Part 12

Geet left the fifth floor doctors locker room after she had pulled on her white lab coat and placed her stethoscope in her pocket along with a few pens. She headed towards the elevator as she secured her badge on her coat. It took a minute for the elevator to arrive so she took that time to look through her schedule for the day. It was back to business as usual which meant she was back to her usual floor, Labor & Delivery and NICU. She had two scheduled C-Sections for the day, but they weren't until much later. Since she wasn't needed on the ER staff anymore, she came dressed to work like she usually did – NOT in scrubs.

Geet had always been a complete girly-girl. She'd loved dressing up and putting makeup on. She loved to wear skirts and heels. She hadn't been able to do that a lot when she'd first started as an intern and then during her residency because she was constantly running around and on her feet. However, now that was not the case. Sure, there were days where she did have to run around and be on her feet. For days like that, she always had a pair of hospital clogs and a few pairs of scrubs in her locker.

Today she was dressed in a grey and black A-line skirt, with a white blouse and had on black pumps. She'd left her hair open because it had still been wet when she'd left the house that morning. Her makeup was at a minimum with simple eyeliner, mascara, face powder and some lip-gloss.

Making sure her pager was on and attached to her skirt, Geet exited the elevator and walked down the hall to the ER department. While she didn't have rounds in the ER on this day, she still had a patient in the ER that she had to check up on.

"Good morning Nurse Leslie," Geet called as she got to the nurses station.

"Morning Doctor," Nurse Leslie said.

Nurse Leslie was a well trained nurse who not only knew what her patients needed but also what her doctors needed. That is why she handed Geet Naina's chart without her even asking.

"How is our patient?" Geet asked as she flipped open the chart.

"She's doing better. Still had some difficulty sleeping so I gave her a sleeping pill a few hours ago. She's sound asleep now," Nurse Leslie informed.

"What about her family?" Geet asked.

"Well…let's see…her brother and his wife went to a hotel just a few hours ago. He asked me to call him if anything changed or if there was an update……Oh and the friend's been sitting in the waiting room most of the night and just stepped out about 30 minutes ago," she informed Geet.

"Ok," Geet said.

"Speaking about this patient, we have a problem," Nurse Leslie said.

"Problem? What? What happened?" Geet asked suddenly concerned.

"Dr. Adler is insisting that we transfer the patient to another floor and admit her because he can't keep her in the ER any longer. He needs the room for other patients that are more critical," she said.

Dr. Adler was the ER attending who'd been on vacation but he was back and that meant it was all back to business. He was a remarkable doctor that ran the ER with such smoothness that it amazed even the governing head of the hospital. No matter what the emergency or how severe the case, there was never a hitch – ever.

"I've already arranged for her to be moved to the general inpatient ward, I just need your signature on the order," Nurse Leslie said as she held out the order form.

"No not GIP, move her to the maternity ward," Geet said as she wrote in the new order.

"Maternity?! Is she pregnant?" Nurse Leslie asked.

"No," Geet asked.

"Then why maternity?"

"Because I said so."

"Dr. Handa it is the beginning of my shift and I don't want to start it off with an attending pissed off at me," Nurse Leslie said as she stood up. "I have at least five more hours to go before pissing attendings off."

Geet chuckled at Nurse Leslie's comment because it was true. By the end of her shift there would be at least one or two attending doctors at their wits end with her because Nurse Leslie did her job very well and didn't care if others didn't like it. When she was ordered to do something by a doctor, she made sure it was carried out before she left. Nurse Leslie hated over flow.

"Well, lucky for you I'm the attending on L&D today," Geet said as she closed the chart and winked at her.

Geet was rewarded by Nurse Leslie rolling her eyes as she took the chart and got to work.

"You want to tell the family or should I?" she asked.

Geet stopped.

"You…you can call them," Geet said before walking off.

She knocked on Naina's room and entered quietly afraid that she might be asleep because Geet didn't want to disturb her.

"It's ok, I'm awake," Geet heard Naina call.

"I thought you had a sleeping pill," Geet said.

"I did but it didn't work. It's too quiet and every time I close my eyes I can hear his footsteps as he came up behind me," Naina said frankly.

