"Will you be pacing the entire night?" Shashank heard Padma's voice say to him.
"I'm sorry if I awakened you," he told her.
"I'd have to be asleep for you to awaken me," she replied.
"She should have called by now," Shashank spoke, but then his voice softened a bit. "I thought she would have called by now."
"If you don't hear from her before you make the announcement, you'll hear from her after." She tried to assure him. "Give her some time."
"It's not time that concerns me," he said. "I have security concerns. She's a princess out there in the world –"
"In Seattle," Padma smiled a little, knowing it wasn't going to be easy for her husband to become accustomed to his daughter spending her life with Dr. Armaan Mallik.
"In Seattle," he gritted out, but then stated. "I want her to come home."
"There's only one way she'll consider coming home," she told him.
Shashank exhaled while reluctantly nodding his head in agreement.
"Perhaps, it will all work out for the best," she said, the tone of her voice hopeful. "Why don't you come back to bed and try to get some sleep?"
"I fear I may never sleep again," he replied as he returned to the bed.
Once he lay beneath the covers next to her, Padma softly spoke, "I wish this was happening under better circumstances, but do you realize we haven't had a conversation of this length in some time? In fact, I cannot remember the last time you and I spoke at length."
He turned his head to gaze at his wife, anticipating that there was more she needed to say to him.
"Our relationship was so much better before we married," she told him. "I never had as much input about this marriage as you, but when my father informed me that I was betrothed to you, I was so happy because I have always loved you. I've never concealed that from you, but every time I've tried to talk to you about it, you've turned away as if it were nothing."
"It's not nothing," he replied. "It's not meaningless."
"Our marriage has been everything I've expected this union to be; however, it has failed in every other regard. What's worse is that it has taken the sight of our daughter in complete adoration of a man she's not supposed to love to give me the courage to tell you this. What she wants for herself is what I have always wanted … with you, but I only want it if you want it too. I have always been here for you." Her voice was overflowing with emotion. "Have you distanced yourself from me all this time because the chance to produce a male heir was lost?"
"No," he furrowed his brows.
"Then why have you abandoned me?" She asked, a tear slipping from her eye. "I failed to do the one thing required of me."
"You didn't fail," he told her. "It wasn't your fault … and I distanced myself because I nearly lost you when Shilpa was born. I didn't want to risk losing you again." His voice trailed off at the end. "I didn't want to be responsible for harming you again."
"Harming me?" She replied. "Are you telling me that you've been blaming yourself all this time? Shashank, it wasn't your fault that my uterus ruptured."
"If you hadn't been pregnant-"
"I wanted to be pregnant," she interrupted him. "All children are miracles, but Shilpa is special. A day doesn't pass when I don't think about the very real fact that we could have lost her that day. That day should have been a lesson to both of us, you and me, but we've both been remiss." She wiped her eyes. "You've been spending all this time blaming yourself, while I've been doing the same when we should have been communicating with each other. You cannot imagine what it's like to wonder where your husband is; who he's with; and what he's doing with her."
"You believe I've been unfaithful to you?" He asked.
"I'm not nave," she told him.
"I've never touched another woman since we took vows," he replied. "I don't believe in that."
"But Adi-" She said.
"What does this have to do with Adi?" He asked.
"You had no problem with Adi and all the women," she replied.
"I had no problem with all the women before he got engaged to my daughter." He mildly snapped, "But once he marries her, I expected him to honor his vows. He didn't, so not only does he lose Shilpa, he loses everything he would have gained by being married to her."
"It's better that this happened sooner, rather than later," Padma told him. "Before he destroyed her spirit, and I believe now that he would have."
He silently nodded and then glanced at her, quietly asking, "Have I destroyed yours?"
"No," she replied.
"Do you regret marrying me?" He inquired.
"I don't regret anything with you," she told him, but then added, "except for the time we've wasted. We have defined how Shilpa views marriage. Is it really any wonder why she's in Seattle with Dr. Mallik? She doesn't want to be me. She wants someone to love her, not her title."
"I don't love your title," he quickly replied.
"No," she smiled. "You love your title."
"Am I really that bad?" He asked.
"No," she replied, "but I can say that because I knew you before you were King. Shilpa has only known you as King."
"I am not her King," Shashank stated. "I'm her father."
"Then act like it," she told him, "and if you have a little extra time for me, I would very much like to have my husband back. Now, I think we should get some sleep. You don't want to look like death warmed over when you speak to the media tomorrow, rather, today."
"Yes, Your Majesty," he smirked.
She smiled as she turned onto her side to go to sleep, but as she did so, Shashank slid his arm around her waist and pulled her so that her back was flush against his chest. Her smile never fell from her lips as she slept inside her husband's embrace for the first time in a very long time.
Seattle
Armaan, Shilpa, and Shubhankar were in Armaan's office when there was a quick knock at the door.
"Yeah?" Armaan yelled.
"What is yeah?" Shilpa asked Armaan. "What does that mean?"
Shubhankar hadn't stopped smiling since he'd walked into Mallik's office. Watching the two of them together was way too much fun. Five minutes never passed without the princess admonishing or reprimanding Armaan for something. Of course, Armaan would just smile, knowing whatever he'd said or done annoyed her. If Shubhankar had the opportunity, he would tell her she's only enabling Armaan's bad behavior by questioning him.
Meanwhile, Richard opened the door, quickly entered the office, and then closed the door behind him. "We've got a problem," he informed them.
