Chapter 12:
She stirred a bit, her mind going wild with a volley of questions - Was she really that shallow? Didn't she ever care about the other person's emotions? Was Samrat right? An unruly tear escaped her eye as she struggled to control her emotions. Yes, she was hurt; nobody liked to hear such things about oneself, specially not from a friend.
But could she let this go? Forget and move on? Or did she want to change this? Her head hammered with the constant chain of thoughts.
Regrettably, she confessed to herself - Samrat was right! She had been too absorbed in her own little world to pay attention to what her actions were doing to the others; too naive to try and find out if there was something more to what people said and did. For heaven's sake, she even agreed to go out on a so-called 'date' with Ranvijay - Why? She didnt even know!! Despite her sister always cursing him, despite Samrat also asking her to the s---
Her eyes flew open, as the whole truth dawned on her - Regarding why Samrat was so upset tonight... Firstly, he tries to arrange a suitable person for Di, just so she could go to the party and instead of telling him not to take so much of pains, she asked him if he could do that for her!! She sighed. Next, he asks her to come to the party with him, and instead of giving a direct response, she merely plays around with him and lands up at the party with Ranvijay of all people!! She groaned inwardly as more tears threatened to escape her eyes. She was really just as mean and selfish as Samrat had said, and the feeling of knowing that was not good at all.
She felt disgusted with herself. Despite her sister's warnings, she still went off with RV, knowing fully well how much she disapproved of it. She was such a terrible sister. A few more tears ran down her cheeks as she shook siletly, wiping them off, careful not to wake Nupur sleeping beside her.
She had to redeem herself, not just in the eyes of all those who cared about her, but also in her own eyes. Plus, she had to prove Samrat wrong too - she did care about people, didnt she? Currently, she couldnt answer that question but her resolve made it clear that she would be able to, someday. After all, its never too late!

Mayank let himself into his apartment and threw the key on the side table. Walking quietly into his room, he dropped on the bed and let out a long sigh as he closed his eyes. The memory of Nupur's shocked and angry face appeared in his head.
He sat upright. What was he doing? How could he play with somebody's emotions to this extent? Nupur â Nupur was actually about to kiss him? He shook his head. She wasn't in her senses!!
He got up and switched on the lamp on his bedside table. His mother's photo smiled up at him. He picked up the frame and smiled. He grabbed the phone and dialled her number.
"*yawn* Hello??"
"Hello? Maa?"
"Mayuu?" He could hear the rustling of sheets as she probably sat up. "It's so late at night; how come you are calling now?"
He looked at his watch and cursed inwardly. It was past midnight. "Oh, sorry Maa... I didn't realise... I'll call tomorâ"
"Arey it's fine... What happened? You sound upset..." She interrupted him.
"No maa... It's not that..."
"Achcha? Then why did you call?"
"Bas... Just like that! When is your next visit to the doctor's?"
"This Thursday..." She yawned again.
"Maa, you're sleepy, go to sleep... We'll talk tomorrow.." He smiled as he said that.
"OK... Goodnight Mayu...And if there's something..."
"It's nothing, maa..." He smiled "Goodnight... Take care, OK?..."
He lay back. How could he do this - taking Nupur out just because RV paid him??
He smiled as he remembered her non-sensical behaviour after she got drunk. And then sobered up as he remembered all those things she said to him in her intoxicated state.
No! He could not play with her emotions; she was already so vulnerable, so hurt. He couldn't add to her woes. What if she found out the truth? How would she feel?
He ran a hand through his hair as he sat up straight and glanced at his shoes. He would not ask her out now because of the wrong reason!! He would because he wanted to. I do, don't I?
His muddled brain didn't churn out any answer to him as yet. Instead, his heart told him what it was that should be done.

Nupur stirred out of sleep, still groggy and feeling heavy in the head. She felt a weight on her stomach and peeked open an eye to find Gunjan lying next to her, her arm wrapped lightly across her stomach. She smiled slightly; they were this close probably after ages.
She closed her eyes and tried to recollect last night's events - she did remember that Gunjan seemed pretty upset when she had come to her room. She threw open her eyes and sat up as a bad thought struck her - What if RV had tried to so something wid - ??
NO!!!! She would rip his head off if he had tried to do something!!! She made a mental note to ask Gunjan first thing after she woke up and got out of bed, wobbling as she stood up. By God, hangovers are seriously underrated!!!
She walked into the washroom and splashed some water on her face to soothe her burning eyes when more memories flooded her head - the dance!!! "Oh Good Lord, what was I thinking?? How much did I have to drink??" She exclaimed. Her face heated up at the thought of facing those same people at college now... "*sigh* The comments would be never-ending!"
She was wiping her face when the towel slipped from her hands - "MAYANK!!! Did I actually - actually - ??? Oh no, I puked on his shoes!!!" She felt mortified as she covered her mouth with both her hands and leaned on the basin.
She squeaked "And he was still so nice to me - he even came all the way to drop me home. How chivalrous!" She was smiling when the next set of events hit her.
She staggered as she took a few steps backward. "Oh.My.God. Did I try to kiss him?????"
