Part 3: Not So Bad
"Something's wrong." Atul spoke.
"Definitely." Anjali agreed.
"They're actually not talking or fighting or interacting." Muskaan spoke amazed.
"There's actually silence at lunch, for once." Rahul interjected.
They all stared as Armaan and Shilpa sat side by side not interacting. Not saying anything.
"Umm'everything okay, you guys?" Rahul questioned.
Silence.
"Did you guys have a fight?" Anjali grimaced.
Silence.
"Stop it. Say something." Muskaan pleaded.
Silence.
"Stop acting as if what Shilpa said yesterday at lunch, about your parents trying to hook you up, was actually true." Atul tried.
Twitching of mouths, and then'silence.
Rahul, Anjali, Atul, Muskaan shared a look.
"Don't tell me..." started Muskaan only to be interrupted by Rahul.
"That it was true." Rahul finished for her.
Muskaan glared. Rahul looked down.
"I was going to say that anyways, you didn't have to interrupt me."
"Oh well, too bad."
"Guys, seriously? Can we focus on them for a while?" Anjali asked. Armaan and Shilpa cringed at the way she said 'them'.
"Well, it's always about them, isn't it?" asked Muskaan.
"Why, jealous?" Rahul sneered.
"No." Muskaan spoke.
"Whatever you say." Rahul spoke looking at her.
"Stop." Muskaan spoke.
"What?" asked Rahul innocently.
"Stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you want to grab her face and kiss her." Atul spoke getting angry glares from both parties and then a 'hmph'.
"Thank you." Anjali spoke gratefully.
Atul grinned like an idiot and spoke. "No problem, my love."
The grateful expression turned into a glare. Atul looked sad.
"Armaaaaan" two girls purred out of nowhere.
"Which one of us do you like better?" Girl/Cat number 1 asked.
No reply.
"Armaan, come on, taaaalk to us." Girl/Cat number 2 whined.
"Umm, why?" Armaan asked them suspiciously.
Four people at the table gasped, loudly. "Oh, so you talk to them, but not us. Some friend you are." Muskaan spoke a tiny bit dejected.
Her, and the others at the table were duly ignored.
"Well, because we like you so you should talk to us." Girl/Cat number 1 purred, again.
"Nooo," Armaan drawled out looking uninterested "I meant why are you asking who I like better?"
"'Cause whoever you like better, you're going to go out with her."
"He totally likes me better." Girl/Cat number 2 purred.
"No, he doesn't. He wants to go out with me.
"I don't want to go out with either of you." Armaan spoke, but the girlswho were too busy having a cat fight, ignored him.
Shilpa looked amused when she noticed how helplessly, Armaan was looking between two girls in front of him.
"Got a crush of me, Malhotra?" Armaan snapped glaring at her viciously.
"Girl troubles, Mallik?" Shilpa threw back her tone full of venom. Her suspicions about their parents were true and she didn't like it one bit.
"Shut up." Armaan spoke ready to kill the girl sitting in front of him.
"Guys, seriously, I think we should really focus more on the fact that you guys are going to get married than fighting like that." Muskaan spoke her tone serious.
"I agree" Anjali spoke "I mean we can't have World War III starting so soon, now can we?"
"I guess you're right." Shilpa spoke reluctantly completely ignoring the World War III comment.
"Oh no!" Rahul gasped over dramatically and in a very feminine-sounding voice "I was much too enjoying that."
Atul and Rahul high-fived laughed and Armaan got up abruptly making Atul and Rahul push their chairs back in fear a bit.
"Armaan, sit down." Shilpa spoke.
"You can't control me. Nor can you tell me what to do." Armaan sneered but sat down anyways.
"Oh, yes I will, honey." Shilpa teased.
Before Armaan had a chance to retort, the people he called friends interrupted, and they were forced to explain their separate conversations with their parents last night over dinner.
ooooooo
"You, are coming with me." Armaan stated as he grabbed his bane of his existence by her shoulders and steered her towards his new car. He noticed her flinch her a little but he ignored it and paid attention to the more 'pressing matters at hand'.
"Um, no, I'm really not." She spoke firmly releasing herself from his grasp and headed back to where Anjali and Muskaan were standing staring at them both.
"Uh, yes, you are." Armaan spoke matching her tone, while walked beside her matching her pace.