"How are you feeling?" Geet asked as she began to examine the wounds.

"Still in some pain but I can handle it," Naina said.

Geet worked in silence as she looked under every bandage making sure that her wounds were healing and that there wasn't any infection.

"They are going to be moving you," Geet said.

"What? Why? I don't want another doctor," Naina said in protest.

"Relax Naina," Geet said as she put a hand on her shoulder, "They are moving you to my floor so that I can still follow you closely."

"Does Bhai know?" Naina asked.

"Not yet but the nurse will inform him," Geet said.

Geet checked the bandage that was over the large laceration that was on her left lower leg.

"Have you seen her?" Naina asked.

"Yes," Geet answered knowing full well who Nain was taking about.

"Have you met her?"

"No," Geet said.

Another of moment of silence passed.

"You'd like her," Naina said.

Geet looked up and frowned.

"She's very sweet and caring and understanding," Naina said.

Geet went back to the work at hand without making any sort of comment.

"Which makes it so much harder to hate her," Naina said.

"What?" Geet asked, shocked.

--------Flash Back--------

Naintara was sitting in her room sulking. It was the night of her first school dance. Usually, she was never excited about anything like that but this time it was different. The school she went to was a school for gifted students so the classes went all the way form first grade to twelfth grade. Since Geet had left, Naina wasn't much into anything but her studies because that was the one thing she could devote all her time to and not think of Geet. Also, the classes she took was advanced for her grade level so that meant she clocked a lot or hours at the library, away from home – away from her.

Sameera Maan Singh Khurana.

Just the sound of the name in her head gave Naina chills. It was never supposed to be any one as Mrs. Khurana. And if there ever was a person to be her brothers wife it was only Geet.

Geet Maan Singh Khurana.

It had a much better ring to it.

Naina was sulking because if her GG had been here at this moment, she'd know what to do.

Naintara was in the 8th grade, 14 years old and was the only girl in her classed asked to the dance by a high school boy. His name was Arjun Rathod, he was a 16 years old, and a sophomore at the school. Every year, they had the sophomore ball – a scaled down version of the prom which every sophomore looked forward to and every freshman girl hope she got invited to.

When Arjun had come up to her to ask her out, Naintara had been sure it was a prank that was only made to humiliate her. But, he'd been persistent and promised that it wasn't a prank and that he really wanted to go to the dance with her. When she'd asked him why, his response had been because she was the only girl who was focused on her studies and not how she looked or what her social status was. She as focused on school, her volunteer work and her future. All of those things attracted him to her.

At the insistence of the few friends she had, Naintara had reluctantly agreed to go to the dance – which was tonight, in just a few hours yet here she sat in her room tears brimming in her eyes because she couldn't go.

It was girl thing to get ready for the dance but none of her friends were going so she had to figure it out on her own. She didn't have a dress, no one to do her hair, no one to do her makeup and not one to calm her nerves.

She was just about to call Arjun and tell him she couldn't make it when there was a knock on her door. A few seconds later the door creaked open and Naina rolled her eyes at who entered.

Sameera – Sam – her brother wife of nearly five years.

"What do you want?" Naintara asked coldly.

"Well I hear you have a dance to go to," Sameera said.

"I did…I don't anymore," Naintara said as she hugged her knees to her chest.

"Why not?" Sameera asked concerned. "Did he cancel?"

Naintara could hear the sorrow and pity in her voice. She probably thought Naintara had been stood up.

"No he didn't, but I'm going to," Naintara informed her.

"But why? What's wrong?" Sameera asked as she sat on the bed.

"I'm not ready for the dance. I don't have anything to wear or anyone to help me get ready," Naintara said as she pouted.

"Well………If you don't mind, I'd be happy to help you," Sameera said hesitantly.

"Why? Why would you help me?" Naintara asked skeptically.

Naintara had been nothing but a brat to Sameera since her brother had come home and announced his marriage to her. Naintara didn't talk to Sameera for months, not even a single word. Then, when she'd finally began talking to Sameera, it had been short and rude. Maan had yelled at her for her behavior but Naintara didn't care. Sameera had taken the place in her life that had belonged to someone else, sure Naintara had brought it all on herself, but she didn't care. She couldn't see anyone else in the place that her GG was supposed to be.