She needed to sit somewhere. So much information was too much to handle for her in such a short span of time! She rushed out and plopped on the bed. Gunjan was not there anymore. Oh, she had far more pressing issues to worry about at the moment. "Please, can I rewind and erase last night???" She looked up as if addressing the almighty.
She stood up and began pacing the room. Why would she try to kiss him of all the people?? "Wait a second! Try to kiss? Why was it just a try?" And then it hit her.
"HE REFUSED MY KISS!!??" She made a big O as a feeling greater than humiliation or regret hit her. She was shocked at first, then it turned to indignance and finally - anger! "He thinks he's above my kiss??? He thinks he's above Nupur Bhushan's scarce show of affection??? How dare he!! Grrrrr...!!! I am SO not gonna talk to him... If he thinks he's too good, then I'm no less, Mr. Snooty two-shoes... Oh wait, make that Mr. Pukey two-shoes!!" She giggled at her little joke a bit but then sobered up. Glancing at the watch, she cussed and rushed to dress up, preparing herself to face the music.
And it indeed was music in its truest sense. The moment she entered the college corridor, whistles sounding uncannily similar to 'Uff teri ada' started being blown from around her. A few cheap, bold boys even went to the extent of playing the song on their cellphones and yelling "Ready to rock, people??". She narrowed her eyes and gave them a cold, death-stare, but that seemed to encourage them more and increased their decibels. She lifted her head haughtily and walked on towards her class, ignoring them, or atleast pretending to ignore.
Mayank had been waiting for Nupur in the class for almost half an hour, when she entered, followed by the bandwagon of cheapsters. He got up from his seat and walked towards her. The boys quietened and settled down in their seats as he gave his signature 'scary sadu look' to them. Nupur noticed that and was pleased internally, but ignored him, still pissed at him.
"Hey Nupur..." He spoke to her once they reached her seat.
She muttered an illegible response under her breath as she banged her bag on the table.
"I didnt quite catch that..." He asked, a bit confused now.
She covered her nose and pointed towards the door, from where 'stinky-haired' Shukla Sir was entering.
"Oh ok, later then!!" He walked back to his seat, still confused at Nupur's behaviour, but he brushed it off, considering it one of her erratic mood swings. He was getting pretty used to them.
"OK class, since Deodhar Sir's away for a week, I'm here to announce the launch of this year's college magazine... Usually he takes all the entries, English as well as Hindi, but this time those interested, can give in your entries to me too..."
"Sir, when is the last date for submission??" one of the students asked.
"The 15th of October!"
"But Sir, the college play is on the 14th!!" Nupur interrupted loudly.
"So what, Ms.Bhushan?? Any issues?"
A few students sniggered. She glared at them and muttered a "No Sir.."
Shukla Sir started to leave and the students visibly relaxed, stretching their arms and turning in their seats to chat, when he turned back.
"And yes, there is one more announcement, which I think is completely irrelevant for all students, who should be busy studying and covering the vast course, attempting to get better grades, rather than engaging themselves in such frivolous and growth-hampering activities..." He spoke in an annoyed tone when he was interrupted by a woman's voice.
"Then let me make the 'completely irrelevant' announcement, Mr.Shukla... I'm far more conditioned to them!!" Tam Maam entered the classroom, smiling at him sarcastically.
Shukla Sir glanced at her once and nodded curtly, hmphing and muttering under his breath about the abominable culture that has affected the youth of today, as he left.
Tam Maam watched him leave in amusement and then cleared her throat to address the class "OK people!! So the thing is that you guys have a play every year, right??"
The students mumbled affirmatives, wondering where this was going.
"This time, its going to be followed by a ball - Excel's very first dance, held in the college itself!!"
The students' cheering that followed next was deafening. Only two faces looked disgusted - Mayank and Nupur.
Nupur leaned towards Diya and spoke with disgust, "Who in this World would go to such a pathetic event, where all guys want to do is rub up against the girls and all girls want to do is become a walking-talking make-up kit???"
Diya's lips curled up into a smile at her best friend's sardonic description of what was probably going to be this yr's most awaited event at Excel. "Well, I would, but I don't have a date!!" She told her.
Nupur rolled her eyes "Yeah right!! I wouldnt, even if I did manage to let the guy live after he asked me out!!!"
They giggled and got talking about the last night's party, which Diya had missed coz her parents wouldnt let her go out so soon after her recovery from the flu.
"And now I am not going to talk to that guy!!! What does he think of himself???" She irritably vented as she finished filling her in with last night's events, unaware that Mayank was standing behind her and had finally understood the reason behind her weird behaviour. He walked out, annoyed at her stupid conclusion. If he had stayed, he would have definitely blessed Diya for voicing his thoughts.
"But look at it this way, Nupur - He was such a gentleman, to not take advantage of the moment..!!" Diya explained to her.
Nupur made a face but couldnt help but see the truth in those words.
Diya continued, "Would you have liked to know that you kissed a guy when you were not in your senses??"
"Obviously not!! But this is even more humiliating...and demeaning also!!"
"Is it?? Really?" Diya shrugged her shoulders when Nupur stubbornly nodded her head. She was fighting a lost case, anyway!