"No, Armaan, I'm not."
"Yes, Shilpa, you are."
"No."
"Yes."
"No!"
"Yes!"
"Make me!"
"You wish you hadn't said that, Princess. You really wish you hadn't." Armaan spoke, smiled politely, before throwing her over his shoulder and heading towards the parking lot.
"PUT ME DOWN!" Shilpa yelled at the top of her lungs, and if everyone wasn't staring at them before, now they certainly were.
Everybody was silent, as they saw a partly angry Armaan lift an even angrier Shilpa and head towards his car. It was then that the whispering and rumors started:
"Um, what are they doing?"
"Did Armaan just'?"
"Is that them?!"
"Pinch me."
"What just happened?"
"Are they dating?"
"What's going on with them?"
"Come on, it's them. Why are you surprised?"
"True that."
"I knew it! I knew they were in love with each other."
"What do you mean were? They are."
"Armaan," Shilpa whispered constantly jabbing him in the stomach with her toes, and in the chest with her knees but to no avail "Put me down."
"Make me." Armaan mocked.
"Armaan, everybody's staring."
"Well, be prepared. There's gonna be a whole lot of staring going on when we hand out the marriage invites."
"Pshh. You think I'm going to get married to you?"
"Wait, what?" Armaan stopped and put her down.
"What, you wanted to marry me?" Shilpa asked pushing out her hands sideways to regain her balance.
"Uh...no, but the way you acted yesterday it seemed like you did."
1 minute.
2 minutes.
3 minutes.
4 minutes.
5 minutes.
6 min...
"Shilpa, SHUT UP. You've been laughing for 5 minutes, straight."
"I, I, I'm...really...really...s-s-sorry!" Shilpa managed to choke out between laughs. "What you said, it was, it was honestly very funny."
"Yeah, whatever you say. Now come with me."
"What? You think cracking a joke will make me want me to come with you?" spoke Shilpa sobering up rather too quickly "Sadly, you're dumber than I thought you were. I can't believe I was wrong."
Armaan gasped mockingly, "OH MY GOD! Shilpa, Shilpa Malhotra, as in the keener of our school. As in the biggest keener out there was WRONG! WRONG as W.R.O.N.G. WRONG. I can't believe it!"
"Aren't you over-reacting a bit?" Shilpa asked her eyebrows raised.
Armaan made a strange sound as he made a face at her.
"Let's go." He tried again moving a step forward.
"Sure." She replied smiling sweetly.
"Really?" he asked bewildered.
"No." She spoke taking a step towards him as well until they were face-to-face, err, neck-to-face.
"Want me to pick you up again?"
"No, thanks."
"Oh! Thank. God! You were too heavy, anyways."
"Ex-cuse me?"
"Excuse yourself. Now come with me if you want to end this marriage."
Now, THAT caught her attention.
"End this marriage?" she inquired.
"Well, yeah!" he spoke in a matter-of-fact tone. "Unless, of course you want to marry me since I'm so good looking and all."
"Not in your dreams!" She spoke giving him a different smile altogether - she smirked.
"Maybe not in mine, but certainly in yours, and I'm sure it's not just getting married that we do in there." Armaan winked at her.
"Oh, gross" Shilpa yelled at him, her face scrunching up in disgust.
"Oh, whatever, you know you do." Armaan spoke before grabbing her hand and depositing her in the car gently. He leaned forward and spoke, "Try getting out of this car, and I will tell my parents that I agree to this marriage."
"What makes you think just 'cause you say yes the marriage will happen?" asked Shilpa surprised.
"You may like to believe that they go by gender equality in this time period," Armaan spoke seriously getting in the car "But the truth is they really don't. You're the girl, and therefore if I say yes the 'rishta' is pakka. They usually don't bother for the women's consent even in this era. So I'll warn you before you decide to jump out of a moving car. Now fasten your seatbelt."
"No, it's not like that." Shilpa protested.
"And how do you know?" asked Armaan looking at her.
"I just do!" Shilpa answered.
"I don't know just how naive you are, but what I told you just now is true. I've seen way too many people that suffered that fate."
"How do you know?" cried Shilpa helplessly "You might be mistaken for all you knew."
"One of them was a friend of mine," spoke Armaan, a distant look in his eye "A really good friend of mine. And this is why I'm completely against marriage."