For five years Naintara had been the rudest, brattiest and most annoying girl to Sameera, yet here she was offering help. Initially, Sameera had tried to gel with Naintara by offering to do things for her and help her on projects and things like that but Naintara never took up her offer. She's eventually stopped asking and stopped trying with Naintara. But today something changed.

"You're my sister-in-law, I'd love to help you," Sameera said with a smile.

"But why? You don't like me," Naintara said with attitude.

Sameera gave her a half smile, "I think you have it backwards, you don't like me."

Naintara felt her cheeks flush red as she looked down at her feet.

"Then why do you still want to help?" Naintara asked.

"Because, I know what it means to get asked to your first really dance," Sameera said. "It's a big day in a girls life."

Naintara looked at Sameera surprised at her comment.

"I remember when I was asked to my first dance," Sameera said she got up. "It was for my high school Winter Ball, freshman year. It was so frustrating to get ready on my own. I remember wishing that I had an older sister or something to help me. I cried so much that night when the curling iron burned my hair."

Naintara chuckled at the little tidbit.

"So what do you say, can I help you?" Sameera asked.

Naintara looked up and hadn't even realized that Sameera had been playing with her hair.

"I don't have anything to wear," Naintara said.

"Hold that thought," Sameera said as she left the room smiling.

She returned a few minutes later with a beautiful black dress. It was sleeveless with sliver sequined design in the middle of the empire waistline. It flowed beautifully.

"How did you…" Naintara began as she jumped to her feet and began to examine the dress.

"Well I saw it at the mall last week and I knew you had a dance. I wasn't sure if you'd like it or if you had a dress but I bought it anyway. Besides, a girl can never have too many black dresses," Sameera said with a wink.

And so began the process of getting ready. Naintara marveled as Sameera curled her hair and did her makeup. Naintara was floored when Sameera handed her a pair of real diamond earrings for her to wear. Naintara has refused initially but Sameera had been insistent so she'd finally given in.

"Baby, Master Arjun is here," Nakul informed about an hour or so later.

"Oh my God," Naintara said in panic.

"Don't worry," Sameera said as she ran her fingers through Naintara's hair to set it. "You look gorgeous. You're date is going to be floored."

"What if I stumble? What if I trip? What if I make an idiot of myself on the dance floor?" Naintara questioned.

"Relax," Sameera said to sooth her. "Just remember to breathe, have fun and be yourself."

They walked out after giving Naintara a once-over to make sure everything was in place.

"By the way, who is your date?" Sameera asked, "I asked Maan but he didn't seem to know."

Naintara stood in confusion. She knew she had just bonded with Sameera but she hadn't bonded enough to share her life with Sameera – not yet.

"Just a boy from school," Naintara said as she walked ahead.

Sameera had been right.

Naintara remembered to breathe, she remembered to have fun and be herself. It was a night she'd never forget. When she'd gotten home later on she'd been surprised to see Sameera still up. Sameera told her she was waiting to hear the juicy details of the dance and to see if Naintara had had fun. So she told Sameera some of what had happened at the dance. It was at that moment Naintara knew that as much as she wanted, she couldn't hate Sameera, because Sameera was making it impossible for Naintara to hate her.

--------Present--------

"You shouldn't hater her to begin with," Geet said after Naintara's comment. "She's part of your life Naina."

"I know…I know that…" Naina said.

Geet offered her a smile.

"I have to make rounds, but I'll come see you once you are settled in your new room," Geet said before leaving.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

He was at his wits end in worry, trying to figure out where she was. He tried to figure out where she was, which room or even which department but he had nothing. He had seen a bit of a heavy police presence, but that wasn't completely unusual especially at the early hours of the morning. Then, he had thought of going to ask the nurse but just as he was about to approach the desk, he saw a couple approach. He stood in the shadow as the man asked the nurse not to let anyone see patient Naintara Khurana and that if anything changed to call him immediately.

He had nearly punched a wall in frustration but stopped himself.

