saw the car coming and I tugged at my dad's pants to warn him but by the time it was too late." He stopped for a while. "My dad pushed me and my mom away. He sacrificed his life for us." He looked at me with pain in his eyes. "It wasn't over yet. When my dad pushed my mom, she landed on her stomach and well she had a miscarriage. Two lives were lost that day."
"I-I-I-I'm sorry." I whispered.
"It's ok, can't take back our past can we?"
"How is your mom?"
"She tries living each day like nothing happened but by the end of the day she fails. She was a lively person before the accident but after that, she totally lost herself. My mom and I are very close. We tell each other everything but the accident is still fresh in her mind."
For a few minutes we were both silent. Neither of us said anything. I didn't have anything to say, what could I say? It was so sad. Times like these I think how lucky I am I'm blessed with such wonderful family. I couldn't see myself in Armaan's position.
"Do you know why I got angry at you the first day, when you were looking for your class?"
I shook my head and looked at him.
"16 years from that day, we lost everything." He whispered. "I was just upset. All my friends' dads were dropping them off and giving the 'goodbye for now' speech and hug that day. When I saw it I just felt the absence of a father in my life. I'm sorry for taking it out on you."
"Armaan, it's over. Don't think about what happened that day."
"I've never said this to anyone, not even my best friend Atul. He thinks my dad died of a heart attack."
"Why did you tell me then? You've only known me for two days."
"I guess I just feel a sense of comfort in telling you."
I smiled at him and looked at the ducks.
"I've never had such things happen in my life. The worst thing that probably happened to me was having a sprained ankle during a football match."
"Well, I hope such things don't happen to anyone." He said.
We continued talking about out past and we started playing 20 questions. We could ask each other anything and we had to reply. I had to admit it was fun!
"Are you feeling cold?" he asked.
"Very." I said as my teeth chattered.
He stood up and took of his sweater.
"Wear this, it's comfy." He said cheekily.
"Thanks but you're wearing something pretty flimsy yourself. I'll be fine."
"Don't worry; I'm used to this weather anyways."
He was right, this sweater was comfy and not to mention the fact that I wasn't shivering anymore. Our night continued with us sharing stuff and moments of silence.
"I think we better get going, it's 2 in the morning." Armaan pointed out.
We took our time in walking back and he walked me to my room.
"Hey wait, I need to give you back your sweater."
"Give it back anytime especially now that we'll be seeing more of each other. Right?"
"Yeah, I'd like that. I had fun tonight, goodnight." I said.
He smiled. "Goodnight." He said and walked off.
Since I didn't feel like changing I went straight to my bed and quickly pulled the blankets over me. His sweater was so soft and cozy to wear. I couldn't wait to go out with him again! Though it was fun I felt like I meant something to him when he told me about his dad. Might sound stupid but the fact that we barely know each other and he told me was just a nice feeling I guess.