"Why are you against marriage?" asked Shilpa surprised "They ask for the guys' consent."
"So? What's the point in getting married to a girl who probably hates you for saying yes?"
"Aah. So you're the love marriage type. I would have never guessed."
"No, I'm the No-marriage type. Love marriages are fake. The bride and the groom just think they love each other."
"That's not true."
"Then why do most marriages end in divorce? If you truly love each other then why do you get divorced?"
"That's, because" Shilpa swallowed looking away "Most often people change."
"That's just an excuse," Armaan spoke not missing the look in Shilpa's eyes "I never knew you were the love marriages type."
"I'm not. I was...just...saying." Shilpa spoke.
"Mhmm. Now fasten your seatbelt." Armaan spoke.
"Make me."
Armaan sighed in frustration, and then proceeded to glare at her only to find that she hadn't moved an inch.
Shilpa cringed and closed her eyes as Armaan leaned forward to buckle her seatbelt and touched her arm in the process. He raised an eyebrow as he noticed how uncomfortable she looked and spoke, "Same as ever. What is your problem? Why do you always cringe or flinch when someone touches you?"
"It's not my fault, okay?" she replied defensively opening her eyes slowly "I don't like it when people touch me."
"That's weird, you know." He commented as he started the car and drove away.
"Excuse me?" she asked offended "Are you trying to say that girls like to be touched all the time?"
"What?" he asked confused. "No. no. no. That's not what I meant" he spoke quickly her words registering in his mind.
'Leave it to her feminist mind to turn every comment of yours around and blame you for being a sexist pig' he thought as he stared at the fuming girl beside him.
"Then?" she spoke and glared at him as the car stopped at the red signal lights.
"I meant it's like weird that you mind being touched. I mean I would totally understand if the person was touching something like, umm, how do I say this?" he spoke flustered. This was probably the most awkward moment between them that he had ever encountered.
Shilpa just raised her eyebrows not fully comprehending what he was getting at.
"Ok, look" he spoke starting over again "It's normal for people to just grab your hand. Okay, maybe not grad your hand, but touch your arm, or tap your shoulder. That's normal and nobody flinches over stuff like that. You on the other hand flinches over every little thing'"
"Armaan," she sighed as she realized how pointless their conversation was "Forget it. I'm not in the mood, okay?"
"That's got to be the first time a girl has ever said that to me" he replied catching her eye and winking.
"What?...Oh, gross! Disgusting, Armaan!" she shrieked.
"Shh!" he spoke grinning "Not so loud!"
"Oh! Shut up!" she spoke disgusted.
"Oh, whatever, babe. Grow up." He spoke rolling his eyes at her childishness.
"Babe?" she inquired smirking.
"Fine," he spoke smirking back "How about: Oh, whatever, wifey-to-be. Grow up."
"Wifey? Do you know how much, umm, like a teenage girl you sounded?"
"Was that supposed to a euphemism, Shilpa?"
"Maybe." She spoke smiling mysteriously "Wait. You know what a euphemism is?"
"Yes, and I even know other hard words like: cat, dog, eat . Need I continue?"
"Oooh Mr. Armaan's pulling out the big words. What did you have a dictionary for lunch?" she asked in a mocking tone tilting her head as she looked at him.
He laughed as he heard her talk to him in that tone. She had used it quite often on him, but this time it sounded different, or maybe it even was.
Shilpa smiled to herself as the sound of his laughter reached her ears, and he parked the car in her parent's parking lot.
She closed the door of the car when she heard him speak, "You're not normal are you?"
"Hmm?" she looked at him genuinely puzzled.
"You're not like your typical, average keener?" he asked getting out of the car.
Shilpa smirked as she walked over to the driver's side of the car. She stood on her toes, looking up, and leaned forward till she was right in front of Armaan's face and spoke tapping his nose gently three times with her index finger, "Now, now, hubby-to-be, no need to give me such beautiful compliments. If you like me that much, all you have to do is say so."
To say that Armaan was speechless at her actions would be an understatement. She giggled as she realized what an effect she had on him, and walked toward the door of her house still laughing.
Armaan stared at her retreating back in awe, the sound of her laughter still ringing in his ears. 'This marriage certainly will be way more interesting than I thought it would be.'that was awesome...cant wait 4 them 2 b married =]
awesome man i want this marriage done sooner as possible