"I'm not going anywhere until I see you baby," he said to himself as a promise. "I'm not going anywhere."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It was just past the usual lunch hour when Geet had been paged to the ER for a consult on a patient that was brought in after an accident. The woman was 32 weeks into her pregnancy and was hysterical because she hadn't felt her baby move in hours. Geet first did an ultrasound to see if everything was ok and it was. Geet informed the mother that sometimes when the mother goes through a traumatic or stressful event, like the accident, the baby feels it too. Geet gave her a can of soda and promised to be by to check her shortly because often times the babies just needed a little bit of a sugar rush to get them kicking again.

Geet stood at the nurses station making her notes when she heard someone call to her.

"Hey Geet," came a familiar voice.

She looked up to see Dr. Mehta – Adi – coming to a halt where she stood.

"Hey Adi," she replied.

"How you holding up?" he asked as he put an arm around her and squeezed her shoulder.

"Just barely, but I'm doing ok I think," Geet said as she leaned into him for just a second.

At a distance they heard the commotion coming up the hall as a gurney was wheeled in.

"That's me," Adi said looking at the patient. "You know I'm here to talk if you need."

Geet smiled at him, "I know."

He gave her one last squeeze before heading off to the elevator. Once there, he turned back and smiled at her. It was a smile that reached his eyes to express how he was feeling. It was a smile that never failed to get Geet to smile, no matter what the situation. So, like she always did, Geet gave him a shy smile just as he boarded the elevator and disappeared.

Geet couldn't help but think about how that smile had brought light back into her life when all she saw was darkness.

--------Flash Back--------

Geet trudged along UCLA campus with her backpack over her shoulders and her laptop and a few books cradled in her arms. Checking her watch she picked up her pace. There was a meeting for all med students regarding some recent changes to the curriculum that would affect everyone. Geet walked into the large auditorium just as the dean of the medical college was introducing himself. She was fumbling with her belonging and scanning the room for a seat when her eyes fell on him for the first time.

He was sitting in the second to last row, on the aisle side. When their eyes met momentarily he smiled at her as if to simply be polite and acknowledge her presence. She gave him a fake, half hearted smile back as she cursed herself for not carrying another back for all of her books which were stumbling out of her arms at the moment.

She managed to secure the books between her arms and chest when she saw the man that had smiled at her get up and step back. As he stood next to the now empty chair, he used his hand to indicate that she could take his seat. Geet gave a smile of relief to him as she sat down. She knew it was rude not to say anything but the dean was talking and when the dean of you medical school spoke, you sure as hell didn't. Once she was settled with her backpack on the floor and her books in her lap, she turned to mouth a 'thank you' to him but was surprised when she didn't see him standing there anymore. She looked for him after but didn't see him either.

A few weeks passed and Geet was trying everything in her power to focus on school and stop thinking about Maan and all that had happened between them. Hell, she'd moved across the country to get away from all the hurt and pain. It was then a friend of hers suggested she join a sorority or club to take her mind off of the mess. Taking that advice, Geet showed up for the Desi Club introductory meeting that was held one evening. Geet felt odd and out of place because she didn't know anyone there, but everybody else seemed to know everybody – even the first year students.

"Alright everyone, partner up boy-girl boy-girl," the president of the club said.

And within minutes guys and girls were all paired off with the exception of Geet.

"Hold on…hold on…I'm here," came a voice from the door of the lecture hall where they met.

Everyone turned to see a tall, slim guy wearing glasses walk in and throw his things in a chair before joining them. When Geet looked at him, she knew he was the same guy that had given her his seat at the meeting. She was sure because she'd never forget his glasses.

"Sorry I'm late Maya," the guy said, "But final rounds took a bit longer than usual."

"It's ok," Maya, the president said, "Looks like you get to pair with the new girl."

When Maya pointed the guy in her direction, recognition dawned on him and he smiled – a smile that reached his eyes and expressed his joy.

"Hi, I'm Aditya Mehta…but my friends call me Adi," he said as he introduced himself and held out his hand.

Taking his hand, Geet introduced herself, "Hi…I'm Geet Handa."

"Alright people," Prakash, the vice president, said, "Take a good look at the person next to you because they are your partner for the rest of the years performances."