"What kind of problem?" Armaan asked.
"The main entrance of this hospital is surrounded by the media," Richard stated, "and the local news stations have felt the need to announce it over and over … and over."
"They know I'm here," Shilpa quietly stated.
"They know you're here," Richard replied.
"I'm sorry," Shilpa told him. "I don't usually travel this way. I certainly didn't mean to cause any problems."
"You're fine," Richard said. "I just wanted to let you know in case you were planning to leave the building anytime soon."
"You just had to wear bright orange and yellow dress, didn't you," Armaan spoke to Shilpa. "And the tiara."
"I wasn't thinking about any of that when I left," she frowned at him.
"Where's your car?" Shubhankar asked Armaan, while Richard left the office.
"At the hotel," Armaan replied.
"At the hotel?" Shilpa furrowed her brows. "Why is your car at a hotel?"
"My car is at a hotel because that's where I'm currently living," Armaan told her.
"You live in a hotel?" She asked. "I can't live in a hotel."
"I'm currently looking for a house," he informed her, "and I didn't want to sleep on the street, so I'm sleeping in a hotel."
"Oh," she said.
"Do you want me to go get it for you?" Shubhankar offered.
"Would you mind?" Armaan asked.
Shubhankar held out his hand as Armaan tossed him the keys and said, "Thank you."
"I'll call you when I get back," Shubhankar told him and left.
Armaan followed him so that he could lock his door. He then turned towards Shilpa. "You need to change," he said.
"I don't have anything to change into," she reminded him.
"Actually, you do," he said as he walked over to the small closet, and retrieved a brand new pair of navy blue scrubs.
"No!" She replied the moment she saw them.
"Yes," Armaan insisted. "Everyone's going to be looking for you. You can't walk around looking like that." He gestured towards her.
"What's wrong with how I look?" She asked.
"You look like a freaking princess," he told her.
"Someone needs to wash your mouth out with soap," she told him.
"You're welcome to try, but right now, you are going to change into these scrubs, and the sooner you do that, the sooner we can get you some more appropriate clothing," Armaan stated. He held out the scrubs to her.
She took them from him, looking positively ill, and said, "They're polyester."
Armaan simply shrugged.
"Is the door locked?" She asked.
"Yes," he replied. "Why don't you give me the tiara and the rest of your diamonds?"
"What are you going to do with them?" She wanted to know as she lifted the tiara from her head, careful not to tug on her hair.
"I don't know," he told her, "but we'll figure something out."
She removed the rest of her jewels and gave them to him. "If I don't have a bath soon, I'm going to expire."
"That can be arranged," he said, and then clarified, "the bath part."
"Would you mind?" She asked, turning so that he could help free her from the fabulous piece of Versace couture.
"Mind?" He smirked. "I consider it my personal responsibility."
"May I remind you that we're in your office?" She pointed out.
"So?" He replied, freeing her from the confines of the dress.
"I won't be resorting to lascivious behavior in your office," she informed him.
"You'll resort when I tell you to resort," he smiled and then turned her towards him and kissed her.
"In some instances, that may be true," she acquiesced.
Armaan quietly laughed.
"Are you laughing at me?" She asked.
"I am," he replied. "Put the damn scrubs on so we can get the Hell out of here. I'm hungry, and I need to eat, because I have every intention of draining my body and yours of every ounce of energy tonight."
"Oh my," she sighed and then realized, "I don't have a bra."
"Would you please get dressed?" Armaan requested.
"I can't walk around without a bra," she told him. "It would be inappropriate."
"We could pretend you've had breast augmentation, and I can wrap them up real tight," he offered.
"I would never," she frowned.
"Shubhankar's going to be here soon, and you'll still be wearing that dress," he said. "Take it off and change … please."
Shilpa let go of her dress, allowing it to fall to the ground. She then stepped out of it, wearing nothing but a pair of black lace Armani panties.
Armaan couldn't take his eyes off of her. On second thought.
Shilpa pulled the scrub top over her head. It was too big for her, but she figured that wasn't a bad thing considering her lack of undergarment. She then stepped into the scrub pants and pulled them up. She pulled the drawstring tight and then tied it, before pulling the top down.
"I suppose I'm ready," she said.
Armaan reached down and picked up the recently discarded dress. Moving even closer to her he said, "Have I mentioned how stoked I am that you're here?"
"Stoked?" She replied.
"Elated, excited…"
"I know what it means," she slightly smiled.
"I find you just as irresistible in polyester," he told her.
Shilpa actually felt a blush creep across her face. "They look much better on you," she stated.
Armaan lifted her left hand and asked, "Where's your engagement ring?"
"Lodged in Adi's head or perhaps his eye if I aimed well," she told him, "but I didn't stay around to make certain of that. I don't suppose you still have the other ring."
"What other ring?" Armaan asked.
"The other ring," she said.
"Why do you ask?" He replied.
"I don't know," she said, backing down a bit and momentarily looking away before lifting her eyes to his once again. "I guess I was hoping I might see it again."
"Oh," Armaan quietly spoke. "You're going to see it again." He slid his hand alongside her neck and drew her into a deep, sultry kiss. "You're going to be seeing it for a very long time." Just as he was about to kiss her again, his cell rang.
Shubhankar was back with his car.
Armaan kissed her once more and added, "You're going to be seeing me for a very long time."
He took her hand and led her out of his office.