Geet's eyes went wide in shock.

"Performances?" she asked in panic.

The guy leaned in towards her and whispered, "We do a few performances and participate in the annual Bollywood collegiate competition."

"Competition!?"

Geet had only come to be part of the club and maybe watch a few movies or something not to be part of competition.

"Relax…I'm a great dancer," he teased.

"No…no…I can't do this," Geet said in worry. "I have to get out."

"What? And leave me to fend for myself without a partner?" he said in a sad voice. "After I gave you my seat…"

Geet gasped in shock as his attempt to blackmail her. Then he made the saddest face she'd ever seen like he was a little boy and someone just stole his puppy.

"Fine," Geet said, exasperated as she folded her arms over her chest.

The meeting rolled on with everyone giving suggestions for songs and themes for shows and what not. With each passing second Geet regretted her decision more and more. Once the meeting wrapped up and everyone was headed out, Geet went to speak to her partner.

"Thanks for the other day Aditya," Geet said.

"Yikes, Aditya," he repeated and made a face, "You sound like my Dadi. Adi…my friends call me Adi."

"We'll we're not friends," Geet said rather coldly, "So I'll stick to Adi."

She felt somewhat guilty for talking to him like that but she brushed it off.

"Ok," he said simply, "And it was nothing…happy to give up my seat for a pretty girl any day."

And so that had began their relationship. With each practice session they got to know more and more about each other. Geet found out that Adi was at the end of his final year of Med School and was already set to start is PhD program in cardiology. Geet didn't know when he'd gone from being Aditya to Adi but one day, all of a sudden the name just came out of her mouth.

It was the day before their big competition up in Berkeley and he was being rather childish while Geet wanted to dedicate every available second to practice.

"Come on, let's just do it one more time," Geet pleaded as she set the music for their part.

"Dude we've done it a million times. If I do it again my feel will fall off," he complained as he plopped down on a chair.

"Come on…" Geet said.

"No…"

"Please…"

"Nope…"

"Adi!" she suddenly yelled.

Her outburst caused Adi to sit up in his chair and look at her with a smirk.

"Adi huh? I guess we are friends now," he said with a smirk.

"No…that just…it just slipped out," Geet said in her defense as she grabbed a bottle of water.

"Admit it Handa, you consider me a friend," he teased.

"I do not…" she said.

"Liar…" he countered.

"Fine!" she said giving up.

When she looked at him he was smiling at her – the same smile – with a glint in his eyes. This time, for some reason, Geet found herself blushing as she smiled shyly herself.

"Now can we practice?" she asked to change the subject.

"Sure, all you had to do was ask," he said as he got to his feet.

That following evening, they stood on opposite ends of the stage right before their routine began. Geet was nervous and shaky and nothing she did calmed her nerves. She was jittery and floppy, afraid she'd forget all the steps. She looked across the stage and found him staring at her. He must have sensed her nervousness because he gave her thumbs up and smiled at her. Seeing him smile calmed her just a little. Once the music started, her nerves were on end again. She came out and danced across the stage to where he stood. Like all the other guys, he took her into his arms and swung her.

"Don't worry Geet, I got ya," he said with a smile.

The rest of the routine, she focused on his smile and got through it without so much as a fumble.

--------Present--------

Geet thought about how his smile had gotten through even the most difficult situations and the most horrendous days. No matter what the situation he always managed to make her feel better, whether it was with a hug, a corny and idiotic joke, or simply by smiling at her.

As Geet continued her notes, she didn't notice and a smile still played on her lips.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

He had been sitting in the main lobby of the hospital for hours – literally hours – just trying to get any kind of information on her. He was worried sick as to how she was doing. He didn't know if she was ok, if she was hurt or in pain. The mere thought of her in pain was killing him. Add to it the guilt that consumed him, he was shattered.

He was pacing the hall back and forth, back and forth, unable to sit still for even a minute. He jumped when his phone vibrated in his pocket.

"Hello," he answered.

"Are you still there?" the called asked.

"Of course," he replied.

"Arjun get out of there," the caller said, "You know what will happen if you get caught."

"Stop saying the same thing," Arjun warned.

"I have to because clearly you don't understand. If they find out that you are there to see her…that's it for you," the caller reminded.

"I don't care, I love her," Arjun argued, "I won't leave without seeing her because I know she needs me."

"Arjun please be reasonable…" the caller pleaded.

"I love her…" Arjun kept repeating.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maan glanced at his watch and saw that it just past 1pm. He walked with a brown bag filled with food for Naintara in one hand while Sameera was holding onto his other arm.

"You sure you don't want to eat anything else?" Maan asked.

She laughed.

"I'm fine," Sameera said. "I think I've eaten enough to hold me off for the rest of the week."

That caused Maan to chuckle.

"Thanks for getting the food for Naintara," Maan said.

"Of course. I know she doesn't want to see us now but she's probably hungry and the hospital food can't be appetizing," Sameera said.

They night before, they had gone to the hotel with the intention of coming back a few hours later because it was already well into the next day. However, both of then had fallen asleep out of sheer exhaustion. Maan had woken up just three hours later but didn't have the heart to wake his wife who slept soundly. After she'd gotten up he had received a call from the hospital informing him of Naintara's room change. The dressed, went to have brunch and picked up some food for Naintara on their way back.

"How are you feeling?" Maan asked.

"I'm fine, just a little get lagged I guess…the travel really took it out of me," Sameera replied honestly as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"This is why I didn't want you traveling across the country," Maan complained.

"Maan Singh Khurana," Sameera said as she lifted her head and stopped walking, "You so much as mention how you don't want me here I'll strangle you myself!"

"Hey, I never said I didn't want you here…I just said I didn't want you traveling across the country," Maan said. "Travel always takes it out of you."

"Ya ya…" Sameera said as she rested her head on his shoulder again, "Same difference."

"What room is Naintara in again? What floor?" Maan asked as he pushed the 'up' button for the elevator.

"Fifth floor, room 516," Sameera answered.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Geet had checked on all her patients and had just wrapped up a phone call with a colleague who needed some help with a diagnosis. Checking her pager she saw that she hadn't been paged. Checking her watch she figured she could stop in on Naina before her scheduled C-Section for a high risk pregnancy case she'd been monitoring.

She headed back into the hospital through the lobby.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

They had only been waiting for a few seconds when Maan heard someone callout to him.

"Mr. Khurana," the voice came.

Turning, Maan saw it was Naintara's friend – no, roommate – Yash.

"Yash, what are you doing here?" Maan asked.

"I just can't stay at home knowing that Tara is here. I just want to be here when she's ready to see us," he said.

Maan smiled at him and fell silent.

"You're a good friend," Sameera commented.

That caused Yash to smile.

The three of them waited for the elevator in silence.

"Oh my God," Yash said.

"What?" Maan asked when he saw that suddenly Yash looked like he'd seen a ghost.

Yash simply pointed his finger at a man about 100 feet away from them.

"What? Who is that?" Maan asked.

"Ar…Arjun Rathod," Yash said.

Maan's eyes filled with rage as the name clicked in his mind. Arjun Rathod, the man who'd raped his sister.

As fury raced through him he ran across the lobby and came up behind the man just as he said, "I love her…"

Maan whipped the man around by grabbing his shoulder and immediately punched him in the face. That one punch caused him to bleed from his nose and mouth, but Maan didn't care.

"Maan stop…" he heard Sameera say as she raced over.

Maan paid no attention.

"How dare you!" Maan roared, "How dare you hurt my sister!"

"What?!" Arjun cried as he crumbled to the floor.

"I swear I'll kill you…" Maan yelled.

"Maan please…" Sameera pleaded.

"You messed with the wrong girl," Maan said.

"Stop!" Arjun yelled as he tried to get to his feet.

That only enraged Maan more as he laid another punch across Arjun's face.

People were beginning to gather as security raced from the opposite end towards them.

"Maan stop…" Sameera called as she grabbed on to Maan to try and take him off Arjun.

Maan paid no heed and continued to pummel the man in front of him.

Then, suddenly, amongst the large crowd that had gathered, there was a piercing scream and an audible thud as a body hit the floor.
